๐Ÿšจ 60-Second Triage โ€” Amber ABS light only, pedal firm and normal: your ordinary brakes work; anti-lock is off. Drive gently, leave double the distance, get codes read this week. ABS plus a red BRAKE light, or a soft or sinking pedal: check the parking brake and fluid; if the fluid is low or the pedal is soft, do not drive. ABS light with smoke or a burning smell from under the hood: pull over, switch off, get out; several Hyundai and Kia recalls name exactly those warnings. 2015-2019 Nissan Murano, Maxima, Pathfinder or Infiniti QX60 with the ABS light on for 10 seconds or longer after start: Nissan's recall letter says stop driving and park outdoors. ABS light with a hum that grows with speed: a wheel bearing is likely involved; book it soon.

An ABS light is not a brake failure warning. It is the anti-lock computer switching itself off because one of its inputs stopped making sense, with the ordinary hydraulic brakes still working underneath. Federal rules require that: under FMVSS 135 a car with an anti-lock failure must still stop from 100 km/h within 85 metres.

What turns the light into an emergency is what arrives with it: a red BRAKE light, a sinking pedal, a burning smell, a hum from a wheel. Kia's letters for 1,730,192 recalled cars say that with the ABS light and a burning smell or smoke, "pull over to a safe location and turn OFF the engine." GM's bulletin for more than twenty models fixes the common sensor fault with a brush: "No parts are needed for this concern."

How to use this guide

Each route is defined by what comes with the ABS light: other lamps, sounds, pedal feel.

One rule overrides everything: the second light decides whether you drive, and the codes decide what you buy. A lone amber ABS light gives you days; the same light beside a red BRAKE warning, a soft pedal or smoke gives you minutes. And no part should be ordered until someone reads the ABS module's own codes, which a basic engine reader cannot see.

First: which lights are on together?

FMVSS 135 requires a warning for "any electrical functional failure in an antilock" system; a separate ABS lamp must include yellow. The main brake warning, for low fluid, lost pressure or the parking brake, uses red. That split is the first diagnosis.

A traction light flashing while you pull away on a slippery road is the system working. GM's exception: one flashing at low speed with no slip, which it traces to debris on a sensor ring.

The 5-minute driveway protocol

  1. Photograph the dashboard before you switch off. ABS alone, ABS plus traction, and ABS plus red BRAKE are different routes.
  2. Release the parking brake and press the pedal hard for ten seconds, engine running. Firm is good. A pedal that sinks or feels soft means stop and arrange a tow: Route 3.
  3. Check the brake fluid reservoir. Below MIN points at worn pads or a leak. A burning smell near the ABS unit on a recalled Hyundai or Kia means park outside: Route 4.
  4. Restart and watch the lamp. On, then off within a few seconds, is the required bulb check. Staying on is a stored fault. On Nissan's 19V-807 models, 10 seconds matters.
  5. Drive slowly with a window down, then weave gently at 30 to 40 mph. A hum that changes as you load one side is a bearing: Route 2. A click at parking lot speeds is often a dirty sensor ring: Route 1.
  6. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and the owner site. An open recall changes who pays and where you park tonight: Route 4.
  7. Read the ABS codes, not just engine codes. Many cheap readers only see the engine computer.

What actually determines your number

Where the signal broke. A dirty ring or wet connector is labour only; a sensor is a small part; a bearing a bigger one; a module or pump the top.

Whether anyone read the ABS module's codes. Without them, a shop is choosing between a $150 sensor and a $1,300 module by guesswork.

Your VIN. Recalls are defined by build dates and parts, not symptoms.

What the part is built into. On many cars the sensor ring lives inside the hub bearing; on some hybrids the actuator, booster and master cylinder are one assembly.

Rust and salt. Corroded harnesses and rings recur through these bulletins, and seized sensors snap on removal.

Programming. Ford's SSM 53176 shows a replacement module on a 2013-2016 Escape keeping its light on until a dealer tool runs the setup routine.

Two rows invert the guide. On the Hyundai and Kia recall models an ABS light is a possible fire warning, so the question is where the car sleeps tonight. On the 2006-2010 Fusion family, Ford's report lists no warning at all, so a quiet dashboard proves nothing.

The tell. The ABS light, often with traction and stability lamps, that comes and goes after rain, a wash, bumps or turns. Brakes feel normal.

