🚨 The answer in 30 seconds β€” Steady light, car drives normally: a tire is roughly 25 percent low. Slow down, get to air, measure all four with a gauge, fill to the door jamb number. Flashes about a minute at start, then stays on: the system has a fault and may not see a real leak; check pressures by hand until it is repaired. Light plus a thump, flapping, a pull or vibration: pull over now; the tire may be failing.

A steady tire pressure light is not a glitch until proven otherwise. Federal standard FMVSS 138 sets the trigger: the light must come on within 20 minutes once a tire is 25 percent below the pressure printed on the door jamb placard. On a 35 psi placard that is about 26 psi. In most cases the fix is air, set when the tires are cold.

The more useful thing to know is what the light cannot tell you. We read every US recall of a tire pressure warning on passenger vehicles since 2010, and not one was issued because a light came on too often. Almost all were about lights that may stay dark when a tire is low.

What the light is telling you

FMVSS 138 allows either a separate lamp reading TPMS for faults, or one lamp that does both jobs. On the shared lamp, steady means low pressure and flashing then steady means malfunction.

What does a steady tire pressure light mean, and how far can you drive on it? It means at least one tire has dropped to about 25 percent below the pressure on your door jamb placard, the point FMVSS 138 sets for the warning, and the system had up to 20 minutes to tell you. On a 35 psi placard that is roughly 26 psi. Drive gently to the nearest air pump, not to your destination: the owner's manual text the standard requires warns that an under-inflated tire overheats and can fail. Measure all four tires with a gauge, because one tire much lower than the others is a leak, while four tires a few psi low on a cold morning is temperature. If the car pulls, thumps or vibrates, stop and fit the spare. Pulscar's free sound check is for the case the light cannot describe: a new hum or thump that stays after the pressure is right.

The five-minute check

  1. Restart and watch the lamp for 90 seconds. Steady is a pressure warning. Flashing then steady is a system fault.
  2. Walk around the car before touching air. A tire visibly lower than the others, a nail head, a bulge or cords showing changes everything.
  3. Read the placard on the driver's door jamb. Front and rear numbers can differ. Ignore the maximum printed on the sidewall.
  4. Measure all four with a gauge. Tires count as cold after 3 hours parked or less than a mile driven, per Honda and Nissan; Nissan says a hot tire reads 3 to 5 psi high.
  5. Fill each tire to the placard, never below it, and drive a few minutes above 16 mph so direct sensors report. Measure again tomorrow morning: one tire lower again is a leak.

Why it comes on when the tires look fine

Cold. GM's bulletin 07-03-16-004E: "tire pressure will change about 7 kPa (1 psi) for every 6Β°C (10Β°F) decrease in temperature." Nissan's NTB13-088a puts it at about 0.8 psi and adds that tires "naturally decrease by approximately 1.0 - 1.5 psi per month." A tire last set in spring can sit at the warning point on the first cold morning, then warm up on the road so the light goes out while the tire stays low. GM's instruction: "Never set the tire pressure below the placard value regardless of tire temperature or ambient temperature."

A slow leak you cannot see. GM's 08-03-10-006I, for 2026 and prior GM cars and light trucks, traces a tire that "slowly loses air pressure over a period of days or weeks" to corrosion on aluminum wheel bead seats that "will not be visible until the tire is dismounted," and tells technicians "DO NOT replace a wheel for slow air loss" before cleaning and sealing the seat. Infiniti's ITB20-003 covers sensor valve seals on 2014-2020 Q50 and 2017-2020 Q60 models leaking about 1 psi every 3 days. Nissan's rule: "Do Not replace the TPMS/LTPWS sensor assembly for a leak." A spray of soapy water on the valve, the rim edge and the tread shows most of these as growing bubbles.

An indirect system that was not told. Honda has used indirect systems, which estimate pressure from how fast each wheel turns, since the 2013 Accord. Its job aid says calibration must be started "anytime" you adjust pressure, rotate or replace tires, or "the tire pressure calculations are tricked." Honda's A18030D adds that on 2014-2016 CR-Vs a replacement tire with different sidewall construction can switch the light on. On Hondas, calibrating without correcting the pressure does not work: the light comes back within 20 minutes.

A flashing lamp: electronics, not air. GM: if a sensor "does not transmit information for 18 minutes of driving," the light blinks "for about a minute, after which the light will stay on solid." GM designs sensors to last "10 years or 240,000 kilometers (150,000 miles)." Before replacing one, rule out the cheap causes the bulletins name: a spare with no sensor, phone chargers and aftermarket electronics (Nissan), toll transponders, window tint and non-factory valve caps (Stellantis S2422000001 Rev. D), and tire sealant, which GM says is "not compatible" with its sensors.

What 53 tire pressure recalls reveal

Owner complaints and forum threads are full of tire pressure lights that come on for no reason. The federal recall file tells a different story about where the real risk sits, and it is structured enough to count properly.

We took NHTSA's public recall file on 17 September 2026 and pulled every campaign since 2010 whose component is the tire pressure monitoring system, that cites FMVSS 138, or whose defect text mentions a tire pressure warning. We removed trailers, motorhomes, buses and heavy-truck chassis, read all 53 remaining recalls on cars, SUVs, pickups and vans, and classified each by what could go wrong, why, and how it was fixed.

