PULSCAR ANALYSIS - P0755 AND P0740 (SHIFT SOLENOID B AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH CIRCUIT CODES, WITH P0750 AND P0743), TRANSMISSION SOLENOIDS AND VALVE BODIES IN NHTSA'S PUBLIC FILES PulsCar analysis of NHTSA public data, October 2026. License: CC BY 4.0 Attribution: "PulsCar analysis of NHTSA public data, October 2026." Published alongside https://www.pulscar.io/blog/p0755-code ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Prepared October 2026. Source data: NHTSA public flat files downloaded on 7 October 2026 (complaints received 1 January 2015 to 4 October 2026 - the latest received date in the files - 782,908 records; manufacturer communications; recalls since 2010) and documents downloaded one at a time from static.nhtsa.gov. 1. Complaints (1,647, each sorted twice, independently) First search (656 complaints): every complaint whose narrative names a code of the shift solenoid A/B or converter clutch circuit family by any spelling we searched (P0740 P0743 P0744 P0750 to P0759; a letter O for zero, a space, hyphen or period after the P, the suffix 00, or a bare number after "code", "DTC", "error", "CEL" or "fault"), or says "shift solenoid" or "solenoid A/B" or "solenoid pack", or names the converter clutch, torque converter or lock-up solenoid or circuit, or names a transmission, shift or valve body solenoid within a few words of the word transmission or valve body. The exact searches are in the sorting rules file. P0741 and P0742 complaints are not in this study unless they also match one of the searches (they belong to the P0741 guide). Completeness check (991 complaints): before the second batch was sorted, an independent search of the whole complaint file for what the first had missed proposed 991 more (735 name the valve body together with a shift, gear, limp-mode or code symptom but no solenoid and no listed code; 191 use solenoid wording the first search did not catch, such as misspellings or a solenoid more than three words from the word transmission; the rest use other solenoid wording or code spellings with a two-character suffix). All were added; their relevance was decided by the unchanged rule. A further 668 complaints about a transmission wiring harness or lead frame that name no solenoid and no listed code, and 202 about a mechatronic unit, were found by the same check and set aside; they were not sorted. Sorting: the sorting rules (the file codebook.txt in this folder) were written, dated and fingerprinted before any complaint was sorted. Two independent sortings covered all 1,647 complaints, each from the written rules only, without seeing the other. One category per complaint (N not a transmission solenoid, valve body or listed-code event on this car; S solenoid or solenoid pack; V valve body; W wiring, harness, lead frame or connector; F fluid; M software or transmission computer; Q torque converter; T transmission replaced, rebuilt, declared failed or quoted; O another cause; C checked and cleared; U no diagnosis or repair stated) and four yes/no flags (stall: the vehicle stalled, shut off or lost drive; limp: any abnormal drive or shifting symptom; recall: a recall, bulletin, special coverage, extension or class action about this fault is mentioned; returned: the problem came back after a repair or the same repair was done twice). The two sortings matched on: category 1,510 of 1,647 (91.7%); stall 1,583 (96.1%); limp 1,578 (95.8%); recall 1,603 (97.3%); returned 1,591 (96.6%). Relevance (N or not N): 1,621 of 1,647 matched. 314 complaints differed in the category or at least one flag (159 in the first batch, 155 in the second); every one was read in full and settled under the written rules R1 to R17, published in the sorting rules file. A final check changed the category of 3 complaints on which both sortings agreed (P0741 named with no solenoid, valve body or listed code: N). The second batch applied the rules R1 to R17 from the start, so its disagreements were fewer. Final: not relevant (N) 108; of the 1,539 relevant: V 534, U 414, T 257, S 225, W 27, C 22, M 21, Q 14, O 13, F 12. Flags among the relevant: stall 267, limp 1,291, recall 358, returned 281. 103 of the relevant name a code of the family themselves: P0744 32, P0740 24, P0751 11, P0752 10, P0755 9, P0750 7, P0756 7, P0757 5, P0753 4, P0758 4 (a complaint can name more than one; none names P0743). Makes among the 1,539: Chevrolet 317, Ford 289, Gmc 160, Nissan 146, Jeep 86, Toyota 67, Dodge 52, Honda 49, Subaru 49, Chrysler 44. Models: Chevrolet Silverado 1500 124, Ford F-150 114, Gmc Sierra 1500 65, Nissan Rogue 43, Jeep Cherokee 37, Ford Escape 34, Nissan Altima 34. Median model year 2016. 