Quick triage. Rough idle, hesitation, or a drop in fuel economy with no cylinder-specific code — try a $10-$25 cleaner through one tank before anyone quotes parts; deposits are the most common cause and the cheapest to fix. Cylinder-specific misfire — the coil and plug are the first two suspects and the injector is the third, in that order. Strong fuel smell, hard starting, or a fuel level dropping fast — a leaking injector is a fire and engine-oil-dilution risk, and that one gets looked at now. Direct-injection turbo with rough idle and hesitation but injectors that test fine — you are probably looking at carbon on the intake valves, which is a different repair entirely.
The one thing that changes the whole fuel injector repair
Cleaning is the step this repair is usually sold past.
Deposits are a real and common failure mode. Fuel leaves varnish behind, the spray pattern degrades from a fine cone into a dribble, combustion gets uneven, and the car idles rough and drinks more fuel. That is a $10 to $25 bottle of cleaner or a $60 to $200 service. What it is not, and what it regularly gets sold as, is a set of new injectors at $150 to $700 each. Nobody publishes a figure for how often cleaning would have been enough, and the federal record cannot answer it either — only 27 of the 3,792 injector complaints we analyzed below mention cleaning at all. What can be said plainly is what the order costs: cleaning first is $10 to $200, replacing first is $150 to $700 per hole.
The second fact reorganizes the price entirely: whether your engine is port-injected or direct-injected. Port injectors spray into the intake at 40 to 60 psi and cost $40 to $100 apiece. Direct injectors spray into the cylinder against combustion pressure at 2,000 to 5,000 psi, cost $150 to $500 apiece, and bring single-use high-pressure lines, sizing rings, and sometimes computer coding with them. Same repair name, roughly triple the money, and most price guides average the two into a number that describes neither.
Everything else follows from those two facts. Clean before you replace. Find out which injection system you have before you budget. And when replacement is genuinely warranted, get the flow numbers rather than an opinion.
By the end of this guide you will know how to prove an injector is failing without paying for diagnosis, how to rebuild your own quote from labor hours, why the carbon problem on modern turbo engines imitates injector failure and costs differently, and which parts must go on the estimate while the fuel rail is already off.

Fuel injectors are the same pattern of misdiagnosed repairs in a more expensive form: a symptom that several parts share, and the priciest of them gets named first.
The injector is rarely the likeliest of five causes
Read the disambiguation section first. A rough-running engine has at least five plausible causes and the injector is rarely the cheapest or the likeliest. The people who spend the most in this category are the ones who arrive already convinced.
Then run the protocol. It is free, it takes about ten minutes, and it produces exactly the evidence a shop should be producing: which cylinder, whether the coil moves the fault, whether the injector clicks, and what the fuel trims are doing.
One rule covers most of it: on a misfire, the order is coil, then plug, then injector. Coils fail most often and are the easiest to test for free. Plugs are next and are visible once the coil is out. The injector is third, and by the time you get there you have eliminated two cheaper parts rather than guessing among three.
Is it even the injector? The five-way split
Split 1 — What do the codes say? P0201-P0208 are injector circuit codes naming a cylinder — the closest thing to a direct accusation the car gives. P0301-P0308 are misfires shared by coil, plug, and injector. P0171 or P0174 mean a lean bank, which points at unmetered air more often than fuel. A bare P0300 points at something shared: pressure, a vacuum leak, or timing.
Split 2 — Has the coil been swapped? This costs nothing and eliminates the most common cause. Move the coil from the misfiring cylinder to a neighbor and see whether the code follows. If it does, you are done and the injector was never involved.
Split 3 — Constant or intermittent? A clogged injector is worst at idle and light throttle and improves as flow rises. An electrical failure is abrupt and repeatable. Carbon on a direct-injection engine builds over tens of thousands of miles and shows as gradual roughness.
Split 4 — Can you smell fuel? A raw fuel smell, hard hot starts, black smoke, or a fuel gauge falling faster than usual suggests an injector leaking or stuck open. That is a different category — it dilutes engine oil, wastes fuel, and is a genuine fire consideration. A car that smells like gas covers where else that smell comes from before you assume.
Split 5 — Direct injection or not? Most 2015-and-newer turbo engines are, and many naturally aspirated ones too. It changes the part price, the labor, the failure mode, and adds the valve-carbon problem that imitates injector failure. Knowing before you get a quote is worth several hundred dollars.
The 10-minute fuel injector protocol

Get the codes read free. Parts chains scan at no charge; write down every code. Saw P0203 or similar circuit code → an electrical fault in that injector, and the diagnosis is nearly settled. Saw P0303 → a cylinder is misfiring, but three parts share the blame. Saw P0171 → lean condition, which usually means air, not fuel.

Swap the coil. Move the suspect cylinder's coil to a neighboring cylinder, clear the code, drive a few miles. Saw the code follow the coil → it is the coil, not the injector. Saw the code stay → keep going down this list.

