Kia has recalled the Soul's 2.0-litre engine twice for the same part: the piston oil ring. NHTSA 21V-259 reached 125,400 Souls in 2021, and NHTSA 25V-099 reached another 83,621 in February 2025. Both remedies end the same way: a dealer installs software that listens for piston ring noise and, if it hears it, sets code P1327 and flashes the check engine light. Kia's owner letter puts the consequence in one clause: "the engine will be replaced."

That software gets item 10 to itself, told from the documents. This guide covers the second-generation Soul, 2014 to 2019 (1.6 GDI, 2.0 GDI, 1.6 turbo) and the third generation, 2020 to 2025 (2.0 MPI with the IVT, 1.6 turbo): two engine families, two sets of paperwork.

By the end you will know which of the ten failures is due at your mileage, what each costs in 2026, and which claims rest on a document you can open yourself. Claims marked 🟢 rest on a numbered document in the Sources section. Claims marked ⚪ are shop-price ranges or owner-reported figures, labelled as estimates because that is what they are.

How to use this guide

Start with the engine and the build date, not the symptom.

One rule overrides everything: the mileage in each heading is when the part starts talking, not when it breaks, and on the Soul the same complaint can be free, conditional or entirely yours depending on one line in a document. A 2021 Soul built in August 2020 can sit inside both piston ring recalls, and a 2016 whose converter recall was done in 2019 can still get a free converter under a later repair action.

Two entries are not defects in the usual sense: brakes (item 2) are wear, and oil consumption (item 5) is a measurement you have to start before anyone will act on it.

First: which Soul do you actually have?

Which engine? The first question, not the third. The piston ring recalls cover only the 2.0-litre Nu MPI, the Atkinson-cycle engine of the third generation; a 1.6 turbo Soul is outside both. The catalytic converter recall covers only the 1.6-litre Gamma GDI on 2012-2016 cars. The engine fire recall covers only the 2.0-litre Nu GDI on 2014-2015 cars. Check the window sticker or the engine cover.

2014-2016, the heavy years. 2,613 of the 4,023 NHTSA complaints we pulled for 2014-2025 Souls, plus the converter recall (19V-120), the fire recall (20V-750), a steering recall (17V-608), knock sensor software and a court-approved settlement.

2017-2019, the quiet end of the generation. Fewer complaints, corrected catalytic converter logic from the first day of 2017 production, an airbag control unit recall (22V-031), and knock sensor software on the 2.0 GDI.

2020-2025, the new engine. The 2.0 MPI, a continuously variable transmission Kia calls the IVT, and both piston ring recalls. 786 complaints so far, most engine complaints filed in the last two years.

The eight-minute check that dates your Soul better than the odometer

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and write down every campaign, open and completed. Completed ones matter as much: several remedies here are inspections with a pass or fail.
  2. Read the build date on the driver's door jamb sticker. Compare it with the windows in items 6, 7, 9 and 10.
  3. Confirm the engine. 2.0 MPI puts you in items 9 and 10; 1.6 GDI in items 6 and 8; 2.0 GDI in items 7 and 8.
  4. Check the oil level on level ground, cold, and write the reading down with the odometer. Low oil with no leak is item 5, and on a 2020-2023 it is the first warning 25V-099 lists.
  5. Start the engine and look at the check engine light for a full minute. Steady is a question; flashing is items 8, 9 or 10.
  6. Listen at idle with the bonnet up, then at 2,000 rpm in park. A deep knock that follows the revs is items 8 to 10; a tick is usually cheaper.
  7. Turn the headlights on and work the indicator stalk both ways. Lights that drop out when you signal are item 4.
  8. Turn the wheel lock to lock with the car stationary and listen at the column. A clunk from the rack is item 3.

Find your situation: eight ways people arrive here

"Check engine light flashing, code P1327." → Items 9 and 10. The software did what it was installed to do.

"The dealer said my engine passed the recall test." → Item 10. A pass is a reading on a date, and the test itself changed in 2025.

"It uses a quart of oil between changes." → Item 5, and on a 2020-2023 also items 9 and 10.

"Light blinking, car won't go over 2,000 rpm." → Item 8, knock sensor limp mode on a GDI engine.

"P0420 and a rattle from underneath." → Item 6, the catalytic converter recall and its later repair action.

