Slow down, leave the highway, no towing, and get it to a shop today or park it. Light steady, slight stumble: book a diagnosis this week, and do not clear the code first. Coolant level dropping, white smoke or a sweet smell with P0300: stop driving and stop topping it up; that is Route 3. A new knock or loud tick with P0300: shut it off; Route 5. 2016-2026 Honda Civic, 2017-2026 CR-V or 2018-2026 Accord: run the VIN before paying anyone, because Honda extended head gasket cover on 26 August 2026.
P0300 is the one misfire code that refuses to name a cylinder, and that refusal is the most useful thing it tells you. A misfire stuck on cylinder 3 is usually cylinder 3's problem. A misfire the computer cannot pin down is usually a problem every cylinder shares.
That changes what you buy. The usual first move is plugs and coils, and sometimes that is right. But the manufacturer documents behind P0300 also name software, frozen exhaust, valve carbon, coolant in the cylinders and collapsed lifters. No coil fixes those.

How to use this guide
Every route is defined by when the misfire happens, what else is disappearing from the engine, and what you can hear, not by the code itself.
One rule overrides everything: a random misfire is a shared-cause question until a test says otherwise. Volkswagen wrote the extreme version into its Atlas bulletin: "DO NOT diagnose or replace any components for the above fault(s) before performing the update."
First: which misfire code do you actually have?
Write down every code stored with it, including pending and history codes. The combination tells you more than P0300 alone.
How the computer knows. GM's PIP5498M explains that the engine computer "monitors the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor to calculate crankshaft rotation speed." A cylinder that does not fire lets the crank slow for an instant, and the computer counts it. That is why software can be the fix: Volkswagen's bulletin changed "misfire detection thresholds," and Subaru's 07-112-16R traced P0300 on 2014-2016 Forester 2.5L cars to "fluctuation of the alternator's current output."
Why a flashing light means stop: the converter is next
A cylinder that does not burn its fuel sends it down the exhaust, and the catalytic converter burns it instead. A steady light says the computer has seen enough misfires to log a fault. A flashing light is its warning that the rate is now high enough to damage the converter.
Stellantis put the chain into one bulletin. Its 09-016-24 for 2023 Challengers with the 6.2L supercharged engine lists P0300 through P0308 alongside P0420 and P0430, blames "incorrect spark plug gap," and includes a labour line for replacing both catalytic converters. Kia's recall 19V-120 on 2012-2016 Soul 1.6 GDI cars shows the worst version, where an overheated converter damaged pistons. The 10-minute driveway protocol
- Read every code and the freeze frame before anyone clears them. A $20 to $40 reader gives you stored, pending and history codes plus the engine temperature and load when the misfire set. Clearing throws that away.
- Note whether the light is steady or flashing at idle. Flashing: stop here, drive gently to a shop or park it.
- Check the coolant level with the engine cold and mark it with tape. A level that falls over a few cold mornings with no puddle is the Route 3 question.
- Start the engine cold and listen at the tailpipe, then at the open hood. A regular puff, a tick, a knock or a rattle each points at a different route. Record 30 seconds.
- Look at the exhaust on a cold start. Lingering white smoke or a sweet smell means coolant; blue smoke means oil.
- Write down when it happens. After a cold night, after a fill-up, under load, or all the time.
- Run the VIN. Honda's August 2026 extension is not a recall, so ask a dealer to check campaigns too.

What actually determines your number
One cylinder or all of them. A named cylinder usually costs one part; a shared cause can be a $0 reprogram or an engine.
Whether coolant is involved. Coolant in a cylinder turns a $300 ignition job into a head gasket, cylinder head or short block, $1,500 to well past $5,000.
Your VIN and your purchase date. Honda's extension counts 10 years from original purchase; Ford's 21N12 counted 7 years from warranty start.
How long it has been driven misfiring. A flashing light driven for days can add a converter at $700 to $4,500.
