🚨 60-Second Triage2021-2024 Sierra with the 6.2L V8 and any knocking, banging or unusual engine noise: stop and read item 6. That is the recall's own warning language, and free coverage is attached. P0016 stored on a 6.2: GM's bulletin sends that truck straight to engine replacement. Engine that seized hot and restarted after cooling: a GM bulletin calls that early bearing failure. Tow it. Brake pedal harder than it was on a 2014-2018 truck: item 3; run the VIN today. Fine shudder at a steady cruise: item 2, and the first suspect is not the transmission.

Most guides tell you what can break. The Sierra needs a different opening, because here the useful question is what happens when the repair breaks too.

In April 2025 General Motors recalled 153,630 GMC Sierra 1500 pickups because their 6.2-litre V8 engines could destroy their own connecting rods and crankshafts. Dealers inspected them and either fitted a new engine or, if it passed, poured in a thicker oil. Then engines kept failing. In January 2026 federal investigators opened a query into whether the remedy worked, and in August 2026 escalated it into an Engineering Analysis covering 997,743 vehicles.

That sequence is the Sierra's real story, and almost nothing written about this truck reflects it. It also produced something nearly no owner has heard of: a GM special coverage running ten years or 150,000 miles from the in-service date, regardless of ownership, that pays for the engine. It was published as a dealer bulletin and never mailed to you. By the end of this guide you will know which of the ten failures belongs to your engine, trim and mileage, which carry a document number, and the cheap cause that gets skipped when the expensive one is quoted first.

How to use this guide

Establish two things before you read a single price: which engine is in your truck, and — if it is the 6.2 — whether it was built inside the recall window. Every entry has the same parts: the tell, what it actually is, the cheap cause that gets skipped, the confirmation test, where this does not apply, and the sentence to say at the counter.

The rule that overrides everything here is about paperwork rather than parts: on a Sierra, the document number is worth more than the diagnosis. Six of the ten items carry an active recall, a special coverage, a bulletin or an open federal investigation, and each can turn a four-figure quote into a zero — but only if somebody names the document. A special coverage published as a dealer bulletin simply does not surface the way a recall does, and asking by number closes that gap — the mechanism behind the warranty extensions owners never hear about.

Claims marked 🟢 rest on a document listed in the Sources section. Prices are shop-price estimates and owner-reported figures — marked ⚪, estimates rather than measurements from a dataset we own.

First: which Sierra do you actually have?

The engine split, which decides more than the model year.

  • 6.2-litre V8 (L87) — the engine at the centre of this guide, standard on Denali Ultimate. If yours was built between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024, go to item 6 first.
  • 5.3-litre V8 (L83, then L84 with Dynamic Fuel Management) — the volume engine, carrying the cylinder-deactivation lifter failure it shares with its Chevrolet twin; the Silverado guide by mileage has the full treatment.
  • 4.3-litre V6 (LV3) — the cheapest engine here to own, carrying neither the L87 bearing story nor the valvetrain exposure.
  • 2.7-litre turbo four — too young for settled patterns; treat any mileage window with suspicion, ours included.
  • 3.0-litre Duramax diesel — no deactivation question, but it sat inside a very large transmission recall. Item 8.

The transmission split. 2015-2018 trucks run the eight-speed 8L45 or 8L90, where torque converter clutch shudder lives. 2019 and newer trucks moved largely to the ten-speed, which has its own coverage document.

The trim split, which a Silverado guide cannot give you. GMC sells the same platform dearer, and the difference is hardware that costs money later: Denali trims add adaptive dampers, 22-inch wheels on low-profile tyres, and chrome accessories, one of which has its own recall. A Denali and an SLE at 120,000 miles are not the same truck to maintain — the split that also runs through the F-150 guide by mileage.

The 6-minute check that dates your Sierra better than the odometer

Do this cold, on level ground, with a torch and a phone.

