What actually determines your price
Standalone valve or integrated housing. The old-fashioned thermostat is a $20-$50 valve in a housing you unbolt. Many modern engines use an integrated thermostat-and-housing assembly — plastic, sometimes with the sensor built in — at $100-$200, replaced whole.
Access. An exposed housing at the end of the upper hose is 30 minutes. Buried under an intake, behind accessories, or needing the front of the engine apart can be two hours or more.
The bleed. Every job ends with refilling and bleeding, and some cars need a specific procedure or a vacuum fill. That's labor time, and skipping it causes the exact overheating you were fixing.

The rarer failure and the dangerous one. The valve stays shut, coolant can't reach the radiator, the heat has nowhere to go. The gauge doesn't creep — it climbs.

Route 3: The impostors — $20 to $250
P0128 is unusually specific for an OBD2 code, but "the engine isn't reaching temperature" has more than one cause — and two are cheaper than a thermostat.
