One distinction on this truck is worth more than every price in this guide: a warranty extension expires, and a safety recall does not.
Toyota handled Tacoma frame corrosion through customer support programmes and warranty extensions — coverage stretched to 15 years with unlimited mileage on some trucks, and a 2016 class-action settlement covering roughly 1.5 million Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia vehicles. Those are manufacturer programmes with manufacturer deadlines, and for the affected model years those deadlines have passed. But rear leaf spring failure due to corrosion on 2005-2011 Tacomas is covered by a safety recall, and a safety recall technically has no sunset date for free repairs. Roughly 700,000 trucks fall within it. The failure mechanism is specific and serious: a corroded leaf can fracture, move, and contact the fuel tank or the rear brake line, severing one or both.

Run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup first, then get underneath with a torch and a hammer. On this truck the inspection matters more than the mileage, because the thing that ends most Tacomas leaves no warning light. 2005-2010. The heaviest complaint concentration, with several individual model years drawing double-digit recall counts.
2016-2017. A different profile entirely: the most powertrain complaints of any recent years, largely transmission behaviour with no recall attached, plus a rear differential leak recall covering almost 228,000 trucks and a crankshaft position sensor recall covering just under 32,000.
Salt state versus dry state. This is not a footnote on a Tacoma; it is the primary variable. The same truck in Arizona and in Ohio are different ownership propositions with different budgets.
The 5-minute check that dates your Tacoma better than the odometer
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2005-2011 truck, look specifically for the leaf spring recall — it has no expiry.
- Get underneath with a torch and a small hammer, and tap the frame rails in several places. A solid ring is healthy metal. A dull thud means the section has thinned from the inside.
- Focus on the front and rear leaf spring mounts. Both are high-stress areas and common failure points. Flaking, scaling or deformation is the finding that matters.
- Look behind the fuel tank. Hard to see, hard to clean, and therefore a prime spot for hidden rust.
- Look at the brake lines and fuel lines while you are there. Scaling on these is a safety item on any older truck.
- On a truck you are buying, be suspicious of a fresh undercoat. Thick rubbery coatings are a common way to conceal serious corrosion, and a recently undercoated older truck deserves a longer look, not a shorter one.

What actually determines your number
Where the truck has spent its winters. Larger than mileage, larger than year, larger than anything else in this guide. Corrosion is the defining variable on a Tacoma.
Whether the safety recall was performed. Free, no expiry, and it addresses a fuel-tank puncture risk. This is not a comfort item.
Whether a programme window closed before you bought the truck. Frame corrosion coverage was extended generously and then ended. A second owner who bought in 2020 may never have known the coverage existed at all.
Your model year cluster. 2005-2010 for corrosion; 2016-2017 for powertrain complaints. They are almost unrelated problem sets.

Whether the frame has been coated recently. Not because coating is bad, but because it removes your ability to inspect — and on a truck being sold, that timing is worth a question.
The ten problems, in the order they arrive
1 · Rear leaf spring corrosion — any mileage, 2005-2011
The tell. Frequently nothing until it matters, which is why the VIN lookup outranks any symptom. Where there are signs: a clunk or shift from the rear over bumps, a rear end that sits unevenly, visible flaking or separation at the spring pack, or a fuel smell.
What it actually is. Around 700,000 Tacoma trucks — particularly 4x4 and PreRunner models from 2005 to 2011 — use leaf springs mounted above the rear axle. Corrosion or stress can cause one of the leaves to separate and contact the fuel tank or brake line, severing one or both. A fractured leaf that punctures the fuel tank is a leak and fire hazard, which is precisely why this was handled as a safety recall rather than a warranty extension.
The distinction that makes this the most important item in the guide. A component failure that occurs suddenly and could disable the vehicle or contribute to a loss of control falls under federal safety legislation. That is the case here — and the repair is covered by a safety recall that is still current and technically does not have a sunset date for free repairs. Toyota's frame corrosion programmes, by contrast, were warranty extensions with expiry dates that have passed.
The cheap cause that is free. The VIN lookup. Recall remedies are performed at no charge and completion is recorded against the VIN. Toyota installs new rear leaf spring assemblies on all impacted vehicles.