  1. Run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup, then GM's owner site, and compare. Any open engine campaign on a 6.2 → item 6, today. Any brake campaign → items 1 and 3.
  2. Open the hood, start it, and listen at the front for a full minute. A deep knock on a 6.2 → item 6, and stop driving. A lighter rhythmic tick on a 5.3 → item 7. A tick that fades as the truck warms → item 10.
  3. Read the oil fill cap. 0W-40 plus an insert in the glovebox means the recall inspection was done and passed.
  4. Pull the dipstick and scan for codes, or get a free read at a parts store. Low oil under 3,000 miles since the change → item 5. P0016 on a 6.2 → item 6.
  5. Hold a steady 45 to 60 mph on light throttle, then press the brake pedal hard at a stop. A shudder or surge → item 2. A pedal noticeably harder than before → item 3.
  6. Get underneath and look at the rockers, cab corners and brake lines. Bubbling or flaking → item 10, which on an older northern truck outranks everything mechanical here.

What actually determines your number

Which engine, and when it was built. The largest single variable, and not a mileage question: two 2023 Denalis with identical odometers are different propositions if one has a 6.2 built in April 2023.

Whether a document covers it. A recall, a special coverage and an open investigation have three different consequences, and knowing which you are in changes the bill more than any negotiation.

Whether the noise was driven on. In items 6 and 7, the gap between catching a bearing or a lifter early and driving until metal circulates is the difference between a repairable engine and a replaced one.

Your trim. Adaptive dampers, 22-inch wheels and the larger brake package carry a premium that appears nowhere in a Silverado guide.

Independent versus dealer. Typically 30 to 50 percent on labour-heavy work — but anything covered by a campaign belongs at a dealer anyway. The full comparison sorts which jobs fall where.

Whether you tow, and where you park. Load and heat are cumulative and the odometer does not record them: a Sierra towing regularly at 80,000 miles has the service profile of a commuter at 130,000, and in a salt state corrosion moves to the top of this list.

The tell. There isn't one, and that is the point: the brake control module software could fail to light the warning lamp when fluid drops, so a genuine slow leak would develop silently.

What it actually is. A software non-compliance, remedied by a module reflash. Two neighbouring brake actions deserve the same five minutes: a 2019 campaign covering 148,055 Silverado and Sierra 1500 trucks whose software error could disable electronic brake assist, and a 2020 campaign covering 20,352 trucks with caliper bolts that may not have been heat treated.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The check itself. Owners assume a letter would have reached them, and completion-rate data says otherwise for every manufacturer — nothing is wrong, so nothing prompts you.

The confirmation test. Enter your VIN into NHTSA's lookup, then GM's owner site, and compare — they populate differently, and a special coverage published as a dealer bulletin often appears in one and not the other.

Where this does not apply. The 24V-674 campaign is 2023 model year only on the Sierra 1500; the caliper bolt action is 2020 only and the software error 2019 only. None reach the heavy-duty 2500 or 3500.

At the shop — say this: "Please run my VIN against open campaigns including any handled over the air, and print what is open, what is closed, and the completion date for each."

2 · Shudder at a steady cruise — and the part that is not the transmission — 20,000 to 80,000 miles

The tell. A fine vibration at a steady cruise between 25 and 80 mph on light throttle, which owners describe as rumble strips or rough expansion joints. Some feel it more as a surge; it disappears under hard acceleration and is often worse warm.

What it actually is. Two different faults produce that sensation, and the Sierra is unusual in having a GM bulletin for each. The transmission version is 18-NA-355, "Shake and/or Shudder During Light Throttle Acceleration Between 25 and 80 MPH (40 and 128 KM/H) at Steady Speed," naming GMC Sierra Models 2015 to 2018 with the L83, L86 and L8B engines on the 8L45 and 8L90, corrected by a fluid exchange billed at 1.1 hours.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The magnet. GM's diagnostic is four sentences: while duplicating the shudder, watch Camshaft Position Variance in GDS2; target is zero degrees, three to four is not uncommon, and beyond that it "could potentially cause a noticeable Shudder or Surge concern." It gets skipped for a structural reason rather than a dishonest one — "shudder on a GM truck" has become a phrase meaning torque converter, which sends the truck to the transmission bay rather than to a scan tool.

