๐จ 60-Second Triage โ P0171 on its own, steady light, engine idles and pulls normally: safe to drive to a diagnosis this week, not for months. P0171 with a flashing light, shaking, or misfire codes P0300 to P0306: drive gently and only as far as a shop; misfires send raw fuel into the catalytic converter. Stalling, surging or losing power at speed: stop driving it and tow. Hard start plus P0087: fuel pressure, Route 4. A hiss or whistle under the hood at idle: the cheapest routes on this page, 1 and 2. Before you buy any part: check that the oil filler cap is tight and the dipstick is fully seated.
P0171 is not a broken part. It is the engine computer reporting that it has added all the extra fuel it is allowed to add on one side of the engine, and the mixture is still lean.
Mazda puts the rule in one sentence: the correction "reaches the upper limit (25 % or more) for 20 s or more." Something is letting in air the computer never measured, or failing to deliver fuel it ordered. The code cannot tell you which. Neither can the part most often bought for it, the oxygen sensor that noticed the lean mixture.
The rest of this guide answers the question that costs money: where is the missing air, or the missing fuel? How to use this guide
Find the leak or the shortage before you price a part. Every route is defined by what fuel trim numbers, a smoke machine and a fuel pressure gauge show, not by the code.
One rule overrides everything here: a sensor that reports a lean mixture is a witness, not a suspect. Nissan wrote it as an instruction to its own technicians: "Do NOT replace the A/F sensor" unless a separate sensor code proves it has failed.
First: is it really a lean code, and which bank?
P0171 โ System Too Lean, Bank 1. The computer is adding fuel and has hit its ceiling. P0174 is the same message for Bank 2. P0172 and P0175 are the opposite, too rich.
What a bank is. On a V6 or V8 the cylinders sit in two rows, and bank 1 is the row with cylinder number one. Acura's 2021 dealer message names them: P0171 is the "Rear Bank [Bank 1]" and P0174 the "Front Bank [Bank 2]." An inline four or six has one row, so it can only set P0171, and the words bank 1 tell a Corolla, Cruze or CX-5 owner nothing about location.
One bank or both. On a V engine, P0171 alone points at something that feeds only that row, such as an intake gasket port or an injector on that side. P0171 with P0174 points upstream of the split: the MAF sensor, a leak into the shared plenum, or fuel pressure. In our complaint sample, 15 of the 20 reports naming P0174 also name P0171.
The companion code often says more than P0171 does.
- P0087, fuel rail pressure too low โ Toyota and Lexus pump bulletins, Route 4.
- P0101 or P1101, airflow โ GM's cracked Sonic duct and Encore air box bulletin, Routes 1 and 3.
- P0300 to P0306, misfire โ Mazda and Acura injector documents, Route 5.
- P2096 to P2099, air-fuel sensor โ the only case in which Nissan lets the sensor be replaced.
Fuel trim in plain English, and the one test that splits air from fuel
Short-term fuel trim is the computer's second-by-second correction as the upstream sensor reports rich or lean. Long-term fuel trim is the correction it has learned and applies all the time. Positive means adding fuel; near zero means the base calculation is right. P0171 means the learned correction has hit its positive limit.
The test. On an engine with a mass airflow (MAF) sensor, read total trim, short plus long, at warm idle, then at a steady 2,500 rpm in park. Albin Moore, writing in Vehicle Service Pros, describes the pattern: with an air leak between the sensor and the intake valves, trims "show a positive number at idle," and raising engine speed makes them "trend back closer to normal." The same crack is a big share of the air at idle and a small share at 2,500 rpm.
What the other answer means. If trims stay high as rpm rises, the next instrument is a fuel pressure gauge, the reading Toyota requires before any pump.
Where the test lies. Moore's caveat: "Vacuum leaks on a speed-density engine are not unmetered air," so engines that calculate airflow from manifold pressure do not behave this way. And Toyota documents a lean code with negative trims on flex-fuel Tundras and Sequoias, where the computer misjudged the ethanol in the tank. Read the numbers, not only the code.
The 10-minute driveway protocol
- Check the oil filler cap and the dipstick first. GM's bulletin 19-NA-114 builds it into its own test: dipstick fully seated, oil fill cap fully tightened. An open crankcase is a leak the computer never measured.
- Idle the engine with the hood open and listen. Walk the air duct, the cover on top of the engine and every intake hose. A hiss or whistle at idle is the cheapest clue on this page.