Where this does not apply. Trucks outside the 2005-2011 range, and 2WD models without the affected spring configuration. The VIN answers it definitively in two minutes.
At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against the rear leaf spring recall for 2005-2011 Tacoma. If it applies and has not been performed, I'd like it scheduled and the completion documented."
2 · Frame corrosion — 90,000 miles and up, or any age in a salt state
The tell. Flaking or scaling rust on the frame rails. A dull thud rather than a solid ring when you tap the rail. Deterioration at the leaf spring mounting points. Perforation — actual holes — in advanced cases. There is no warning light and no noise from the cabin.
What it actually is. Corrosion of the load-bearing frame. Body rust is cosmetic; frame rust compromises structural integrity, and the documented chain on this truck runs through the rear spring mounts to the fuel tank and brake lines. In severe cases frames developed perforations larger than 10mm in diameter, which was Toyota's own threshold for frame replacement rather than repair.
What was covered, and why it ended. Toyota extended the rust perforation warranty on 1995-2000 Tacomas, covering over 800,000 trucks, and issued a recall for 2001-2003 Tundra frame rust. In 2016 it settled a class action covering roughly 1.5 million Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia vehicles for frame corrosion. Coverage on some Tacomas was extended to 15 years with unlimited mileage from the in-service date. Because these were warranty extensions and customer support programmes rather than safety recalls, the manufacturer set the window — and those windows have closed for the affected model years.
The cheap cause that is free and non-negotiable. Inspection. The tap test costs nothing: strike the frame in several places and listen for a solid ring against a dull thud. Check the front and rear leaf spring mounts, the area behind the fuel tank, the cross members and the suspension mounting points. Scaling rust that flakes off in layers indicates advanced corrosion.
Fix it yourself — the inspection and the prevention, not the repair. You can inspect, wash the underbody through winter, and treat surface rust before it becomes structural. The honest limit: you cannot assess or repair structural corrosion at home, and you should not try. If the tap test gives a dull thud, or you find perforation, that is a professional inspection and potentially the end of the truck's economic life — not a weekend with a wire brush.
Where this does not apply. In dry states this item barely exists. A Tacoma that has never seen a salted road is a fundamentally different proposition, and much of this guide's caution does not apply to it.
At the shop — say this: "Can you put it on the lift, tap-test the frame rails and spring mounts, and photograph anything you find? I want a documented rust baseline I can compare against next year, not just a pass or fail."

3 · Front brakes — 20,000 to 70,000 miles
The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that stops under hard pressure — the wear indicator at roughly 3mm. Grinding is low, gritty and felt through the pedal.
What it actually is. Normal consumption. Towing, load and hills all shorten it.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A squeal only on the first two damp-morning stops is surface rust — free. Ask for pad thickness in millimetres; above 4mm you are buying time you already have.
Where this does not apply. On a truck used for towing or carrying loads regularly, expect the short end of this range and treat mileage-based intervals as optimistic.
Fix it yourself — realistic. Front pads and rotors are a genuine driveway job: $130-$240 in parts, three hours, jack stands rated for the weight. The honest limit: on a salt-state truck the caliper slide pins and hardware are frequently seized, and a job that looks like three hours becomes a fight with corroded fasteners. If the first bolt does not move, stop.
At the shop — say this: "What's the actual pad thickness in millimetres front and rear, and are the rotors above minimum spec? If the pads are over 4 millimetres I'd rather wait."
4 · Rear differential leak — 30,000 to 100,000 miles (2016-2017)
The tell. A whine or growl from the rear that rises with road speed. A dark wet patch or fluid trail around the differential housing. In later stages, noise under load and a burning smell.
What it actually is. A leak path allowing differential fluid to escape. The consequence named in the campaign is that with a leak present the rear differential cannot function properly and may seize — which on a rear-drive truck at speed is not a comfort issue.
The cheap cause that is free. The VIN lookup. Almost 228,000 2016 and 2017 trucks were covered, and recall remedies are performed at no charge.
How to tell it from a wheel bearing. A bearing hum changes when you steer gently left and right; a differential whine does not respond to steering. That free test separates a $400 repair from a very different conversation.