The confirmation test, in under thirty minutes. Ask for the Camshaft Position Variance number while the shudder is being duplicated, not a verdict. Then note whether it happens while the transmission is shifting or holding a gear — 18-NA-355 specifies the condition occurs when it is not actively shifting.

Where this does not apply. 22-NA-080 is a diagnostic bulletin, not a warranty program: it buys a direction, not a free repair. 18-NA-355 stops at the 2018 Sierra Models and covers eight-speed trucks only. Climate changes the odds — the appellate record in that litigation notes drivers in dry climates saw fewer instances of shudder, because less moisture polluted the fluid.

At the shop — say this: "Before we discuss the torque converter, please duplicate the shudder and give me the Camshaft Position Variance figure per bulletin 22-NA-080, noted on the invoice. If it is under four degrees, let's do the fluid exchange per 18-NA-355 and record the mileage."

The tell. The pedal becomes harder and needs more effort for the same stop, and because it degrades over months most drivers adapt without noticing. The recall lists a more useful warning: occupants "may hear a ticking noise coming from the engine compartment," and a "Service Brake Assist" message appears within two to five minutes of vacuum falling below 10 kPa.

What it actually is. The pump is lubricated by engine oil reaching it through a filter screen, and GM's filing describes sludge accumulating there, restricting flow and reducing vacuum — noting plainly that "failure to follow recommended oil change intervals could contribute to this condition." A secondary hydraulic boost system takes over, but as calibrated it was limited at low speeds, and that calibration is what the recall fixes.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Oil discipline, skipped because nobody connects an oil change to a brake pedal. Fresh oil will not revive an already-degraded pump, but it is the only lever that slows the mechanism, and it costs a fraction of a pump.

The confirmation test. Engine off, pump the pedal several times to exhaust stored vacuum, then hold firm pressure and start the engine. On a healthy system the pedal drops noticeably; if it barely moves, assist is weak.

Where this does not apply. The Sierra 1500 population is 2014-2018 built September 3, 2013 to August 31, 2017; GM states earlier trucks used a different design and later ones do not have the affected pump. Trucks already serviced under program N182206730 were excluded, and a 2019 or newer Sierra is not in this campaign.

At the shop — say this: "Please confirm whether recall 19V-645 has been completed on this VIN and give me the date. If it has, I understand that was a module reprogram rather than a pump — I'd like vacuum assist tested separately and the result written down."

4 · The ten-speed's harsh shift — and a 15-year coverage nobody mentions — 30,000 to 100,000 miles

The tell. A bang or clunk into gear rather than a slur, most obvious on the 1-2 or 2-3 upshift when cold, or on a downshift coming to a stop. Some describe a flare, where engine speed rises briefly between gears.

What it actually is. Three documented causes sit behind the same complaint. Bulletin 22-NA-182 covers harsh shift, shudder, surge, stall, flare and overheating on 6L80, 6L90, 8L90, 10L80, 10L90 and 10L1000 vehicles, naming a twisted transmission cooler line on low-mileage trucks.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The special coverage, which is not cheap so much as free. N242454441 states GM "covers the condition described above for a period of 15 years or 150,000 miles (240,000km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership." A 2020 Sierra with a harsh shift and a P0747 is inside that window, and almost nobody asks — because the bulletin is filed under a name, "Momentary Rear Wheel Lock-Up," that sounds like somebody else's problem.

The confirmation test. Ask for the stored codes first, specifically whether P0747 is present, and note when the symptom happens: cold, warm, on upshift, downshift or engagement. The transmission slipping guide separates a genuine slip, where engine speed rises with no matching acceleration, from a harsh engagement.

Where this does not apply. The special coverage runs 2020 to 2022 on the Sierra 1500 — a 2019 or 2023 truck is outside it whatever the symptom, and 24-NA-167 is narrower still. None of this reaches the 2015-2018 eight-speed trucks, whose complaint is item 2.

At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against Special Coverage N242454441 — that is the transmission control valve coverage, fifteen years or 150,000 miles from in-service. Also tell me whether P0747 is stored, and whether my transmission calibration is current per bulletin 24-NA-167, before we discuss any internal work."