Engine layout. Plugs on an inline four take under an hour; the rear bank of a transverse V6 can mean removing the intake plenum.
Whether parts were bought before tests. Honda's 21-007 warns that injectors replaced before its carbon procedure "may be subject to debit."
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up: the most expensive lines and the last line are often the same job. What moves a car between them is a VIN, a purchase date and a pressure test.

Which route is yours? Five questions
1. Did it start after plug or coil work, or does it keep landing on one cylinder? โ Route 1. Ignition, proved by a swap.
2. Does it happen only on a cold start, and fade once the engine is warm? โ Route 2. Software, frozen exhaust, carbon, or the first sign of coolant.
3. Is coolant disappearing, is there white smoke, a sweet smell or overheating? โ Route 3. Stop, and pressure test.
4. Is P0171 or P0174 stored too, or does it follow a fill-up, load or a wiring job? โ Route 4. Fuel, air and electrical.
5. Is there a knock, a tick, blue smoke or low compression? โ Route 5. The valvetrain and cylinder sealing.
The five routes, cheapest first
Route 1 ยท One cylinder keeps showing up โ plugs, coils, boots and water
The tell. A steady stumble at idle, P0300 with one cylinder code beside it, often right after plug work, a car wash or rain. Worse under load.
What it actually is. A spark that is too weak, leaks to ground or never arrives. Kia's ENG 181, for 2017-2018 Forte 2.0L cars built 16 May 2016 to 7 September 2017, replaces "all four (4) ignition coils" if a misfire code has set. Stellantis's 08-027-20 replaces all four coil insulating boots on 2.4L MultiAir engines in 2015-2019 Cherokee, Renegade, Compass, Dart, 200 and ProMaster City models, with build-date limits on some. Hyundai's campaign 18-01-017-1, T2X, replaces all four plugs on certain 2018 Accent 1.6L GDI cars in 0.7 hours.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Water and gap. Ford's 23-2011, for 2019-2022 Rangers, traces P0300 to "water build up in the spark plug well(s)" and corroded ignition parts, then fits the engine cover that keeps water out. Stellantis's 09-016-24 measures every gap and replaces a plug only if it reads below 0.55 mm. A new plug gapped wrong is a new misfire.
Fix it yourself โ the coil swap test. On an engine with one coil on each plug, note which cylinder the code names. Engine off, swap that coil with its neighbour, clear only the misfire counters if your reader allows, and drive the same conditions. Misfire moves with the coil: the coil is the part, $150 to $400 installed. Misfire stays: pull that plug and look for cracks, oil or wet fuel. Misfire goes random: ignition was never the answer. The honest limit: never unplug a coil with the engine running, torque plugs to specification on aluminium heads, and a rear-bank V6 plug that needs the intake removed is shop work. At the shop โ say this: "P0300 with cylinder codes. Before any coils, swap the suspect coil to another cylinder and show me whether the misfire followed it. Check the plug gap and the plug wells for water, and look up bulletins for this VIN."
Route 2 ยท Rough on a cold start, fine when warm โ software, ice, carbon, or early coolant
The tell. The light comes on after the first start of the day, the idle shakes for a minute or two, and by the time you reach the shop the engine is warm and smooth.
What it actually is: four very different causes. Software. Ford's 25-2133, for 2023-2025 Escapes built on or before 20 March 2025 and 2025 Bronco Sports built on or before 25 March 2025 with the 1.5L EcoBoost, says P0300 and P0316 "may occur after initial engine start up following an overnight cold soak" and reprograms the PCM in 0.3 hours. Toyota's T-SB-0156-19 reprograms 2017-2020 86 automatics with "rough idle at cold start" under the 96-month or 80,000-mile federal emissions warranty. Ice. Mazda's 01-007/19, for 2014-2018 Mazda3, 2014-2017 Mazda6, 2016-2019 CX-3 and 2013-2019 CX-5, blames P0300 after a freezing night on "frozen water accumulated in the main silencer, restricting exhaust flow," typical of short trips. Carbon. Honda's 21-007 blames "carbon buildup on the intake valves" on 2016-2020 Fits, and in June 2023 Honda extended valve cleaning and software on 2018-2019 Fits to 10 years or 150,000 miles.
