That ordering is the point. The complete noise index sorts by sound, because that is how you find a noise you cannot name. This page sorts by money, because that is what you need when somebody hands you a number. The gap between the two ends of one sound is where every bill here is decided: a rattle under the car is a clamp on a heat shield or a converter at $2,293 to $2,468; a grind at a wheel is $265 of pads or an $890 caliper; a cold-start rattle is a $123 oil change or a $3,940 timing chain. Nothing in the sound tells you which — thirty minutes of somebody's attention does.

How to use this guide

Find your noise, then read its cheap cause that gets skipped paragraph twice — that paragraph decides your bill. Every entry has the same shape: what you notice, the expensive cause with a sourced price, the cheap cause with a sourced price, a confirmation test under thirty minutes, a boundary saying when the entry does not apply to your car, and the sentence to say at the counter.

One rule overrides everything: the price in each heading is the worst this noise can be, not what it probably is. Reading the ranking as a probability is what makes people panic over rattles and ignore hums.

A second follows: a price is worth what its source is worth. Figures we opened name the page; figures that exist only in a search snippet — RepairPal and KBB both refuse automated fetching — say snippet-sourced in the sentence, not in a footnote. Claims marked 🟢 rest on a document listed in Sources; ranges marked ⚪ are shop-price estimates, not measurements from a dataset we own.

First: which kind of noise is this? The 5-minute filter

Engine speed or road speed? The most valuable question in noise diagnosis. Reach the speed where the noise lives, shift to neutral, coast. Pitch holds while the engine drops: road speed — wheels, bearings, tires, driveline. Pitch falls with the engine: engine speed — belts, valvetrain, exhaust, timing, internals. Items 1, 3, 5 and 7 are engine-speed noises; 2, 6, 8 and 10 are road-speed noises. Getting this wrong is how a wheel bearing gets quoted as a transmission.

Continuous or triggered? A trigger is a component list. Only when braking narrows to about five parts; only at full lock, about six; only on cold start, three — and one of the three is normal.

Has it changed? A noise identical for two years is a characteristic; one that is lengthening is a trajectory, and trajectory is the difference between $123 and $3,940 on item 3. Duration and trend beat pitch, and they are what memory holds worst, which is why recording the noise properly beats describing it. Most noises here never set a trouble code; sound diagnosis versus an OBD scanner maps which ones a scanner can see.

The 15-minute protocol, before you spend anything

In order. Nothing costs money and each step removes possibilities.

  1. Check the oil on level ground, engine off. First and sometimes only fix for items 1, 3 and 5.
  2. Start it cold and time the rattle. Two seconds and eight are different items, $3,800 apart.
  3. Blip the throttle in neutral. Follows the revs while standing still: items 1, 3, 5, 7. No change: 2, 6, 8, 10.
  4. At 40 mph, shift to neutral and coast. Pitch held means road speed; pitch fell means engine speed.
  5. Steer gently left, then right, at speed. Louder one way is a wheel bearing, opposite the quieter side.
  6. Brake from 30 mph, then lift off. Stops when you lift: item 8. Continues while coasting: item 10.
  7. Slow figure of eight at full lock. Click at lock is item 6; one clunk per direction change is item 9.
  8. Tap every heat shield and the converter, stone cold. Hollow is a shield; rocks in a can is item 4's ceiling.
  9. Record thirty seconds while it is happening. Phone twelve to eighteen inches away, noise suppression off.
  10. Give a dealer your VIN and ask what campaigns are open. Four of the ten have one, never offered unasked.

Find your situation: eight ways people arrive here

"Something knocks and I am told the engine is finished." → Item 1, and run step 3 first. A knock that does not track engine speed is not rod knock.

"A whine that gets higher the faster I go." → Item 2, then the neutral-coast test.

"It rattles for a few seconds on a cold start." → Item 3, and check the oil tonight.

"A rattle under the car that speeds up when I rev it." → Item 4, and do the tap test before anyone says converter.