Read the plug in that hole. It is exposed once the coil is off. Saw a wet, fuel-soaked plug → that cylinder is getting too much fuel, which fits a leaking injector. Saw a dry, clean, white-ish plug → that cylinder may be getting too little. Saw a normal tan tip → the fueling in that cylinder is probably fine.

Listen to each injector. With the engine idling, hold a long screwdriver against the body of each injector and put your ear to the handle. Saw a steady, even tick from every injector → they are all being energized. Saw one silent injector → an electrical fault in that one.

Compare resistance, if you have a multimeter. Unplug each injector and measure across the pins. Saw one reading half an ohm or more off its neighbors → that is your suspect. The spread matters more than the absolute number.

Look at fuel trims. Any $25 scanner shows them. Saw long-term trim well above zero → the engine is compensating for a restriction. Saw trims near zero with a misfire → fueling is not the problem.

Run a bottle of cleaner and drive a tank. $10-$25 and one week. Saw the roughness improve or disappear → it was deposits, and you have saved several hundred dollars. Saw no change at all → deposits are eliminated and testing is the next step.
Find your fuel injector situation
- Rough idle and worse fuel economy, no specific code — start with cleaner. Route 1.
- Cylinder-specific misfire, coil and plug already cleared — Route 2.
- Injector circuit code naming one cylinder — Route 2, and the diagnosis is nearly done.
- Fuel smell, hard starting, oil level rising — Route 3, and treat it as urgent.
- Over 120,000 miles with several cylinders affected — Route 4, set replacement.
- Direct-injection turbo, gradual roughness, injectors test fine — Route 5, carbon on the valves.

What determines the fuel injector price
1. Port or direct injection. The dominant factor. Port parts $40-$100 each, direct $150-$500, plus single-use lines, sizing rings, and sometimes coding.
2. How many you replace. Parts scale directly, labor barely does — which makes the set decision economic rather than moral.
3. Whether the intake manifold comes off. On many V6 and V8 engines it does: 1 to 3 extra hours plus a gasket, which is why the same repair doubles against an inline four.
4. Labor rate. $80-$130 per hour at independents, $150-$200 at dealers. Across a three-hour job that is a $200 difference on its own.
5. Fuel type. Diesel common-rail injectors are a different economy: $500-$1,200 each installed, and full sets on a light-duty diesel truck reach several thousand.
6. Coding and calibration. Some direct-injection systems require new injectors to be coded to the ECU with a flow correction value. Without the tool it cannot be finished, which quietly rules out some shops.
7. What is found on the way in. Cracked gaskets, brittle vacuum lines, and corroded connectors are common on older engines, and a good estimate says what happens to the price if they appear.
Check a fuel injector quote in 60 seconds
Injector quotes swing more than almost any repair, because two engines with the same symptom can be three times apart in price. Rebuild the number and the swing stops being mysterious.

Three worked examples, because the shape differs completely by system.
One port injector on an inline four. 1.5 hours × $110 is $165 of labor, a $70 injector, $15 of seals. Total near $250, which is why a quote in the $150-$350 band is normal and $600 for the same work is not.
Full set on a port-injected V6 at 130,000 miles. Intake off, 3.5 hours × $120 is $420, six injectors at $75 is $450, intake gasket $70, rail seals $40. Total near $980. Since the labor is being paid once, doing all six here costs about $500 more than doing one — and doing one now and another next year costs the labor twice.
One direct-injection injector on a turbo four. 2.5 hours × $130 is $325, a $260 injector, a $70 single-use high-pressure line, $20 of sizing rings. Total near $675, plus coding time if the system requires it. This is the number that shocks people who budgeted from a generic average.
Two flags. A direct-injection quote with no line for the high-pressure line or sealing rings is incomplete — neither is optional or reusable. And a shop quoting replacement with nothing flow-tested or swapped is selling a hypothesis at parts prices.
The while-you're-in-there list for a fuel injector
Injector labor is dominated by access, so the parts that share that access are nearly free at this moment and expensive later. This is where an ordinary invoice and a smart one diverge.

The last row matters most on modern engines: the intake comes off for injector work anyway, and that is the same access needed to clean carbon off the valves. Bundling turns two expensive jobs into one, and almost nobody is offered it.

Two rows account for most of the shock people report. The D-4S line surprises owners who count cylinders and assume four injectors — that engine family runs a direct and a port injector per cylinder, so a full set is eight parts. And the diesel line is a different universe: on a common-rail truck, one injector can cost what a full gasoline set does.
Which fuel injector route is yours? Answer five questions
- Is there an injector circuit code naming a cylinder? Yes → Route 2.
- Do you smell fuel, or is the oil level rising? Yes → Route 3, and treat it as urgent.
- Has cleaner been tried at all? No → Route 1 first.
- Are you past 120,000 miles with several cylinders involved? Yes → Route 4.
- Direct injection, gradual roughness, injectors test fine? Yes → Route 5.