The fourth cause, and why it matters. GM's 18-NA-115, July 2024, replacing PIP4959G, describes a cold-start misfire that "goes away after the engine warms up" on GM's 2.8L, 3.0L and 3.6L V6 engines, caused by "cylinder block porosity causing a pinhole at the liner to deck face casting area, allowing engine coolant to leak into the affected cylinder." The dealer adds dye, warms the engine, pressurises the cooling system on a cold soak and looks inside the cylinder with a blacklight borescope. If verified, "the engine must be replaced."
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The lookup. Volkswagen's 01-21-02, for 2018, 2020 and 2021 Atlas 2.0T and 2020-2021 Atlas Cross Sport 2.0T, changed software "for better combustion stability during catalyst heating and engine warmup" and forbids replacing parts first. Honda's Fit bulletin warns that injectors replaced before its carbon procedure may be charged back.
Fix it yourself โ build the pattern before the visit. For a week, note outside temperature, whether the light came on after the first start, and trip length. Mark the cold coolant level with tape each morning. Save the freeze frame, which records engine temperature when the code set. The honest limit: carbon cleaning, reprogramming and a dye-and-borescope test are shop tools. What you bring is proof of the pattern.
Where this does not apply. If coolant is dropping, skip straight to Route 3; a cold-only misfire with coolant loss is not a software question.
At the shop โ say this: "P0300 only after a cold soak, gone when warm. Please check for a calibration update or bulletin on this VIN first. If none applies, check the coolant level history and pressure test the cooling system before any ignition or injector parts."

How do you hear a misfire, and tell it from the other things that shake a car? Listen at the tailpipe with the engine idling. A healthy engine sends out an even stream of exhaust pulses. A cylinder that is not firing leaves a gap in that stream, so the exhaust note turns into a regular puff, chuff or stumble that speeds up when you raise the revs. A random misfire sounds less regular: a lope that comes and goes. A metallic tick from the top of the engine points at the valvetrain, and a knock that rises with revs is a stop sign. Route 3 ยท Coolant is disappearing โ head gasket, block porosity, coolant intrusion
The tell. Coolant that goes down with no puddle, white exhaust smoke that lingers, a sweet smell, overheating, a rough idle that is worst after the car sits. On a reader: P0300 with P0301 to P0304, and on Fords often P0316, P0217, P1285 or P1299.
What it actually is. Coolant reaching a combustion chamber. It cannot burn, so the cylinder misfires, and it steam-cleans the piston on the way.
Honda, August 2026. On 26 August 2026 American Honda announced a warranty extension for "certain 2018-2026 Accord, 2018-2026 Accord Hybrid, 2016-2026 Civic, 2025-2026 Civic Hybrid, 2017-2026 CR-V and 2020-2026 CR-V Hybrid vehicles." The cause in its words: "the cylinder head gasket effectiveness may be reduced which may cause vehicles to experience overheating, coolant loss, misfire, and/or DTCs P0300 through P0304 stored." Cover runs "10 years from the original date of purchase or 150,000 miles," with a 6-month grace period from notification for cars already too old, and owner letters expected in early October 2026. Acura's message covers the 2025-2026 ADX and 2023-2026 Integra on the same terms. It is a warranty extension with repair bulletins behind it, not a parts request.
What Honda's bulletin actually checks. SB 26-003, the head gasket extension for the 2018-2022 Accord 1.5T with a CVT, pressurises the warm cooling system to 18 psi, removes the plugs and scans each cylinder with a borescope. No coolant: "This bulletin does not apply." Coolant: the head comes off and a warpage check decides between gasket, head and short block, at 11.5 to 14.8 flat-rate hours.
