🚨 60-Second TriageTick plus low oil pressure, a P0016 code, or an engine that gets hard to crank when hot: stop driving and have it collected. GM bulletin 23-NA-170 calls the hot-lock-then-cold-restart pattern "a sign of an early bearing failure." 6.2L V8, 2021-2024, deep knock under load: run the VIN against recall 25V-274 first — free across 597,571 vehicles. Tick only on a cold start that clears within minutes: bulletin 19-NA-218 says a tick gone after 5 to 7 minutes means the truck goes back to the customer. Steady tick on a warm 5.3: no recall covers that engine — get the misfire code and the pushrod inspection before anyone quotes an engine.

There are two Silverado ticking stories, and mixing them up is the most expensive mistake an owner makes.

The first is a safety recall. NHTSA 25V-274, filed by GM on April 24, 2025, covers 597,571 vehicles across eight Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac models, and it is limited to one engine: the 6.2L V8, RPO L87, built between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. Of those, 107,244 are Silverado 1500 and 153,637 are Sierra 1500. Connecting rods and crankshafts with manufacturing defects. Free.

The second is the 5.3, the engine in most Silverados on the road, and the one with the reputation for a typewriter tick from a collapsed cylinder-deactivation lifter. It is in no engine recall, and no live GM special coverage. It is a diagnostic bulletin and an invoice.

By the end you will know which of the two you have, what the dealer's inspection actually measures, which document pays and which only instructs, and the sentence that separates a $0 repair from a five-figure one. Claims marked 🟢 rest on a numbered document in the Sources block; ⚪ marks an estimate.

How to use this guide

Start with the engine, not the noise. Every question below forks on one fact — 6.2 or 5.3, L87 or L84 — because that fact decides whether a document exists that makes GM pay. The engine RPO is on the service parts label in the glovebox. Five routes follow, each with who it fits, what it costs, the catch, the cheap cause that gets skipped, and the sentence to say at the counter.

One rule overrides everything: a tick that follows engine speed and survives a warm-up is a valvetrain question; a knock that deepens under load is a bottom-end question — and only the second has a recall behind it. GM's own diagnostic bulletin draws the same line, and it is the line the money sits on.

First: is it a tick, or is it a knock?

Owners use the two words interchangeably. GM does not, and neither does the paperwork.

A tick is top end. Light, fast, metallic, following engine speed exactly — rev it and the tick speeds up in lockstep — and usually not growing under load. Lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, injectors and exhaust manifold leaks live here.

A knock is bottom end. Deeper, a thud rather than a click. It worsens under load — a hill, a trailer, acceleration from a roll — and can go quiet at light throttle. Rod bearings and crankshaft live here, and this is what 25V-274 is about.

The professional test. GM bulletin PIP5832A, covering 2019-2024 Silverado and Sierra with the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87, has the technician cancel cylinders one at a time with Cylinder Power Balance. Its conclusion is the sentence to remember: "Noises that are noticeably affected by cylinder cancellation are typically considered a 'lower end noise' (connecting rod bearing, wrist pin etc.) whereas valvetrain noises aren't generally impacted by this procedure." 🟢 The knocking guide and the ticking guide split the families further.

The 12-minute driveway protocol

It costs nothing and it decides your route.

  1. Start it cold after an overnight soak. Record thirty seconds from the driver's door, then thirty with the hood open. Every later conversation gets compared to this.
  2. Idle it and watch the clock. A tick gone by 5 to 7 minutes is the one 19-NA-218 tells the dealer to hand back.
  3. Rev gently to about 2,000 rpm. Tick rate rising with engine speed is valvetrain. A noise that deepens instead is knock territory.
  4. Load it — a gentle hill in a high gear. A noise that appears under load and eases when you lift is bottom end: the recall symptom, not the lifter one.
  5. Read oil level and oil pressure, cold and warm. Low pressure alongside a noise ends the protocol. Go to Route 5.
  6. Scan for codes with any $25 reader. P0016 is the recall bulletin's stop sign; a cylinder-specific misfire points at the lifter side.
  7. Read the engine RPO, then run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. L87 is the 6.2 in the recall, L84 the 2019-onward 5.3, L83 and L86 the 2014-2018 AFM engines, L3B the 2.7 turbo four.

What actually determines your number

Which engine is in it. Bigger than mileage, bigger than trim. The 6.2 L87 has a recall, an expired lifter-bore programme, a special coverage and two open federal investigations attached to it. The 5.3 has diagnostic bulletins and nothing else.

