๐Ÿšจ 60-Second Triage โ€” Check the dipstick before you read anything else here. Low oil, or oil far past its interval, is the first thing Ford and Acura tell their own technicians to check for this code, and it is the only cause you can fix in a parking lot. Light steady, engine smooth, oil full and clean: you have time. Do not buy a cam phaser this week. A metallic rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds of a cold start: that is the timing chain question, not the solenoid question โ€” days, not months. Stalling at idle, in reverse or pulling away from a light: 47 of the 107 federal complaints naming P0011 describe exactly that. Light flashing, engine shaking: a live misfire, which outranks P0011 entirely.

๐Ÿ“Š P0011 in the Pulscar Check Engine Code Index โ€” 70 distinct manufacturer bulletins received by NHTSA from 2015 to August 2026 name P0011, from 12 manufacturer groups, led by GM with 25, Ford with 13, Stellantis with 11 and Jaguar Land Rover with 7. At least 26% are software updates, falling to 12% once the Stellantis flash bulletins are set aside โ€” this is a hardware-and-oil code, not a reprogramming code. Zero of the 70 is a warranty extension or emissions campaign. The codes named alongside it most often are P0010 in 15 complaints, P0014 in 15 and P0016 in 13. See the index, method and data โ†’

P0011 is a complaint about a measurement, not a death certificate for a part. The computer told the intake camshaft on bank 1 to sit at a certain angle, watched the cam position sensor to see where it ended up, and decided the cam was further advanced than it had asked for. The official name says so: "A" Camshaft Position โ€” Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1).

What opens that gap is almost never the expensive thing. A cam phaser is a hydraulic device: engine oil flows through a narrow control valve into chambers inside the sprocket and pushes the camshaft around. Oil that is low, thick, dirty or the wrong grade cannot do that job, and the computer sees a cam that will not go where it is told. Which is why Ford's instruction for the 2019-2020 F-150 5.0L begins "verify the engine oil is at the proper level" before a solenoid is touched, and Acura's bulletin for the 2024 Integra Type S names the cause as "the lack of oil control by the PCM" and opens its corrective action with "Check oil level."

By the end of this guide you will know which of five routes your P0011 belongs to, what proves it, and what each one costs โ€” from a $35 oil change to a $4,000 timing chain job. Claims marked ๐ŸŸข rest on a document in Sources, opened and read; โšช marks estimates and owner reports.

How to use this guide

Every route is defined by what you can check and what the data shows, not by the code.

One rule overrides everything: prove the oil is right before you diagnose anything that runs on oil. Level, grade and age, in that order. It costs an hour and a flashlight, and two manufacturers put it in writing ahead of a parts list.

First: what P0011 actually says, and what it does not

Three splits remove most of the confusion before any money moves.

P0011 or P0021? A bank is a row of cylinders. A four-cylinder engine has one row and can only set P0011. A V6 or V8 has two, each with its own intake camshaft and phaser: P0011 is bank 1, P0021 is bank 2. Both together usually means something shared โ€” oil, software or a pump โ€” rather than two parts failing on the same morning.

P0011 or P0014? P0011 is the "A" camshaft, which on almost every modern engine is the intake; P0014 is the "B" camshaft, the exhaust side. Kia's bulletin lists them together: P0011 as "A (Intake) Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)" and P0014 as the same complaint about the exhaust cam. In the Code Index, P0014 appears alongside P0011 in 15 complaints and P0010 in another 15.

Over-advanced, or a correlation failure? P0011 says the cam went too far in the direction the system moves it. P0016 says the crankshaft and camshaft no longer line up at all โ€” a different and generally more expensive statement. When they appear together, the chain moves up the list.

The 10-minute driveway protocol

  1. Read every stored code and save the freeze frame before anyone clears them. P0010, P0014, P0016 or P0021 alongside it change the diagnosis.
  2. Pull the dipstick on level ground, engine off, ten minutes after shutdown. Low is the cheapest possible answer. Write down the level and the color.
  3. Check the oil grade on the filler cap against the owner's manual. A 0W-20 engine filled with 5W-30 has thicker oil than the phaser was designed for.
  4. Find the date and mileage of the last oil change. An interval blown by thousands of miles is a documented cause, not an excuse.
  5. Start the car cold and listen at the front of the engine for ten seconds. A metallic rattle that fades as oil pressure builds is the timing chain question. Record 30 seconds.
  6. Watch the idle for a minute, then reverse out of a parking space. Stalling at idle or in reverse is the most common context in our complaint set.
  7. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and the manufacturer's owner site. For this code the honest expectation is nothing, but the warranty check costs one call.