What it actually is. Each wheel has a sensor reading a toothed or magnetic ring; lose one clean signal and anti-lock shuts down. GM's bulletin 17-NA-047, for Traverse, Equinox, Malibu, Cruze and other 2007-2017 models, traces ABS, Service Traction and Service StabiliTrak lamps with codes C0035 to C0050 to "ferrous metallic debris stuck to the wheel speed sensor magnetic encoder ring," and states: "No parts are needed for this concern." GM's PIT5707 found "debris from manufacturing" on the ring of 2020 Silverado and Sierra HD trucks. Ford's 20-2323 blames a sensor harness "rubbing on the front wheels" on 2020 Escape and Corsair models, and GM's PIC5992 says a broken Impala harness fault "may be more easily duplicated while turning." Water is the other half: Hyundai's bulletin 17-01-009-1 says seawater in the rear sensor housing of certain Santa Fe models can "temporarily illuminate the ABS and/or ESC warning lights" until it dries, and Kia's SC148 fixed the same on 2011-2015 two-wheel-drive Sorentos in coastal states.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. How the car was last moved. BMW's SI B34 06 16 lists sensor faults after "a towing operation with a raised axle," a lift or a roller test stand, and its correction begins "Delete the fault memory."

Fix it yourself โ€” find the dirty corner before buying a sensor. Read the ABS codes; GM maps them: "C0035 Left Front Corner, C0040 Right Front Corner, C0045 Left Rear Corner, C0050 Right Rear Corner." With that corner safely on stands and the wheel off, follow the sensor wire to its connector, looking for rub marks, cracked insulation and green corrosion; GM suggests running a fingernail along the insulation. If the ring is visible, a dry soft nylon brush removes metal flakes. The honest limit: GM warns "Do not use any type of magnetic tool," many rings are only reachable with the hub off, and a seized sensor that snaps is shop work.

Where this does not apply. Communication or pump codes are Route 5; a hum is Route 2.

At the shop โ€” say this: "ABS light with code [code] for one corner. Before replacing the sensor, inspect and clean the ring and check the harness on that corner, and look for bulletins like GM 17-NA-047. Show me what you found."

The tell. A hum, drone or growl from one corner that rises with road speed and changes when you steer. The ABS light arrives later, or comes and goes.

What it actually is. On most modern cars the sensor ring is part of the hub bearing. BMW's SIB 33 01 26, revised 2 March 2026, shows the link. On X2 models built September 2022 to 3 April 2025 and X1 models built November 2023 to 3 April 2025 it lists either a "humming or clicking type noise in the speed range of 15 โ€“ 65 mph" from the rear axle, or stability warnings with rear sensor codes for a "tooth missing." The cause is water getting "directly into the wheel bearing," and the correction is "Replace both rear axle wheel bearings," under the new vehicle warranty.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Debris that sounds like a bearing. Ford's SSM 47785 for 2015-2019 Transit vans answers a "front wheel bearing type noise" with sensor codes C0031 and C0034 by first cleaning "any debris from the sensor body as well as the back side of the bearing." GM's 17-NA-047 describes a "brief and intermittent noise, click, ratchet, grind" at parking lot speeds: the ABS briefly activating because a dirty ring faked a locking wheel.

Fix it yourself โ€” the steering load test. On a quiet straight road at 35 to 45 mph, weave gently. Louder when steering left usually means the loaded right-hand bearing, and the reverse; tyre noise stays the same. Then lift that corner safely and rock the wheel top to bottom: play is a worn bearing. The honest limit: pressed bearings need a press and often an alignment, and a bearing with play or heat is not a keep-driving problem. Costs by design are in the wheel bearing cost guide.

Where this does not apply. A grind only when braking is brakes; the braking grind guide covers it.

At the shop โ€” say this: "ABS light with a hum from the [side] that rises with speed and changes when I steer. Check that bearing for play before replacing any sensor, and tell me whether the ring is part of the hub."

How do you tell a failing wheel bearing from worn brakes when the ABS light is on? By when the noise happens. A bearing hums or growls whenever the wheel turns, rises and falls with road speed, and changes when you steer, because turning shifts weight onto one side; the brake pedal makes no difference to it. BMW's 2026 bulletin describes exactly that on X1 and X2 models, a hum or click between 15 and 65 mph traced to water inside the bearings. A brake grind appears when you press the pedal and fades when you release it. The ABS pump makes a third sound, a short buzz or clunk after starting, which Toyota calls normal. The tell. Amber ABS and a red BRAKE lamp or message together, sometimes with a longer pedal or, on a hybrid, a string of lamps and "Check VSC."