- On a GM 1.4L, do GM's dipstick check. If a noise comes from the PCV valve on the cam cover, pull the dipstick with the engine running and hear whether it gets quieter, as 19-NA-114 instructs. Then put it back.
- Look at the duct between the air box and the throttle body. Squeeze it, engine off, and look in the folds. Close every air box clip: Mazda's first P0171 step is the airbox's "proper fitment."
- Write down what happened just before the light. An air filter change, a battery disconnect, a fill-up. One Terrain owner's complaint records P0171 returning after both air filters were replaced.
- Pull every code, the freeze frame and the trims. Other codes, the conditions when it set, trims at idle and 2,500 rpm.
- Record 30 seconds at idle with the hood open. A whistle that will not perform in the service lane is still on your phone.
Ten minutes, no parts, and you have done the sorting the first half of an $80 to $150 diagnostic fee mostly buys.

What actually determines your number
Air or fuel. A split hose is a $15 to $40 part; a fuel pump is $600 to $1,500 installed. The trim test and a smoke test settle it for under $150.
Whether the leak is a hose or built into a part. A separate PCV valve runs about $110 to $220. On GM's 1.4L the valve is part of the camshaft cover, so the fix is a whole cover, $400 to $900 outside coverage.
How deep the leak sits. A duct takes ten minutes to reach; an intake manifold gasket takes the manifold off, $680 to $1,250.
Whether a document covers your VIN. Toyota's pump and flex-fuel bulletins run under warranty clocks; GM's 1.4L cover coverages ran ten years, now almost over.
How many parts were bought before anything was measured. A 2014 Malibu owner told NHTSA of spending over $1,000 on a PCV valve, MAF sensor and O2 sensor before the cause turned out to be loose intake bolts.
Port or direct injection. A port injector installed is $150 to $350, a direct-injection one $350 to $700; the injector cost guide explains the gap.
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up: the expensive lines and the free last line are often the same repair. What moves a car between them is a VIN, a trim reading at two engine speeds, and a gauge.
Your number, by what you drive
Which route is yours? Five questions
1. Do trims fall at 2,500 rpm, or can you hear a hiss at idle? โ Route 1. Unmetered air through a duct, hose or line.
2. Is it a whistle from the cam cover, or a GM engine with a PCV bulletin? โ Route 2. The crankcase ventilation system.

The five routes, cheapest first
Route 1 ยท A hiss at idle โ unmetered air through a duct, hose or line
The tell. A hiss, whistle or sucking sound at idle with the hood open. A rough or hunting idle. Trims high at idle that fall back toward normal at 2,500 rpm.
What it actually is. Air entering after the MAF sensor has counted it: a cracked intake duct, a split vacuum hose, a line that has come off, a brake booster hose or check valve, an intake manifold gasket. A 2012 Sonic owner's dealer found the "throttle body intake tube torn," about $450 repaired.
Two documents where the leak is a part number. GM's coverage 16139 says 2012-2014 Sonics with the 1.8L may set P0171 or P0101 from a cracked air cleaner outlet duct; the dealer inspects it for cracks or splits and replaces it in 0.2 hours. Stellantis bulletin 09-025-25, for the 2025 Ram 1500, Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer with the 3.0L Hurricane HO built 16 September 2024 to 7 June 2025, lists P0171, P0174 and P0300 with "Hissing noise from the engine." The cause is a purge hose latch with diminished retention: dark grey defective, light grey correct, 0.3 hours.
And one on the big V8s. GM's PIP5341, for 2007-2016 full-size V8 trucks and SUVs, years varying by model, blames rough idle with P0171 or P0174 on an engine cover rubbing through the PCV tube.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The clamp, the latch and the bolts. A latch that never clicked, a clamp not retightened, the Malibu whose $1,000 of parts ended at loose intake bolts. All free to check.
Fix it yourself โ find it by ear, then by eye. With the engine idling, hold one end of a length of hose to your ear and move the other along the intake; a leak gets suddenly loud. A cracked duct or hose is a $15 to $40 part and two clamps. The honest limit: never spray starting fluid or carb cleaner around a running engine to find a leak; it is a fire risk. A leak at an intake gasket is a shop job, and a $60 to $150 smoke test finds it faster than you can.
At the shop โ say this: "P0171, trims high at idle and falling at 2,500 rpm. Please smoke test the intake and vacuum lines and show me where the smoke comes out before quoting any sensor."
Route 2 ยท A whistle from the cam cover โ the PCV system
The tell. A whistle from the engine compartment, a rough idle and P0171. On GM's 1.4L the noise comes from the PCV valve on the cam cover and changes when the dipstick is pulled.