5 · Oil consumption on the deactivating V8 — 40,000 to 100,000 miles

The tell. The dipstick sits lower at 4,000 miles than at 1,000, and eventually the truck wants a quart between changes. Usually no smoke, no puddle, no warning light — which is the problem, because the only instrument that detects it is a dipstick and a habit.

What it actually is. A deactivating engine spends part of its life on half its cylinders, with oil control at the rings and valve stem seals working in a regime it was not designed around. On this engine family, consumption and valvetrain failure are not separate topics: low and degraded oil is consistently associated with the lifter failure in item 7 and the bearing distress in item 6.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Checking. The whole remedy at this stage is a dipstick, a notebook and a quart behind the seat.

Fix it yourself, with an honest limit. The measuring is a home job and it is the part that matters: park level, wait five minutes after shutdown, wipe, reinsert fully, read, and write down date and odometer at every fill for a month. Shortening the interval to 5,000 miles at the correct grade is also a home job. The honest limit: stop there. Do not chase consumption with oil thicker than the fill cap specifies, and do not add thickening additives — on a truck inside the 25V-274 population that grade is part of a federal remedy, and changing it complicates a warranty conversation you may badly need later.

The confirmation test. Ask a dealer for a formal oil consumption test — oil changed and marked, the truck driven a set distance, the level measured against a standard. The value is that the result enters your service history in writing, which is the difference between a case and an anecdote later.

Where this does not apply. The 4.3-litre V6 does not carry deactivation in the form that drives this item, and a diesel Sierra is a different conversation. On the 2.7 turbo four the data is much thinner, so treat any mileage window for that engine — including this one — as unsupported.

At the shop — say this: "I'd like a documented oil consumption test with the procedure and results recorded in my service history — not an opinion about whether this is normal for the engine."

6 · The 6.2L L87: rod bearings, the recall, and the coverage almost nobody claims — any mileage, 2021-2024

The tell. GM's filing lists it in language a service adviser will recognise: drivers may be alerted "from: (a) knocking, banging, or other unusual engine noises; (b) illumination of the check engine light; and/or (c) engine-performance issues, including hesitation, high RPMs, abnormal shifting, reduced propulsion, or a no-start condition." Bulletin 23-NA-170 adds the strangest version: an engine that locks up hot then refires once cooled — "a sign of an early bearing failure."

What it actually is. In April 2025 GM recalled 597,630 vehicles with the 6.2-litre V8, of which 153,630 are 2021-2024 Sierra 1500 pickups — the largest single model group, ahead of 107,244 Silverado 1500s. The filing names two supplier root causes: "rod-bearing damage from sediment on connecting rods and crankshaft-oil galleries" and "out of specification crankshaft dimensions and surface finish." GM counted 28,102 US field complaints, 14,332 alleging loss of propulsion.

The remedy, and why it stopped being the end of the story. Under N252494000 a dealer runs a PicoScope inspection: 2,000 rpm until oil temperature reaches 90 degrees Celsius, a sensor at the oil cooler line junction block records a waveform, and software returns a pass or fail. A truck that fails — or arrives with a P0016 code or an audible rod knock — goes straight to engine replacement, 18.5 hours of labour in two-wheel drive and 18.6 in four-wheel. A truck that passes gets 0W-40, a new fill cap and a manual insert. But NHTSA opened Recall Query RQ26-001 on January 16, 2026 to test whether that worked, and on August 20, 2026 closed it and opened Engineering Analysis EA26-005 across 997,743 vehicles of the 2021-2026 model years. Its resume records 499 post-remedy engine failures — 473 after the oil change, 26 after a complete engine replacement — plus 191 in engines built after the recall window. GM itself reported 6,953.

The cheap cause that gets skipped — and here it is not cheap, it is free. Special Coverage N252494003. Alongside the recall GM published a bulletin stating it "covers if an engine failure occurs in the vehicle as a result of the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership." Dealers replace the engine at no charge, and owners who already paid may seek reimbursement.