"It hesitates or slips pulling away, 2020 or 2021." → Item 1, an IVT software campaign.

What actually determines your number

Whether the VIN sits inside a live campaign. Bigger than mileage or trim, and all of them free.

The engine, not the model year. Three engines, three sets of documents, and a 1.6 turbo Soul is outside almost every engine document here.

Whether the software is installed. On a 2012-2019 GDI car the knock sensor update unlocks the 15-year warranty; on a 2020-2023 car the piston ring software is what triggers a free engine later.

Your oil change records. The settlement's warranty can be refused for "Exceptional Neglect," defined partly as one gap between oil changes longer than 10,500 miles or 14 months.

Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% cheaper on labour-heavy work, but campaign work goes to a Kia dealer. The comparison maps which jobs go where.

Where the car lives. Road salt decides item 2, and California registration decides whether an emissions campaign in item 1 is optional.

The ten problems, roughly in the order they arrive

The tell. A pull-away that feels like the car is in neutral for a second, revs that rise without speed, a check engine light. 95 complaints in our sample from 2020-2025 Souls name the transmission, CVT or IVT, 73 of them on 2020 cars, at a median odometer near 9,600 miles among the 48 we could parse.

What it actually is. Kia's own paperwork names two separate things. Campaign SC199, launched in December 2020, covers 2020-2021 Souls built 24 November 2018 to 17 April 2020 that "may exhibit a lack of acceleration or delay in accelerating due to transmission slippage, in addition to the illumination of Malfunction Indicator Lamp." The dealer updates the transmission control software, runs a relearn, and replaces the IVT only if the relearn fails with code P160300. The second is recall 23V-531: 20,453 model year 2023 Souls built 9 November 2022 to 10 May 2023, where a capacitor in the controller of the Idle Stop & Go electric oil pump "may have been damaged by the supplier." The warnings include a cluster of unrelated lamps, limp mode and smoke; until the repair, Kia says park outdoors, away from structures.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Asking for the campaign by its Kia number. SC199 is an emissions service campaign, so a search for "recalls" can miss it. Our slipping transmission guide covers the cheaper causes, starting with fluid level.

Where this does not apply. A 1.6 turbo Soul uses a dual-clutch gearbox, not the IVT, and neither document covers it. A 2022 Soul is outside both. A 2023 Soul built after 10 May 2023 has the corrected pump controller.

At the shop — say this: "Check SC199 and 23V-531 against this VIN. If SC199 was done, print the TCM software level and the relearn result, and tell me which code, if any, was stored."

2 · Brakes, and the brake lines that rust in the salt belt — 25,000 to 70,000 miles

The tell. A squeal at low speed that fades under firm pressure is the wear indicator; grinding is a different bill. The one that matters here is quieter: a pedal that gets softer over weeks, or a brake fluid warning lamp. Kia's letter uses exactly those words, "gradually increasing soft brake pedal feel and/or Brake Fluid Warning Light illumination."

What it actually is, and a warning about counts. Mostly ordinary wear, plus one campaign. SC334, announced in June 2025 and renotified in August 2026, covers 2014-2019 Souls built 21 July 2013 to 24 December 2018 "originally sold in or are currently registered in" one of 28 salt states. Dealers replace corroded lines and add anti-corrosion material, free. On 2020 and later Souls, bulletin TSB CHA104 covers a stability-control "honk" and a spongy pedal with a specific bleed. As for the numbers: 242 complaints in our sample contain the word "brake," but 106 of those are stories about engine failure or stalling and 30 are about fire or smoke. Filtered to complaints about pads, rotors, calipers, lines, fluid or the pedal, and filed against the brake system, the count is 49. Brakes are not what makes this car unusual.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Pad thickness in millimetres, and a look underneath, before agreeing to anything. In the salt belt, a damp, rust-scaled line along the floor pan is SC334 work, and free. Our pad guide covers pricing.

Fix it yourself — the inspection, not the job. Look at the outer pad through the wheel spokes with a torch and compare left to right; then, with the car cold, look along the rigid lines under the floor for scale and wet spots. Write it down with the date. The honest limit: do not touch a corroded line. Bending or clamping one to "check" it can open the leak you were looking for.