Finding 1: the recalled failure is silence. In 51 of 53 recalls the stated risk is that the driver may not get a correct low-pressure warning. Even the three campaigns about a light that stays on despite correct pressures, Land Rover 14V-618 and Chrysler 14V-632 and 14V-633, were recalled because a constantly lit lamp "could mask an actual low tire pressure condition." No recall in the file was issued for a light that merely comes on too often.

Finding 2: most of it is software. 41 of the 53 were fixed with a software update, recalibration or configuration change, covering 95 percent of the recalled vehicles. Tesla 24V-935 fixed 696,281 cars whose warning "may not remain illuminated between drive cycles" over the air. Volkswagen and Audi 22V-815 updated 296,044 cars whose system might not catch all four tires deflating together. Jeep 26V-559, filed 1 September 2026, updates the radio hub software on 201,976 2024-2026 Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer and related models.

Finding 3: the problem is growing, not shrinking. Campaigns filed from 2022 to September 2026 account for 19 of the 53 recalls but 2,169,485 vehicles, 89 percent of the total. Five of those are instrument panels that can start up without warning lights, including Toyota and Lexus 25V-595 on 591,377 vehicles and Kia 23V-298 on 108,936, where a blank display takes the tire warning with it.

Finding 4: sensor batteries are the rare case. Only two recalls, both on 2022 Dodge Challenger, Charger and Chrysler 300 models, blame sensor batteries: 22V-504 on 52,340 vehicles and 22V-808 on 44,212. Nine more trace to vehicles set up wrong at the factory or before sale, such as Nissan 12V-068, where the system "was not activated" during assembly, and Toyota 11V-148, where accessory wheels fitted before sale were not recalibrated.

Why does it matter that tire pressure recalls are about lights that stay dark? Because a quiet dashboard is the state drivers trust most, and it is the one manufacturers have had to recall. In the 53 recalls on passenger vehicles since 2010 that Pulscar classified, 51 carried the risk that the driver might not get a correct warning, and none was issued because a light came on too often. The practical rule follows directly. Check tire pressure with a gauge once a month and before long trips, whatever the dashboard shows, as the owner's manual text FMVSS 138 requires. Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, because 41 of these fixes were free software updates that only reach cars that come in or connect. And treat a light that has been on for weeks as no warning at all: while it is lit, it cannot tell you about a second tire going down.

Resetting the light

Direct systems, with a sensor in each wheel. Fix the pressure and drive. GM: "It is not necessary to relearn the sensors after correcting the pressure." Relearns are for rotations on cars with different front and rear pressures, new sensors and new wheels, usually with a tool.

Indirect systems. Set all four tires cold to the placard, then calibrate. On 2013-2017 Accord, 2014-2016 CR-V, 2015-2017 Fit and 2016-2017 HR-V, Honda's job aid says to hold the TPMS button until the indicator blinks twice, or use Settings, Vehicle, TPMS Calibration on Display Audio models. Mazda's 02-011/18 uses a TPMS set switch held until the light flashes twice, and says learning takes about 20 minutes of driving.

What never works. A reset without air, and any reset for a flashing lamp. We found no manufacturer document describing a universal reset button, so follow the TPMS section of your owner's manual.

Disabling it. Federal law, 49 USC 30122, says a manufacturer, dealer or repair business "may not knowingly make inoperative" equipment installed to meet a safety standard. Tape over the lamp hides the warning, not the fault.

How much should you pay to fix a tire pressure light, and when should it be free? Most lights cost nothing but air, which is free at Les Schwab and about $1.50 to $5 at a coin machine, and calibrating an indirect Honda or Mazda system is a button press. A puncture repair is $15 at Walmart for non-members and averages $54 to $64 on Kelley Blue Book's estimator. A corroded bead seat is labour, 0.6 hours per wheel in GM's bulletin. The expensive line is a sensor: about $45 to $65 as a part, but $314 to $368 installed on the same estimator. Before paying that, run the VIN: 53 recalls have covered 2.45 million vehicles, and the repair under a recall costs nothing. Replace only the sensor that has stopped reporting, not the set. Method and data

Recalls. NHTSA's recall flat file FLAT_RCL_POST_2010, downloaded September 2026. Included: vehicle campaigns whose component is Tires: pressure monitoring and regulating systems, that cite FMVSS 138, or whose defect description mentions a tire pressure monitoring system or warning. Excluded: 10 campaigns on trailers, motorhomes, buses and heavy-truck chassis. Vehicle counts are the potentially affected population in the manufacturer's report. We read each defect, consequence and remedy text and assigned one outcome, one cause and one remedy type; the classification is published so anyone can disagree with a row.

Limits. A recall is filed when a manufacturer or NHTSA finds a safety defect or non-compliance. It does not measure how often ordinary sensors fail, and a failure that affects few vehicles or is fixed under warranty never appears. The absence of recalls for false alarms reflects how safety law treats them, not how common they are.
