It reads all 106 P0430 complaints in full (not a sample), classifies each by the outcome the owner describes, counts how often the owner reports being told their VIN or model year sat outside a campaign that described their exact symptoms, and measures the P0430 mileage distribution against the P0420 one under an identical rule. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. THE COMPLAINT SET, AND THE FALSE-POSITIVE CHECK ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Query: the narrative field (DESCR) matched against the whole-word regular expression \bP0430\b, CASE-INSENSITIVE. Case matters: NHTSA narratives are stored in ALL CAPS through roughly 2020 and in mixed case afterwards, so a case-sensitive query silently loses most of the recent file. It is a run-together string in which the code is not the code being reported: a 2012 Ford narrative reading "TER READING SAYS IT IS A P04300 - BAD INNER COOLER." Excluding it keeps the set identical to the one behind the Check Engine Code Index, which uses the same whole-word rule. FINAL SET: 106 complaints. This is the denominator for every percentage in this file unless another denominator is named. It is also the figure the Check Engine Code Index publishes for this code, independently computed. FALSE-POSITIVE READING. The brief for this work requires reading at least 30 random matches before publishing a count. We read all 106 instead of a sample. Result: 0 of 106 are a mis-parse — in every one of them, P0430 is a real code the owner or a shop actually read off the car. But 11 of 106 (10.4%) are what we label "off target": the code is genuine and incidental, appearing inside a complaint whose real subject is a transmission, a fuel filler that spits back, a runaway idle, a seat belt, or a frame campaign. Those 11 are kept in the denominator and shown as their own category rather than quietly dropped, because dropping them would inflate every other share. Self-reported, no denominator, not a failure rate. People file federal complaints about expensive, unresolved or frightening problems. A P0430 that a dealer fixed free under an extension on a Tuesday will almost never produce one. Nothing in this file measures how often any repair works, and no ranking of manufacturer reliability can be drawn from raw counts across makes that sell wildly different volumes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Two independent flags were recorded per complaint, both read rather than pattern-matched: owner_says_excluded_from_campaign ... 20 of 106 (18.9%) The owner states that their VIN, model year or trim was outside a named campaign, warranty extension or bulletin that describes their exact symptoms and repair. Counted only when a specific program is named or clearly identified by the owner. owner_reports_coverage_refused ...... 32 of 106 (30.2%) The owner reports being refused payment, goodwill or campaign coverage. Both are ONE SIDE of a conversation, written down by the person who lost it, with no reply on the record. We have not verified any individual refusal and cannot tell a correct application of a coverage rule from a wrong one. What the flags measure is the SHAPE of the argument, not who was right. also_names_p0420 ... 24 of 106 (22.6%), by the same whole-word, case-insensitive rule applied to P0420 inside the P0430 narratives. This is the same 24 the P0420 guide reports from the other direction, which is a useful consistency check: both sets were built independently and agree. STRUCTURED OUTCOME FIELDS. Of the 106, the crash flag is Y in 0, the fire flag in 0, and the towed flag in 0. Baselines across all 777,040 complaints in the same window: crash 4.37%, fire 1.82%, towed 5.11%. Zero is a real zero here, not a missing field, but 106 is a small set: with a 5.11% baseline the expected number of tows in 106 draws is about 5, so observing 0 is informative but not extraordinary. Read it as "this code does not strand people," not as proof of safety. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. MILEAGE, AND THE COMPARISON WITH P0420 (p0430-vs-p0420-warranty-clock.csv) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rule, applied identically to both codes: keep MILES where 100 <= miles < 400,000. The floor of 100 drops three placeholder entries (values of 10, 20 and 3,500 that are contradicted by the narrative around them) and reproduces exactly the convention the Check Engine Code Index used, so the two pages agree. P0430 31 reports state a mileage median 78,000 Q1 51,000 Q3 97,000 17 of 31 (54.8%) at or under 80,000 miles P0420 98 reports state a mileage median 108,828 Q1 80,619 Q3 134,225 24 of 98 (24.5%) at or under 80,000 miles The 80,000-mile line is the federal emissions warranty on the catalytic converter, 42 U.S.C. 7541(i)(2): 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first, for light-duty vehicles from model year 1995. LIMITS ON THIS COMPARISON, which matter more than the numbers: a) 31 and 98 are both small, and only 29% of P0430 complaints state a mileage at all. The people who state one may not be typical of those who do not. b) These are different vehicle populations, not the same cars measured twice. The P0430 set is dominated by 2016-2019 Honda V6s whose bulletin family is about fuel injectors; the P0420 set is dominated by a 2012-2016 Kia Soul converter recall. The gap may be a fact about those two populations rather than about banks. c) Mileage is what the owner typed. It is not audited. d) The federal warranty is 8 years OR 80,000 miles, whichever comes first, so being under 80,000 miles does not by itself put a car inside it. The honest claim the data supports is narrow and is the one made on the page: in this file, the bank 2 code arrives at a lower odometer reading than the bank 1 code, and more than half of the P0430 owners who stated a mileage were still under the federal mileage limit when it did. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. WHO THE 106 ARE (p0430-by-make-and-model.csv, p0430-model-year-and-report-year.csv) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ By make: Honda 49, Ford 19, Jeep 6, Dodge 5, Nissan 4, Chevrolet 4, Lincoln 4, Acura 4, Infiniti 2, GMC 2, and one each for Toyota, Cadillac, Chrysler, Buick, Lexus, Volkswagen and Hyundai. By model, the top rows: Honda Pilot 42 (39.6% of the whole file), Ford F-150 12, Honda Odyssey 6, Ford Explorer 4, Dodge Durango 3, Acura MDX 3, Lincoln MKX 3. Concentration worth stating plainly: 48 of the 49 Honda complaints are 2016-2020 Pilot, Odyssey or Ridgeline — the model range of Honda's own P0430 bulletin family, plus two 2020 Pilots one year outside it. By model year, 2016-2019 account for 71 of 106. By the calendar year the report reached NHTSA, 2025 contributed 27 and 2026 (to 8 September only) contributed 25: 52 of 106, just under half the file, arrived in the last twenty-one months of the window. That is a statement about attention and about the growth of the complaint file, NOT a failure trend. A warranty extension or a class action teaches thousands of owners a five-character string they then type into a federal form. These are raw counts from makes with wildly different sales volumes, and no normalization is possible from this data. They are not a reliability ranking. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. WHAT WE LOOKED FOR AND DID NOT FIND ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * NO SAFETY RECALL in NHTSA's Part 573 file has P0430 anywhere in its defect, consequence, remedy or notes text, and no open investigation resume names it. Every document above is a manufacturer communication or an emission recall. That is a reader-facing fact, not a footnote: a VIN check that only covers safety recalls can return "no open recalls" on a car that has a 319,160-vehicle emission recall and an 11-year converter extension against its exact code. * We did not compute our own bulletin count for P0430. The Check Engine Code Index publishes 82; the oxygen sensor guide publishes 342 for P0420 and P0430 together, with per-bulletin flags. Publishing a third number computed a third way would create a discrepancy, not evidence. * We could not establish, from any document we could open, a general rule for which physical side of a V engine carries bank 2. Manufacturers state it per engine family and they disagree: Honda's own letters call bank 2 the FRONT bank on their V6, while Ford's 22M06 labor table prices a "Rear (RH)" and a "Front (LH)" converter without saying which bank each is. The page says so instead of inventing a rule. * We could not re-price this repair in this pass. The consumer estimator sites that publish these ranges refuse automated access, and we do not work around that.