Where this does not apply. Trucks outside the 2016-2017 range. And a whine that changes with steering is item 8, not this.
At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against the rear differential leak recall for 2016-2017 Tacoma. And can you inspect the housing for fluid loss and show me?"
5 · Crankshaft position sensor stall — 40,000 to 110,000 miles (2016-2017)
The tell. The engine cuts out while driving, sometimes restarting immediately and sometimes not until it has cooled. Often intermittent for weeks before becoming consistent, and frequently accompanied by a check-engine light.
What it actually is. The crankshaft position sensor tells the computer where the crank is. Without a reliable signal the engine cannot time ignition or fuel, so a failing sensor produces stalls rather than roughness. Just under 32,000 trucks were recalled for this.
The pattern worth recognising. A sensor failing thermally will stall the engine once hot and refuse to restart until it has cooled for twenty to forty minutes, then start perfectly. That pattern is close to diagnostic on its own and is routinely misread as a fuel pump — an expensive place to guess wrong.
The cheap cause that is free. The VIN lookup, first. Outside the campaign it is an ordinary sensor replacement at $250-$600 depending on access.
Where this does not apply. Trucks outside the recall scope, where this is simply a wear item. And a no-start that is a single click with bright dash lights is a starter, not this — the clicking guide covers that pattern.
At the shop — say this: "It stalls while driving and restarts after cooling. Please check this VIN against the crankshaft position sensor recall before we diagnose anything else."
Why is Tacoma frame rust repair no longer free when the leaf spring repair still is? Because they were handled under two different mechanisms, and the difference decides who pays. Frame corrosion was addressed through customer support programmes, warranty extensions and a 2016 class-action settlement covering roughly 1.5 million Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia vehicles. Those carry manufacturer deadlines, and coverage on some Tacomas ran 15 years from the in-service date before ending. Rear leaf spring failure was different: because a fractured spring can puncture the fuel tank, it was treated as a safety defect and handled through a recall covering roughly 700,000 trucks. Safety recalls do not carry a sunset date for free repairs the way warranty extensions do. 6 · Transmission behaviour on 2016-2017 trucks — 50,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. Hunting between gears, hesitation before a downshift, harsh or delayed engagement, and a general sense that the transmission is busier than it should be at light throttle.
What it actually is. A complex shift schedule managed largely in software, on trucks where owner complaint volume around the powertrain was the highest of any recent model years. Because no recall was issued, the repair cost falls to the owner.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The current transmission control calibration. Shift-quality complaints on modern automatics are frequently addressed by software before hardware, and it is the cheapest possible starting point. Ask for it explicitly and have it noted on the order.
The honest note. Some owners report improvement from calibration and fluid; others do not. This is a behaviour complaint more than a failure complaint for most trucks, and it is worth being clear with yourself about whether you are buying a repair or buying a different driving character.
Where this does not apply. Trucks outside 2016-2017, and any complaint that is a shudder from a stop rather than a shift-quality issue — describe it precisely, because the wording on the order drives the diagnosis.
At the shop — say this: "Before any hardware, is the transmission control module on the current calibration? Please note that on the order along with the fluid condition, then we'll reassess."
7 · Spare tire carrier corrosion — any mileage, 2001-2004
The tell. A rattle or knock from under the bed. Visible corrosion at the carrier mechanism. In many cases nothing at all until the spare is gone.
What it actually is. The spare tire carrier under the bed corrodes to the point where it can break and allow the spare wheel to come loose. Approximately 150,000 trucks from model years 2001-2004 were recalled in November 2012.
The cheap cause that is free. The VIN lookup, again. And in the meantime, a two-minute check: crank the spare down and back up, and look at the carrier while it is accessible.
Where this does not apply. Trucks outside 2001-2004. But note that on any older truck in a salt state, the spare carrier is worth inspecting regardless of campaign scope — it lives in the worst possible position for corrosion.
At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against the 2012 spare tire carrier recall for 2001-2004 Tacoma, and inspect the carrier while it's on the lift."
8 · Wheel bearings and suspension — 70,000 to 140,000 miles
The tell. A hum from around 40-50 mph rising with road speed and changing when you steer gently — that steering sensitivity names the side and distinguishes it from item 4.