Ten minutes, a cheap reader and a phone, and you have done most of what a $80 to $200 diagnostic fee buys. What a diagnostic should cost covers the rest.

"The light came on and the dipstick is low." โ†’ Route 1. Nothing else can be judged until the oil is right.

"Oil change is 4,000 miles overdue and the code appeared." โ†’ Route 1, and the timing is not a coincidence.

"Shop quoted a phaser or a chain straight off the code." โ†’ Route 4 or 5, but not yet. Ask what was tested.

"P0011 with P0010 stored too." โ†’ Route 2. P0010 is the solenoid's own electrical circuit code.

"It stalls at idle and when I reverse." โ†’ Route 2 first, then Route 1. The most common story in our data.

"The code came back right after an engine or camshaft repair." โ†’ Route 3, and several manufacturers publish bulletins for exactly this.

"Rattle at the front of the engine on a cold start." โ†’ Route 5. The ticking guide sorts the front-of-engine noises.

"It cleared itself and came back a week later." โ†’ Route 2 or 3. Intermittent sticking and intermittent signals both do that.

What actually determines your number

Whether the oil is right. Every other diagnosis is unreliable until it is. A phaser judged on low or degraded oil is being condemned for doing exactly what it was designed to do with the oil it was given.

How the engine varies its timing. A solenoid feeding a hydraulic phaser is a bolt-on part. An electric variable valve timing motor, as on Mazda's newest inline six, is a different part at a different price.

Whether the cam has to come out. A solenoid usually lives in the front cover or the head and comes out with two bolts. A phaser sits behind the timing cover: the same teardown as a chain.

What else is stored. P0010 points at the solenoid circuit, P0016 or P0017 pulls the chain forward, and a misfire code outranks both.

Whether the car has just been apart. Codes that appear right after an engine or camshaft job have their own documented causes, and none of them is a worn part.

Your powertrain warranty. There is no special coverage for this code, but 21 of the 60 complaints that state a mileage sit at or under 60,000 miles.

Two rows break the pattern. On the Ford VCT family, the manufacturer's own answer to a stuck solenoid is to try unsticking it โ€” ten electrical cycles through a pinpoint test โ€” before a part is ordered. On the Mazda inline six, the bulletin exists mainly to stop technicians replacing the wrong component.

Which route is yours? Five questions

1. Is the oil low, dark, overdue or the wrong grade? โ†’ Route 1. Fix it and re-test first.

2. Is P0010 stored with it, or does the engine stall at idle and in reverse? โ†’ Route 2. The solenoid.

3. Did the code appear right after a repair, or does it come and go with no symptom? โ†’ Route 3. Signals, connectors and software.

4. Oil proven right, solenoid tested, and the code still sets under load? โ†’ Route 4. The phaser itself.

The tell. The dipstick sits below the low mark, the oil is black and past its interval, or the grade on the filler cap does not match what went in. Often the code appeared within a few thousand miles of a missed service.

What it actually is. The phaser is moved by oil pressure through a narrow control valve. Ford's SSM 49583, for 2019-2020 F-150 trucks with the 5.0L, is explicit about the order: "verify the engine oil is at the proper level. Adjust the engine oil level as necessary. If the condition persists, replace only the VCT solenoid(s) associated with the DTCs present." ๐ŸŸข The previous version of the same bulletin, SSM 48894 from July 2020, has word-for-word the same text without the oil-level step; Ford added it in the 2021 revision. Acura's 24-026 goes further and names the cause as "The lack of oil control by the PCM causes the VTC to overshoot its target," with "Check oil level" first of four corrective actions. ๐ŸŸข

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Viscosity. GM's safety recall 25V-274, covering 597,571 trucks and SUVs with the 6.2L V8, sends every engine that passes its inspection away with "a higher viscosity oil, which will also require a new oil fill cap, an oil filter replacement, and an owner's manual insert" โ€” the dealer bulletin names it as dexos R 0W-40. ๐ŸŸข A manufacturer changing the oil specification of a running engine as a federal recall remedy. Grade is not a detail.

Fix it yourself โ€” get the oil right, then re-test properly. Level ground, engine off ten minutes, dipstick wiped and re-inserted fully. If it is low, add the grade printed on the filler cap a quarter of a quart at a time and re-check. If the oil is black, overdue or the wrong grade, change oil and filter to the specified grade, then clear the code and drive a full warm-up and cool-down cycle before deciding anything. The honest limit: if the level was low and you do not know why, you have a second problem โ€” the oil leak guide and the oil change guide cover consumption and intervals.