What it actually is. Under FMVSS 135 the red warning covers lost fluid or pressure and the parking brake, so check those first. Low fluid with the ABS light is a stop. Beyond that the documents describe internal and electronic causes. Toyota's T-SB-0024-19 for 2011-2015 Prius and 2012-2015 Prius Plug-in lists "the brake, ABS, and/or TRAC warning light(s)" with codes including C1391 from "a small internal brake fluid leak inside the brake booster assembly with master cylinder," a 5.2-hour job. T-SB-0079-18 covers the 2010 Prius and T-SB-0041-14 the 2007-2011 Camry Hybrid actuator, all under Toyota's basic warranty of "36 months or 36,000 miles." Ford's SSM 54733 ties "Check Brake System" or the ABS lamp with code C0563 on 2025-2026 Bronco, Expedition, Navigator, F-150 and Ranger to "air still trapped in the system after prior bleeding attempts," and TSB 25-2245 fixes an ABS lamp with a "soft brake pedal following vehicle start-up" on the 2025 F-150 with 0.3 hours of reprogramming.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A sensor misreading pressure. Recall 24V-838 covers 206,502 2018-2019 Grand Cherokee and Durango models whose ABS module "falsely reads pressure in the primary circuit"; afterwards "ABS, ESC, and red 'Brake' warning indicator lights are illuminated at vehicle start up." The fix is free.

Fix it yourself โ€” the fluid and pedal check, nothing more. Engine running, parking brake off, press firmly for ten seconds. Check the reservoir and look for wet patches inside each wheel. Top up only with the fluid on the cap, and only to decide whether to drive to a shop. The honest limit: many ABS systems need a scan tool bleed, and a sinking pedal is a tow. Where this does not apply. A red BRAKE lamp with no ABS light is usually the parking brake or fluid; the brake light guide covers it.

At the shop โ€” say this: "ABS and red BRAKE together. Print the ABS module codes before any parts. On a hybrid, tell me whether C1391 or C1252 is stored. If it was bled recently, check for trapped air and run the scan tool bleed."

The tell. Your car is in the table above, a recall letter arrived, or the ABS light came with a smell or smoke.

What it actually is: the Hyundai and Kia fire recalls. Recall 23V-651 covers 1,649,478 Hyundai vehicles whose ABS modules "could leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short over time," risking "an engine compartment fire while parked or driving." Its listed warnings are smoke, a burning or melting odour and "Illumination of the MIL and/or ABS light." Recall 23V-652 covers 1,730,192 Kia vehicles, and Kia's report says "the exact cause of the electrical short circuit remains unknown." Both remedies are a lower-rated fuse. Later models have their own campaigns: 20V-543 (652,024 2016-2021 Tucson), 22V-056 (357,348 Santa Fe family and 2014-2015 Tucson), 21V-331 (440,370 2013-2015 Optima and 2014-2015 Sorento) and 21V-137 (379,931 2017-2021 Sportage and 2017-2019 Cadenza).

The two brands say different things. Hyundai's report says owners "can continue driving these vehicles" but should park outside, and its letter says an ABS light means "seek service at your Hyundai dealer as soon as possible." Kia's letters say that with the MIL, ABS light, a burning smell or smoke, "pull over to a safe location and turn OFF the engine" and have it towed. On a Kia, follow Kia.

Nissan and Ram. In recall 19V-807 (391,479 Murano, Maxima, Pathfinder and QX60 models) a leaking actuator makes the ABS lamp "continuously illuminate," and ignoring it risks a short that "in rare instances" leads to fire. The letter: lamp on 10 seconds or longer, "Stop driving" and "Park only outdoors." Ram's 24V-896 covers 317,630 2017-2018 Ram 2500 to 5500 trucks whose hydraulic unit causes "intermittent loss of ABS/ESC/Traction control progressing to permanent loss," and 24V-653 covers 1,025,432 2019 and 2021-2024 Ram 1500s whose ABS software can disable stability control.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The old letter in the drawer. Ford's 19V-904 on 2006-2010 Fusion, Milan, Zephyr and MKZ blames "aged DOT 3 brake fluid" and starts its free remedy with a test and a DOT 4 flush; the unit is replaced only if it fails. Dodge's 15V-675 seals a ground eyelet that lets water reach the ABS module on 2012-2015 Journeys.