Where this does not apply. A car that has always lived outside the 28 states is not in SC334's primary population, although the bulletin tells dealers how to handle one that shows the damage anyway. A 2020 or later Soul is outside it entirely.

At the shop — say this: "Give me pad thickness in millimetres, and check this VIN for SC334. If the car was ever registered in a salt state, I want the brake lines inspected under the campaign."

3 · The steering clunk, and the small campaigns nobody mentions — any mileage

The tell. For the steering recall, the Part 573 writes it out: "The driver will hear a clunking noise from the steering rack while turning the steering wheel." 61 complaints in our sample describe a steering rack, pinion, column, coupling or steering failure and are filed against the steering system.

What it actually is. 17V-608 covers 342,381 model year 2014-2016 Souls and Soul EVs built 21 July 2013 to 30 September 2015, and it exists because "the remedy for" two earlier pinion plug recalls "may not have been properly performed." If the plug is not secured, "the pinion gear may separate from the steering gear assembly, causing loss of steering." Around it sit five campaigns small enough to be forgotten. 15V-123: a 2014-2015 accelerator pedal that "may fracture," fixed with a rubber support. 22V-096: 128,280 model year 2014 Souls whose front airbags may not deploy, with the warning listed as "None." 22V-031: 253,281 model year 2017-2019 Souls whose airbag control unit can fail, lighting the lamp with code B1620. 23V-298: 30,113 model year 2023 Souls whose instrument cluster may stay blank. 23V-830: 933 model year 2023 Souls built in April 2023 whose side curtain airbags may inflate without a crash. Separately, Kia's customer satisfaction campaigns CS2306 and CS2311 add anti-theft software and an ignition cylinder protector to key-start cars.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Reading which campaign was performed rather than whether one was. An owner told in 2016 that "the steering recall is done" may have a completed earlier campaign and an open 17V-608. Our noise-when-turning guide separates a rack clunk from a CV joint.

Where this does not apply. A Soul built after 30 September 2015 is outside 17V-608; production switched to the correct adhesive on 1 October 2015. Every small campaign here is defined by a build window, so a model year match means nothing on its own.

At the shop — say this: "Run this VIN against every open campaign, including 17V-608, 22V-096, 22V-031 and 23V-830, and give me the completion date for each one that shows closed."

4 · Headlights that flicker, and the horn that fades: two warranty extensions — 40,000 to 90,000 miles

The tell. Headlights that flicker, drop out for a second, or go dark when you signal. 141 complaints in our sample describe flickering, failing or melting headlights, and 101 of them are on 2014 cars. On a 2020 or later Soul the equivalent small failure is the horn: silent, or a different sound than it used to make.

What it actually is, in Kia's words. For the 2014 Soul, Kia's warranty extension WTY010, dated 21 September 2018, says "the contact points in the multi-function switch may become worn and could result in intermittent headlamp flickering," and extends coverage of that switch "from 5-years/60,000-miles to 15-years/unlimited-miles, starting from the date of first service," for all 2014 Souls built 21 July 2013 to 20 June 2014, used cars included. A car first sold in 2014 is covered into 2029. A second cause is heat: bulletin TSB ELE093 covers 2014-2015 Souls built 26 August 2013 to 20 April 2015 with non-projector headlamps that "may exhibit a heat-deformed headlamp bulb connector." For the third generation, WTY041 extends horn coverage on 2020-2025 Souls built 15 November 2018 to 13 August 2024 to "10 years / 120,000 miles," where the cause is "corrosion inside the electric horn and/or carbonization of the contact point."

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The letter in the glovebox. Both extensions pay only if you arrive with the symptom, and a shop that has never heard of WTY010 may simply sell a switch or a bulb.

Fix it yourself — the connector check. With the headlights off and cool, reach behind the headlamp, unplug the bulb connector, and look at it. Brown, glossy or misshapen plastic is the ELE093 condition. The honest limit: a heat-deformed connector means that circuit ran hot. Do not just fit a new bulb into it; the connector and its wiring are the repair.

Where this does not apply. WTY010 covers only the 2014 model year. A 2015 or 2016 gets the PS483 diagnosis, but no extension. Projector-style headlamps are outside ELE093.

At the shop — say this: "This is a 2014 Soul with flickering headlamps. Please diagnose it under warranty extension WTY010, and check the bulb connectors against bulletin ELE093 while the lamp is out."