Where this does not apply. If the oil was full, fresh and the right grade when the code set, Route 1 is answered. Do not pay for a second oil change as a diagnosis.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Before any parts, record the oil level, the grade in the sump and the date of the last change on the repair order, and measure actual oil pressure at operating temperature. I want those three numbers written down whatever you find."

The tell. P0010 stored alongside P0011, a rough or hunting idle, a stall when the engine drops to idle โ€” pulling up to a light, reversing out of a space. This is the most common story in our set: 47 of 107 narratives mention a stall, a shutdown or a loss of motive power.

What it actually is. The oil control valve is a small spool in a sleeve, moved by an electromagnet and washed in engine oil. Debris or varnish stops it moving fully, so the phaser sees the wrong oil pressure and parks in the wrong place. Ford's bulletin family โ€” SSM 46450 in 2017, then 47170, 48423, 49821 and 50067, widening each time until it covered 2015-2021 Ford and Lincoln vehicles across a dozen codes โ€” gives one cause throughout: "small debris causing the VCT solenoid to stick." ๐ŸŸข GM says the same of its 2019 Silverado and Sierra trucks in PIP5600 ("A sticking oil control solenoid for the cam actuator") and of the 2025 Encore GX and Trailblazer in PIP6082, published 26 August 2025: "potential debris in the cam actuators." ๐ŸŸข

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Unsticking it. Ford's pinpoint test HK11 tells the technician to "cycle the affected VCT solenoid 10 times to attempt to clear the debris" before attempting any component diagnosis or replacement. ๐ŸŸข GM's PIP5130G, for 2014-2016 V8 trucks with an intermittent crank-no-start and P0011, has the dealer energize the solenoid with the scan tool for the same reason. A tool that can command outputs turns a $250 part into a five-minute test.

Fix it yourself โ€” only where the part is accessible. On many four-cylinder engines the intake oil control valve is held by a single bolt at the front of the head and comes out, gets its screen inspected and cleaned, and goes back with a new O-ring in under an hour. Photograph the screen first: a screen full of varnish is a statement about the oil, not the valve. The honest limit: on V-configuration engines the same part can sit under the intake manifold, and on GM's newer trucks the fix involves a specific bolt rather than the valve alone.

Where this does not apply. If the solenoid has already been replaced and the code returned, stop replacing it. Our complaint file contains owners who bought two and three of them.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Has the solenoid been commanded with a scan tool and watched, or was it replaced on the code? If it is being replaced, I want the old one kept for me and the oil changed in the same visit."

P0011 and a noise at the front of the engine? Check free whether it sounds like a chain or a tick โ†’

How do you tell a solenoid problem from a stretched timing chain without opening the engine? Mostly by when the noise happens and whether there is one. A stuck oil control valve is usually silent: the complaint is a rough idle, a stall pulling away from a light, and a code that clears and returns. A chain that has lost tension announces itself in the first few seconds of a cold start, as a metallic rattle from the front of the engine that fades once oil pressure builds โ€” and the fading is the diagnosis, not the reassurance. Film 30 seconds of the engine running, parked, on a genuinely cold start, and Pulscar's free check returns a likely cause, a severity and a repair-cost estimate, or "inconclusive" โ€” it does not decide whether the car is safe to drive. The tell. The code appeared right after an engine, camshaft, head or wiring repair. Or it is intermittent, with no drivability symptom at all, on an engine with clean oil at the right level.

What it actually is. Every part of the measurement can be wrong without the phaser being wrong. Kia's PS731, covering Souls from 2010 to the present, is the clearest example: P0011, P0014, P0016 or P0017 can set after an engine replacement because the camshaft reluctor wheel โ€” "also called pulse wheel" โ€” was not correctly clocked at top dead center, "sending an erroneous signal to the PCM." ๐ŸŸข GM's PIP5115 covers 2010-2014 Escalade, Yukon Denali and Camaro models with P0011 after the camshaft was replaced, and its whole instruction is to check the part number on the camshaft that went in. ๐ŸŸข

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The connector. GM's PIP5855, for 2021-2022 Silverado, Sierra and CT4 models with the 2.7L L3B, names a failed camshaft position actuator magnet as the cause of P0011, P0014, P0016 and P0017 โ€” and then puts the wiring first: "check for and correct any related wiring, terminal tension, crimp, or lock issues as needed. If no issues are isolated during the harness inspections, replace the Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet." ๐ŸŸข

Fix it yourself โ€” get the numbers before you agree to a part. Many inexpensive readers show live data. Watch commanded camshaft position against actual position at idle and at a steady 2,000 rpm on a warm engine: the pair should track closely, and a gap that opens only under load is a different story from one that is always there. The honest limit: a reader cannot install a calibration, run Acura's IN-VTC learn, or verify a reluctor wheel at top dead center.