What actually determines your number

Whether the cheap cause was tested or assumed. The largest single variable. Each check takes under thirty minutes, and the distance between the two ends of one entry runs from a few hundred dollars to eleven thousand.

Engine speed or road speed. Free to establish, almost never established before the visit, and getting it wrong sends the diagnosis to the wrong half of the car at your expense.

Access, not the part. RepairPal's snippet-sourced wheel bearing estimate is $196 to $247 on a Ford F-150 and $326 to $511 on a Toyota Corolla — the truck is the one where the hub bolts on instead of being pressed in.

How long it has been making the noise. CarMD's 2026 Vehicle Health Index, from 39,116,755 repairs recommended in 2025, has catalytic converter replacement as the most common check-engine repair at $1,510.88, and calls it a failure "triggered by unresolved misfires or failed O2 sensors, or vehicle age."

Whether a program is open on your VIN. Four of the ten. The only factor that takes a four-figure number to zero, and it costs one phone call.

What the car is. A hybrid deletes most of item 2; an electric car deletes items 1, 3, 4, 5 and the expensive end of 7. Where dealer and independent pricing diverges, the dealer comparison guide maps which jobs need factory tooling.

1 · A deep knock at idle that follows engine RPM

The tell. Someone hammering the block from inside through a towel: low, heavy, rhythmic, loudest at idle, often quieter once warm — which means nothing good. The rod rides on a film of pressurised oil; when the film fails, metal hammers the crank journal.

The expensive cause. CarComplaints owners reporting engine failure on the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 report $11,990 at 97,100 miles from three reports; on the 2013 Hyundai Sonata a seized engine is $6,800 at 88,100 miles from thirty-five reports. Sample sizes are stated because three reports and thirty-five deserve different weight.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Three things sound like knocking and none is the crankshaft: a loose heat shield barking up through the firewall (the $380 bill that started this company, fixed with a zip tie), an exhaust manifold leak loudest cold, and low-octane detonation under load. Before any of it, the oil level — an engine down two quarts knocks.

The confirmation test, free. Stationary, in neutral, blip the throttle. If the knock follows engine speed with the wheels still, it is on or in the engine. Then listen from underneath while someone revs: a shield or manifold leak gets louder down there; a rod knock does not.

Where this does not apply. An electric vehicle has no reciprocating assembly and cannot make this noise; on a hybrid the engine stops at rest; and a direct-injection engine ticks loudly at idle by design. The full range of knocks is separated in the engine knocking guide.

At the shop — say this: "Does the knock track RPM in neutral, and were the oil level and pressure recorded? Please run my VIN — there is an active engine recall on some 6.2 litre V8s."

2 · A whine that rises with road speed, not engine RPM

The tell. A jet spooling, or a mosquito that gets angrier with speed — tied to wheel rotation, indifferent to the engine, and on a CVT usually with a shudder at light throttle.

The expensive cause. RepairPal's transmission replacement estimator gives labor $1,112 to $1,632 and parts around $5,053 — snippet-sourced, because that site returns HTTP 403 to automated fetching. Opened owner totals sit lower: CarComplaints reports $3,120 at 56,250 miles from 179 reports for the CVT shudder on the 2013 Nissan Altima.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Fluid, then the calendar. A transmission fluid change is snippet-sourced at $243 to $313 on a Corolla, and degraded CVT fluid produces exactly the whine-and-shudder complaint that gets quoted as a replacement; inside 84 months and 84,000 miles on the covered list the job is $0. Some whines are simply the design: CarComplaints logs 28 complaints about a loud whine from the power steering module on the 2013 Altima at a typical repair cost of $0, the outcome recorded being that the noise is normal because the system is electric.

The confirmation test. At the speed where the whine is clearest, shift to neutral and coast. Pitch unchanged means road speed and you are here; pitch falling means an accessory and you are in item 7.

