PULSCAR ANALYSIS — P0700 (TRANSMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION) IN NHTSA'S PUBLIC FILES PulsCar analysis of NHTSA public data, September 2026. License: CC BY 4.0. Attribution: "PulsCar analysis of NHTSA public data, September 2026." Published alongside https://www.pulscar.io/blog/p0700-code ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Prepared 27 September 2026. Source data: NHTSA public flat files (complaints received 2015 to 21 September 2026, 780,071 records; manufacturer communications from January 2015; recalls from 2010) and documents downloaded from static.nhtsa.gov. 1. Complaints naming P0700 (211, all read in full, two coders) Every complaint whose narrative contains the string "P0700". 211 complaints. A random sample of 50 (seed 20260926) was read and coded first; the remaining 161 were read and coded afterwards with the same written codebook (codebook.txt: one primary category from V, T, S, N, E, U) plus a flag for a stall, limp mode, a transmission stuck in one gear or a marked loss of power. A second reader coded all 211 independently without seeing the first coding. Agreement on the category: 194 of 211 (91.9%), Cohen's kappa 0.90; on the flag: 201 of 211 (95.3%), kappa 0.88. Disagreements were resolved by the codebook rules; p0700-211-complaints-read.csv publishes the final codes and both coders' original codes (coder1_*, coder2_*) for every complaint, and the resolution column marks each disagreement. Final categories: valve body, solenoid or hydraulic control (V) 79; internal failure, rebuild or replacement (T) 47; other or undiagnosed (U) 27; network or power (N) 22; sensor, switch or wiring (S) 21; P0700 riding along with an engine event (E) 15. Stall, limp mode, stuck gear or marked loss of power: 151. Other codes named (other_codes_named column, P0700 excluded): P0747 24, U0100 15, P0776 14, P2714 12, P0796 11, P0711 11, P0717 8, U0073 7, P2764 7, P2732 6, P0722 6; 34 complaints name no other code. By maker: Chevrolet 97, GMC 43, Chrysler 15, Subaru 13, Buick 8, Dodge 8, Jeep 7, Cadillac 4, Honda 4, Saturn 4, two each Audi and Pontiac, one each Acura, Ford, Kia, Nissan. 2019-and-newer Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade: 57, of which 52 received in 2025-2026. By year received: 2015 8, 2016 10, 2017 11, 2018 11, 2019 18, 2020 15, 2021 10, 2022 13, 2023 12, 2024 12, 2025 42, 2026 (to 21 September) 49. Some owners filed more than once (a 2021 Tahoe in three complaints, a 2008 Acadia in two, at least two 2022 Silverado complaints naming the same dealer); figures count complaints, not vehicles. 2. Owner-reported amounts (36) Dollar figures for repairs, quotes and diagnoses in p0700-owner-reported-amounts.csv; vehicle purchase prices and goodwill offers are left out; two rows are not transmission repairs and are labelled as such (earlier engine work on a 2015 Yukon; a $5,900 total that includes a converter and fuel pump). 3. Manufacturer documents (94, all read in full) 33 communications — 20 whose NHTSA index summary names P0700 and 13 added from the same makers' related transmission programs (GM 14404 series, N192291660, 22-NA-258, 24-NA-009 and Subaru's CVT warranty extensions); 13 recall documents for recalls 24V-797, 26V-083, 26V-085, 24V-839, 25V-148 and Ford 25V-164, which complaints cite or the special coverages follow; and 48 GM communications found by the companion codes P0747 and P0796, including special coverages N242454441, N242480631 and N252536751. All 94 were downloaded and read in full, with page images where tables or text layers were unreadable. Two are byte-identical copies (duplicate_of column). 20 name P0700 in their own text; none of the 48 companion-code documents does. p0700-documents.csv lists every document with its read status and whether it names P0700 and P0747. Coverage status in September 2026 is our computation from the terms printed in each document, not a statement by the manufacturer. Limits: complaints over-represent frightening failures; owners report the dealer's diagnosis as they understood it; two coders reduce reading error but do not verify repairs. Nothing here is a failure rate.