Whether the VIN falls inside the recall window. 25V-274 is defined by build date, not model year: March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024. Same badge, different document.

Whether the camshaft is still good. The whole spread on a lifter job. Caught early it is lifters and gaskets; driven on, the lobe goes, metal circulates, and it becomes a camshaft, a cleanup and often an engine.

Which code is stored. P0016 sends a 6.2 straight to engine replacement with no test at all; a cylinder-specific misfire on a 5.3 sends you to a pushrod inspection.

Dealer versus independent. Recall and coverage work must go to a GM dealer; nobody else can close it in the warranty system. Route 2 work can go to a good independent, typically 30-50% cheaper on labour, and this job is nearly all labour. The full comparison maps which jobs go where.

How long you drive on it. The only variable you fully control, and the one with the largest coefficient in every figure here.

Read it from the bottom up. The bottom two lines are what people pay when a noise was ignored, and the defence sits in the free block at the top: on a 6.2 the VIN lookup, on a 5.3 the clock and the code.

Two rows invert the guide. A 2021-2024 6.2 inside the window is the only truck whose most expensive imaginable failure is currently the cheapest line on the list. A 2019 or 2020 6.2 sits in the worst position: same engine family, same complaints, a build date on the wrong side of a line drawn in a Part 573 report.

The tell. Ten to sixty seconds of light metallic ticking on the first start of the day, fading as oil pressure builds.

What it actually is. 19-NA-218's cause statement is one sentence: "This condition may be caused by a lifter not having a sufficient amount of oil during cold start operation (not pumped up)." Oil drains out of some lifters overnight; until they refill, the clearance is audible. 🟢

The threshold, in GM's own words. Sit overnight, start, listen — and "If a tick noise is NOT present after running engine for at least 5 to 7 minutes, release the vehicle back to the customer." The manufacturer's written instruction, not a shop dodging you.

On a 2025 or 2026 truck with the 2.7, it is a different part. PIP6101, February 2026, covers the 2.7L L3B: "Top End Ticking Noise," caused by "Manufacturing debris inside the Stationary Hydraulic Lash Adjuster (SHLA) and not allowing it to pump up with oil." The correction is to press each adjuster by hand and replace the soft ones — not lifters, not a camshaft. 🟢

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Oil grade and level. On a 6.2 that has had the recall inspection the grade changed permanently — 25-NA-339 says "the engine must use 0W40 dexosR oil products for all future oil change services" — so a quick-lube refilling it with 0W-20 changed the variable most likely to affect a cold tick. Fix it yourself — the timing, not the repair. Phone on the fender, cold start, ten minutes recorded with a timer visible. You now own the measurement this route turns on. The honest limit: you are timing a symptom, not diagnosing a lifter. Still ticking at minute eight means Route 2.

At the shop — say this: "Please run the cold-start procedure in bulletin 19-NA-218 — overnight soak, start, listen for 5 to 7 minutes — and write on the repair order whether the tick was still present at the end. If it was, I want the cylinder isolated and the pushrods inspected before anyone quotes parts."

Route 2 · Steady warm tick on the 5.3 — the lifter route with no recall behind it

The tell. A rhythmic tick owners describe as a typewriter, tracking engine speed, still there when fully hot, usually with a rough idle and a misfire code naming a cylinder.

What it actually is. The cylinder-deactivation lifters collapse on purpose to shut a cylinder down. GM's cause list in 15-06-01-002O names an "Active fuel management (AFM) lifter that is mechanically collapsed and/or stuck all of the time" and "Internal locking pin damage in the lifter, due to oil aeration." 🟢

The sentence that protects you from an engine quote. The same bulletin tells technicians to replace camshaft and lifters where worn, and adds: "It is not necessary to replace the engine assembly." Owners get quoted engines for this constantly. 🟢

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The code, read before anything is opened, and the pushrod: 19-NA-218 isolates the cylinder, then "inspect for a bent pushrod and/or collapsed lifter." That needs a valve cover off, not a cylinder head. An exhaust manifold leak makes a similar tick for a fraction of the money — the rattling guide covers the cheap impostors.

What was covered, and when it ended. Exactly one GM programme in NHTSA's database mentions lifters: N232413430, "Oversized Lifter Bores," April 2024, for 2023 model year 6.2L L87 only, "in effect until May 31, 2026." It has closed, and it never covered a 5.3. 🟢

Fix it yourself — the isolation, not the repair. Pull the valve cover on the suspect bank and check the pushrods against a straight edge; a bend is visible without tools. The honest limit: replacing lifters means removing a cylinder head, and 19-NA-218 adds a rule people miss — "Any time a valve lifter is replaced, the valve lifter guide must also be replaced."