What it actually is. The positive crankcase ventilation system draws blow-by gases out of the engine into the intake through a valve that limits crankcase vacuum. A torn diaphragm or a leaking tube lets air bypass the MAF sensor. GM's 19-NA-114 describes the tear "allowing un-metered air to enter the crankcase," and its older Cruze bulletin PI0850A the result: "a whistle noise heard from the engine compartment."
GM's own test, in order. 19-NA-114, May 2019, covers the 1.4L in the 2011-2016 Cruze, 2012-2019 Sonic, 2013-2019 Trax and Encore, 2012-2015 Volt and 2014-2017 ELR: "Confirmation of the PCV valve performance must be done before replacing the camshaft cover." Seat the dipstick and tighten the cap. Listen at the PCV valve; if there is noise, check whether it gets quieter with the dipstick out. Hold a tissue at the PCV vent: normal operation makes it flutter, a torn diaphragm holds it against the port. Noise plus vacuum means a new cover; neither means "the PCV system is not the cause." PI0850A adds a finger over the breather port: whistle stops, trims come down.
Who paid for the cover. GM coverage N202299080 covered about 810,404 2014 Encore, 2011-2014 Cruze, 2012-2014 Sonic and 2014 Trax vehicles with the 1.4L, and N192210230 about 249,564 2015-2016 Cruze and 2015 Sonic cars. Both describe a cracked diaphragm, rough idle and "Fuel Trim Lean (P0171)," for "10 years or 120,000 miles" from the in-service date. In September 2026, only cars first put into service after September 2016 can still be inside. Run the VIN anyway.
Bigger GM engines. PIP5686, for 2019-2020 Silverado and Sierra 1500 5.3L, traces "air leak noise from the PCV system" to a foul-air tube not fully seated, 0.1 hours. PIE0433 asked technicians to check the same kind of tube joint on the 3.6L V6 while engineering searched for a root cause; PIE0433A later ended that request.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The test itself. It takes minutes and a tissue, and either justifies a $400 to $900 cover or clears it.
Fix it yourself โ the tissue test, not the cover. On a GM 1.4L, run 19-NA-114 in your driveway: cap tight, dipstick in, listen, dipstick out, tissue at the vent. Write down what the tissue did. On engines with a separate PCV valve in a hose, the valve is often a $15 to $40 part you can pull and shake. At the shop โ say this: "Before a cam cover is ordered, please do the PCV test in 19-NA-114 and write the result on the repair order. And run the VIN for N202299080, N192210230 and any open coverage."
P0171 and a sound you cannot place? Check free whether it is a vacuum hiss โ
How do you tell a vacuum hiss from a whistle you have simply never noticed? From the driver's seat, you mostly cannot. In our sample of 102 federal complaints naming P0171, not one owner used the word hiss or whistle, yet GM's own bulletins describe "a whistle noise heard from the engine compartment" and "air leak noise from the PCV system" as the symptom. The sound lives under the hood at idle, where nobody is listening, and it disappears into road noise the moment you drive. Which P0171 repairs does a manufacturer pay for, and which are yours? Documents draw the line, not the service adviser. A 2014-2020 Toyota named in T-SB-0009-23, or a Lexus in L-SB-0005-23, gets its fuel pump under the powertrain warranty for 60 months or 60,000 miles, but only after a manual gauge shows low pressure. A flex-fuel 2009-2019 Tundra or 2009-2018 Sequoia gets a reprogram and pump under the emission warranty, 96 months or 80,000 miles. A 1.4L Cruze, Sonic, Trax or Encore got its cam cover under a ten-year coverage that has mostly run out. A 2021-2023 F-150 3.3L gets a 0.3-hour reprogram under Ford's bulletin. A cracked hose on a car outside those lists is yours, and it is also the cheapest line here. Pulscar sorts which family a lean-code sound belongs to before the argument about who pays begins.
Route 3 ยท Code after an air filter job, or airflow codes alongside โ the MAF and the air box
The tell. The light came on within days of an air filter change or anything that opened the air box. Flat acceleration. P0101 or P1101 alongside. On a V engine, often both banks, because one sensor feeds both.
What it actually is. The MAF sensor measures incoming air. If it under-reports, because the element is contaminated or the air path around it is not what the calibration expects, the computer under-fuels at every speed. Moore notes that MAF errors show a "lower than normal load PID value," a number any live-data scanner displays.