Where this does not apply. Model year is not eligibility: Kia's 23V-652 and Ford's 19V-904 reports say the cars were not built in VIN order.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Run this VIN for every recall and campaign on the ABS module, HECU, actuator or hydraulic unit, open or completed. If parts are not available, write that down with the maker's advice on driving and parking."

Which ABS lights mean a recall rather than a repair bill? The ones on cars whose VIN sits inside a campaign, and the list is longer than most owners expect. Hyundai's 23V-651 covers 1,649,478 vehicles and Kia's 23V-652 another 1,730,192, both for ABS modules that can short and start a fire, with the ABS or engine light named as a warning. Nissan's 19V-807 covers 391,479 Murano, Maxima, Pathfinder and QX60 models where an ABS light held for 10 seconds or more means stop driving. Ram's 24V-896 covers 317,630 heavy-duty trucks whose hydraulic unit fails in stages. Ford's 19V-904 covers 600,166 Fusion-family sedans and replaces the unit only if it fails a test. The tell. The light never clears, and the scan tool cannot reach the ABS module or shows pump or internal codes.

What it actually is. Sometimes the module. Volkswagen's recall 16V-913 (135,683 2009-2010 VW and Audi models) describes modules failing because of "an incorrect solder compound," lighting "warning lights for ABS, brake and the ESC systems." Kia's SC252 checked 2022 Sorento and Telluride and 2022-2023 K5 hydraulic units for leaks.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Power and ground. GM's preliminary information PIT4056H describes the ABS and red brake lamps with a module the scan tool cannot reach, and warns testing "may lead to replacement of the EBCM; however, the concern may still be present after installing the new EBCM." Its causes include "a shorted WSS or WSS wiring," often on trucks with "aftermarket lift kits." GM's PIT6347A traces ABS and Service Brake System warnings on 2022-2025 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade to "a low voltage condition," and Toyota's T-SB-0172-13 blames brake, ABS and TRAC lamps with pump noise on 2012-2013 Camry on "a poor ground on the left fender side panel bracket after a collision repair."

Rebuild or replace. A mail-in rebuild is roughly $150 to $250 โšช and keeps your programming, but the car waits. A new module is about $1,150 to $1,300 โšช installed and may need setup: Ford's SSM 53176 says a new module on a 2013-2016 Escape keeps the light on with code U2300 until the dealer tool runs its installation routine. A pump or hydraulic unit runs about $1,350 to $1,500 โšช.

Where this does not apply. Recall VINs (Route 4), and lights that clear after a restart (Route 1).

At the shop โ€” say this: "Before quoting a module, show me the battery, power and ground tests, and whether communication returns when each wheel sensor is unplugged, as GM's PIT4056H suggests. Quote a rebuild and a new unit side by side, with programming."

What does it actually cost to fix an ABS light in 2026? Two very different price lists, split by the codes. On the short list: a VIN check at $0, an ABS-capable scanner at about $100 to $150, a shop diagnosis at $80 to $150 independent or up to $300 at a dealer, cleaning a sensor ring or connector as labour only at roughly $50 to $300, a wheel speed sensor at $150 to $300 installed, a hub bearing at $250 to $600 per wheel, and a fluid flush at $120 to $200. On the long list: a rebuilt module by mail at $150 to $250 plus fitting, a new module at $1,150 to $1,300, and a pump or hydraulic unit at $1,350 to $1,500. Hybrid boosters sit above that, with Toyota allowing 5.2 labour hours on a Prius. All are estimates, and recalls make several free. Reading ABS codes: three examples from the documents

Engine readers show P codes. The ABS module stores its own C (chassis) and U (communication) codes, and you need a tool that reads that module. Meanings vary by maker, so here are three the documents define.

C0035 to C0050 on GM. One per corner, left front to right rear, per 17-NA-047: the code names a corner, not a part. Ford's bulletins pair C0031 and C0034 with front wheel speed sensor problems on the 2020 Escape and the Transit.

C1391 on Toyota and Lexus hybrids. Listed with C1252, C1253 and C1256 in T-SB-0024-19, T-SB-0079-18 and T-SB-0041-14 for internal leaks in the booster or actuator. In our sample 57 complaints name it, mostly Prius and Highlander owners.

U0121 on GM, U2300 on Ford. A module other modules cannot reach (PIT4056H), and a new module that has not learned its settings (SSM 53176). Both look like a dead module and often are not.