At the shop — say this: "Which cylinder is it, and was the noise isolated with Cylinder Power Balance rather than the Cylinder Deactivation function? PIP5832A says the deactivation function can make a lower-end noise look like a lifter. I want the pushrod and camshaft lobe condition in writing before we talk about parts."

The tell. The Part 573 report lists the warning signs in GM's own order: "knocking, banging, or other unusual engine noises," a check-engine light, and "engine-performance issues, including hesitation, high RPMs, abnormal shifting, reduced propulsion, or a no-start."

What it actually is. Two root causes from teardown, both "attributable to supplier manufacturing and quality issues: (1) rod-bearing damage from sediment on connecting rods and crankshaft-oil galleries; and (2) out of specification crankshaft dimensions and surface finish." Estimated percentage with the defect: 3%. GM counted 28,102 US field complaints, 14,332 alleging loss of propulsion, and had closed three earlier internal investigations into this condition before NHTSA opened PE25-001. 🟢

What the inspection actually is, and this surprises people. It is an acoustic test. N252494000 has the technician bolt a test sensor into an unused M8 boss on the left of the block — "DO NOT USE THE FACTORY KNOCK SENSOR, OR THE FACTORY KNOCK SENSOR LOCATION" — and feed it into Channel B of a PicoScope. The software raises the engine to 2,000 rpm, waits for oil to reach 90 degrees Celsius, records a waveform and returns PASS or FAIL, at 0.9 hours of labour. GM diagnoses this engine by listening to it. 🟢 The step before it matters too: a vehicle with "a P0016 code, or is not operable" goes straight to engine replacement. An audible rod knock does not get tested. It gets an engine.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The VIN lookup — and asking whether you already paid, since the owner letter carries a reimbursement form for repairs "completed prior to this mailing."

Where this does not apply. The report is explicit: "Vehicles outside of this window and vehicles equipped with other engines are not included in this recall." The 5.3 is not in it in any model year, nor is the 2.7, the 4.3 or the 6.6 L8T, and a 2021 truck built in February 2021 is outside it. A top-end tick on a 6.2 is not this either — see Route 4.

At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against recall 25V-274 and tell me which of the three bulletins it falls under. If it is N252494000, I want the PicoScope result — pass or fail — printed on the repair order with the warranty claim code."

Which Chevy Silverado engine noises does GM actually pay for, and which are yours? Two answers, decided by engine rather than by argument. A knock on a 6.2L V8 built between March 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024 falls inside recall 25V-274, which covers 597,571 vehicles including 107,244 Silverado 1500 trucks, and the remedy — inspection and, where the engine fails it, replacement — is free regardless of mileage or ownership. A tick on the 5.3 falls outside every recall GM has issued; the only documents for it are diagnostic bulletins such as 15-06-01-002O, which tell a technician how to repair the condition but promise nobody will pay. Route 4 · The recall was done, it "passed", and the noise is still there

read the exclusions

The tell. The repair order says the inspection passed, the truck got 0W-40 and a new cap, and the noise is unchanged — or a noise arrived after routine recall work.

What "passed" means, precisely. A waveform did not show the signature the software looks for. Not a bearing measurement, not a teardown. The first version of the remedy was thinner still: bulletin N252494001, April 2025, had a service procedure reading in full "Inspect/Check for DTC P0016. If DTC P0016 is NOT SET, continue to step 2" — then 0W-40 and a cap, 0.5 hours. For a period, the recall's "inspection" was a code check. 🟢

What NHTSA found when it tested the remedy. ODI opened Recall Query RQ26-001 on January 16, 2026 "to assess the remedy effectiveness of Recall 25V-274," and recorded "499 complaints alleging post-remedy engine failure... 473 of which involved an oil viscosity change and 26 a complete engine replacement. GM reported receiving 6,953 complaints of post-remedy engine failure." It closed on August 20, 2026 into Engineering Analysis EA26-005, population 997,743, still open. 🟢

What you are owed now. Special Coverage N252494003 covers engine failure from this condition "for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership."