690 complaints give a mileage from 1,000 to 400,000; median 89,497.5. By year received: 2015 97, 2016 79, 2017 80, 2018 105, 2019 127, 2020 84, 2021 70, 2022 78, 2023 85, 2024 124, 2025 329, 2026 281. NHTSA fields among the relevant: crash 14, fire 1, injury 6 complaints (8 people), deaths 0, towed 60. Mention counts (a search of the narratives for words, not sorted; case-insensitive, in the relevant narratives): valve body 835; lead frame 31; solenoid pack, block or body 35; backorder 101; "class action", lawsuit or settlement 28; refusal, denial or "not covered" wording 113; "no recall" wording 49; 10-speed wording 71; CVT 83. Recall numbers named in the relevant narratives: 24V797 16, 16V529 3, 20V043 3, 19V075 3, 14V224 2, 16V461 2, 17V821 2, 25V148 2. 2. Owner-reported amounts (298 figures in 226 complaints) Every dollar figure (and "dollars" or "bucks" amounts, and a few "NNk" amounts) in the relevant complaints was pulled out by a text search (597 candidates in 357 complaints) and decided one by one under one written rule, written before any figure was decided (amounts rule: keep every figure the narrative ties to the diagnosis or repair of this fault - a solenoid or pack, a valve body, wiring or lead frame, fluid service, the transmission computer, the converter, a rebuilt or replacement transmission, or a diagnostic fee - on this vehicle). 298 figures were kept; status from the owner's own words: quoted 178, billed 51, paid 43, not stated 16, offered 10. 299 candidates were excluded: mileage 185, other_system 36, vehicle_value 29, restated 22, not_a_price 12, not_this_vehicle 12, unclear 3. 3. Manufacturer documents (448 files) First search: every manufacturer communication in NHTSA's index (the same index used for the other studies) whose summary names a code of the family (including the six-character form such as P07407E), a shift solenoid, a converter clutch solenoid or circuit, or a transmission solenoid together with transmission, valve body, shift, TCM or mechatronic wording: 295 NHTSA ids. Completeness check: an independent search of the same index proposed 155 further ids (including 9 Toyota bulletins that print the code with a two-character suffix); 153 were downloaded (2 had no PDF on NHTSA's site) and read the same way; the document list marks them as found by the second search. Recalls: the filings of ten recall campaigns on parts in this guide (Lexus 26V094, Ford 25V164, 24V444, 19V075 and 16V248, Ram 24V413, GM 24V797 and 25V148, Chrysler 16V461, FCA 16V529): 28 recall files (owner letters, dealer notices, chronologies, defect reports); no Part 573 report was among the files for four of the Ford and FCA campaigns, so their years and numbers are quoted from the dealer notices and owner letters. 448 files in all. 257 were read in full; 190 are revisions, twins or copies compared line by line with a document read in full (every line that differed was read), 29 of them identical in text; 1 is a near-copy of a first-search document. 167 files print one of the codes in their own text (P0755 in 19, P0740 or a sub-code of it in 70, P0743 in 19, P0744 in 8, P0750 in 1). Files whose pages are pictures or whose printed text was scrambled were read from page images (a few Ford, Subaru, Hyundai and Mazda files). Every quotation in the article was checked word for word against the document or complaint text; quotes from pages that are pictures were read from the images and could not be checked that way (one Ford bulletin, 10058228, was read from its image by the author). Coverage status in October 2026 is our computation from the terms printed in each document, not a statement by the manufacturer. No document prints an individual car's in-service date. Limits: complaints over-represent failures, refusals and expensive repairs; owners report diagnoses as they understood them; the Chevrolet, GMC and Ford complaint counts are large because those trucks are common and because of the 2025 and 2026 wave of valve body complaints, not necessarily because they fail more; most narratives name no code, so the code counts are small; a narrative that cites only a campaign number is not counted as a recall about this fault; and a transmission wiring-harness, lead-frame or mechatronic complaint that names no solenoid and no listed code was not sorted.
