# Sorting rules - first batch

Written before any complaint in the set was sorted.

## Pool (how the complaints were found)
NHTSA complaints received 2015-01-01 to 2026-10-04 (782,908 narratives). A complaint is in the pool if its narrative matches any of the following case-insensitive text searches:

1. R1 - a shift-solenoid-A/B or torque-converter-clutch-circuit code by any spelling (letter O for zero, a space, hyphen or period after the P, suffix 00): P0740 P0743 P0744 P0750 P0751 P0752 P0753 P0754 P0755 P0756 P0757 P0758 P0759, or a bare number after a code word:

P0741 and P0742 (torque converter clutch performance / stuck on) have their own article (p0741-code). A complaint is in this pool for P0741/P0742 only if it also matches R1-R4.

Background for the reader (not a sorting rule): P0750 / P0755 are the circuit codes of shift solenoid A / shift solenoid B (P0751-P0754 and P0756-P0759 are their performance, stuck and electrical siblings); P0740 / P0743 / P0744 are the torque converter clutch circuit, its electrical fault and its intermittent fault. The solenoids are electric valves in the valve body that the transmission computer switches to move fluid and shift gears or lock the converter. The code means the computer saw a wrong electrical signal on that circuit. It does not say whether the solenoid, its wire or connector, the fluid, the valve body or the computer is at fault.

For each complaint record exactly one CATEGORY and four yes/no FLAGS. You see an excerpt around the matching words (and the whole narrative when nothing matched). Sort what the excerpt supports; if it is cut off at a point that matters, sort what is stated.

## RELEVANCE
N - Not an automatic-transmission shift-solenoid / torque-converter-clutch-solenoid / transmission-solenoid-circuit event on THIS vehicle. Use N when:
    - the solenoid is not in an automatic (or dual-clutch/CVT) transmission: starter solenoid, fuel, EVAP, purge, VVT/oil-control, door lock, brake, airbag, transfer-case/4WD shift motor, shifter (gear-selector) interlock solenoid (brake-shift interlock) with no transmission fault;
    - the match is false or the words come from another vehicle, a news story or advice;
    - the words only appear in a list of unrelated complaints with no statement that this vehicle had a shift solenoid, TCC solenoid, transmission solenoid, valve body or listed code problem.
    NOT N (relevant) when, on this vehicle: a code from the R1 list is named; OR a shift, TCC/lock-up or transmission solenoid (or solenoid pack) is described as failed, blamed, replaced, or tied to a code, harsh shift, no shift, limp mode or stall; OR a valve body, transmission wiring/connector or transmission computer is blamed for a solenoid/shift fault.

## CATEGORY (one letter) - what was found or done, on this vehicle

S - Solenoid. A shift solenoid, TCC/lock-up solenoid or solenoid pack (including a solenoid replaced as a kit/sleeve) was named as the cause or was replaced.
V - Valve body. The valve body (or valve body with its separator plate/sleeves) was named as the cause or was replaced or rebuilt.
W - Wiring or connector. The transmission wiring harness, internal harness, connector, pins, or a connector flooded with fluid was named as the cause or was repaired or replaced.
F - Fluid. Low fluid, a leak that emptied the transmission, dirty/burnt/wrong fluid, an overdue fluid and filter change, or a fluid flush/filter service was the stated cause or the repair stated.
M - Software or computer. A reflash/reprogramming, relearn/adaptation, the transmission computer (TCM/PCM/TCU/mechatronic control unit) replaced or programmed, or a recall/TSB/special-coverage software procedure was the only repair stated (no part named as cause other than the computer).
Q - Torque converter. The torque converter was named as the cause or was replaced.
T - Transmission. The transmission was replaced, rebuilt, or declared failed, or internal damage was found (burnt clutches, metal debris, broken parts), and no single part of S, V, W, F, M, Q was named as the root cause.
O - Another cause. A repair outside the transmission solenoid system was named as the cause (engine, sensor, speed sensor, battery, misdiagnosis), or the symptom was traced to something else.
C - Checked and cleared. The shop or dealer inspected or tested and found no fault, or only cleared the code, with no repair; or the light went out by itself and nothing was done.
U - No diagnosis or repair stated. The event is reported but nothing was found or done yet, or the complaint does not say.

Precedence when more than one fits: use the FINAL repair the complaint reports as having fixed it (or, if it never got fixed, the cause the shop named last). A part replaced that the owner says did not help does not count. If several parts were replaced together and no single one is named, use the most specific named part in the order S, V, W, F, Q, M. If a part from S/V/W/F/Q is named as the root cause of transmission damage, use that letter (the damage goes in the limp/stall flags), not T. Among M, T, O, C, U: M before T before O before C before U. A cause the owner merely guesses at does not count (an owner's "probably the solenoid" is U unless a shop or the dealer said it, or the part was replaced). An owner's own diagnosis from a code reader or a forum, with no shop mentioned and no part replaced, is U.