Where this does not apply. On an electric vehicle a rising whine is the motor and reduction gear, and is normal. A hybrid eCVT has no valve body or clutch pack, so this failure largely does not exist. On a manual, a whine in one gear only is that gear's bearings. At the shop — say this: "The whine holds pitch when I coast in neutral, so it is road speed. I want fluid condition in writing, and the VIN checked against the CVT warranty extension, before we discuss a transmission."

3 · A metallic rattle from the front of the engine on cold start

The tell. Two to eight seconds of rattle after an overnight sit, then silence — a bicycle chain in a biscuit tin. What matters is not pitch but duration, and whether it is growing: one second last winter, five now. Oil drains out of the hydraulic tensioner overnight and the chain slaps its guides until pressure arrives; on an interference engine, a chain that jumps teeth ends the engine.

The expensive cause. RepairPal's timing chain and gear set estimator is snippet-sourced at $1,461 to $1,852 nationally. Opened owner data goes higher: CarComplaints reports $3,940 at 105,900 miles from three reports for tensioner failure on the 2010 Audi A4, and $2,500 at 35,150 miles from 27 reports for "clattering noise when starting car" on the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Oil. The assembly is hydraulic, so low, degraded or wrong-viscosity oil produces this rattle on a mechanically sound engine, at a snippet-sourced $158 to $187 nationally and $123 to $153 on a Corolla. Poor service history is the best single predictor of which cause you have.

The confirmation test. Fresh oil and filter at the exact viscosity, then a week with the duration noted on each cold start. Shorter means that was the repair; unchanged means hardware, and then ask for the chain stretch to be measured or shown to you.

Where this does not apply. No chain of this kind on an electric vehicle; on a hybrid listen at the first start of the day; in a cold climate a longer rattle is partly thicker oil; and on a timing belt engine the failure is silent, which is why belts have an interval. At the shop — say this: "Fresh oil at the exact spec first, then re-check how long the rattle lasts cold. If it is unchanged, I want the chain stretch measured or shown to me before anyone quotes chain and tensioner."

Why does the same car noise get quoted at wildly different prices by different shops? Because a noise names no part at all — unlike a trouble code, which at least names a failed test — so the whole distance between the cheap cause and the expensive one is filled by diagnostic work that not every shop performs. The cold-start rattle is the clearest case here. It costs $123 to $153 when the answer is an oil change on a Corolla and $3,940 when it is a timing chain tensioner on an Audi A4, and the sound in the first two seconds is close to identical. The defence is one sentence and never changes: show me the measurement. A chain stretch figure, a fluid condition, a pad thickness in millimetres. The tell. Felt through the floor more than heard, in two variants: tinny and hollow, worst at idle and gone above 30 mph; or small stones in a coffee can at every speed. A converter is a ceramic honeycomb whose fragments rattle when the substrate breaks up — and around it sit thin heat shields whose spot welds rust through.

The expensive cause. RepairPal's catalytic converter estimator is snippet-sourced at $2,293 to $2,468 nationally, with $1,627 to $1,693 on an F-150. Opened owner data: CarComplaints reports $1,980 at 90,150 miles for converter failure on a 2013 Honda Accord, from one report, and $4,200 at 129,000 miles from two reports for a clogged converter on a 2011 F-150.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A loose heat shield — and here is an honest gap worth naming: no aggregator publishes a price for it. RepairPal has estimator pages for the muffler ($625 to $663 on a Corolla) and the exhaust pipe ($1,241 to $1,299), but searched three times it has none for a heat shield. The fix is usually a clamp and ten minutes, and it is the noise behind the $380 bill that started this company.

The confirmation test. Engine off and stone cold: tap each heat shield with the flat of your hand, then the converter body. A shield answers with a hollow buzz; a broken substrate answers like a can of gravel. Then ask whether a misfire code is stored, because a converter killed by a misfire will die again.

Where this does not apply. An electric vehicle has no exhaust, so under-floor rattles belong in item 9; on a hybrid the converter runs cooler and fails less often; and a sudden jump from quiet to extremely loud is a stolen converter, a police report before it is a repair. At the shop — say this: "Before we price a converter I want the tap test done in front of me on the shields and the converter body, and whether any misfire codes are stored."