Where this does not apply. If the engine has never been apart, the reluctor and part-number causes are off the table and you are back to oil and the solenoid.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Has anything been off this engine recently? Before any parts, check for a calibration update for P0011 on this VIN, then show me commanded versus actual cam position at idle and at 2,000 rpm."

Route 4 ยท The phaser or actuator itself has failed

The tell. Oil proven good, solenoid tested or replaced, and the data still shows the cam sitting where it was not commanded. Often a rattle from near the valve covers under load rather than at cold start.

What it actually is. The phaser is a mechanism inside the camshaft sprocket with vanes, chambers and a locking pin. When its internals wear or a part breaks loose, it cannot hold the commanded angle. Ford names the noise directly in SSM 48894 and SSM 49583: the truck "may also exhibit noise near the front of the valve covers from the intake variable camshaft timing (VCT) phasers." ๐ŸŸข Land Rover's LTB00916NAS5, for Halewood-built LR2, Discovery Sport and Evoque models, blames "the 'stopper' in the intake camshaft Variable Cam Timing (VCT) actuator becoming detached." ๐ŸŸข On the newest engines the mechanism is not hydraulic at all: Mazda's SA-033/25 replaces an "intake EVVT motor" and its O-ring.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Replacing the right component. Mazda's bulletin carries an instruction in capitals for a reason: "DO NOT replace the cam actuator #9." ๐ŸŸข On the electric system the motor and the actuator are different parts at different prices, and the wrong one is a full teardown wasted.

Where this does not apply. A phaser that rattles at cold start and quiets with oil pressure is behaving like a chain-tension problem. And if the oil has never been verified, this route is premature.

At the shop โ€” say this: "If you are quoting a phaser, tell me what proved it: what the live cam position data showed, what happened when the solenoid was commanded, and what the oil pressure measured. And while the front of the engine is open, what does the chain and guide wear look like?"

Which P0011 repairs should a shop prove before it charges you? Four, and each has a document behind it. Oil level and grade, because Ford's instruction for the 2019-2020 F-150 5.0L begins by verifying the oil level and Acura's Integra bulletin opens with "Check oil level." Measured oil pressure at operating temperature, because GM's preliminary information for its 2007-2013 trucks sends the technician to the oil pressure sender when the published diagnosis finds nothing. A commanded solenoid test, because Ford's pinpoint test cycles the valve ten times to shift debris before anyone orders a part. And a bulletin search, because a quarter of the manufacturer documents naming this code are software. Ask for all four in writing before a phaser or a chain is quoted. The tell. A metallic rattle from the front of the engine for the first few seconds of a cold start, fading as oil pressure builds. Long cranking. P0016 or P0017 stored with P0011. In our file, 16 of 107 complaints name a chain, guide or tensioner.

What it actually is. A chain stretches as its pins and rollers wear, and a worn hydraulic tensioner cannot take up the slack until oil pressure builds โ€” which is why the noise is a cold-start noise. Once the chain has slack, the camshaft lags or leads the crankshaft and the timing codes follow. GM's PIP4716F ties the two together: a "short, sharp rattle noise from the front of the engine at start up" with "Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0011 P0014 P0016 or P0017." ๐ŸŸข What a failed chain can do is on the federal record. NHTSA's engineering analysis EA06-009, into timing chain failure on 2001 Saturn L-Series cars, found that "NONE OF THE VEHICLES THAT EXPERIENCING STALLS DUE TO TIMING CHAIN FAILURE COULD BE RESTARTED," that roughly a third of those stalls happened above 40 mph and about 20 percent of owners "WERE NOT ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE OUT OF TRAFFIC AFTER THE ENGINE DIED." ๐ŸŸข

GM's 12-06-01-009F, covering stretched chains on the 3.6L V6 across twenty nameplates, is unusually blunt about over-replacement: "Idler gears, camshaft actuators, crankshaft driven gears and timing chain guides are being replaced unnecessarily and are not worn and should not be replaced." Guides come out only "in cases where the guide wear block surface is worn down into the base friction material." ๐ŸŸข That is the manufacturer telling its own dealers to take parts off the estimate.