## FLAGS (yes/no)
stall - the vehicle stalled, shut off, or lost drive while moving (not merely a hesitation).
limp - the complaint describes limp mode, "reduced power", stuck in one gear (for example third), no shifting, no reverse, or harsh/banging/flaring shifts as the symptom.
recall - the complaint names a recall, technical service bulletin, special coverage, warranty extension, class action, or says the maker told them it is/is not covered by one.
returned - the problem came back after a stated repair, or the same repair was done more than once.

# Addendum to the sorting rules - second search batch (complaints found by the completeness check)

Written before any complaint of the second batch was sorted. The categories, flags, output format and the relevance rule of the first batch (above) apply unchanged. The rules R1-R17 used to settle the first batch (listed after the codebook) apply from the start. Clarifications:

C1. The second batch comes from a check that searched all 782,908 complaints again for other spellings and wording: solenoid misspellings and abbreviations, a solenoid mentioned more than three words away from "transmission", codes with a two-character suffix (for example P07407E), bare code numbers after "code", and the valve body named together with a shift, gear, limp-mode or P-code symptom but with no solenoid wording and no listed code.
C2. A valve body (or "valve body assembly" / "control valve") blamed, diagnosed or replaced for a shift, gear, limp-mode or code symptom IS relevant (category V when it is the named cause or the part replaced). A valve body mentioned only as an expensive possibility, or in a narrative about another fault, is N.
C3. A transmission wiring harness, lead frame or connector complaint with no solenoid wording and no listed code was NOT part of this search (it is a separate group, not read); but when a narrative in this batch names such a part as the cause of a shift or solenoid fault, category W.
C4. Codes outside the list (for example P0747, P0776, P0796, P2716, P2763, P0973) are not listed codes: they do not make a complaint relevant by themselves, but a solenoid or valve body named in the same narrative does (R17 applies to the code names).
C5. Narratives that name only P0741 or P0742 with no solenoid, valve body or listed code are N (R16).

# Rules used to settle disagreements between the two sortings
Every complaint was sorted twice, independently, by the same written rules. Where the two sortings differed in the category or in any of the four yes/no flags, the difference was settled by the rules below and the rule is named in the rule_applied column of the complaints file. The rules R1 to R15 were written down while the first batch was settled; R16 and R17 were added while the first batch was settled and applied in the second batch from the start. R16c is R16 applied in a final check on rows where both sortings agreed (3 rows changed to N). "N" in a rule column means the complaint was found not to describe an automatic-transmission solenoid, valve body or listed-code event on the car.

Rules (published in codebook.txt):
R1 limp=yes covers any abnormal drive or shifting symptom the owner states: limp mode, reduced power, stuck gear, no reverse, flaring, harsh or late shifts, an unexpected downshift, slipping, or loss of drive (the vehicle will not move or loses speed). A symptom that appears only in a quoted bulletin title, not as the owner's own experience, does not count.
R2 an owner-replaced part called a transmission solenoid that did not help keeps the complaint relevant, with category U (a part that did not help does not count).
R3 a repair outside the transmission (ignition switch, battery, TIPM, wiring power feed) named and done for the transmission symptom or code is category O.
R4 a whole transmission replaced or rebuilt is category T even when the problem came back or never went away (a single part that did not help does not count; a whole transmission does). returned=yes only when the repair worked for a time, or the same repair was done more than once.
R5 a shop or dealer saying the transmission must be replaced or is failed (a cause named) is category T.
R6 returned=yes needs a stated repair followed by the same symptom after a time, or the same repair done twice; "still not fixed after the repair" without any relief is no.
R7 a cause the owner infers from a code reader, the internet or a guess, with no shop or dealer statement and no part replaced, is U; "I was told" counts as a shop statement.
R8 limp (R1) needs the owner's own symptom; stall=yes needs the vehicle to have stalled, shut off, or lost drive while moving; a vehicle that will not move from a stop with the engine revving is not a stall.
R9 when fluid contamination is the stated mechanism but a component (valve body) is named as having failed, the component letter wins unless the fluid service is the repair.
R10 recall=yes needs a recall, bulletin, campaign, special coverage, extension or class action that concerns THIS vehicle's transmission/shift/converter fault (performed, offered, excluded, cited by number, or the maker/dealer answering about coverage). "The maker refuses to recall", a warranty extension on other model years, the owner asking for a recall, or a recall for a different part is no.
R11 when a later repair is not tied to the transmission symptom, the transmission-related part decides the category.
R12 a bare mention of a shift solenoid in a list of the owner's other issues in a complaint about a different component, with no description of the fault, is N.
R13 solenoids failed and the valve body is the unit replaced or needed: category V (the unit named for replacement).
R14 a code named by the owner whose cause a mechanic reads as another system (a range sensor, for example) is category O.
R15 a shop saying the problem is normal or within specification after a part was changed is category C.
R16 a complaint whose only relevant code or wording is P0741 or P0742 (torque converter clutch performance / stuck off or on), with no solenoid, valve body or listed code, belongs to the P0741 study and is N here.
R17 a code name that contains the word solenoid, retrieved or noted by a shop, dealer, maker or scan tool, without the shop saying that the part is faulty or must be replaced, does not name a cause: category U.