What it actually is. Rolling elements wear and the assembly develops play. It worsens steadily and can eventually affect wheel-speed sensor readings.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A worn or cupped tire produces nearly the same drone. Rotate and drive: if the noise moves, it is tires.
The free confirmation. With the truck safely supported, spin the wheel by hand listening for a gritty rumble, then rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock feeling for play.
Where this does not apply. If the noise ignores steering input, look at the rear differential — item 4 — before buying a bearing.
At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I steer, so I think a bearing rather than the differential — but can we rotate the tires first, and show me the play by hand?"
How do you check a Toyota Tacoma frame for rust before buying one? With a hammer rather than with your eyes, because the corrosion that matters happens from the inside out. Tap the frame rails firmly in several places and listen: a solid ring means healthy metal, while a dull thud means the section behind the surface has thinned. Concentrate on the front and rear leaf spring mounts, which are high-stress areas and common failure points, and on the area behind the fuel tank, which is difficult to see and difficult to clean and therefore a prime spot for hidden rust. 9 · Air conditioning — 90,000 to 150,000 miles
The tell. Air that starts cold and fades warm, or never gets cold. Sometimes a clutch cycling rapidly, or no engagement click.
What it actually is. Refrigerant is not consumed, so a system that is low is a system that leaks. On a truck driven on gravel or unpaved roads, stone damage to the condenser is a genuinely likely explanation worth checking first.
The cheap causes. A failed relay gives no cold air with a healthy system. A blend door actuator produces a similar complaint from inside the dash.
Where this does not apply. A system that has been repeatedly recharged without the leak being found may already have compressor damage from lack of lubrication — in that case the cheap path has already been spent.
At the shop — say this: "Was a leak test performed, and where exactly is it leaking? Is there stone damage on the condenser, and can you check the relay before condemning the compressor?"
10 · Catalytic converter, wear and theft — 120,000 miles and up
The tell, version one — wear. A steady check-engine light with P0420, often with no drivability symptom. Frequently the first sign is failing an emissions inspection.
The tell, version two — theft. The truck suddenly sounds like a race car, with no gradual onset and no warning light beforehand. Pickups sit high enough for easy access underneath, which is why they feature heavily on theft lists.
What it actually is. For wear: the computer compares the oxygen sensors before and after the converter, and when their readings converge the code sets. That does not say the converter is broken.
The cheap causes for the wear version. A lazy downstream sensor ($180-$350 installed). A small exhaust leak upstream. An unresolved misfire poisoning the substrate.
The one demand that changes the conversation: Mode 6. Mode $06 reports the catalyst monitor's actual test result as a number against threshold. Ask for those values in writing before authorising anything. Our guide to expensive codes covers the pattern in full.
Where this does not apply. If the exhaust volume changed overnight, this is not a wear conversation — look underneath first and treat it as a theft and insurance matter.
At the shop — say this: "Before we replace the converter I want the Mode 6 catalyst values against threshold, the downstream sensor actually tested rather than assumed, and any misfire resolved first."
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up. The line at the very bottom is the one that ends Tacomas, and the defence against it is a $15 underbody wash and a hammer — both sitting near the top.
Your number, by which Tacoma you drive
Two rows there invert the guide entirely. A dry-state Tacoma is a genuinely different vehicle from a salt-state one — three of the ten items essentially disappear, and what remains is an unusually cheap truck to run. And a truck with a documented frame replacement under the old programmes is in the strongest position on this list, because the item that ends most Tacomas already happened to it and somebody else paid.
Should you buy a used Tacoma, and what to check
Most people searching for Tacoma problems are deciding whether to buy one, and on this truck the inspection is the decision.
Why the reputation is mostly deserved and mostly misdirected. Tacomas hold value because the mechanical package is durable. The reputation problem is corrosion, and corrosion is regional. Judging a Tacoma by its model year without knowing where it spent its winters is close to meaningless.
What is genuinely uncovered risk. Frame corrosion, now that the programmes have closed. That is the item that can end an otherwise sound truck, and it is the one with no free remedy remaining.
What is still free. The leaf spring recall on 2005-2011 trucks, with no sunset date. The 2001-2004 spare carrier recall. On 2016-2017 trucks, the differential leak and crank sensor campaigns.