Route 1 — Clean before you replace
🟢 Who it fits: rough idle, hesitation, or a fuel economy drop with no cylinder-specific code. Cost: $10-$200. The catch: it takes a week to know, and shops make almost nothing on this route, so it is rarely the one you are offered.
Deposits are the most common reason an injector misbehaves. Varnish builds on the pintle and tip, the spray degrades from an even cone to an uneven stream, and the cylinder gets a poorer mix. The engine still runs — it runs worse, drinks more, feels flat.
The escalation is cheap and ordered. A quality cleaner through a full tank, $10-$25, resolves a meaningful share of mild cases. An on-car service feeding cleaner into the rail at higher concentration is $60-$150. Off-car ultrasonic cleaning with before-and-after flow testing is $100-$200 for a set — the most thorough option short of replacement, and it produces the numbers that show whether parts were ever needed.
What cleaning cannot fix, and where you should stop trying: an injector that is electrically dead, one that is stuck open and leaking, and mechanical wear inside a high-mileage direct injector. Circuit codes and fuel smells mean skip this route.
The cheap cause first. A $10-$25 bottle of detergent additive is the cheap cause on this route, and it is the only step on the whole page that costs less than a tank of fuel. Two free ones come with it: reading the codes, and the screwdriver listening test. Do all three before anyone writes an estimate.
Fix it yourself
This is the rare repair where the DIY version is also the correct first step for everyone.
The cleaner, $10-$25. Buy a name-brand fuel-system cleaner rather than a generic bottle, add it to a nearly empty tank, fill up, and drive that tank normally. One tank, not one drive.
The listening test, free. A long screwdriver against each injector with your ear on the handle tells you which are being energized. Ten minutes.
The resistance check, $15 for a multimeter. Unplug and measure each injector, then compare the readings against each other. An outlier is your suspect. This is the single most useful cheap measurement in the whole category.
What not to DIY: anything on a direct-injection rail. Those hold thousands of psi after shutdown, the lines are single-use, and the failure mode is fuel spray onto a hot engine.
At the shop — what to say:
"Before we talk about replacement, I want an injector service and a flow test rather than new parts. If the flow numbers come back bad on a specific injector, I'll authorize replacing that one."
Rough idle, and not sure whether it is a $20 bottle or a $700 injector?

Does fuel injector cleaner actually work? On deposits, yes, and deposits are the most common reason an injector misbehaves. Fuel leaves varnish on the pintle and tip, the spray degrades from a fine cone into an uneven stream, and the cylinder gets a worse mix — which the driver feels as rough idle, hesitation, and worse economy. A quality cleaner through one full tank at $10 to $25 addresses mild cases; an on-car service at $60 to $150 addresses moderate ones; ultrasonic cleaning off the car at $100 to $200 for a set is the thorough version and returns before-and-after flow numbers. None of it touches a dead injector, one stuck open, or worn internals — those need parts. The money-saving order is cleaner, then testing, then replacement, and the expensive mistake is starting at the end. The four tests, in order, and what the numbers mean
This is the sequence a good shop follows, and knowing it lets you tell testing from guessing.
1. Circuit before part. A P0201-style code names an injector circuit, not an injector. A blown fuse, a failed driver inside the engine computer, an open wire, or a bad ground produce the same code. A noid light plugged into the connector confirms the computer is actually commanding that injector: flashing means the signal is there and the fault is downstream; dark means chase the wiring before buying anything.
2. Resistance, as a screening test only. Key off, connector unplugged, meter across the two pins. High-impedance injectors — the common type — typically read 11 to 17 ohms; low-impedance ones read 1 to 5. The important part is not the absolute number but the spread: all injectors on an engine should sit within roughly half an ohm of each other, so a 14-ohm injector next to three 12-ohm ones is a valid suspect even though it is technically in range. What resistance cannot tell you is whether the injector opens properly, flows correctly, or sprays a clean pattern — it only rules out an open or shorted coil. Most gasoline direct injectors are solenoid-type and can be screened this way; some are piezo-actuated, where resistance means little and a waveform or scan-tool test is needed instead — worth asking before anyone treats a resistance reading as proof either way.
3. Fuel pressure baseline. Low rail pressure imitates clogged injectors precisely, and checking it takes minutes — it eliminates the pump and regulator from the conversation.
4. Balance and leak-down. The balance test commands each injector in turn and compares how far rail pressure drops per cylinder — an uneven drop is the clearest evidence of a flow problem short of bench testing. Leak-down is the mirror image: pressurize with the key on and the engine off, then watch for pressure creeping down, which points at an injector dribbling. Ask for the numbers from both, not the conclusion.
Route 2 — One injector, confirmed
🟡 Who it fits: an injector circuit code, or a cylinder misfire where the coil and plug have been cleared. Cost: $150-$350 on port injection, $350-$700 on direct. The catch: shops often quote the set because the labor is already there, and under 100,000 miles that is usually unnecessary.
Here the diagnosis is real and the decision is scope: one injector has failed, electrically or with documented flow variance, and the others have not been shown to be failing.