5 · A tick that follows engine RPM and gets louder under load

The tell. A rapid tick keeping time with the engine, loudest in the first minutes. Three families make it: an exhaust manifold leak, loudest cold because the crack closes as the iron expands; a valvetrain tick from excess clearance; and injector tick, which on direct injection is loud and normal.

The expensive cause. RepairPal's exhaust manifold gasket estimator is snippet-sourced at $406 to $580 nationally. The ceiling arrives when the manifold bolts shear off in the head: CarComplaints reports $2,400 at 107,000 miles on a 2011 Ford F-150, from one report. A collapsed lifter on a cylinder-deactivation V8 leaves this entry for item 1 — $7,020 at 77,700 miles from three reports on a 2019 Silverado 1500.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Oil level and interval: a ticking top end on a low or overdue charge is common, free to check, and often resolves with a service at a snippet-sourced $158 to $187. The second is not a repair at all — on a direct-injection engine the injector tick is normal and permanent, and it is why owners of healthy engines go hunting for a fault that is not there.

The confirmation test. Listen cold, then fully warm. Loud cold and clearly quieter hot points at the exhaust; unchanged and identical across cylinders points at injectors or normal valvetrain clatter.

Where this does not apply. An electric vehicle has no exhaust or valvetrain, and a diesel clatters at idle by design, so the only useful question there is whether the clatter has changed. At the shop — say this: "Is the tick louder cold and quieter warm? If so, check the exhaust manifold and gasket for a leak before anyone opens a valve cover. And what is the oil level?"

6 · A rhythmic click from a front wheel that appears only when turning

The tell. Low speed, full lock, one click per wheel revolution, gone when straight, and almost always worse turning one way. The boot splits, grease leaves, grit arrives, and the hardened surfaces knock at the joint's greatest angle.

The expensive cause. RepairPal's snippet-sourced estimates put a CV joint at $1,534 to $1,640 on a Honda Pilot and $798 to $924 on a Ford F-150, and an axle shaft at $1,235 to $1,376 on a Silverado 1500. That spread for one repair is the clearest illustration here that you pay for access, not for a part.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A stone wedged in the tread clicks once per revolution and comes out with a screwdriver — common enough, and quoted as a CV joint often enough, to be worth two minutes first. The second is timing: a split boot caught early is a boot job rather than a joint job, and it announces itself as a ring of black grease flung around the wheel arch.

The confirmation test. Empty car park, slow figure of eight at full lock both ways. A click that appears at lock and stops when straight is a CV joint, on the outside of the turn that produces it. Then inspect that boot for splits.

Where this does not apply. A solid-axle truck uses universal joints inside the axle housing, so a click at lock is a U-joint or a locking hub; on a rear-wheel-drive car it is a strut mount or brake hardware, which is item 9. At the shop — say this: "The click only happens at full lock, and only one way. Show me the CV boot on that side before we price an axle — is it split, and has the grease gone?"

How do you tell whether a car noise is urgent or merely annoying, before anyone has looked at it? Urgency and price are different axes, and this list is deliberately sorted on only one of them. Item 8, grinding brakes, has the third-cheapest ceiling here and is the only entry in the triage box, because a stopping distance is not a repair bill. Item 10, a hum, has the lowest ceiling of all and can be driven on for weeks. Item 1 is urgent for a third reason: not danger, but that every mile widens the damage. The practical rule is that a noise which changes what the car does — stopping, steering, holding power — is urgent, while a noise that only changes what the car sounds like is a budgeting decision. 7 · A squeal from the engine bay that survives warm-up

The tell. A squeal that fades within a minute of a cold start is usually a cold belt. A squeal that survives warm-up, or appears the instant you press the air-conditioning button, is this entry; a loud squeal then silence is a compressor seizing.