5 · Oil consumption on the GDI engines, and the test that decides who pays — 50,000 to 100,000 miles

The tell. An oil light between services and a dipstick that reads low with nothing on the driveway. The phrase owners repeat is "no external leaks." 492 complaints in our sample describe oil consumption, burning oil or adding quarts between changes: 383 on 2014-2019 cars and 109 on 2020-2025 cars.

What it actually is, and the test Kia uses. Kia's bulletin TSB ENG222, "Excessive Oil Consumption," first issued in December 2020 and last revised in April 2025, lists the Soul from 2012 to 2024. The dealer tops the oil up and seals the drain plug, filter, dipstick and cap with tamper-evident silicone. After 1,000 miles: "If the oil consumption amount is less than 1qt/1,000 miles, Normal consumption, No Repair." Over that, the first repair is a combustion chamber cleaning with two two-hour soaks, then another 1,000 miles, and only then engine replacement, which "requires TL PWA with Oil Consumption results." The bulletin is a warranty-period fix; "any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the warranty period will require DPSM approval."

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The drain plug. NHTSA's denied petition DP22-003, which included Souls, looked at Hyundai and Kia engines losing oil suddenly and concluded that the cause was service, not design: "If during an oil change service, a technician fails to remove the existing drain plug gasket before installing a new gasket," the plug can back out. Fix it yourself — the consumption log. Change the oil, note the odometer, and read the dipstick cold on level ground every 500 miles, writing each reading down. At 1,000 miles you have a rate, and the rate is the only thing ENG222 acts on. The honest limit: it tells you how much, not from where; rings, valve seals and a gasket give the same number.

Where this does not apply. On a 2020-2023 Soul with the 2.0 MPI, increased oil consumption is the first warning both piston ring recalls list, so start with items 9 and 10. On a 2012-2019 GDI car, keep the log anyway: item 8's settlement counts an oil consumption diagnosis left unrepaired past 30 days or 1,000 miles toward "Exceptional Neglect," a ground for refusing the engine warranty.

At the shop — say this: "Open an oil consumption test under TSB ENG222 with today's odometer and oil level on the repair order, and seal it. I want the result recorded even if it passes."

How do you prove a Kia Soul is burning too much oil? Kia's own bulletin, TSB ENG222, decides it with a number, not a description. The dealer tops the oil to the full mark, seals the drain plug, filter, dipstick and filler cap with tamper-evident silicone, and sends the car away for 1,000 miles. Under one quart in that distance is classed as normal consumption and nothing is repaired. Over one quart triggers a combustion chamber cleaning and a second 1,000-mile test, and only a second failure leads to an engine replacement, which needs regional approval outside the warranty. An owner who has been topping up quietly for a year has no measurements and no case. 6 · The catalytic converter on the 1.6 GDI, and the recall that can reopen — 75,000 to 120,000 miles

The tell. A check engine light with P0420, then a loss of power, a rattle from underneath, sometimes a knock. The Part 573 lists the warning as "Illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) and/or engine knocking noise." 688 complaints in our sample name the catalytic converter or P0420, 627 of them on 2014-2016 cars, at a median odometer near 100,000 miles (middle half 77,000 to 120,000) among the 287 we could parse.

What it actually is. 19V-120, filed 22 February 2019, blames "inaccurate Catalytic Overheating Protection (COP) ECU logic parameters." An overheated converter lets "substrate particles" into the combustion chamber, abnormal combustion damages a piston, and a broken rod can puncture the block; oil on a hot exhaust "may result in a fire." The remedy is conditional, and the dealer instructions make it a flowchart. No P0420 stored: software update only. P0420 stored: new converter plus software. P0420 with an active misfire code: a compression test, and any cylinder under the 149 psi minimum means a new short block. In October 2024 Kia added SC176Y, a subsequent repair action for cars that already had SC176 done and now store P0420, under the same logic and at no charge.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The code, written down, before anyone quotes. A car that had the software in 2019 and sets P0420 in 2026 is SC176Y, not a paid job. Where this does not apply. A 2.0 GDI or 1.6 turbo Soul is outside 19V-120, and so is every 2017 or later Soul: Kia corrected the logic from the start of 2017 model year production on 27 July 2016. If your 2017-2019 Soul has the 1.6-litre, neither this recall nor its repair action names it.