Ford's 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost. TSB 22-2322, 12 August 2022, covers 2017-2019 Escapes built on or before 8 April 2019 and 2014-2019 Fusions built on or before 10 June 2019 with the 1.5L, "due to coolant intrusion into the cylinder," and replaces the short block and head gasket. Program 21N12 paid for that repair on 2017-2019 cars for "7 years of service or 84,000 miles from the warranty start date," confirmed by a 20 psi pressure test and a borescope. TSB 22-2229, 9 June 2022, does the same with a long block for 2.0L engines in the 2015-2018 Edge and 2017-2019 Escape, Fusion, MKC and MKZ, each with a build-date limit. SSM 47204 named the 2.0L cause: "corrosion on the engine block."
GM's V8s. PIP5498M ties P050D with P0300 after a cold start, white smoke or coolant odour to "coolant getting into the cylinders," but checks cold injector balance rates first.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The clock. A 2018 Accord bought in 2019 is inside Honda's 10 years until 2029. A 2017 Escape is almost certainly outside Ford's 7 years. Same symptom, very different bill.
Fix it yourself โ measure the loss, do not mask it. Engine cold, cap never opened hot. Mark the reservoir level with tape each morning for three days, and write the mileage. Look at the tailpipe on the first start for white smoke that lingers. The honest limit: no sealer in a bottle, and no driving on a falling level. At the shop โ say this: "P0300 with coolant loss and no external leak. Run the VIN for extensions and programs first. Then pressure test the cooling system and borescope every cylinder, and show me the picture before quoting a head gasket or engine."
Which P0300 repairs does a manufacturer pay for, and which are yours? Documents draw that line, and the dates on them matter more than the badge. Honda's August 2026 extension covers the head gasket, plus a cylinder head or short block if warpage is found, on named Accord, Civic and CR-V models for 10 years from original purchase or 150,000 miles, and Acura matches it on the ADX and Integra. Ford's program 21N12 paid for 1.5L short blocks on 2017-2019 Escapes and Fusions for 7 years or 84,000 miles from warranty start, which in September 2026 leaves only cars first sold after September 2019. Honda pays for carbon cleaning on 2018-2019 Fits, and Toyota reprograms 2017-2020 86 automatics under the 96-month, 80,000-mile emissions warranty. Route 4 ยท Lean codes, fill-ups and wiring โ fuel, air and electrical shared causes
The tell. P0300 with P0171 or P0174, hesitation under load, stumbling right after a fill-up, a misfire that started after other repairs, or only at certain revs.
What it actually is. Something every cylinder shares is feeding them wrong. A lean mixture from an air leak or weak fuel pressure misfires across cylinders; our P0171 guide covers that half. The documents add less obvious ones. Ford's SSM 54948, for 2025-2026 Explorer, Aviator and Police Interceptor Utility non-hybrids built 6 February 2025 through 13 December 2025, describes a rough idle "shortly after refueling" caused by a sticking fuel level vent valve letting fuel into the vapour system, repaired with a tank and canister. Honda's 25-044, for 2023-2025 Accord Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid, says "the engine runs rough and makes a rattling noise" when a leaking injector fouls plugs, lists P0300 among other codes, and says: "Do not replace the A/F sensor before performing the inspection."
The wiring you would never suspect. GM's PIP5353F, for 1.4L Cruze, Sonic, Trax and Encore models, warns that injector connections "can be reversed leading to misfires that may occur only under specific circumstances or RPM ranges." Toyota's T-SB-0072-19 traces low fuel pressure and P0300 on 2014-2018 Highlanders to corrosion in the engine computer connector from "poorly sealed or damaged aftermarket windshield deicer harnesses," not a warranty repair. Mazda's 01-001/21 blames an idle misfire on certain CX-9 and Mazda6 2.5T engines on carbon holding the EGR valve open.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The history. A fill-up, a deicer or a recent engine job appears on no scan tool, and it is what those documents are keyed to. At the shop โ say this: "P0300 that happens after fill-ups, under load or with lean codes. Please show me fuel trims, fuel pressure and injector balance figures, check the injector wiring against the diagram, and look up bulletins before any sensor."