The confirmation test. Read your oil fill cap. If it says 0W-40 and there is a manufacturer insert in the glovebox, the truck has been through the inspection and passed — which tells you both that the campaign was done and which remedy you got.

Where this does not apply. Only the 6.2-litre V8 with RPO L87 is involved: GM states "vehicles outside of this window and vehicles equipped with other engines are not included in this recall." The recall's model years stop at 2024, though EA26-005 extends the investigation through 2026 — an investigation is not an entitlement. And the special coverage clock runs from the in-service date, not from your purchase.

At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against recall 25V-274 and also against Special Coverage N252494003 specifically, not just open recalls. I understand that coverage runs ten years or 150,000 miles from the in-service date regardless of ownership. Please tell me the in-service date on file and whether the PicoScope inspection has been performed."

How do you know whether a knock on a GMC Sierra is a bearing or something harmless? By what changes it. A rod bearing knock follows engine speed exactly, is deepest under load, and does not fade as the engine warms — and on a 6.2 inside the recall window it belongs to item 6 until proven otherwise. An exhaust manifold leak ticks sharply at cold start and quietens as metal expands. An accessory bearing changes when the drive belt comes off. A collapsing lifter is lighter and rhythmic rather than deep. Those distinctions decide thousands of dollars and they are acoustic rather than electronic, which is why a scan tool so often returns nothing useful on a truck that is plainly making a noise. 7 · Lifter collapse on the deactivating 5.3 — 60,000 to 130,000 miles

The tell. A rhythmic tick that follows engine speed, appearing over days rather than in one moment, often with a cylinder-specific misfire code and a stability control message. Owners describe a sewing machine. It does not fade as the engine warms, which is the distinction from item 10.

What it actually is. A deactivating lifter has collapsed and no longer follows the camshaft lobe correctly, and because lifter and lobe touch under spring pressure at every revolution it machines the camshaft it rides on — the entire economics of the repair. Owner reports put lifter failure on a 2017 Sierra around $5,800 at roughly 73,000 miles, while one itemised dealer quote splits a lifter-plus-camshaft job into $4,000 and $2,500.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Oil, and the interval rather than the brand: 5,000 miles at the correct grade is the only preventive lever an owner controls, skipped because the oil life monitor lets a commuter run far longer. The second is cheaper still: reading the misfire code properly, because a cylinder-specific misfire on a deactivating cylinder with a fresh tick is a different message from a random one. The engine knocking guide separates a lifter tick from a deeper bearing knock.

The confirmation test. Record the engine cold, then again after fifteen minutes: a lifter tick is present in both and often louder warm, while an exhaust manifold tick is loudest cold and fades. 23-NA-170 adds a test you can request by name — remove the oil filter and inspect it for bearing material, pouring the oil through a white shop towel to make debris visible. Metal there means the engine has already begun consuming itself.

Where this does not apply. The 4.3-litre V6 does not carry this failure mode, and a 3.0 diesel Sierra is outside it entirely. The window above is a centre of mass rather than a boundary: documented failures exist well below 60,000 miles and plenty of trucks pass 250,000 without one.

At the shop — say this: "Please pull the oil filter and inspect it for bearing material before we discuss any repair, per bulletin 23-NA-170. If there is a noise, I do not want the torque converter backed off to isolate it — that bulletin says the result is misleading."

The tell. A momentary loss of drive, a harsh engagement, or in the worst described case the rear wheels locking. GM filed it as a safety recall precisely because the failure mode is a wheel lock-up rather than a shift-quality issue.

What it actually is. A transmission control valve can fail in the ten-speed fitted to the diesel trucks. GM's remedy was new transmission control module software that detects a defective valve, backed by a special coverage program paying for the transmission repair on trucks the software flags.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Re-checking a recall you already had done. The existence of 26V-083 proves a completed recall is not always a completed repair, and the only way to find out you are in the follow-up population is to run the VIN again.

The confirmation test. Run the VIN and ask whether both 24V-797 and 26V-083 are closed, with dates. If the remedy software flagged a defective control valve, ask whether the special coverage repair was performed or only the software installed — two different events, and only one replaces hardware.