Where this does not apply. A chain does not stretch overnight on a 30,000-mile engine with a full sump. If the odometer is low and the oil is right, look again at Routes 2 and 3.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Before a chain quote, I want the cold-start noise recorded, the cam-to-crank offset read on a scan tool, and a line-by-line estimate. GM's own bulletin says guides and idler gears should not be replaced unless the guide wear block is worn into the friction material โ€” please price it that way."

What we counted in the federal complaint file

Our sample: every vehicle complaint added to NHTSA's public complaint files between 1 January 2015 and 8 September 2026, pulled 14 September 2026 and de-duplicated by report number: 777,040 unique owner reports. We matched the code case-insensitively โ€” NHTSA narratives are stored in capitals through 2020 and mixed case after, and a capitals-only search silently drops the newer half of the file.

107 complaints contain the whole word "P0011". Five more rows held the five characters inside a longer string โ€” "P001100", "P001177", "p00114" โ€” and were read and excluded, which keeps this set identical to the one behind the Check Engine Code Index.

This is a small set and we report it as one. A hundred and seven complaints across a decade, for a code almost every modern gasoline engine can set, means one thing above all: the cheap version of this repair almost never reaches a federal complaint form. What reaches this file is the expensive tail, and every percentage below describes that tail rather than the code.

The safety profile, and why it is the trap

Read the top and the bottom of that table together, because they disagree usefully. On every structured field this is the mildest code we have published, and two of the five are literally zero. But 43.9 percent of the narratives describe the engine stopping, and 17.8 percent put it on a road where stopping is a problem. Two caveats. Zero crashes in 107 reports is consistent with a low rate, not a rate of zero; the file is too small to tell the difference. And the structured towed field says 1.87 percent while the word "tow" appears in 14.0 percent of narratives โ€” the instruments disagree by a factor of seven, and we publish both rather than averaging them into a number neither supports.

What owners name, and what that does and does not prove

Each category is a case-insensitive pattern over the narrative. A complaint can fall into several, so the column does not add to 107. These measure what owners wrote down, not what a wrench found.

Three things are worth saying before anyone quotes that table.

The solenoid leads, and we checked the count by hand. The narrow pattern returned 19 matches and we read all nineteen in full, not a sample. All nineteen are genuinely about a variable valve timing solenoid or oil control valve; in two the owner is listing possible causes found online rather than reporting a diagnosis, and we left those in and said so. Widening the pattern to catch the bare abbreviations VVT, CVVT and VTC added six more, also read: four name the part, one names "VVT issues" caused by oil sludge, one describes the VVT system in general. That is why the label is VVT hardware or system, not "the solenoid", and why the number is 24.

Oil is everywhere, in three different senses. Thirty of the 46 narratives containing the bare word "oil" were drawn at random and read in context. None was a false match โ€” but the meaning varied so much that one 43 percent figure would have been misleading. Owners write about the oil level, the oil pressure, the oil service history and the oil control valve, which is a part name. Split out, the three real oil senses are 21.5, 18.7 and 8.4 percent, and 36 complaints of 107 mention at least one.

Does a P0011 complaint in the federal file tell you what actually broke? Not on its own, and the shape of our data explains why. We counted 107 owner reports naming the code between January 2015 and September 2026, and in them the variable valve timing hardware is named 24 times, engine oil in some form 36 times, and a timing chain 16 times. Those are the words owners wrote, not the parts a technician found, and the file is filled by people whose problem was expensive or unresolved. A car fixed by a quart of oil and a $180 solenoid almost never produces a federal complaint. Read the table as a map of the expensive tail rather than as a frequency ranking, and treat every count in it as a floor. Pulscar publishes the underlying rows so anyone can check a specific call against the narrative it came from.

The engine-replacement number is small and its only job is a comparison. Ten of 107 complaints mention an engine being replaced, rebuilt or quoted, and only three say it was done at the time of writing. Ten is too few to support a rate. Its value is that the identical pattern run against the 162 complaints naming P0016 returns 37 โ€” 22.8 percent against 9.3 percent, same query, same window, same exclusions. The correlation code ends in an engine two and a half times as often, which is the clearest reason to know which of the two you have.

Where those 107 reports sit on the odometer

Sixty of the 107 reports state a usable mileage, keeping readings strictly between 0 and 400,000.

The practical line is 60,000. Thirty-five percent of the reports that state an odometer sit inside a typical 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and a camshaft actuator and its solenoid are powertrain parts. That costs one phone call to test. The sibling code sits further down the road: the P0016 set has a median of 87,730 miles and only 8 of 72 readings under 60,000. An over-advanced cam is a mid-life complaint; a correlation failure is a late-life one.