Route 5 ยท Tick, knock or low compression โ valvetrain and cylinder sealing
The tell. P0300 with a tick from the top of the engine, a knock that rises with revs, blue smoke, oil use, or a misfire that follows cylinder deactivation on a V6 or V8.
What it actually is. A valve that does not open or seal, or a cylinder that will not hold pressure. GM's PIP5259, for 2014-2015 Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe and Yukon 5.3L and 6.2L, describes P0300 and "tick noise" from an Active Fuel Management lifter that is "mechanically collapsed and or stuck," and replaces the lifters, guide, oil pump and oil pan. 23-NA-043, March 2024, covers 2020-2021 5.3L and 6.2L trucks and SUVs in a build window of 1 September 2020 to 31 March 2021 with "a bent push rod that leads to a collapsed lifter." PIP5752M adds "engine noise" and a "possible broken valve spring" on V8s built 1 July to 16 December 2020.
The V6s. GM's 21-NA-036, March 2022, for 3.0L and 3.6L V6 engines in models from the 2016 Camaro to the 2022 XT6, blames misfires on the deactivation cylinders 2 and 5 on oil leaking past the AFM solenoid, or "the rockers on one of these cylinders not latching." Stellantis's 09-012-20 pairs P0300 with "engine ticking noise" on 2020 Pacifica 3.6L vans built 18 to 20 August 2020, replacing a cam phaser, actuator and oil control valve. Chrysler's 09-002-14 Rev B, December 2014, the X56 warranty extension, runs a leakage test on cylinders 2, 4 and 6 of 2011-2013 3.6L engines across nine Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models, and replaces the left cylinder head at "leakage of 25% or greater."
Oil instead of coolant. Ford's 19-2243, for 2016-2017 Edge and MKX and 2017 Continental, Fusion and MKZ with 2.7L or 3.0L EcoBoost engines built 1 April 2016 through 1 January 2017, pairs P0300 with white or blue smoke and oil use of "1 liter (1 quart) in less than 4,800 km (3,000 miles)" and replaces the cylinder heads for valve guides.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The test. A compression or leak-down test turns a guess into a number, and Chrysler's 25 percent threshold shows what a number decides.
Where this does not apply. A tick that fades as the engine warms may be an exhaust leak; the ticking guide sorts those. A deep knock belongs in the engine knocking guide.
At the shop โ say this: "P0300 with a tick. Before plugs or coils, please run a compression and leak-down test on the misfiring cylinders, check that the valves open on those cylinders, and write the numbers on the repair order."
What does it actually cost to fix P0300 in 2026? It is five price lists sorted by one diagnosis. Ignition sits at the bottom: plugs installed at about $80 to $200 on an inline four and $200 to $400 on a transverse V6, and a coil at $150 to $400 once a free swap test convicts it. Software is often $0 inside warranty and 0.3 to 0.7 labour hours outside. A compression or leak-down test runs about $100 to $300, carbon cleaning $300 to $800, and a fuel injector $150 to $700 each. The top of the ladder is coolant and hardware: a head gasket at $1,500 to $5,000, and replacement engines that owners in our complaint sample were quoted at $8,300 and $9,000. Misfire or something else? Telling the shakes apart
A misfire is not the only reason an engine shakes, and the other causes have different sounds.
The misfire. A regular puff or stumble at the tailpipe that follows engine speed, often felt through the seat at idle. Random misfires lope unevenly.
The engine mount. Vibration with an even exhaust note, worst in gear at a stop or on take-off. The shaking-at-idle guide covers mounts.