Under roughly 100,000 miles, replace the one — the rest have life left and on an inline four the labor to return is small. Past 120,000, or when the flow test shows several off-spec, the set is better arithmetic, which Route 4 covers.
Two things belong on the estimate regardless of scope: new sealing rings for any injector disturbed, because reused hardened seals leak a month later, and on direct injection the single-use high-pressure line, which is a manufacturer requirement rather than an upsell.
Ask about matching, too. On some engines a new injector alongside older ones flows differently enough to produce a subtle imbalance, and on systems that use coding the new part carries a calibration number that has to be entered. Neither is a reason to replace the set, but both are reasons to ask whether the shop has the tool.
The cheap cause first. Before the injector, the cheap cause is the circuit it hangs off — a corroded connector, a chafed wire or a failed driver in the engine computer produces the same cylinder-specific code as a dead injector, and a noid light in that connector separates them in two minutes. After that, the cheap cause is the coil you may not have swapped yet. In our complaint analysis below, 160 injector complaints quote a P030x misfire code against only 23 quoting a P02xx injector-circuit code: seven to one in favor of a code that names the hole rather than the part in it.
At the shop — what to say:
"Cylinder three, coil and plug already cleared. I want that injector replaced with new seals, and if this engine uses coding, confirm you can code it. I'd rather not do the whole set at this mileage unless the flow test says otherwise."
Route 3 — A leaking injector, treated as urgent
🔴 Who it fits: raw fuel smell, hard hot starting, black smoke, a fuel gauge dropping unusually fast, or an engine oil level that is rising. Cost: $150-$700 for the injector, more if it has already done damage. The catch: this is the one injector fault with consequences beyond drivability.
An injector that leaks or sticks open puts fuel where it should not be, for three separate reasons.
Fuel dilution of the oil. Unburned fuel runs past the rings into the crankcase and thins the oil. A rising level with a fuel smell on the dipstick is the signature, and thinned oil protects bearings poorly — this is the part that outcosts any injector.
A washed cylinder. In severe cases enough fuel pools on the cylinder wall to strip the oil film; a fuel-soaked plug is the visible version.
Fire risk. External leakage at the rail or the injector seal puts fuel on a hot engine. If you can smell fuel in the engine bay, this stops being a scheduling question.
Confirmation is straightforward: a wet plug in one hole, a strong fuel smell, and often a rich fuel-trim reading. If the oil smells of gasoline or the level has climbed, change the oil as part of the repair rather than after it.
The cheap cause first. There is no cheap cause on this route and you should not look for one — but there is a free one, and it is the recall lookup. Fifteen of the twenty federal recall campaigns that name a fuel injector list a fire as the consequence, and the largest of them covers nearly 700,000 vehicles. Run the VIN before you run anything else, because if the campaign covers you, the injector, the rail and the software are all free.
At the shop — what to say:
"I can smell fuel and the oil level has gone up. I want the leaking injector found and replaced, and an oil and filter change afterward because the oil is diluted."
Route 4 — High mileage, replace the set
🟡 Who it fits: past 120,000 miles, or a flow test showing several injectors outside spec. Cost: $400-$700 on a port-injected four, $800-$1,400 on a port V6, $1,000-$3,000 on direct injection. The catch: it feels like the expensive choice and is often the cheaper one.
The economics here are the same as any labor-dominated repair. On a V6 where the intake manifold comes off, three and a half hours of access is being paid whether one injector is replaced or six. Doing six costs the parts difference. Doing one now and another in eight months costs the access twice.
The threshold is evidence, not age alone. Ask for a flow or balance test across all injectors and ask for the numbers rather than a verdict. A set where one injector is dead and the rest flow evenly is a one-injector job at any mileage. A set where the spread between best and worst is significant is a set job even if only one has set a code.
Buy sensibly. Remanufactured injectors from a known supplier, flow-matched as a set, cost well under new OEM and suit a high-mileage engine. Avoid the cheapest unbranded listing: an injector that flows wrong produces the symptom you are trying to cure.
The cheap cause first. The cheap cause at this mileage is the pair of parts almost nobody quotes: sealing rings at $5-$20 each and, where the intake is already off, the spark plugs underneath it. Both are trivial now and cost hours of access later, and a reused hardened seal is the single most common reason an injector job comes back.
Fix it yourself
On port-injected engines with an accessible rail, this is a legitimate weekend job. On direct injection it is not.
Reasonable: a port-injected inline four where the rail sits on top. Relieve the fuel pressure first, disconnect the battery, and replace every O-ring and sealing ring rather than reusing any. Two to three hours, and the parts saving is real because injectors bought directly cost well under shop pricing.
Reasonable on any system: supplying your own parts to an independent shop. Ask before booking; most accept customer-supplied injectors if they are from a known brand.
Not reasonable: any direct-injection system. Those rails hold thousands of psi after shutdown, the high-pressure lines are single-use, the sealing rings must be sized during installation, and coding may be required to finish. The failure mode is fuel spray at pressure onto a hot engine.