The manufacturer's order of checks. Mazda's MT-021/17 and its replacement MT-004-22, for SKYACTIV models from the 2012 Mazda3 to the 2023 CX-50, set the sequence: "Inspect the airbox/air filter for proper fitment," then the MAF, then the A/F sensor, then trims. Parts come last. GM's PIP5240F, for 2013-2019 Encore and Trax with the 1.4L, adds: if normal diagnosis for P0171 or P1101 finds nothing, check the air cleaner housing has "the proper content for the engine application," because the two 1.4L versions use different internal pieces.
What owners report. Eight of the 102 complaints mention the MAF. A 2014 Sonic owner bought a MAF sensor on a parts store's reading; three days later the light and hesitation were back, and the code was P0171.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The air box. A clip left open, a filter seated on its edge, a duct not pushed home: free, and first on Mazda's list.
Fix it yourself โ clean it once, then measure. Remove the MAF and spray the element with MAF-specific cleaner, about $10; never brake cleaner, never a finger or brush on the element. Let it dry, refit, clear the code and re-read trims after a drive. The honest limit: if cleaning changes nothing, do not buy a $270 to $450 sensor on a guess; ask for live airflow compared with specification.
At the shop โ say this: "The code followed an air filter change. Before a MAF sensor, please check air box fitment and the duct, then show me live airflow and calculated load at idle and 2,500 rpm against specification."
Route 4 ยท Hard starts, stumbles under load, a pump you can hear or cannot โ fuel delivery
The tell. Long cranking after the car sits or after a fill-up, stumbling under load, stalls, trims high at every speed, P0087.
What it actually is. Not enough fuel arriving: a weak pump, a restricted filter or strainer, a pressure regulator, or injectors. Unlike an air leak, the shortage does not shrink as rpm rises, because the engine needs more fuel, not less.
Toyota's bulletin, step by step. T-SB-0009-23, February 2023, "Fuel Pump (Loss of Fuel Pressure)," covers 2014-2020 Toyota models from the 4Runner and Camry to the Tundra, limited by engine and model code in its table, with a hard start or MIL and P0171, P0174 or P0087. Lexus L-SB-0005-23 is its twin for 2013-2020 Lexus models. Scan data may show "positive fuel trims including a no pressure condition verified by a manual fuel pressure gauge." If pressure is within standard, "This bulletin does NOT apply." If not, the pump is replaced under the powertrain warranty, 60 months or 60,000 miles.
The flex-fuel exception. T-SB-0166-19 covers 2009-2018 Sequoia and 2009-2019 Tundra with the 3UR-FBE flex-fuel V8: extended crank, P0171 or P0174, negative trims, and an "alcohol density estimate" higher than the fuel in the tank. The repair is a reprogram and a new pump, 2.2 hours, under the 96-month or 80,000-mile emission warranty.
What owners report, and what it sounds like. Fifteen of the 102 complaints mention a fuel pump. A 2019 Tacoma owner: "Fuel pump whines in tank," with trims maxed out. Three Mazda CX-5 owners tie P0171 to a failed fuel pump. The listening test is free: engine off, car quiet, ignition on, ear at the fuel filler or rear seat. On many cars a healthy pump hums briefly; a loud whine, or silence, is worth a gauge.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The warranty clock. A Toyota inside 60 months or 60,000 miles that meets the bulletin gets a free pump, but only with a gauge reading on the repair order. Outside it, a pump is $600 to $1,500; the fuel pump cost guide covers access-panel and tank-drop jobs.
Where this does not apply. Pressure within specification means the pump is not your problem: Route 5. A direct-injection engine has two pumps, so ask which one a quote is for.
At the shop โ say this: "Hard start and P0171. Please put a manual fuel pressure gauge on it and write the reading and the specification on the repair order. If this VIN is in T-SB-0009-23 or L-SB-0005-23, handle it under that bulletin."
Route 5 ยท Both banks, misfires, or no leak anywhere โ one shared cause, and the sensor question
The tell. P0171 with P0174 or misfires, or a clean smoke test and normal fuel pressure.
What it actually is. A cause upstream of both banks, injectors that do not deliver what they are told, software, or, least often, a sensor that is genuinely wrong.
Nissan's flow chart. NTB19-022, March 2019, revised P0171 and P0174 diagnosis for 2017-2018 Altima and 2017-2019 Sentra, Versa Note, Rogue, Murano, Armada, Frontier, Titan and NV. After a confirmation drive ending in twenty minutes at 2,500 to 3,000 rpm, the sensor is replaced only if P2096 to P2099 appears. If not: "Do NOT replace the A/F sensor."