The expensive cause. RepairPal's snippet-sourced A/C compressor estimates run $1,032 to $1,549 on a Honda Accord and $739 to $978 on a Ford Ranger. Opened owner data agrees: CarComplaints reports $1,020 at 83,850 miles from 16 reports for compressor failure on the 2003 Accord.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The belt and its tensioner, snippet-sourced at $153 to $211 nationally and $116 to $162 on a Tacoma — an order of magnitude below the compressor, and a glazed belt squeals identically. On a large Honda population the compressor itself is free: the shaft-seal extension above runs ten years with no mileage limitation.

The confirmation test. Warm and idling, have somebody switch the air conditioning on and off. A squeal that appears the moment the compressor engages and stops when it disengages is the compressor's load, not the belt's condition.

Where this does not apply. An electric vehicle has an electric compressor and usually no accessory belt, and many hybrids use one too, which breaks the test. In a cold climate, a brief squeal on the first freezing start is normal. Start-up squeals are catalogued in car squealing when starting, with parts in serpentine belt and A/C compressor replacement cost.

Fix it yourself — a real one. A serpentine belt on an engine with an accessible automatic tensioner is a genuine driveway job: the cheap end above in parts, a breaker bar, twenty minutes. The honest limit: photograph the routing first, because rerouting from memory is how people drive the water pump backwards; stop if the engine uses a stretch-fit belt with no tensioner.

At the shop — say this: "Does the squeal start and stop with the A/C clutch engaging? If so, test the compressor for drag before replacing a belt, and run my VIN against the A/C compressor warranty extension."

8 · Grinding when you brake

The tell. Grinding, scraping, sometimes shrieking, and only while the pedal is down. Distinguish it from the wear indicator's squeal, a metal tab designed to say pads soon; grinding says pads now. Once the friction material is gone the backing plate rides the rotor — and if a caliper slide pin has seized, one pad did all the work.

The expensive cause. RepairPal's snippet-sourced caliper estimate is $890 to $960 nationally, $472 to $540 on a Ford Escape and $1,002 to $1,070 on an Audi A4; rotors add labor of $168 to $247 and parts of $403 to $448. CarComplaints reports $530 at 29,050 miles from six reports for grinding brakes on a 2013 Ford Escape, where every owner replaced rotors and pads.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Pads alone, caught in time: RepairPal's snippet-sourced pad estimate is $331 to $390 nationally and $265 to $322 on a Civic or CR-V. There is also a free cause — a stone trapped between rotor and dust shield grinds convincingly and comes out with a screwdriver. The distance between $265 of pads and $890 of caliper is weeks of driving.

The confirmation test. Lift off the brake while the noise is happening: if it stops it is brakes, if it continues while coasting it is a bearing, item 10. Then ask for pad thickness in millimetres, per corner, written down — uneven inner-to-outer wear on one wheel is the fingerprint of a seizing caliper.

Where this does not apply. On an electric vehicle or hybrid regeneration does most of the slowing, so pads last far longer — but the same physics lets discs scrape from rust rather than wear, and in a cold climate a light scrape on the first few stops is surface rust. The braking ladder is in grinding noise when braking, the non-braking grinds in car makes grinding noise.

At the shop — say this: "I want pad thickness in millimetres for all four corners and rotor thickness against minimum, in writing. If the inner and outer pads on one wheel differ, check the caliper slides first."

Which car noises should you never ignore, even when the car drives normally? Three, and only one is expensive on its own. Continuous metal-on-metal grinding under the pedal means the friction material is gone and stopping distances are already longer than you think — item 8, the only entry that belongs in an emergency triage box. A deep knock that tracks engine RPM means a bearing is hammering a crankshaft, and the gap between catching it today and catching it in a fortnight is often the gap between a repairable engine and a replacement one. And a cold-start rattle lengthening month over month ends, on an interference engine, with valves meeting pistons. The tell. One clunk per bump, from one corner, felt as much as heard; worse over sharp edges, often first on cold mornings. Every joint in the front suspension is a controlled amount of play held in rubber, and when the rubber perishes the parts knock — stabilizer links first, then bushings, ball joints and strut mounts.