At the shop — say this: "Check 19V-120 and SC176Y against this VIN. Print the stored codes, and if a misfire code is active, I want the compression readings for every cylinder on the order."

7 · Engine compartment fires on 2014-2016: what the documents say, and what the complaints cannot — any mileage

The tell. Smoke from under the bonnet, a burning smell, an oil light, sometimes nothing at all before flames. 20V-750 lists the warnings in one line: "engine noise, illumination of check engine light, illumination of low oil light, fuel smell, burning smell, oil leaking, smoke."

What the complaint numbers say, and what they do not. Of the 4,023 complaints we pulled, 401 carry NHTSA's crash or fire flag: 234 fire, 173 crash, six both. That is 10%, against 3.3% in the sample behind our Cherokee guide. 186 of the fire-flagged complaints are on 2014-2016 cars; the 2020-2025 generation has 12. Now the limits. A fire flag is a box ticked on a form, not an investigator's finding: 169 of the 234 describe flames or a fire outright, 23 mention only smoke, and some describe a parked car or a heated seat. 57 contain an engine-failure word such as knock, rod, piston or seize, and 17 name the catalytic converter, but a complaint that mentions a knock and carries a fire flag is one report in which both facts appear, not proof that one caused the other. And 201 of the 234 were filed in 2019 or later, after the 2018 petition and the 2019 and 2020 recalls, so the filing dates measure attention as much as incidents.

What the documents say. A 2018 petition from the Center for Auto Safety, reviewed as DP18-003, led NHTSA to open PE19-004 in March 2019, covering 2010-2015 Souls among 1.7 million Kias; it produced 20V-750. Its Part 573 is unusually candid: "a cause resulting from a manufacturing or design defect has not been identified," and the cause field reads "Undetermined." The remedy is a sweep: a leak inspection, an engine test, repairs up to a new engine, and knock sensor software with 15-year long block coverage. EA21-003, closed on 5 February 2024, is the closest thing to a verdict: most recalled Hyundai and Kia vehicles "experienced lower reported fire rates after the remedies were applied," while most that did not receive them "experienced relatively high fire rates." Kia agreed to renotify most owners every eight months for three years.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Completing the recalls that already exist. Kia's last annual report for 20V-750, covering all six models, shows 184,326 of 294,756 remedied. A burning smell from a 2014-2016 Soul is a stop-and-check situation, not a drive-to-the-dealer one.

Where this does not apply. 20V-750's Soul entry is the 2.0 GDI only; the 1.6 GDI fire path is item 6. A 2016 2.0 GDI is outside 20V-750 but inside the knock sensor campaign in item 8.

At the shop — say this: "Check 20V-750 and 19V-120 against this VIN, and if either shows completed, tell me the date and whether the engine test passed. If it smells of oil or fuel under the bonnet, inspect for leaks before anything else."

Why does the Kia Soul appear so often in fire complaints, and what can an owner actually do about it? In NHTSA's public complaint database for 2014-2025 Souls, 234 of 4,023 complaints carry the fire flag, 186 of them on 2014-2016 cars. Those numbers describe what owners reported, not how often Souls burn, and the recall documents are careful in the same way: recall 20V-750, covering 123,522 model year 2014-2015 Souls with the 2.0-litre GDI engine, states that a cause resulting from a manufacturing or design defect "has not been identified." What NHTSA did establish, in Engineering Analysis EA21-003, is that recalled vehicles generally showed lower reported fire rates after the remedy was applied and unrepaired ones relatively high rates. The tell. A deep knock that rises with the revs, then a blinking check engine light and a car that will not pull. Kia's letters describe the second part exactly: "The Malfunction Indicator Lamp ('MIL') will blink continuously, and the vehicle will be placed in a reduced power and acceleration mode," with engine speed "limited to approximately 1800-2000 RPM" and top speed "approximately 65mph or less." 615 complaints in our sample on 2014-2019 Souls describe rod bearing failure, knocking, a seized engine or piston damage, at a median odometer near 92,700 miles among the 276 we could parse; 42 name code P1326.