The lean stumble. A sputter or surge; the sputtering guide sorts fuel from air.
The valvetrain tick. A light, fast tick from the top of the engine, the sound GM's PIP5259 puts next to P0300.
One test sorts most of them. In park, raise the revs slowly. A shake that follows revs is the engine; a shake only when moving is wheels or driveline. The rough running guide covers the rest.
What we counted in the federal complaint file
Our sample: every vehicle complaint in NHTSA's public complaint files received between 1 January 2015 and 8 September 2026, de-duplicated by report number: 777,040 unique owner reports, counted on 14 September 2026.
How many name the code. 365 complaints contain the exact code P0300 (381 with the typo "P300", left out), and 206 of them also name a cylinder code. Counting every code from P0300 to P0308: 1,394.
Coolant dominates one corner of the file. Among those 1,394, the Ford Escape, Edge and Fusion account for 452, and 395 of the 452 mention coolant or antifreeze, most on 2017-2019 models. That matches Ford's coolant intrusion bulletins; it is not a reliability ranking, and sales volumes differ widely. The Honda Accord accounts for 51 and the CR-V for 48, and 15 of the Accord reports and 6 of the CR-V reports mention a head gasket, years before Honda's extension.
What owners describe. In the 365 P0300 complaints, 78 mention coolant, 71 a loss of power, 69 spark plugs, 57 coils, 57 a flashing or blinking light, 50 a stall and 41 injectors. 10 carry the towed flag. Where mileage was stated, in 122 reports, the median was 77,199 miles.
The sound finding. 63 describe shaking or vibration, 23 a knock, 14 a tick, 10 sputtering, and none a hiss. Owners report what they feel.
Owner-reported bills. A 2017 Fusion owner was quoted "$9000 in repairs to replace engine" after coolant intrusion was confirmed; a 2017 Escape owner reported about $8,300 for a long block. Complaints are owner reports, not audited invoices.
Clearing P0300 before an inspection: why it comes back
The light is an automatic fail. Under 40 CFR 85.2222, a vehicle whose check engine light is commanded on "shall fail the OBD inspection."
A freshly cleared car is not ready. The same rule allows 2001 and newer vehicles no more than one unset readiness monitor, and clearing resets them. And a misfire from coolant, carbon or a lifter returns on the next cold start. The route to a pass is the repair, then a readiness check with your own reader.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 โ the VIN question. "What recalls, extensions, programs and bulletins show for this VIN, open or completed?" On a Honda 1.5 turbo or a Ford EcoBoost this decides the bill.
Checkpoint 2 โ the full code list and freeze frame. "Which cylinder codes are stored, pending or in history, and what was the engine temperature when P0300 set?"
Checkpoint 3 โ the swap test. "Did the misfire follow the coil when you moved it?" Minutes of labour, and it clears or convicts ignition.
Checkpoint 4 โ the coolant and compression numbers. "What did the cooling system pressure test and borescope show, and what are the compression or leakage figures per cylinder?"

Three diagnostic traps that cost owners the most
Trap 1: plugs and coils on a coolant-eating EcoBoost. The situation: a 2018 Escape 1.5L, P0300 and P0303, coolant topped up twice this month. What the shop says: "Misfire on 3. Plugs and a coil and you're good." What is really happening: Ford's 22-2322 describes this car with coolant in the cylinder; an owner in our sample had the code return after new plugs. Price versus bill: $300 to $600 of ignition parts, against a pressure test and borescope that decide the real repair. Your protective question: "Did you pressure test the cooling system and look in the cylinder with a borescope?"
Trap 2: the engine replaced for normal pitting. The situation: a GM V8 with P050D and P0300 on cold starts. What the shop says: "The deck is pitted. It needs an engine." What is really happening: GM's PIP5498M says small pitting is normal, engines replaced for it come back "as non-defective," and injector balance rates come first. Price versus bill: an injector, against an engine. Your protective question: "What were the cold injector balance rates, and did the dye show coolant streaming down the liner?"