The expensive cause. RepairPal's snippet-sourced control arm estimates run $451 to $508 on a Honda Fit and $595 to $693 on a Chevrolet Trailblazer, with an outlier at $2,527 to $2,584 on a Hyundai Genesis. A suspension ball joint is snippet-sourced at $312 to $456 nationally — an hour of somebody's time and a hundred dollars of steel.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Stabilizer bar links, at a snippet-sourced $127 to $183 nationally. They are the cheapest part on the corner and make by far the loudest noise when they wear; a shop that quotes control arms without checking them for play has skipped the cheapest answer. The second is a corroded exhaust hanger letting the pipe swing into the underbody.

The confirmation test. On level ground, engine off, grab each stabilizer link and try to move it — free play or knocking is your noise. Then ask for inspection findings per part, each with a pass or fail, rather than a bundle.

Where this does not apply. On a solid-axle truck the parts are different — track bar, drag link, steering damper — and on the Wrangler and Gladiator population above that damper is covered to eight years or 90,000 miles under XF1. On an electric vehicle the extra mass wears links faster. A clunk only when shifting into gear is a mount, priced in engine mount replacement cost; the clunks themselves are separated in car makes clunking noise.

Fix it yourself — the small end only. Stabilizer links on a car with reasonable access are a realistic first job: two nuts and a wrench. The honest limit: never get under a car held only by a jack, and stop at anything involving a coil spring — a compressed spring stores enough energy to kill.

At the shop — say this: "Check the stabilizer bar links for play before we discuss control arms, and give me a per-part pass or fail rather than one bundled number."

The tell. A hum most noticeable on smooth road at a steady 40 to 50 mph: an aeroplane cabin, endless grooved pavement. When a bearing's seal fails the rolling elements skid rather than roll — and because it is loudest when that bearing is most loaded, the sound changes with the load you apply through the steering.

The expensive cause. RepairPal's snippet-sourced wheel bearing estimate is $346 to $504 nationally, with $326 to $511 on a Toyota Corolla and $196 to $247 on a Ford F-150 — the truck being cheapest is the tell that this is an access price.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Tires. A cupped or unevenly worn tire hums exactly like a bearing, and on cars that have skipped rotations it is the cause more often than the bearing is. A tire rotation is snippet-sourced at $49 to $72. Rotating front to back and re-driving the same road is near-free: if the hum moves to the back of the car, it was never a bearing.

The confirmation test. At a steady 40 mph on an empty road, steer gently left and hold, then gently right. Louder one way and quieter the other is a wheel bearing, on the side opposite the direction that makes it quieter. Identical both ways: look at the tires.

Where this does not apply. On an electric vehicle nothing masks tire and bearing noise; in winter, snow and all-terrain tires hum by design; and on a high-mileage economy car, a hum that does not change with steering is usually the whole set of tires. Hums are separated from whines in car making humming noise, and the job priced in wheel bearing replacement cost.

At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I load the car through the steering at 40 mph. Before we replace a hub, rotate the tires and check the wear pattern, then confirm the bearing off the ground."

Two rows there invert the guide rather than adjusting it. Electric vehicle owners should read the ranking backwards: the five most expensive entries are engine and exhaust failures their car cannot have, so the realistic worst case is item 6 at $1,640 rather than item 1 at $11,990. Solid-axle truck owners should note that two entries name the wrong part for their vehicle: a click at full lock is a U-joint or a hub, and a front-end clunk points at the track bar and damper, one of which carries a documented eight-year program.

What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 — the reproduction. "Did the car make the noise for you, and in what conditions?" A noise never reproduced was never diagnosed; if they could not, offer your recording.

Checkpoint 2 — engine speed or road speed. "Is this tied to RPM or to wheel rotation?" If the paperwork implies one and your coast test showed the other, resolve it before anything is ordered.