Two GM documents describe that coverage differently, and the difference is worth money. The owner letter for 25V-274 promises that within "10 years from the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, your engine will be repaired or replaced at no charge" — and then adds that "the terms of your vehicle's powertrain warranty govern your vehicle's coverage for engine failure" and that failures "outside of your vehicle's powertrain warranty are not covered under this special coverage program." Read literally, the second sentence cancels the first: the powertrain warranty on these trucks runs five years or 60,000 miles. The dealer bulletin carries no such caveat. If anyone quotes the letter's second sentence at you, ask for the claim to be written against bulletin N252494003 by number, and ask for the refusal in writing.

The two exclusions, in the bulletin's own words. A vehicle "showing signs of neglect such as low/no oil level, has been hydrolocked, etc" is not covered. And the decisive one for ticking owners: "If the vehicle has a valvetrain or other top end issue, it is NOT COVERED under this special coverage." A 6.2 with a lifter tick rather than a rod knock is in Route 2 economics even though it is the recall engine. 🟢 Our warranty extensions guide covers why coverage carries deadlines and recalls do not.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Re-running the test, because a pass is a snapshot of one morning while the coverage is written around the condition. Read the engine build sticker at the rear of the left-hand cylinder head too: N252494000 clears engines built after "day 153 or 6-1-2024," while the earlier N252494002 used 24183. One date has already passed — reimbursement for previously paid repairs was due "prior to or by May 31, 2026."

At the shop — say this: "This VIN was closed out under the recall and the noise is still present. Please open it under special coverage N252494003, re-run the L87 PicoScope test as that bulletin instructs, and print the result. If the finding is a top-end concern rather than a bottom-end one, say so on the order — the two are covered differently."

Route 5 · Tick with low oil pressure, a P0016, or a hot no-crank — stop driving

The tell, and it is a strange one worth memorising. 23-NA-170: "Engine may also exhibit a condition of stalling or being hard to rotate once at operating temperature... upon engine cooling down to ambient temperature the engine may refire and run normally. This can be a sign of an early bearing failure." A truck that will not crank in a hot car park and starts perfectly next morning has not fixed itself. 🟢

What it actually is. Bearing material has worn far enough that clearances close up at temperature. The bulletin's diagnostic: "Inspect the engine oil and filter for excessive metal debris, specifically bearing material," then drop the pan. One caveat: "If the engine has not had its first oil change it is possible to see some light glitter in the oil," which can be build debris.

Why P0016 ends the argument on a 6.2. N252494000's first service step sends a vehicle with a P0016 code, or one that is not operable, directly to engine replacement.

The cheap cause that gets skipped, and here it is a decision rather than a part. Towing. It costs a fraction of the difference between the repair you have now and the one you will have in a hundred miles. GM's FAQ says the failure "has no impact on braking operation and does not cause an abrupt vehicle stop, allowing the driver to coast down and maneuver safely to the side of the road" — reassurance about the moment of failure, not permission to drive toward it. The stalling guide covers other causes of sudden power loss.

At the shop — say this: "It locked up hot and restarted cold. Please follow 23-NA-170: cut the filter, inspect the oil for bearing material, drop the pan if you find it. If this is a 6.2 inside 25V-274, check the VIN before you charge me for the diagnosis."

Should you delete or disable AFM and DFM? The honest answer

What they are. Bulletin 20-NA-038 defines both. AFM deactivates a fixed set of cylinders — 1, 7, 6 and 4 on a V8. DFM, on the L84 and L87, "can deactivate the lifter on any cylinder at any time." Both work by collapsing a special lifter, and that lifter is the part that fails.

If the engine is already apart, deleting the system during a lifter and camshaft repair removes the failure mode. You are paying for the top-end job either way; the delta is parts and a tune. This is the only case where the arithmetic is clearly favourable.

If the engine is healthy, a plug-in disabler that holds V8 mode is cheap and reversible, but it removes no hardware and owners still report lifter failures with one fitted. Reduced exposure, not insurance.

If it is a 6.2 inside the recall or the coverage, think hard. Neither the recall bulletins nor N252494003 mention aftermarket modification, so this guide will not claim they void anything. But the coverage excludes "valvetrain or other top end issue" by name, and a modified valvetrain is the last thing to be arguing about with a 10-year, 150,000-mile coverage on the table. Close the recall out first.