A 2018 Ram 2500 owner quoted his scanner's description of C0020-01 as "ABS Pump Motor Control - General Electrical Failure" (ODI 11594966); those trucks are in recall 24V-896.

Hearing it: four sounds and what they mean

The self-check buzz or clunk. A short motor sound after starting or pulling away. Toyota's tech tip T-TT-0538-19 quotes the owner's manual: "This sound does not indicate that a malfunction has occurred." GM's PI1402 calls a once-per-drive clunk above 9 mph on 2010-2015 Traverse, Acadia and Enclave the ABS self-test, which "should be considered normal." A pump that keeps running, with lights, is not.

The bearing hum. Continuous, rising with road speed, changing with steering: Route 2.

The ring click or ratchet. Brief, at parking lot speeds, sometimes with a pedal pulse: GM's debris story, Route 1.

The brake grind. Only with the pedal pressed: pads or rotors; see the grinding noise guide.

In our sample 595 ABS light complaints use a sound word, but only 33 pair a bearing or hub with a noise. Our study of noises without a warning light shows how often the sound comes first.

What we counted in the federal complaint file

Our sample: every vehicle complaint added to NHTSA's public files from 1 January 2015 to 8 September 2026, pulled 16 September 2026 and de-duplicated by report number: 777,040 owner reports. We matched "ABS" or "anti-lock brake" followed directly by light, lamp or indicator, with an optional "warning" between: 4,607 complaints, spot-checked by hand.

Few ended at the roadside. 206 said the vehicle was towed, 163 reported a crash and 79 a fire. 1,688 also mention traction or stability control.

Recalls dominate the text. 1,414 use the word recall. The most-cited campaigns are 24V-896 (175), 19V-904 (50), 23V-651 (36), 16V-913 (28) and 23V-652 (26). 404 say a part or remedy was "not available," 136 of them beside 24V-896.

The wheel shows up less than expected. 195 mention a wheel speed or ABS sensor and 129 a bearing or hub. The median stated mileage was 92,071 miles (2,762 owners) and the median model year 2013. Raw counts, not a ranking.

Checking your VIN, and what "remedy not yet available" means

How to check. Enter the 17-character VIN, from the base of the windscreen or the door frame, at nhtsa.gov/recalls, then on the maker's owner site, which also lists non-safety campaigns such as Hyundai's 949 or Kia's SC148.

What an interim letter means. Ram's letter for 24V-896 says: "The remedy for this condition is not currently available." Ram's July 2026 update says final letters to 2500 and 3500 pickup owners start on or about 6 October 2026, so many trucks are still waiting as this is published. Nissan's 19V-807 letter expected parts in summer 2020 and said exactly when to stop driving meanwhile.

While you wait. Follow the letter on driving and parking to the word, sign up for parts alerts and keep receipts; the Hyundai, Kia, Ram and Nissan documents we read describe reimbursement. There are limits: one Ram owner was told "reimbursement could not be provided because the recall remedy was not yet available" (ODI 11660622), and a 2013 Kia Forte owner went through two misdiagnoses before learning "the VIN was included, but the parts were not yet available" (ODI 11557092). The letters also say you may complain to NHTSA if the remedy is not provided "within a reasonable time."

The ABS light before an inspection, and when buying used

Inspection. States set the rules, and the two we checked are explicit. New York's 15 NYCRR 79.21: "An inoperative anti-lock brake system or an illuminated ABS warning light are not causes for rejection." Pennsylvania's 67 Pa. Code 175.80 rejects a lit brake warning "unless the vehicle is equipped with an antilock braking system (ABS) which is designed to revert to standard braking operation and no driveability deficiency or loss of braking performance is present." A red brake warning or poor braking is a different matter. Check your own state's manual.

Buying used. An ABS light is a price conversation, not automatically a walk-away. Have the ABS codes read and the VIN run first: a cleaned ring or sensor is a small deduction, a module, pump or hybrid booster can pass $1,000 โšช, and an open 23V-651 or 23V-652 is free but means parking outside until done.

What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 โ€” the VIN. "What recalls and campaigns show on this VIN, open or completed?"

Checkpoint 2 โ€” the right codes. "Which C and U codes are stored in the ABS module, and which corner do they name?"

Checkpoint 3 โ€” the corner. "Did you inspect the ring, harness and connector there before choosing a sensor?"

Checkpoint 4 โ€” power, ground and pedal. "What did the battery, ground, fluid and pedal checks show?"