Two makers point at injectors. Mazda's MT-004-22 checks air box, MAF and sensor, then: "Replace the fuel injectors" if trims stay abnormal. Acura's dealer message of 30 August 2021 asked for 2016-2020 MDX, RDX and TLX vehicles with stored misfires, and possibly P0171 or P0174, "traced to the fuel injectors," excluding cars with P0087 or P0088. That was a parts collection request, not a published repair.
Software, and a sensor that really is fooled. Ford's 23-2195, superseded in July 2025 by 25-2342, says 2021-2023 F-150s with the 3.3L may set P0171 because of "the software level of the PCM"; the fix is a 0.3-hour reprogram. A Stellantis STAR case, S1918000008, which NHTSA's index lists for 2018-2020 Wrangler, describes oil from the bank 1 valve cover seal reaching an oxygen sensor and setting P0171 among other codes. Even there, the leak is the cause.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The bulletin lookup. A dealer can check your VIN for a calibration update in minutes, and on the 3.3L F-150 that is the whole repair.
Where this does not apply. P0171 alone on a V6 or V8 points at one bank. If misfires dominate, the rough running guide and the shaking-at-idle guide sort ignition from fuel.
At the shop โ say this: "P0171 and P0174 together. Before any oxygen or air-fuel sensor, I would like it confirmed by its own code or a documented test, the fuel pressure reading, and a check for calibration updates on this VIN."
What does fixing a P0171 code actually cost in 2026? It is two price lists separated by a test under $150. The air side is cheap: a tightened clamp or reseated oil cap at nothing, a cracked duct or vacuum hose at $15 to $40 in parts, a smoke test at $60 to $150, a PCV valve at $110 to $220, and a cam cover with a built-in valve at $400 to $900. An intake manifold gasket, $680 to $1,250, is the expensive end of air. The fuel side starts where air stops: a pressure test at $50 to $150, a fuel pump at $600 to $1,500, and a direct-injection injector set at $1,000 to $3,000. The part people buy first, an upstream oxygen sensor at $200 to $500, fixes the code only when it proves it has failed. What we counted in the federal complaint file
Our sample: every vehicle complaint in NHTSA's public complaint files received between 1 January 2015 and 8 September 2026, de-duplicated by report number: 777,040 unique owner reports, counted on 14 September 2026. We searched each owner's description for the exact code P0171.
The code is rare in the file. 102 complaints name P0171; one more wrote P171 and we left it out. 20 name P0174, and 15 of those also name P0171. These are owner accounts, not audited repair records, and too few to rank models; the most frequent nameplates were the Cruze (10), Sonic (6) and Focus (5).
What owners describe. 25 mention a stall and 18 a loss of power; only 3 carry the towed flag. Where mileage was stated, in 42 reports, the median was 85,375 miles. Parts named: fuel pump in 15, PCV or crankcase in 10, valve or cam cover in 8, MAF in 8, injectors in 8, an oxygen or air-fuel sensor in 7. One 2011 Cruze owner replaced three valve covers.
The sound finding. Not one of the 102 uses the word hiss or whistle. Eight say sputter, ten use a form of sound, five say noise, three say ticking. Owners report what they feel from the seat; the leak noises GM describes live under the hood at idle.
The sensor finding. Two reports describe oxygen sensors replaced on a P0171 car. A 2013 Sonic owner replaced both O2 sensors, a thermostat and a catalytic converter, and the codes kept returning. The Malibu owner replaced one before the loose intake bolts were found. Two reports is not a rate; it is two households paying for a witness.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 โ the VIN and the bulletin lookup. "What bulletins and coverages show for this VIN and this code?" Free, and sometimes the whole conversation.
Checkpoint 2 โ the trims. "What were short and long term trims at idle and at 2,500 rpm, on each bank?" The numbers that decide smoke or gauge.
Checkpoint 3 โ the smoke test. "Where did smoke come out, and can I see a photo?" "Nothing found" is also a result: it moves you to the fuel side.
Checkpoint 4 โ the pressure reading. "What did the gauge read, and what is the specification?" Toyota will not replace a pump without it.
Checkpoint 5 โ the fee and the ceiling. "What does diagnosis cost, does it credit toward the repair, and will you call me before anything over this figure?" Expect roughly $80 to $150 at an independent shop.