Not reasonable: any engine where you cannot relieve fuel pressure properly or do not have the service procedure.
At the shop — what to say:
"The car's at 135,000 miles. Run a flow test on all of them and give me the numbers. If the spread is significant, I'll do the set while the intake is off — and quote the intake gasket and plugs at the same time."
When is replacing the whole set cheaper than replacing one?
Should you replace all the fuel injectors at once? The threshold is roughly 120,000 miles or a documented flow spread across the set, and the reasoning is entirely about access. On an inline four with the rail on top, coming back later is 1 to 2 hours, so replacing one is fine. On a V6 or V8 where the upper intake comes off, 3 to 5 hours plus a gasket are spent regardless of how many injectors change — so doing all six costs the parts alone, while doing them one at a time pays that access three times. Direct injection tilts further toward the set, because the single-use lines and rings are replaced on every visit anyway. So the question is never whether the other injectors are bad; it is how many hours it takes to reach them again. That arithmetic is the question to ask before you are asked to decide in a service lane; PulsCar's free check cannot count injectors for you.
Route 5 — Direct injection, and it is the valves

Cost: $400-$1,000 standalone, $200-$400 bundled with injector work. The catch: it looks exactly like injector failure and it is a completely different repair.
Port injection sprays into the intake port, so the intake valves are washed with detergent-carrying fuel every cycle. Direct injection sprays into the cylinder, so the back of the valve never sees fuel — oil vapor from the crankcase ventilation lands there, bakes onto hot metal, and builds a carbon crust that disrupts airflow.
The symptoms mislead by design: rough cold idle, hesitation on light throttle, a slow loss of power, sometimes misfire codes. All of it reads as fuel delivery, and injectors get replaced on engines where injectors were never the problem.
The repair is mechanical cleaning: walnut shell blasting with the intake off, $400 to $1,000 standalone. Chemical cleaners help mildly and cannot remove established deposits. If injector work is already planned, the intake is coming off anyway and valve cleaning costs $200 to $400 instead.
Prevention is partial: a catch can reduces the vapor reaching the valves, and some manufacturers added port injectors specifically for this reason. Top-tier fuel helps combustion, not the valve side.
The cheap cause first. Here the cheap cause is a borescope look, not a part — a shop with a $40 camera can see the back of an intake valve through the port in fifteen minutes, and that picture decides whether you are buying injectors or a cleaning. Chemical intake cleaners are the other cheap attempt; they help mildly with light deposits and cannot remove an established crust, so treat a bottle as a test rather than a repair.
At the shop — what to say:
"This is a direct-injection engine at 90,000 miles and the injectors tested fine. Have you looked at intake valve carbon with a borescope? If we're cleaning them, do it while the intake is off."
Port or direct injection — and why it triples the price
How do you know whether your engine has direct injection? Three free ways, and the answer changes every number. The badge is the first: GDI, TSI, TFSI, SkyActiv-G, EcoBoost, and most turbo badges since roughly 2015 mean direct injection. The parts catalog for your exact engine is the second — a port injector lists at $40 to $100 while a direct one lists at $150 to $500, and the gap alone tells you which you have. The third is physical: port injectors sit in the intake manifold, while direct ones thread into the cylinder head with a thick high-pressure line to each. Why it matters: direct systems run at 2,000 to 5,000 psi against 40 to 60 for port, so the parts are harder, the lines are single-use, the sealing ring is sized during installation, and some engines need the new injector coded. Reading upward, the pattern is unusually stark: the two cheapest rungs cost less than a tank of fuel, while the difference between the middle and the top is decided by one design choice you did not make and cannot change.
What an injector job actually looks like
Six checkpoints, each a fair question to ask, and each one worth money.
The diagnosis. Ask: "What was tested — flow, balance, or just a code?" A code names a cylinder; only a test names a part.
The cheaper suspects. Ask: "Was the coil swapped and the plug inspected?" On a misfire that comes first, and it is free.
Cleaning. Ask: "Has cleaning been tried, and what changed?" On a deposit-shaped symptom, skipping it needs a reason.
Scope. Ask: "One or the set, and what does the flow spread look like?" Under 100,000 miles with one failure, the set needs justifying.
Seals and lines. Ask: "New sealing rings, and on direct injection the high-pressure line?" Reused seals leak; the line is single-use by design.
Coding. Ask: "Does this engine need injector coding, and do you have the tool?" Finding out later means finishing the job elsewhere.
What 3,792 NHTSA complaints that name a fuel injector show
The prices above come from estimators and shop quotes. This section comes from us. We queried NHTSA's public complaint flat file — 777,040 owner complaints received between 1 January 2015 and 8 September 2026 — for narratives naming a fuel injector, excluding diesel-exhaust-fluid and water injectors and powersports vehicles. The published set is 3,792 complaints. The query, the exclusions and the sample reading are in the method file; the tables are downloadable at the end.