Checkpoint 5 โ€” the ceiling. "Sensor, bearing, rebuild or new unit, does it need programming, and will you call before exceeding this figure?" The overcharging guide covers how quotes grow.

Three diagnostic traps that cost owners the most

Trap 1: the sensor bought from the code. The situation: a 2013 Traverse with ABS and StabiliTrak lamps and code C0040. What the shop says: "Right front sensor's bad. Might need the hub too." What is really happening: GM's 17-NA-047 names this model, this code range and debris on the ring. One owner in our sample replaced both front hubs and the lights kept returning (ODI 11337275). Price versus bill: about an hour of cleaning, against $250 to $600 per hub. Your protective question: "Did you inspect and clean the encoder ring on that corner before choosing parts?"

Trap 2: the module that was not the problem. The situation: a lifted 2012 Silverado with ABS and red brake lamps and no communication with the ABS module. What the shop says: "The EBCM is dead. Over a thousand." What is really happening: GM's PIT4056H describes this picture and says the fault "may still be present after installing the new EBCM," often from shorted sensor wiring. Price versus bill: a wiring repair, against $1,150 to $1,300 for a module that changes nothing. Your protective question: "Does communication return when you unplug the wheel sensors one at a time?"

Trap 3: pads on a hybrid that needed a booster. The situation: a 2013 Prius with brake, ABS and TRAC lights. What the shop says: "Pads and a fluid flush." What is really happening: T-SB-0024-19 ties those lights and C1391 to an internal booster leak; pads do not set C1391. Owners in our sample reported dealer quotes of $3,040 on a 2013 Prius V and over $4,300 on a 2013 RX 450h (ODI 11326327, 11316157). Price versus bill: a pad job that fixes nothing, then the booster anyway. Your protective question: "Is C1391 or C1252 stored, and how does this repair address it?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers โ€” typical of the pattern each describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials.

Scenario 1 โ€” the flood that set the light. A 2014 Santa Fe Sport in Florida shows ABS and ESC lamps after a flooded road, and a sensor is quoted at $280. Asked about campaign 949, the dealer confirms the build date and replaces the rear sensor caps free. Lesson: a light that follows water deserves a water question before a parts order.

Scenario 2 โ€” the hum that was the story. A 2016 Equinox at 104,000 miles has an intermittent ABS light and a growl above 40 mph that grows in right-hand bends. One shop quotes a $220 sensor; a second finds play in the left front hub and fits a hub bearing for about $450. Light and noise go together. Lesson: when a noise and a light arrive together, fix the part making the noise.

Scenario 3 โ€” the Kia that should not be driven. A 2012 Optima with the ABS light and a faint burning smell, 23V-652 open. Following Kia's letter, it is towed, parked outside and the fuse fitted free in the one to two hours Kia estimates. Lesson: on a recalled car, the letter's instructions are the diagnosis.

Your situation right now: four playbooks

"Only the ABS light, car drives normally." Drive gently with extra distance, avoid ice if you can, run the VIN tonight, read ABS codes this week.

"ABS plus red BRAKE, or the pedal feels wrong." Low fluid or a soft pedal: tow. Firm pedal and full reservoir: one careful trip to a shop, not a week of commuting.

"Smoke, a burning smell, or a Hyundai, Kia or Nissan recall model." Stop, switch off, get out if there is smoke, park outside away from buildings, and call the roadside number in the recall letter.

"A shop has quoted a module." Ask for codes, power and ground tests, the corner inspection and the VIN history in writing, and price a rebuild beside a new unit. The dispute guide covers a bill already paid.

After the fix: verify, then prevent

Verify with a drive. Many wheel speed faults reset only once the car moves; BMW notes some faults "may only be removed while driving." Drive through turns and stop-and-go, restart, confirm the lamp does its brief bulb check and goes out, then re-read the ABS module for history codes. A lamp that never lights at start is a warning that cannot warn.

Keep the fluid fresh. Ford's 19V-904 is a documented case of old brake fluid damaging an ABS unit; follow the manual's interval. The brake pads cost guide covers what gets done alongside.

Keep the battery healthy. GM's PIT6347A links ABS warnings to low voltage, worse in cold weather.

Record a baseline. Thirty seconds at a steady 40 mph, saved now, makes the next hum a comparison. The recording guide has the method.

What we looked for and did not find. Honda and Acura index several VSA bulletins, but we could not retrieve the documents, so we make no Honda claim. No manufacturer document we found defines a flashing ABS lamp across brands.