Where this does not apply. This is a diesel-only campaign on the 1500 — a gasoline Sierra of the same years is not in it whatever its shift quality feels like, and that complaint belongs to item 4.

At the shop — say this: "Please confirm the status of both 24V-797 and 26V-083 on this VIN, and tell me whether the remedy software flagged a defective control valve — and if it did, whether the transmission repair under the special coverage was actually performed."

The tell. The ride changes character rather than failing outright — busier over expansion joints, one corner thumping, or a suspension message on the driver information centre. On the accessory side it is visible: a chrome grille deflector whose mounting points have begun to crack.

What it actually is. Two unrelated things sharing a trim badge. The grille deflector recall is simple: GM found the attachments could fracture, letting the deflector become a road hazard, and dealers reinforce every attachment point free of charge.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Checking whether the ride complaint is a damper at all. A busy or thumping ride on 22-inch wheels is very often a tyre — a flat spot, a shifted belt, or a hard low-profile carcass on cold rubber — and a rotation with a road-force balance costs a fraction of a corner.

The confirmation test. Swap the front wheels side to side and drive the same road. If the thump moves with the wheel, it is the wheel; if it stays, it is the corner.

Where this does not apply. An SLE or SLT on conventional dampers and smaller wheels does not have this item at all. The grille deflector recall is 2022 only, and only trucks actually fitted with the chrome deflector — a Denali without it is not in it, and neither is any Silverado.

At the shop — say this: "Before we discuss dampers, please road-force balance and rotate the wheels and tell me whether the complaint moves with the wheel. Also confirm whether this truck has Adaptive Ride Control or the older magnetic system, and check whether recall 25V-060 applies to this VIN."

The tell. A sharp tick at cold start that fades as the truck warms is an exhaust manifold gasket or a snapped stud — the tick you are relieved to have rather than the one in item 7. A drone from one front corner that changes with steering load is a hub bearing; the grinding-when-braking guide covers the braking version.

What it actually is. The ordinary end-of-life cluster of a full-size truck, arriving together because everything was fitted on the same day. Two parts are Sierra-specific enough to name.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Rotation, then a photograph. A front-end drone is a hub bearing far less often than owners assume — a cupped tyre produces almost the same sound, and a rotation is free with most services.

Fix it yourself, with an honest limit. The inspection is a home job and it is the valuable part: a torch, a screwdriver handle to tap suspicious areas, a phone camera, twenty minutes on your back. Sound metal rings; rotted metal thuds. The honest limit: inspect, do not repair. Do not weld or patch a corroded brake line, and do not attempt a hub bearing on a truck whose knuckle bolts are corroded in place — a snapped bolt in an aluminium knuckle turns a bearing job into a knuckle job.

The confirmation test. For the tick: record it cold, then warm. Fades warm means manifold; persists or worsens means item 7.

Where this does not apply. In a dry-state truck the corrosion half barely appears, and a southwestern Sierra at 180,000 miles can be sound in a way a northern one at 120,000 is not. The condenser cluster sits on the 2014-2016 trucks rather than across the range.

At the shop — say this: "Please rotate the tyres before we discuss a hub bearing, and photograph the brake lines and rockers so I have a baseline. If the tick fades as the engine warms, I'd like the exhaust manifold studs checked rather than the valvetrain."

Should you keep a high-mileage Sierra or sell it? The honest test is not the odometer but whether the next repair is documented or open-ended. A brake vacuum pump, a transmission control valve, an L87 engine and a grille deflector all carry a document number, a defined remedy and often a price of zero, and none of them should end a truck's life. A rotted brake line, a rusted rocker and a corroded cab corner have no document number, cannot be predicted from mileage and cannot be capped. That is the real decision past 150,000 miles: the mechanical problems here are mostly bounded, and corrosion is not. Photograph the underside every spring and record the engine while it is healthy, and you will decide with evidence rather than with a quote in your hand. The 6.2L built March 2021 to May 2024 row reverses the usual logic: normally the most expensive engine demands the biggest reserve, but here the right move is to hold no reserve and instead establish coverage under N252494003, because a documented failure inside ten years and 150,000 miles is a free engine while an undocumented one is the largest number on the ladder. And the salt state row reorders everything above it, because a rotted brake line has no bulletin number, no defined remedy and no ceiling — the only genuinely uncapped item here.