Do not read that as a failure trend: it measures attention, and the complaint file itself has grown across the decade. By model year, 2011 through 2018 account for 77 of the 107 reports, with 2014 and 2016 tied at 14 apiece. The rest spread thinly, which is the honest picture of a code almost every modern gasoline engine can set.

The document that does not exist for P0011

Most of our code guides end a route with a recall number. This one does not, and saying so plainly is more useful than implying otherwise.

We searched every recall campaign in NHTSA's file for the string "P0011" in the defect description, the remedy text or the notes. The result is zero campaigns. The Check Engine Code Index, counting from the manufacturer communications file instead, independently reports zero warranty extensions or emissions campaigns among the 70 bulletins that name the code. The same recall query for "timing chain" in a defect description returns two campaigns in the whole file, neither on a US passenger car โ€” a Ducati motorcycle and a Mitsubishi Fuso truck.

So there is no free-repair document to look up for this code. What exists instead is worth knowing.

Your powertrain warranty. Commonly 5 years or 60,000 miles, sometimes 10 years or 100,000 on a first owner. The camshaft actuator, its solenoid and the timing chain are all powertrain parts, and 35 percent of our mileage readings sit inside that window.

Your emissions warranty. Federal law requires a minimum of 2 years or 24,000 miles on most emissions-related parts and 8 years or 80,000 miles on the powertrain control module. A P0011 is an emissions fault by definition, because it lights the malfunction indicator lamp.

A campaign you are on for something else. Kia's PS731, GM's PIP5600 and GM's 25V-274 oil remedy all reach owners who arrived for a different reason. Running the VIN is free whatever the answer.

The bulletins themselves. A bulletin is not a promise to pay, but walking in holding a document number changes the conversation, and every number here is public.

What the oil actually does inside a cam phaser

This section exists because the rest of the page rests on it, and most explanations skip it.

Advancing a camshaft โ€” turning it a few degrees ahead of where the crankshaft would otherwise put it โ€” opens the intake valves earlier, which helps low-speed torque. Retarding it helps high-speed breathing and emissions. A variable valve timing system lets the computer choose, dozens of times a minute.

On a hydraulic system the mechanism is a rotor inside the camshaft sprocket, with vanes sitting in oil-filled chambers. Feed pressurized oil into the chambers on one side of the vanes and the rotor turns relative to the sprocket, taking the camshaft with it. The oil is metered by an oil control valve, a small spool moved by an electromagnet.

Everything in that chain is engine oil, which gives four ways to set P0011 without a single worn mechanical part.

Not enough oil. Below the low mark the pump can draw air, and pressure falls away at the phaser first because it sits at the far end of the gallery.

The wrong viscosity. The passages and the spool clearance were sized around one grade. That is why GM's answer for engines passing the 25V-274 inspection is a heavier oil and a new fill cap, and why an engine specified for 0W-20 does not simply tolerate 5W-30 because the bottle says synthetic.

Oil that has degraded. Varnish and sludge narrow the passages and stick the spool. Ford's bulletin family calls it "small debris."

Low pressure for a mechanical reason. GM's PIP-5258, for 2007-2013 trucks and SUVs, tells the technician that when the published P0011 diagnosis finds nothing, "THE OIL PRESSURE AT THE OIL PRESSURE SENDER SHOULD BE CHECKED. ALSO THE NUMBER 2 CAM BEARING SHOULD BE INSPECTED." ๐ŸŸข A worn bearing bleeds pressure away before it reaches the phaser: an oil problem with a hard-parts cause.

On the newest engines the hydraulics are gone. Mazda's H3T inline six moves the intake camshaft with an electric motor, which is why its bulletin replaces a motor rather than a valve.

P0011 and its neighbors: P0010, P0014, P0016, P0021

The codes that appear beside P0011 are the fastest free narrowing available, and the Code Index counts which ones actually do.

P0010 is the "A" camshaft actuator circuit on bank 1 โ€” the electrical health of the solenoid rather than the result. Named in 15 complaints alongside P0011, it is a strong push toward Route 2.

P0014 is the same over-advanced complaint about the exhaust camshaft on bank 1, also named in 15. Both cams over-advanced on one bank is an oil or pressure story far more often than two failed phasers.

P0016 is the correlation code, named in 13. It says the crank and cam no longer agree at all, and it is the one that pulls the timing chain forward; the P0016 guide covers it in the same detail.