Checkpoint 3 — the diagnostic fee and the credit. "What is the charge, and does it come off the repair?" RepairPal's snippet-sourced figure is $122 to $179 on common models.

Checkpoint 4 — the cheap cause, named and ruled out. "Was it ruled out, and how?" Oil before timing parts. Links before control arms. Tires before bearings. Tap test before a converter.

Checkpoint 5 — the measurement. "Can you show me?" Millimetres of pad, rotor against minimum, play demonstrated by hand, a tap test done in front of you.

Checkpoint 6 — the ceiling and the campaign. "Call me before anything over this amount — and has my VIN been run for open campaigns?" If it goes wrong, how to dispute a repair bill covers what a written estimate is worth.

Three diagnostic traps that cost the most

Trap 1: the rattle that becomes a converter. The situation: a rattle under the floor past 100,000 miles, rising with engine speed. What the shop says: "Cat's breaking up inside. Around $2,400." What is really happening: the shields are bolted around the converter, so both sound similar through the floor; the tap test separates them in ninety seconds. Price versus bill: a clamp and ten minutes against RepairPal's snippet-sourced $2,293 to $2,468. Your protective question: "Can you do the tap test on the shields and the converter body with me standing there?"

Trap 2: the hum that becomes a hub. The situation: a drone at 40 mph on a car whose tires have not been rotated in a long time. What the shop says: "Front wheel bearing. We'll do the hub assembly." What is really happening: cupped tires hum exactly like a bearing, and the steering-load test was never performed. Price versus bill: a rotation at a snippet-sourced $49 to $72 against a hub at $326 to $511 on a Corolla. Your protective question: "Does the noise change when you load it through the steering at 40 mph, and what is the tire wear pattern?"

Trap 3: the cold-start rattle that becomes a timing chain. The situation: three seconds of rattle on the first start of the day, irregular oil-change history. What the shop says: "Chain, tensioner and guides. Call it two thousand." What is really happening: the tensioner is hydraulic, and old or wrong-viscosity oil produces this rattle on a healthy chain. Price versus bill: an oil change at a snippet-sourced $123 to $187 against $1,461 to $1,852 nationally, and $3,940 on the opened Audi A4 data. Your protective question: "Fresh oil first, then re-check. If it is unchanged, show me the chain stretch measured rather than inferred."

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and arithmetic are typical of the pattern each noise produces, assembled so the numbers are visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story, and every figure in them is a sourced number from this guide.

Scenario 1 — the $2,400 converter that can be a clamp. A rattle under the floor at 118,000 miles, quoted against RepairPal's snippet-sourced $2,293 to $2,468. Ask for the tap test before the part and the outcome splits: a hollow answer from a shield is a clamp, a gravel answer from the converter body is the converter — and the second raises the question of what killed it, because CarMD describes converter failure as usually triggered by unresolved misfires rather than age alone. Lesson: the cheapest and most expensive causes are bolted to each other, which is why the test has to happen before the quote.

Scenario 2 — the $6,685 transmission that can be $313. A whine at 74,000 miles on a CVT with no fluid service in its history, quoted against RepairPal's snippet-sourced labor of $1,112 to $1,632 plus parts around $5,053. Ask for the coast test and the fluid condition in writing and two cheaper branches open: a fluid service at $243 to $313 on the Corolla estimate, and — inside 84 months and 84,000 miles on the covered list — a $0 repair under the Nissan extension. Lesson: two free questions, the coast test and the VIN check, each of which can take four figures off the bill.

Scenario 3 — the $890 caliper that can be $265. A squeal at 41,000 miles that becomes a grind over six weeks, quoted as caliper, rotors and pads. Ask for pad thickness per corner in millimetres and the arithmetic decides: even wear means pads alone at a snippet-sourced $265 to $322 on a Civic, while a large inner-to-outer difference means the slides seized and the $890 to $960 band is honest. Lesson: the six weeks between the squeal and the grind is the entire price difference, and the squeal is a warning the car issues on purpose.