Best and worst GMC Sierra 1500 years to buy

The useful version of this question is not which years are good, but which have a document attached.

Which GMC Sierra 1500 model years should you avoid? The question is framed wrongly for this truck, because the years with the worst reputations are also the years with the strongest paperwork. Owner databases rate 2015 the worst model year and engine problems the worst category, yet a 2015 truck sits inside a brake recall whose remedy is free. The 2021 to 2024 trucks with the 6.2 carry the largest engine recall in this guide, and they are the only Sierras with a written ten-year, 150,000-mile engine coverage attached to them. The genuinely risky purchase is not a recalled truck but an undocumented one: a truck whose in-service date nobody can produce, whose recall completions cannot be shown, and whose underside was steam-cleaned before sale. The year owner databases rate worst is 2015. CarComplaints names 2015 the worst model year and engine problems the worst category, noting that although the 2014 truck carries more complaints overall, 2015 is rated worse "because of other possible factors such as higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage." The 2014-2015 pair share two clusters: condenser failures in the low sixty-thousands of miles, and the brake vacuum pump behind recall 19V-645.

The years to inspect hardest: 2015 to 2018. These carry the eight-speed and the shudder documented in 18-NA-355 and litigated in Speerly v. General Motors.

The years that need the most paperwork, and reward it most: 2021 to 2024 with the 6.2. These are the 153,630 Sierras inside recall 25V-274. For a buyer who will not do the paperwork that is a reason to walk; for one who will, it is the opposite, because these are the only Sierras carrying a written promise of a free engine for ten years or 150,000 miles.

The quietly sensible years: 2020 to 2022, whatever the engine. These sit inside Special Coverage N242454441, which covers the worn transmission control valve for fifteen years or 150,000 miles regardless of ownership — the longest coverage window on this page and the least known.

The years to treat as unsettled: 2025 and 2026. Outside the recall window but inside the scope of EA26-005, which extended the investigation to L87 engines built after the recall's production period closed. That is not a defect finding.

What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 — Did you check special coverages as well as open recalls? Two different queries in the same system, and on the Sierra the second is where the money is.

Checkpoint 2 — Is the concern reproducible, and did you reproduce it? A shudder that was not duplicated has not been diagnosed; ask what speed and conditions were used.

Checkpoint 3 — What did the scan tool show? Ask for codes with freeze-frame data, and for the live parameters a bulletin names — Camshaft Position Variance in item 2, P0747 in item 4.

Checkpoint 4 — Is there a bulletin for this symptom, and what does it say to do first? Most of the money here is saved between step one and step two of a procedure.

Checkpoint 5 — What is the cheap version of this repair, and why is it not the answer here? A shop that can explain why the fluid exchange or the magnet will not solve your problem has diagnosed it; one that cannot has quoted it.

Checkpoint 6 — What goes on the invoice? Mileage, calibration levels, live values and completion dates — with a federal investigation open against this engine, your service history is the asset.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Sierra owners the most

Trap 1 — The noise in the bellhousing. The situation: a knock that seems to come from between engine and transmission. What the shop says: the transmission is making it, and disconnecting the torque converter proved it. What is really happening: bulletin 23-NA-170 tells technicians not to run that test, because "replacing the transmission does not resolve the noise condition." Price versus bill: minutes against a transmission. The protective question: "Can we inspect the oil filter for bearing material instead?"

Trap 2 — The shudder that is automatically the converter. The situation: a fine vibration at a steady cruise. What the shop says: torque converter clutch shudder, and here is the quote. What is really happening: it may be, but 22-NA-080 documents a camshaft position actuator magnet producing the same sensation and warns that customers mistake it for a transmission concern. Price versus bill: one diagnostic hour against a converter. The protective question: "Can I have the Camshaft Position Variance reading, on the invoice, before we discuss the converter?"