The record treats this as a fire part, not a drivability part. Fire is reported in 2.08% of the set against 1.82% across all 777,040 complaints, while crashes run far below baseline (0.61% against 4.37%) and tows sit level with it (4.98% against 5.11%). Read together, that is a very specific profile: an injector fault rarely puts you in a crash and rarely strands you, but when it goes wrong badly it goes wrong by putting fuel somewhere fuel should not be. Route 3 on this page exists because of exactly that shape.
It is a mid-life fault, not an early one and not a wear-out one. Median odometer reading is 70,344 miles, with quartiles at 40,038 and 105,000 (from the 1,548 complaints carrying a usable reading). That is almost exactly the median across the whole complaint file, which is worth knowing when a service advisor tells you a 60,000-mile car is "due" for injectors: there is no due. Injectors are not a scheduled item, and the distribution here is wide enough that a mileage number alone proves nothing.
The code almost never names the part. Only 23 complaints in the whole set quote a P02xx injector-circuit code. 160 quote a P030x misfire code. Seven misfire codes for every circuit code, in a set of complaints where the owner had already concluded the injectors were at fault. That ratio is the strongest argument on this page for the protocol: a P0303 names cylinder three, and three different parts live in cylinder three. 562 complaints (14.8%) mention a coil or a spark plug in the same narrative, which is people doing the elimination in the right order and writing it down.
Replacement is not always the end of it. 433 complaints (11.4%) say injectors were replaced; 23 of those 433 go on to say the fault returned or was never fixed. That is a small number and we will not dress it up as a rate — it is 23 owners, self-selected, out of a set that only contains people unhappy enough to file — but every one of them is a story about a part bought before a test.
And cleaning is almost invisible in the record. Across all 3,792 complaints, 27 mention injector cleaning, a fuel-system service or an induction service of any kind: 0.71%. The honest reading of that number is not "cleaning does not work." It is that the federal complaint file is a register of expensive disappointments. Nobody writes to the government about a $20 bottle that fixed their car. Which is also why no percentage anywhere on this page claims how often cleaning is enough — the data to support such a claim does not exist, and where you see one quoted elsewhere, it was invented.
What owners said they paid. We collected every dollar figure between $50 and $20,000 that appears in these narratives: 814 figures, median $1,851, quartiles $900 and $4,000, with 70.1% above $1,000. Those are not prices and we do not offer them as prices. They are the amounts people chose to type into a federal safety complaint — sometimes an injector set, sometimes an engine, sometimes a tow and a rental on top — and they skew hard toward the tail. Compare them against the price ladder above and the gap is the whole point of this article: the ladder starts at $10 and the complaint file starts at four figures, because the cheap outcomes never get written down.
Which models fill the injector file, and why
Raw complaint counts are not failure rates. They are not normalized by how many cars are on the road, a model with an open recall collects complaints from owners writing about the recall itself, and nothing below ranks manufacturers by reliability. What the counts do show is where the documented clusters are.
By make: Honda 1,212 — 32.0% of the entire set — then Ford 465, Hyundai 354, Chevrolet 324, BMW 205, GMC 157, Volkswagen 151 and Kia 145.
Honda, and the 2017-2019 turbo cluster. Honda CR-V accounts for 452 complaints (187 of model year 2017, 133 of 2018, 69 of 2019), Accord 282 (193 of them model year 2018), Pilot 220. The CR-V median odometer reading is 70,000 miles and the Accord's is 84,743. Narratives in this cluster read remarkably alike: a check engine light, a flashing light with a misfire code, a stumble or a stall, and a dealer diagnosis of failed injectors. If you own one of these and the car begins to misfire, the useful thing to know is that a great many other owners arrived at the same diagnosis — which is worth raising with the dealer, and worth mentioning if you are asking for goodwill assistance outside the warranty term.
Hyundai's 2.5L, and the clearest "one or the set" evidence anywhere. Hyundai Tucson carries 151 complaints, 122 of them model year 2022, at a median of just 31,344 miles. Owners in this cluster describe the same sequence over and over: one injector replaced under warranty, then another failing months later, then another. Hyundai's own bulletin settles the argument — see the next section.
Ford's 1.5L, and the recall. Ford Escape carries 108 complaints and Bronco Sport 76, and the Bronco Sport alone accounts for 5 of the 79 fire reports in the whole set. This is the population covered by the recall campaigns below, and a meaningful share of these narratives are not failures at all — they are owners writing to say the remedy was not available yet.
What the recalls say: an injector is a fire part
Twenty federal recall campaigns name a fuel injector in the component field or the defect text, covering 1,630,685 potentially affected vehicles. Fifteen of the twenty — 75% — name a fire in the consequence field. Whatever an injector is on a repair estimate, in the federal record it is a fire part.
The Ford 1.5L sequence is the one to know, and it is unusually instructive because you can watch a remedy evolve across four campaigns:
- 22V-859, 18 November 2022, 521,746 vehicles — 2020-2023 Escape and 2021-2023 Bronco Sport with 1.5L engines: "a fuel injector may crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment," and "a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire." The remedy at that point was not new injectors. Dealers were told to "update the engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection and install a drain tube."