The five-minute pre-purchase procedure:
- Run the VIN and note every campaign, open and completed.
- Get underneath with a hammer and tap the frame rails and both sets of spring mounts. A dull thud ends the viewing.
- Look behind the fuel tank with a torch.
- Ask when the frame was last coated, and be sceptical of a recent one.
- Ask where the truck has spent its winters — this question is worth more than the odometer reading.
- On a 2016-2017 truck, drive it through several gear changes at light throttle and decide whether the behaviour bothers you, because there is no recall to fix it.
The short version: a dry-state Tacoma with campaigns completed is one of the safest used purchases in this series. A salt-state truck needs the hammer before it needs a test drive, and no amount of mechanical condition compensates for a frame that thuds.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 — the VIN question. "What campaigns show open on this VIN, and specifically has the leaf spring recall been performed?" That one has no expiry.
Checkpoint 2 — the frame question. "Can you tap-test the rails and spring mounts and photograph what you find?" Ask for a documented baseline, not a verdict.
Checkpoint 3 — the diagnostic fee. "What's the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer, usually credited.
Checkpoint 4 — the steering test. "Does the noise change when you steer?" It separates a bearing from a differential, and on a 2016-2017 truck one of those may be a free recall.
Checkpoint 5 — the software question. "Is the transmission control module on the current calibration?" Before any hardware on a 2016-2017 truck.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Tacoma owners the most
Trap 1: the free recall nobody mentioned. The situation: a 2008 Tacoma with a rear clunk, whose owner has been told the frame programme expired. What the shop says: "That coverage ran out years ago. Rust is on you now." What is really happening: both statements can be true at once. The frame programme was a warranty extension and has expired; the leaf spring repair is a safety recall and has not. Price versus bill: $0 for the springs, whatever the frame costs separately. Your protective question: "The frame programme may have expired, but has the leaf spring recall been performed on this VIN?"
Trap 2: the differential quoted as a bearing. The situation: a whine at 45 mph on a 2016 Tacoma at 88,000 miles. What the shop says: "Wheel bearing, $550." What is really happening: a bearing hum changes with steering input; a differential whine does not. And on a 2016-2017 truck the differential may fall under a recall covering almost 228,000 vehicles. Price versus bill: $550 against potentially $0. Your protective question: "Does it change when I steer? And has the differential recall been checked on this VIN?"
Trap 3: the fresh undercoat. The situation: a 2009 Tacoma for sale with a beautifully black, thickly coated frame. What the seller says: "I had it undercoated to protect it." What is really happening: sometimes exactly that, and sometimes a thick rubbery coating concealing scaling rust underneath. The coating is not the problem; the timing and the inability to inspect are. Price versus bill: the difference between a good truck and a $4,000 frame. Your protective question: "When was this done, and can I tap-test the rails through it?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.
Scenario 1 — two answers on the same visit. A 2008 Tacoma owner is told the frame corrosion programme expired years ago, which is correct, and concludes that nothing about corrosion is covered. The leaf spring repair on 2005-2011 trucks is a safety recall without a sunset date, which is also correct. The two facts sit side by side and only one of them costs money. Lesson: "the coverage expired" is a true sentence that can still be the wrong answer to your question.
Scenario 2 — the whine with two possible bills. A whine at 45 mph on a 2016 truck, quoted as a wheel bearing at $550. A gentle steering input on a test drive distinguishes a bearing from the rear differential, and the differential on those years falls under a campaign covering almost 228,000 vehicles. Lesson: the free test comes before the paid diagnosis, and here it can move the bill to zero.

How can you tell a real Tacoma failure from an unnecessary repair quote? Two checks, and neither costs anything. First, the mechanism check: ask whether the item in question was handled as a safety recall or as a warranty extension, because on this truck those two words decide who pays. After the repair: verify, then prevent
Verify within a week. Recall work: completion documented against the VIN in writing. Bearing or differential: noise gone at the speed where it lived, confirmed with the same steering test. Brakes: no squeal, straight stops.
Photograph the frame annually. Same angles, same spots, dated. Corrosion is gradual enough that memory is useless and photographs are decisive — both for your own decisions and for an honest sale later.