Trap 3: parts bought before the manufacturer's procedure. The situation: a 2019 Fit with P0300 and a rough idle, or a 2020 Atlas 2.0T with cold-start misfires. What the shop says: "Injectors are going. Four injectors." What is really happening: Honda's 21-007 cleans intake valve carbon first and warns injectors replaced before it may be charged back; Volkswagen's 01-21-02 forbids replacing components before its update. Price versus bill: a free extension or a reprogram, against four injectors. Your protective question: "Is there a bulletin for P0300 on this VIN, and has its procedure been done before any parts?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers โ the mileages and outcomes are typical of the patterns in the documents and complaints above, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials.
Scenario 1 โ the CR-V inside the clock. A 2019 CR-V 1.5T bought new in 2019, 96,000 miles, coolant dropping, P0300 and P0302. An independent shop quotes $2,800 for a head gasket. A Honda dealer runs the VIN: inside 10 years and 150,000 miles. The borescope finds coolant at the gasket, no warpage, and the gasket is replaced under the extension. Lesson: the same gasket is $2,800 or nothing, and the difference is a purchase date.
Scenario 2 โ the coil that could not work. A 2017 Fusion 1.5L at 88,000 miles with P0300 and P0304. Plugs and a coil cost $420, and the code is back in two weeks with the coolant low. A pressure test and borescope confirm coolant in cylinder 4. The car is past Ford's 7-year program, so the owner prices a short block against the car's value. Lesson: $420 of parts bought before a $150 test is money spent on a question already answered.
Scenario 3 โ the tick that was a lifter. A 2015 Tahoe 5.3L with P0300 and a tick. Plugs and coils cost $650; the tick and the code stay. A dealer following PIP5259 finds a valve not moving and quotes lifters, guide and oil pump. Lesson: when the code comes with a sound, test what makes the sound first.
Your situation right now: four playbooks
"The light is flashing." Slow down, no highway, hills or towing, and get to a shop today or park the car. The converter is at risk every mile.
"Steady P0300, the car drives." Save codes, mark the coolant level, record 30 seconds, run the VIN, book a diagnosis this week.
"Coolant keeps dropping." Stop driving it. VIN first, then a pressure test and borescope.
"A shop wants to replace the engine." Ask for the borescope image and compression figures in writing, and whether a program covers it. The warranty extensions guide lists where to look.
After the fix: verify, then prevent
Verify the counters, not the dashboard. Many readers show per-cylinder misfire counts. After a week, including cold starts, they should read zero.
After a coolant repair, keep measuring. Mark the cold coolant level every few days for a month, and keep an invoice that names the cause and the test that proved it.
Record a healthy baseline. Thirty seconds at the tailpipe on a cold start turns the next stumble into a comparison. The recording guide has the method, and the check engine light guide covers the next light.

- Read and save every code and the freeze frame. Do not clear anything.
- Check whether the light is flashing, and whether coolant is low.
- Listen at the tailpipe and the open hood, and record 30 seconds of each.

- On a coil-on-plug engine with a named cylinder, do the coil swap test.
- Run a free sound check before anyone sells you parts.

- Mark the cold coolant level each morning and log when the misfire happens.
- Ask for a pressure test, borescope or compression figures before any major quote.
- After the repair, confirm misfire counters at zero through a cold start.

What we looked for and did not find. NHTSA's index lists Stellantis 18-044-26 across 2014-2026 models; the document applies only to 2024 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer with the 3.0L Hurricane HO. Volkswagen's 2022 lists name P0300 on a helpline analysis list with no published repair, and their rattle item concerns heat shields. Chrysler's 09-002-14 sends dealers to warranty bulletin D-14-12 for the X56 term; NHTSA's index lists that number with no summary and no readable document, so we state no term. 18-044-26 (PDF)