- 24V-187, 8 March 2024, 42,652 vehicles — same defect, added population.
- 25V-165, 14 March 2025, 33,576 vehicles "previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 22V-859 or 24V-187."
- 25V-467, 11 July 2025, 694,271 vehicles — the campaign that "expands and replaces" all three. This time the remedy is the parts: "dealers will update the engine control software. In addition, dealers will replace the high-pressure fuel rail assembly and fuel injectors, free of charge," with a software-only interim repair in the meantime and the final remedy anticipated in July 2026.
Three years, four campaigns, software and a drain tube first, and the rail and the injectors in the end. If you own one of these cars, the practical consequence is large: the same repair that would cost four figures out of pocket is being performed at no charge, and vehicles already remedied under the earlier campaigns need the new remedy performed again.
Two more worth knowing. 19V-642 (GM, 6 September 2019, 177,282 vehicles, 2018 Malibu 1.5L turbo) is the mirror image of everything on this page: nothing was wrong with the injectors at all — "an error in the Engine Control Module (ECM) software may result in" disabled fuel injectors, preventing starting or causing a stall. And 22V-245 (Volkswagen, 13 April 2022, 1,382 vehicles) recalled Atlas models whose "long fuel injectors may have been assembled without filters," which may leak fuel. A part that leaves the factory wrong, a computer that switches good parts off, and a part that cracks in service — three different failures wearing the same name on an invoice.
What the bulletins say, and the one that settles "one or the set"
Searching every manufacturer communication summary in the file for injector or injectors returns 1,132 distinct communications. Most are heavy-truck and engine-manufacturer documents (Cummins, Mack, Volvo and Hino together account for a large slice), so the useful subset is the 265 that name a drivability symptom — a misfire, rough idle, hesitation, stall, hard start, long crank or a P03xx code. Of those 265, 104 mention replacement and 52 mention software, reprogramming, calibration or an update.
One of them answers the question this article spends the most words on. Hyundai's bulletin 26-FL-001H, dated January 2026 and titled "GDI fuel injector replacement — misfire DTC(s)," covers 2021-2023 Sonata, Santa Fe, Santa Cruz and Tucson models with the 2.5L GDI Theta III engine. Its description: "Some vehicles equipped with a 2.5L GDI Theta III engine (non-Turbo) may exhibit one or more misfire DTCs due to the GDI fuel injectors leaking internally. This may be caused by internal filter breakage in the injector. Follow the procedure in this TSB to replace all 4 injectors on affected vehicles, using the kit in the Parts Information section." The listed codes are P0300 through P0304, and the warranty operation time is 1.4 hours.
Three things follow from a single document. First, a plain misfire code — not a circuit code — can be an injector, which is why the protocol on this page eliminates the coil and the plug rather than assuming the code is meaningless. Second, when a manufacturer knows the failure mode is internal to the part, its own instruction is the set, not the one: the 122 Tucson owners in our complaint set who had them replaced one at a time were getting a procedure their manufacturer had already superseded. Third, 1.4 hours of labor on a four-cylinder is a useful reality check against a quote built on five.
Should you buy a used car with a known injector problem?
It depends entirely on which of the three situations above the car is in, and the answer ranges from "ignore it" to "walk away."
If there is an open recall, it is close to a non-issue and may be an advantage. A campaign like 25V-467 is repaired free by any dealer, the remedy follows the VIN rather than the owner, and in this case the remedy is a new high-pressure rail and a new set of injectors. Run the VIN, check whether the campaign has been performed and whether a superseding campaign now applies, and buy on the ordinary merits of the car.
If there is a bulletin but no recall, subtract the repair from your offer. A 2.5L Hyundai outside its warranty term is a four-injector kit plus 1.4 hours whenever the misfire appears — knowable, bounded, and a legitimate thing to negotiate with.
If the car has a history of injectors replaced one at a time, read it as a warning about the shop, not only the car. Ask for the invoices. A car that has had the set done properly with new seals is in better shape than one with three separate visits and one injector each time.
Worth buying anyway? Usually, yes, and more confidently than for most drivetrain faults, because an injector is a bolt-on part with a known price rather than an open-ended internal repair. The exceptions are the diesel common-rail systems, where a failed high-pressure pump can send metal debris through the entire fuel system and turn a $1,200 job into a five-figure one, and any car where the seller cannot say whether the misfire was ever properly tested.
Three fuel injector traps
Trap 1 — The injector that was never tested. The situation: rough idle, a general misfire code, no cylinder named. What the shop says: "Your injectors are dirty — a full set is $1,100." What is actually happening: nothing has been tested, and a random misfire more often means fuel pressure, a vacuum leak, or ignition than injectors. Cost versus bill: $10-$200 for cleaning and testing, versus $1,100 for parts. Your protective question: "Can we do a flow test and a cleaning service first, and see the numbers before ordering parts?"