How do you tell a Silverado lifter tick from a rod knock without taking anything apart? Use the two tests the manufacturer uses. First, load: valvetrain noise tracks engine speed and largely ignores load, while a bottom-end noise worsens pulling a hill and eases when you lift off. Second, cylinder cancellation, which GM's bulletin PIP5832A describes precisely — noises "noticeably affected by cylinder cancellation are typically considered a lower end noise (connecting rod bearing, wrist pin etc.) whereas valvetrain noises aren't generally impacted." The same bulletin warns technicians not to use the Cylinder Deactivation function here, because it can make a lower-end noise look like a lifter. That distinction is worth thousands: one answer sits inside recall 25V-274 at no charge, the other is a repair you fund. Record thirty seconds and Pulscar sorts the two families before the conversation starts.

What actually happens at the dealer, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 — the engine question. "Is this an L87 or an L84?" One word decides whether a 597,571-vehicle recall applies to you.

Checkpoint 2 — the bulletin. "Which of N252494000, N252494001 or N252494002 does this VIN fall under, and is it OPEN in IVH?"

Checkpoint 3 — the test result in writing. "May I have the PicoScope pass or fail printed on the repair order?" It carries a warranty claim code, so it exists on paper.

Checkpoint 4 — the diagnostic fee. "What is the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $120-$200 at a dealer. What a diagnostic should cost has the picture.

Checkpoint 5 — top end or bottom end. "Is the finding a valvetrain concern or a bearing concern?" On a 6.2 this decides whether the coverage pays.

Checkpoint 6 — the authorisation ceiling. "Call me before anything over this figure." The dispute guide and the overcharging guide cover the rest.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Silverado owners the most

Trap 1: the tick diagnosed with the wrong software function. The situation: a 2020 truck, knock changing when one cylinder is switched off. What the shop says: "Cylinder four went quiet when we deactivated it. It is a lifter." What is really happening: PIP5832A tells technicians to avoid the Cylinder Deactivation function for noise work because it "may change/eliminate a lower end noise and give the impression it is a lifter... potentially leading to unnecessary lifter replacement." Price versus bill: a top-end job billed while a bearing wears underneath it. Your protective question: "Which GDS2 function isolated the cylinder — Cylinder Power Balance or Cylinder Deactivation?"

Trap 2: the engine quoted for a lifter. The situation: a 2016 truck, tick plus P0300, quoted a reman engine. What the shop says: "Once a lifter takes the cam out, the engine is done." What is really happening: GM's bulletin for that engine family, 15-06-01-002O, says the opposite in writing: replace camshaft and lifters where worn, and "It is not necessary to replace the engine assembly." Price versus bill: about $2,500 to $6,000 for lifters and camshaft, against owner-reported engine replacements of $12,360 to $20,000. Your protective question: "15-06-01-002O says an engine assembly is not necessary here. What did you find that takes this truck outside that bulletin?"

Trap 3: the recall described as an oil change. The situation: a 2022 6.2 with an intermittent knock under load, in for the campaign. What the shop says: "Your recall is done — we put the thicker oil in." What is really happening: under N252494001 that really was the whole remedy. Under N252494000 there is an acoustic test with a printed result, and an audible rod knock goes straight to an engine. Price versus bill: a free engine, or a 0W-40 oil change and a noise you still own. Your protective question: "Was a PicoScope test performed on this VIN, and can I see the pass or fail?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the patterns the documents and complaint records describe, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.

Scenario 1 — the noise that was a VIN question. A 2022 Sierra 1500 with the 6.2 at around 45,000 miles, deepening under load. Ask for the recall check first and the truck either falls inside 25V-274's build window or it does not; if it does, GM pays for the inspection and for 18.6 hours of engine labour where it fails. Ask for a diagnosis first and the same truck collects a teardown estimate on the way to the same answer. Lesson: on this engine the free step is not a shortcut past diagnosis — it is the diagnosis, and it happens to be paid for.

Scenario 2 — one tick, two bills. A 5.3 at 95,000 miles with a warm tick and a cylinder-specific misfire. Act in the first week and the published range for lifters with an intact camshaft is roughly $1,500 to $3,500. Finish the season on it and the lobe goes: lifters plus camshaft plus cleanup, where owner-reported figures cluster around $10,000. Lesson: on this failure the parts barely move the bill. Miles driven after the tick starts do.

Scenario 3 — the pass that was not a promise. A 6.2 that passed the acoustic test, got 0W-40, and failed weeks later. NHTSA's count is 499 post-remedy failure complaints, 473 after the oil change. Special coverage N252494003 is what matters next: 10 years or 150,000 miles from in-service date, regardless of ownership, for this condition only. Lesson: a pass buys you the coverage, not immunity — and the coverage is worth naming by number.