P0021 is P0011 on bank 2. Both banks at once means something shared: oil, pressure or software.

P0300 or a cylinder-specific misfire outranks all of them โ€” the flashing light guide is the page to read first.

How to pull your own car's federal record in 10 minutes

Everything above came out of files anyone can open. Here is the same path for one car, in the order that answers the money question fastest.

1. Run the VIN for recalls. NHTSA's VIN lookup returns open, unrepaired safety and emission recalls for that exact vehicle. It does not show completed ones, and it does not show special coverages or customer-satisfaction campaigns, which is why step 2 is not optional.

2. Ask the brand's owner site, then a dealer. The manufacturer portal usually lists campaigns the federal lookup does not, and a service adviser reads the full campaign history off the VIN in two minutes. Ask in that phrasing: "every campaign on this VIN, open or closed, including special coverages and customer satisfaction programs โ€” and confirm the powertrain warranty end date."

3. Read the bulletins for your year, make and model. NHTSA republishes every manufacturer communication it receives: the field layout describes the columns, and the PDFs sit under static.nhtsa.gov with the document numbers used in Sources below. Our Check Engine Code Index does this across the seventeen most common codes.

4. Read other owners' complaints on the same car. NHTSA's public API answers a plain query with a make, model and model year, and the complaint field layout explains every column. One caution from our own use of it: the recall endpoint has returned a campaign against model years the campaign's own Part 573 report does not list, so confirm any year range against the PDF.

5. Write down your service history before the appointment. Date, mileage and oil grade for the last three changes. For this code that sheet of paper is evidence, and a warranty claim will ask for it first.

6. File your own complaint if the answer is no. Every number on this page exists because owners did, and NHTSA screens those reports when deciding whether a pattern deserves an investigation.

What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 โ€” the oil question. "What was the oil level, the grade in the sump, and the measured oil pressure at operating temperature?" Three numbers, written down.

Checkpoint 2 โ€” the full code list. "Which codes are stored, pending and in history, and what does the freeze frame say?" P0010, P0014, P0016 and P0021 each change the job.

Checkpoint 3 โ€” the command test. "Was the solenoid commanded with a scan tool and watched, or replaced on the code?" A working scan tool turns a part into a test.

Checkpoint 4 โ€” the bulletin search. "Is there a bulletin or calibration for P0011 on this VIN?" Twenty-six percent of the bulletins in the index are software.

Checkpoint 5 โ€” the fee and the warranty. "What is the diagnostic charge, when does the powertrain warranty end on this VIN, and will you call me before anything over this figure?"

Three diagnostic traps that cost owners the most

Trap 1: the phaser quoted from the code. The situation: a lone P0011, a smooth engine, 78,000 miles, oil never checked. What the shop says: "P0011 is the cam phaser. It is behind the timing cover, so we are into the front of the engine." What is really happening: nobody has measured oil pressure, commanded the solenoid or looked for a calibration. Ford checks the oil level first in writing; Acura blames oil control by the PCM. Price versus bill: $35 to $400 for oil, a solenoid or software, against $1,500 to $4,000 once the engine is open. Your protective question: "What did the oil pressure test, the solenoid command test and the bulletin search show before you chose the phaser?"

Trap 2: the third solenoid. The situation: the oil control valve has been replaced twice and P0011 keeps returning within weeks. What the shop says: "It must be another bad solenoid. They are known for it." What is really happening: a solenoid that keeps failing is usually one that keeps being contaminated, or a circuit fault, or a pressure problem upstream. GM's sequence for the related codes puts wiring, terminal tension and crimps ahead of the part. Price versus bill: one oil change and a pressure test against a third $250 part and a fourth visit. Your protective question: "Before we buy another one, can we measure oil pressure at temperature and inspect the connector and its terminal tension?"

Trap 3: the whole front of the engine. The situation: the chain genuinely is worn, and the estimate lists a chain kit, both idler sprockets, both camshaft actuators, the crankshaft driven gear and all the guides. What the shop says: "While we are in there, everything goes." What is really happening: GM's own bulletin for these engines says the opposite in plain words: "Idler gears, camshaft actuators, crankshaft driven gears and timing chain guides are being replaced unnecessarily and are not worn and should not be replaced," with guides replaced only where the wear block is worn into the friction material. Price versus bill: several hundred dollars of parts that the manufacturer says to clean and reuse. Your protective question: "Which of these parts is being replaced because it was inspected and found worn, and which because it is in the kit?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers โ€” the mileages and outcomes are typical of the pattern each describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials.