Trap 3 — The completed recall that was not the whole repair. The situation: you had a campaign performed, so you assume the matter is closed. What the shop says: the recall shows complete on your VIN. What is really happening: the L87 remedy is under federal investigation with 499 post-remedy failure reports on file. Price versus bill: one VIN question against an engine. The protective question: "Is there any follow-up campaign or special coverage attached to a recall that already shows complete?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — worked examples built from documented procedures and published price ranges, written to show where a number comes from rather than to report what any one person paid.

Scenario one: a 2022 Denali Ultimate with the 6.2 and a knock. Ask a shop with no access to the campaign system and the answer is an engine — parts plus roughly 18.6 hours from GM's own labour guide, in the neighbourhood of the $9,741 midpoint owners report federally. Ask a GMC dealer to check the VIN against 25V-274 and N252494003 and the same repair is free inside ten years and 150,000 miles. Lesson: the diagnosis is identical and the invoice is not.

Scenario two: a 2017 Sierra with a shudder at 55 mph. Ask for a torque converter and you are quoted one, in the $3,200 to $8,500 band owners report. Ask for the Camshaft Position Variance figure first, per 22-NA-080, and either it is over four degrees and the answer is a magnet, or it is under and you proceed to the fluid exchange in 18-NA-355, which owners report at around $350. Lesson: the order of tests, not the technician's skill, sets the price.

Scenario three: a 2021 Sierra with a harsh shift and a P0747. Ask for a transmission and you get a transmission quote. Ask whether N242454441 applies, and a truck inside fifteen years and 150,000 miles from in-service has the valve work covered regardless of who owns it now. Lesson: with this many open programmes, the first question is never mechanical.

Your situation right now: four playbooks

"I have a 6.2 and I just heard a knock." Arrange a tow, not a drive. Call a GMC dealer and use the item 6 script, naming both 25V-274 and N252494003.

"I have a shudder and a quote." Do nothing for a week, and get the Camshaft Position Variance reading in writing.

"I am buying a used Sierra this month." Get the VIN before the test drive and run it against both databases, asking for the in-service date, the recall completions and the fluid history.

"I have 160,000 miles and I am deciding whether to keep it." Photograph the underside first and price the corrosion honestly — the uncapped side of the ledger. Then check each mechanical item against this page for a document number: documented items have ceilings.

After the repair: verify, then prevent

Verify. After a campaign repair, get the completion date on paper. After an engine replacement, ask for the new engine's serial number on the invoice — GM's procedure requires the technician to submit it.

Prevent. Oil at the grade printed on your fill cap, every 5,000 miles, receipt kept. A transmission fluid service on schedule rather than on symptom, an underside photograph each spring, and a thirty-second recording of the engine while it is healthy — the argument here turns on a noise that was not there last month.

Your action plan: 10 minutes, today, this week

In the next 10 minutes:

  1. Run your VIN through NHTSA's lookup and then GM's owner site, and compare the two.
  2. If you have a 6.2, read the oil fill cap and check the glovebox for the manufacturer insert.
  3. If there is a new knock on a 6.2, stop and read item 6 before driving anywhere else.

Today:

  1. Get the codes read free at a parts store, asking for freeze-frame and pending codes.
  2. If there is a noise, record thirty seconds cold and again warm, then run it through a free sound check — cold versus warm is the manifold-versus-valvetrain question.
  3. Check any quote against the cheap-cause paragraph for that item, and use the script.

What we looked for and did not find. There is no GM special coverage, warranty extension or recall for Active Fuel Management or Dynamic Fuel Management collapsed-lifter or camshaft failure on the 5.3L or 6.2L in the Sierra 1500. We searched NHTSA's full manufacturer-communications index for Sierra documents naming lifters, camshafts or fuel management alongside special coverage or warranty extension; every Sierra 1500 recall from 2019 through 2026; and NHTSA's investigation file. The only lifter coverage of any kind is N232413430 above, which expired on May 31, 2026, so item 7 is out of pocket unless a dealer offers goodwill. There is also no NHTSA investigation into the ten-speed in the 1500, and no recall for the MultiPro tailgate.