Trap 2 — The carbon problem sold as injectors. The situation: a direct-injection turbo at 85,000 miles with cold-start roughness and hesitation. What the shop says: "Direct injection injectors get dirty — $1,600 for the set." What is actually happening: on this engine type the deposits that matter are usually on the back of the intake valves, where injector replacement does nothing. Cost versus bill: $400-$1,000 for valve cleaning that addresses the real cause, versus $1,600 of parts that do not. Your protective question: "Has anyone borescoped the intake valves before we replace injectors?"
Trap 3 — Reused seals. The situation: one injector replaced, and a fuel smell appears two weeks later. What the shop says: "Must be a second injector going." What is actually happening: the sealing rings on the disturbed injectors were reused and one is now weeping. Seals harden with heat and do not reseat. Cost versus bill: $5-$20 in seals at the time, versus a second visit and a fuel leak. Your protective question: "Are you fitting new seals on every injector you disturb?"
Three fuel injector quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers: each combines details that come up repeatedly in owner reports and shop quotes. They are the three shapes injector quotes take, and recognizing which one you are holding is most of the work.
The one that skipped the cheap steps. A four-figure set quoted off a general misfire code — no flow test, no coil swap, no cleaning. It may be correct, but nobody has established that, and you are paying parts prices for a hypothesis. What to do: order testing and cleaning first, with results in writing, before any parts.
The one that looks high and is correct. Direct injection, single-use lines, sizing rings, coding, three to five hours. It lands near $1,800 and every line is real. What to do: compare a second quote line by line, and ask both shops about bundling valve cleaning while the intake is off.
The one that is incomplete rather than expensive. A direct-injection quote with no line for the high-pressure line or seals. Both are mandatory and single-use, so they were either forgotten or they will appear later. What to do: ask for a revised written estimate including them — how to find an honest mechanic covers the rest of that signal.
Your fuel injector situation right now
"Rough idle and worse fuel economy, no specific code." Spend $20 on cleaner and drive a tank before anything else.
"Cylinder-specific misfire." Swap the coil first, read the plug second, and only then discuss injectors — two of the three suspects cost a fraction of the third and eliminating them is free.
"Fuel smell or the oil level is rising." The urgent version, and the one the recall record is about. Run the VIN, get the leaking injector found now, and change the oil as part of the repair rather than after it.
"Direct injection, gradual roughness, injectors test fine." Ask for a borescope of the intake valves before authorizing parts; carbon there is common past 60,000 miles and imitates fuel delivery precisely.
After the fuel injector repair
Check before you leave. Idle even, light off, no fuel smell in the bay — a faint smell after injector work means a seal, and it is easier to raise in the parking lot than on the phone.
Watch the first tank: if the fault was fuel delivery, economy should recover measurably, and no change suggests an incomplete diagnosis. If a leaking injector was the cause, the oil level should now stay put.
Prevention is unusually cheap. Top-tier fuel, the fuel filter at its interval where one is serviceable, and a quality cleaner once or twice a year — about $40 annually aimed directly at the failure mode behind most injector complaints. On direct injection, put an intake-valve inspection on the agenda at 60,000 to 80,000 miles rather than waiting for symptoms. If hesitation is what brought you here, what else causes it matters, because fuel is one of four systems that produce it.
Your fuel injector plan
In the next 10 minutes. Get the codes read free and note whether a circuit code names a cylinder. If one is named, plan the coil swap. Establish whether your engine is port or direct — that answer changes every number you are quoted.
Today. Put a quality cleaner in a nearly empty tank. Listen to each injector with a screwdriver and compare resistance across them. Smell the dipstick for fuel.
This week. If cleaning changed nothing, book testing rather than replacement — a balance test with the numbers in writing. Get quotes structured as hours, injector count, seals and lines, coding, and compare lines rather than totals. What we could not verify. No public dataset records how often an injector symptom is resolved by cleaning instead of replacement, so this page gives the order and the cost of each step rather than a percentage.
How we built the fuel injector numbers
Figures were cross-checked against RepairPal's public estimator ranges, retail parts pricing from major online suppliers, and published shop pricing surveys, at 2026 independent labor rates of $80-$130 per hour and dealership rates of $150-$200. Port injectors are stated at $40-$100 per part and $150-$350 installed; direct-injection injectors at $150-$500 per part and $350-$700 installed, reflecting operating pressures of 2,000-5,000 psi against 40-60 psi for port systems; diesel common-rail injectors at $500-$1,200 installed. Labor spans 1-2 hours for an accessible inline-four rail to 3-5 hours where the intake manifold is removed, plus $40-$100 for an intake gasket and $40-$120 for single-use high-pressure lines on direct-injection systems. The injector life figures on this page (roughly 80,000-150,000 miles for port and 60,000-120,000 for direct) are estimates from typical service experience, not a manufacturer interval and not a measured failure curve — no such published curve exists. Our own complaint analysis puts the median odometer reading on an injector complaint at 70,344 miles, consistent with those ranges but a record of complaints, not of failures. Intake valve carbon cleaning is stated at $400-$1,000 standalone.