Three diagnostic traps that cost owners the most
Trap 1: the oxygen sensor bought on the code. The situation: P0171 and a parts store printout suggesting an O2 or air-fuel sensor. What the shop says: "Your oxygen sensor is reading lean. Replace it and the code goes away." What is really happening: the sensor is doing its job. Nissan's NTB19-022 forbids replacing it unless its own codes appear after a set drive, and Mazda checks it third, then replaces injectors. Our O2 sensor cost guide covers when it genuinely fails. Your protective question: "Which sensor code, other than P0171, shows this sensor has failed?"
Trap 2: the cam cover replaced without the test. The situation: a GM 1.4L with P0171 and a rough idle. What the shop says: "These covers always go. New cover." What is really happening: often true, and GM still wrote 19-NA-114 to demand the test first. A cover that passes means the air is coming from elsewhere. Price versus bill: minutes of technician time, against $400 to $900 per cover. Your protective question: "What did the tissue do at the PCV vent, and did the noise change with the dipstick out?"
Trap 3: the fuel pump sold without a gauge. The situation: hard starts and P0171 at 90,000 miles. What the shop says: "Fuel pump's getting weak. It's a lean code." What is really happening: maybe. Toyota's T-SB-0009-23 makes the gauge the gate: pressure in specification and the bulletin does not apply. A lean code without a pressure reading is a hypothesis. Price versus bill: $50 to $150 for the reading, against $600 to $1,500 for a pump. Your protective question: "What was the fuel pressure reading, and what is the specification?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers โ the mileages and outcomes are typical of the patterns in the documents and complaints above, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials.
Scenario 1 โ the sensor, then the hose. A 2013 crossover at 110,000 miles, P0171, a slightly rough idle. The parts store suggests an upstream O2 sensor: $310 installed. The light returns in a week. A $120 smoke test finds a split vacuum hose, a $25 part. Total $455 for a $145 problem. Lesson: the smoke test is not the expensive extra step. It is the cheap first one.
Scenario 2 โ the whistle and the tissue. A 1.4L Cruze with a whistle at idle and P0171. The first quote is a cam cover, $620. The owner asks for 19-NA-114: the tissue flutters and the noise ignores the dipstick, so the PCV passes. Smoke then finds a loose clamp on the intake duct. Diagnosis plus a clamp, under $150. Lesson: a document that tells a dealer to test before replacing is also a script for the customer.
Scenario 3 โ the Toyota with a clock. A 2019 Camry at 52,000 miles, hard starts after fill-ups, P0171 and P0087. An independent quote for a pump is $1,100. At the dealer, a gauge shows low pressure, the car matches T-SB-0009-23, and it is inside 60 months and 60,000 miles. Lesson: the same pump is $1,100 or nothing, and the difference is a gauge reading and a VIN.
Best and worst engines for P0171, and what the lists get wrong
Search for engines to avoid and you get complaint counts, a poor proxy for cost.
What the documents say instead. Engine codes and dates matter: Toyota's pump bulletin applies by engine and model code, not badge. No list of years to avoid can hold a VIN-level fact.
Where the lists mislead. They treat a documented engine as the bad outcome. A known fault with a written test is a cheaper diagnosis than an unknown one.
The honest ranking, by what a P0171 costs you.
- Best position: an engine with a documented test and a live warranty or coverage window.
- Also good: any MAF-equipped engine with easy intake access, where the 2,500 rpm test and a smoke test settle most cases.
- Budget for diagnosis: V6 and V8 engines where the leak can hide under the intake manifold.
- Genuinely uncovered risk: direct-injection injectors on a car outside every bulletin and warranty.
Your situation right now: four playbooks
"The light just came on and the car drives normally." Cap, dipstick, air box clips; codes and trims at idle and 2,500 rpm; 30 seconds recorded. Smoke test this week if trims fall with rpm.
"It stalls, bucks or loses power." Stop driving it, and tow if it stalls in traffic. Ask for a fuel pressure reading and a VIN lookup before any part; the sputtering guide and the hesitation guide cover the symptoms around the code.
"A shop wants to replace the oxygen sensor." Ask which code, other than P0171, proves it failed. If none, ask for a smoke test and a pressure reading instead.
"GM 1.4L with a whistle." Do the dipstick and tissue test from 19-NA-114, write down the result, and ask the dealer to run the VIN for N202299080 and N192210230.
After the fix: verify, then prevent
Verify with numbers, not a dark dashboard. Clearing a code turns the light off whether the fault is fixed or not. After a drive, ask for trims at idle and 2,500 rpm back near zero on each bank, on the invoice beside the before figures. GM's PIP5686 confirms its fix with two five-minute idles and a code check; Nissan's confirmation drive runs twenty minutes.