Scenario 1 โ€” the quart that closed the case. A 2016 crossover at 71,000 miles, P0011 alone, a slightly rough idle. The dipstick reads below the low mark and the oil is visibly dark. An oil and filter change at the specified grade costs $85; the code is cleared, the car driven through a full warm-up and cool-down, and P0011 does not return. The owner also now knows the engine used a quart in 4,000 miles. Lesson: the cheapest possible diagnosis is the one two manufacturers put first.

Scenario 2 โ€” the solenoid that was tested, not guessed. A 2019 full-size truck at 44,000 miles with P0011 and P0010, stalling in reverse. The shop commands the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve with its scan tool and watches the cam position fail to follow. The valve is replaced with an oil and filter change in the same visit, about $330, and comes back in a bag with varnish on its screen. Inside powertrain warranty, the owner pays nothing. Lesson: a part that failed a test is a diagnosis; a part that matched a code is a guess.

Scenario 3 โ€” the rattle that was the real story. A 2012 V6 crossover at 132,000 miles, P0011 and P0016 together, a short metallic rattle on cold starts. The first estimate lists a chain kit, both actuators, idler sprockets and all the guides at $3,900. The owner asks which parts were inspected and found worn, quoting the manufacturer's own bulletin. The revised estimate keeps the chain kit and one guide, landing near $2,700 โ€” still a large bill, still the right repair. Lesson: the question that saves money here is not "how much" but "which of these was inspected".

Should you buy a used car with a P0011 in its history?

This is the adjacent question people actually ask, usually with a test-drive scheduled for Saturday, and the answer is not a simple yes or no.

A P0011 that was diagnosed and fixed with an oil service or a solenoid is not a reason to walk away. The parts are ordinary, and an invoice naming the part is better evidence of care than a car with no history at all.

A P0011 with no paperwork is a different object. A stored or pending code tells you the seller either does not know or is not saying. Plug in a reader yourself before money moves; the cars where it matters most are exactly the ones where nobody offers.

Three things to check on any car whose history mentions this code. The oil: pull the dipstick cold, look at level and color, and ask for the last three service records with the grade used. The cold start: those first ten seconds are the only free timing chain inspection that exists, so hear the car started from genuinely cold rather than warmed up in advance. The codes: current, pending and history, because a cleared code is not an absent fault.

Where we would genuinely hesitate. P0011 and P0016 stored together, past 100,000 miles, with a cold-start rattle and no service history. That combination is asking you to buy a $1,500 to $4,000 timing chain job with someone else's name on the receipt, and our mileage data says the correlation code arrives late in a car's life.

Where we would not hesitate. A car inside its powertrain warranty with a dealer invoice showing a solenoid replaced and no recurrence since โ€” a documented repair by the manufacturer's own people. The mileage-by-model guides show how much rarer that paperwork is than it should be.

If a quote is already on the table

Ask for three things in writing before you approve anything: the measured oil pressure at operating temperature, the result of a commanded solenoid test, and the bulletin search for this VIN. A shop that has all three has diagnosed the car; a shop that has none has read a code. After the fix: verify, then prevent

Verify the monitor, not just the light. Drive a week, then check with your own reader that P0011 has not returned as pending and the readiness monitors have run.

Fix the reason the oil was wrong. If the level was low, find out where it went. If the interval was long, shorten it. A phaser starved once will be starved again by the same habit.

Keep the invoice specific. It should name the part, the test that condemned it and the oil grade that went in โ€” that page is what a warranty claim or a future buyer reads.

Record a healthy baseline. Thirty seconds of a cold start, from the same spot every time, turns the next unfamiliar noise into a comparison instead of an argument. The recording guide has the method.

Your action plan: 10 minutes, today, this week

  3. Check the grade on the filler cap against the owner's manual, and find the date of the last oil change.

  2. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup, and ask a dealer for the powertrain warranty end date.
  3. Run a free sound check before anyone quotes a phaser or a chain.

  1. If the oil was low, dirty or the wrong grade, correct it and re-test through a full drive cycle.
  2. If the code returns, book a diagnosis that includes measured oil pressure and a commanded solenoid test.
  3. Only then price a phaser or a chain โ€” line by line, with the inspection result beside each part.

What we looked for and did not find. No recall campaign in NHTSA's file names P0011, and no warranty extension or emissions campaign appears among the 70 bulletins that do. We looked for a manufacturer statement giving a mileage at which a cam phaser should be expected to fail and found none, so this page gives no lifespan figure.