Should you buy an extended warranty for these noises?

It is the question people ask right after reading a list like this, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a pitch in either direction.

Start with what a service contract will not cover. Vehicle service contracts are built around a distinction between a failure and wear, and wear items are excluded almost universally — pads, rotors, tires, belts, and in many contracts bushings and stabilizer links too. That deletes the cheap end of items 7, 8, 9 and 10 in one line of small print. What is left is the expensive half: the internal engine of item 1, the transmission of item 2, the timing components of item 3, the compressor of item 7.

Then read what you already have for free, because it is more than most owners think. Four of the ten noises have a named program behind at least one cause:

  • NHTSA recall 25V274 covers 597,571 GM vehicles from 2021 to 2024 with the 6.2L V8 for connecting-rod and crankshaft defects; dealers repair or replace the engine free of charge. Item 1's ceiling, at zero.
  • American Honda's extension of 19 May 2023 takes the A/C compressor shaft seal from three years to ten, with no mileage limitation, on 2016–2021 Civic and 2017–2022 CR-V. Item 7's ceiling, at zero.
  • FCA bulletin 23-079-23 carries the XF1 extension to eight years or 90,000 miles for the steering damper on 2018–2020 Wrangler and 2020 Gladiator. Part of item 9, at zero.
  • Nissan's CVT extension moves coverage from 60 months and 60,000 miles to 84 months and 84,000 miles across a large Rogue, Pathfinder, Altima and Sentra population. Item 2's ceiling, at zero.

Add the federal emission warranty, which covers specified major emission components — catalytic converters among them — for eight years or 80,000 miles. That is item 4's ceiling, at zero, for cars still inside it.

So the honest arithmetic runs like this. Before buying coverage, check four free things: your VIN against open campaigns, your in-service date against any extension, your odometer against the federal emission warranty, and the remaining term of your powertrain warranty. One phone call covers the ceilings of four of these ten noises.

And the coverage never worth buying is coverage for the noise you already have. Every contract excludes pre-existing conditions, and a noise that started before the contract did is the definition of one. Your situation right now: four playbooks

"I have a quote in my hand." Find the noise above, read its cheap-cause paragraph, say its script word for word, and ask whether the noise was reproduced. Do not authorise anything over a few hundred dollars in the conversation in which you first heard the number.

"The noise is new and the car feels normal." Run the protocol in order. Fifteen minutes, no money, and ten items narrow to one or two.

"It grinds when I brake." Stop reading and deal with it. The difference between this week and next month is $265 of pads versus a caliper at $890 to $960.

"Several noises at once on an older car." Do not accept one bundled number: a hum, a clunk and a squeal are usually three separate cheap parts. Ask for each on its own line, then order them yourself, cheapest confirmation first.

After the repair: verify before you celebrate

Re-record from the same position. Thirty seconds before and after — the cheapest proof of repair that exists, and the strongest position you can hold if it returns inside a parts warranty. The recording protocol makes the two files comparable.

Verify in the condition that produced it. A brake job at the speed where the grind lived; a bearing with the steering-load test; a cold-start rattle on the next genuinely cold start, not a warm restart in the workshop yard.

Keep the invoice with part numbers. Most parts carry twelve or twenty-four months of coverage, and the commonest reason owners fail to claim is a lost receipt.

Ask for the old parts back. A grooved rotor and a pad worn unevenly across its face tell the story you were told, or they do not.

Prevent the repeats. Oil at the manufacturer's interval prevents items 1, 3 and 5 outright; tire rotation on schedule prevents most of item 10 and much of item 8; transmission fluid on a real interval rather than "lifetime" is the cheapest insurance against item 2.

Your action plan: 10 minutes, today, this week

Next 10 minutes — free:

  1. Check the oil level and colour. Two of the three most expensive noises here have that as their first step.
  2. Blip the throttle in neutral and note whether the noise follows the engine.
  3. Write down when the noise appears — cold start, braking, turning, over bumps, at 40 mph.
