What's real: calipers fail individually from local corrosion — unlike pads and rotors, they have no reason to fail together. The price vs the bill: a second $250-$600 caliper that was working fine. The defense question: "What specifically is wrong with the other caliper?" A finding is fair; symmetry is not. Overcharging signs covers the pattern and disputing a bill is the backup.

Trap three: the caliper replaced without touching the slide pins. The situation: new caliper on the same old bracket, with the original seized pins. What's real: the pins were the cause, or they'll become one — the new caliper can't slide any better than the old one could. The price vs the bill: a repeat failure inside a year on a brand-new part. The defense question: "Are the slide pins new or cleaned and re-greased?" It should be part of the job, not an extra.

Three real quotes, decoded

Scenario 1: 2014 Civic, front-left dragging, quoted $520 for a caliper. The second shop cracked the bleeder with the wheel jammed. Pressure hissed out and the wheel spun free. The hose had collapsed internally. Hose, pads and fluid: $310. Lesson: thirty seconds with a wrench decided a $200 difference, and the first shop never tried it.

Scenario 2: 2016 Escape, inner pad gone, outer pad half-worn. No pull, no hot wheel, just the asymmetry within one wheel. Slide pin and hardware kit plus pads: $240. The caliper was never the problem. Lesson: uneven wear inside a single wheel points at pins, not pistons.

Scenario 3: 2012 Silverado, burning smell ignored for two months. By the time it came in: caliper seized, rotor blue, pad down to the backing plate, and the wheel bearing had heat damage. Caliper, rotor, pads and bearing: $1,180. Lesson: the caliper was $300 of that bill. The other $880 was the delay.

Your situation right now: four playbooks

"One wheel is hot and the car pulls." You've found the corner. Now insist on the bleeder test before anyone orders a caliper — it's the difference between $130 and $600.

"One pad is gone and the other looks fine." That's the slide pin signature. An $80-$150 hardware kit fixes a large share of these, and it's worth asking about by name.

"They quoted both calipers." Ask what's specifically wrong with the second one. Calipers don't fail in pairs, and a shop with no finding for the second is selling symmetry.

"There's smoke or a strong burning smell." Stop. That's not a repair conversation anymore — heat that extreme can boil brake fluid, and boiled fluid doesn't stop a car. Tow it.

After the fix: verify and protect it

Re-check the wheel temperatures. After the repair, take the same drive and feel each wheel. All four should be similar. A corner that's still hotter means something is still dragging — better found inside the warranty than in a month. Confirm the pedal is firm. Any caliper or hose job opens the hydraulic system, so a soft or sinking pedal afterward means air is still in there and it needs re-bleeding. That's not something to live with. Ask what happened to the slide pins. They should have been cleaned and re-greased at minimum, replaced if seized. Pins that were left alone will cause this again on a new caliper. Flush the brake fluid on schedule. This is the actual prevention: fluid absorbs moisture, and moisture is what corrodes pistons and bores. Every 2-3 years, per your manual, and it's the cheapest caliper insurance available. Watch the pad wear at the next rotation. Even wear across all four corners is the sign everything is releasing properly. Asymmetry returning is the earliest possible warning, long before anything gets hot enough to smell.

  1. Take a normal 10-minute drive, then carefully feel each wheel hub. One dramatically hotter names the corner.
  2. Shine a light through the wheel at both pads on that side. One worn, one thick = slide pins. Both thin = hydraulics.
  3. Coast without braking on an empty road. A pull with no brake applied means that corner is dragging constantly.

Today: 4. Note whether there's a burning smell or visible smoke. Smoke means stop driving and arrange a tow, not a booking. 5. Check the age and condition of your brake hoses, and whether your brake fluid has ever been flushed. Both point at the hose being the real culprit. 6. If you can safely lift the wheel, spin it by hand and compare against the other side on the same axle.

This week: 7. Book the diagnosis with one sentence: "please crack the bleeder with the wheel dragging before ordering a caliper." That's the $400 question. 8. Ask whether slide pins were checked, and insist they're cleaned and greased regardless of what else gets replaced. 9. If the quote covers both calipers, ask what's specifically wrong with the second one — and decline it if the answer is that they go together.