Your situation right now: four playbooks

"6.2, 2021-2024, any noise or none." Run the VIN today against 25V-274. If it is open, book it and ask for the printed test result. If it was closed months ago and a noise has appeared, go to Route 4 and name N252494003.

"5.3, warm tick, misfire code." Stop making long trips. Get the cylinder isolated, the pushrod inspected and the camshaft lobe described before parts are ordered.

"Cold tick only, everything else normal." Run the 5-to-7-minute clock tomorrow morning and write down the result.

"Just bought it and nothing is wrong." Check the engine RPO and build date, run the VIN, bank a thirty-second recording.

Why does a Silverado tick cost $1,500 for one owner and $10,000 for another? Because the parts are cheap and the collateral damage is not. A full set of lifters is a few hundred dollars; what moves the bill is whether a collapsed lifter has taken the camshaft lobe with it and pushed metal through the oil system. Caught at the ticking stage, published estimator ranges sit at roughly $1,500 to $3,500, rising to $2,500 to $6,000 once a camshaft is added. Driven on, the outcome shifts to what owners report in NHTSA complaints, where 24 headline figures across 117 lifter-and-tick reports cluster near a $10,000 median. That is why the honest advice here is not about negotiating — it is about parking the truck the day the tick appears, and that judgment has to be made before a shop opens. After the repair: verify, then prevent

Verify within a week. Recall or coverage work: the campaign number on the invoice and the test result attached. Lifter work: the tick gone at the engine speed where it lived, no stored misfire, readiness monitors set rather than codes cleared.

Keep the document that proves scope. On a recall the invoice should name the campaign; on a coverage repair, the coverage number.

Use the right oil from now on. On a 6.2 that passed, 25-NA-339 is explicit: "the engine must use 0W40 dexosR oil products for all future oil change services."

Record the before and after. The recording guide has the protocol; the noise index covers what each sound family means.

Re-check the VIN annually. EA25-007 and EA26-005 are both open, and both concern engines outside the recall's current boundaries.

Your action plan: 10 minutes, today, this week

Next 10 minutes — free:

  1. Read the engine RPO off the glovebox label. L87, L84, L83, L86 or L3B decides everything that follows.
  2. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and note every campaign, open and completed.
  3. Check the door jamb build date against 25V-274's window: March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024.

Today:

  1. If a campaign is open, book it at a GM dealer and ask for the result in writing. The work is free.
  2. Record thirty seconds of the noise, hood open and shut, and run it through a free sound check.
  3. Get the codes. P0016 and a cylinder-specific misfire send you down different routes.

This week:

  1. Run the cold-start clock: overnight soak, start, listen for 5 to 7 minutes, note whether the tick survived.
  2. If the recall was done previously and a noise is present, book it again under N252494003 by name.
  3. Bank a healthy baseline recording so any future change is a comparison rather than a memory.

Our own count, and how it was made. On September 6, 2026 we pulled every complaint NHTSA holds for Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, model years 2014 to 2025: 14,428 records. Requiring both a ticking or tapping word and the word "lifter" in the same complaint gives 117 reports, sampled by hand to confirm they describe the failure rather than mention it in passing. Of those, 24 carry a headline repair figure: median near $10,000, middle half roughly $7,800 to $13,000, range $2,853 to $20,000. A broader count matching "tick" and "engine" returned 191 and we discarded it — reading them showed brake vacuum pump complaints mentioning a tick incidentally. Complaint data self-selects toward bad outcomes, so treat that median as the tail of the distribution, not its centre. Separately, 269 of the 14,428 name 25V-274 or an N252494 bulletin by number.

What we looked for and did not find. There is no recall and no live GM special coverage for lifter failure on the 5.3, in any model year. Searching NHTSA's bulletin database for every GM customer satisfaction or special coverage programme mentioning lifters across Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac returns one hit, N232413430 above: 2023 model year 6.2L L87, expired May 31, 2026. We found no document setting an official limit on how far a truck may be driven with a lifter tick, so this guide states none.

Sounds: the noise index, engine knocking, ticking, rattling, noises ranked by cost, noises in NHTSA complaints. Money: diagnostic cost, dealer versus independent, signs of overcharging, disputing a bill. Owner-reported repair figures come from NHTSA's public complaints database and are owner reports, not audited invoices. Shop-price ranges are US independent-shop estimates from published repair-cost estimator summaries; dealer pricing typically runs 30-50% higher.