What it actually is. Wear in the connecting rod bearings, and a detection program rather than a repair. Kia's Knock Sensor Detection System "detects vibrations indicating the onset of excessive connecting rod bearing wear." Three campaigns install it: PI2002A on all 2012-2016 Souls with the 1.6 GDI built 8 July 2011 to 11 August 2016, about 378,831 vehicles; PI2002B on 2014-2016 Souls with the 2.0 GDI built 21 July 2013 to 11 August 2016, about 195,544; and PI2107 on 2017-2019 Souls with the 2.0 GDI. Completing it earns coverage of the engine long block "for 15 years from the date the vehicle was first put into service or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first, for both new and used vehicle owners." The Engine Litigation II settlement, finally approved on 9 April 2024, puts the same 15-year or 150,000-mile Extended Warranty for 2012-2016 Souls with the Gamma 1.6-liter GDI and 2014-2019 Souls with the Nu 2.0-liter GDI into a court order, transferable to later owners.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The update, before the noise. Under the settlement, "KSDS Installation Neglect means the failure to obtain KSDS before experiencing an otherwise covered engine failure." And keep the oil receipts: "Exceptional Neglect" includes "one oil change gap of greater than 10,500 miles" or "greater than 14 months." Failures in the first 15,000 miles are exempt from that test. Where this does not apply. A 1.6 turbo Soul is not in any of the three campaigns or the settlement's Soul list, and neither is a 2017-2019 1.6. A 2020 or later Soul has a different engine and different paperwork: items 9 and 10.

At the shop — say this: "Has the knock sensor update been completed on this VIN, and on what date? If P1326 is stored, I want it assessed under the 15-year long block coverage, and I have my oil change records."

The tell. Oil disappearing between changes, then a rattle or knock, then a stall. The Part 573 lists the warnings in order: "Increased oil consumption, abnormal engine noise, and illumination of the oil pressure warning lamp."

What it actually is. A heat-treatment fault at the ring supplier. 21V-259 says "inconsistent heat-treating process occurred resulting in excessive oil ring hardness," which can chip the ring and scuff the bore, raise oil consumption, and seize a connecting rod bearing, "in limited cases a fire, due to a connecting rod puncturing the engine block." The chronology starts with one owner complaint filed on 23 October 2020 and records two 2020 Soul fires in early 2021 where a connecting rod had holed the block; four potentially related fires in all, no crashes or injuries. Dealers began with a vibration inspection in June 2021: a harness on the knock sensor, fed into the service tablet's audio input, three 15-second readings held at 1,400 to 1,600 rpm. The Piston-ring Noise Sensing System software, promised "when available," arrived in December 2021 as SC209A, installable "even if you have already been to the dealer." In March 2022 SC209Y set the rule that still applies: P1327 stored after SC209A means a new long block. Kia's April 2026 report shows 130,660 of 147,249 Souls and Seltos "remedied," a category that includes cars inspected without needing a repair.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Confirming SC209A separately from SC209. A car inspected in mid-2021 may have passed the test and never received the software that catches the failure later.

Where this does not apply. A 1.6 turbo Soul is outside it. A Soul built after 24 October 2020 is outside this recall, but may be inside item 10: the two windows overlap from 2 July to 24 October 2020, and neither population was built in VIN order.

At the shop — say this: "Confirm SC209 and SC209A completion dates for this VIN separately, and read the codes. If P1327 is stored, this is SC209Y."

The tell. The same three warnings, and owners describing them in the same order: "rapid oil consumption, abnormal engine noise," then stalling at a stop. 306 complaints in our sample on 2020-2025 Souls describe piston ring or engine failure, at a median odometer near 62,000 miles among the 145 we could parse, and 233 of them were filed in 2025 or 2026.

What it actually is. A second, different fault in the same part from the same supplier. 25V-099, filed on 17 February 2025, says "due to a quality deviation by the piston oil ring supplier, the piston ring may, over time, damage the surface of the cylinder wall," with the same path to seizure and, "in limited cases," fire. The chronology records 400 potentially related stall allegations and four potentially related fires on the Soul, no crashes or injuries. Kia fitted rings "of a different type and provided by a different supplier" in engines built from 1 October 2021.

What PNSS does, according to the documents. Two separate things carry the name. The first is the dealer inspection, set out in bulletin SST082. The technician disconnects the knock sensor connector, plugs the inspection harness into "the engine knock sensor," connects the other end to the service tablet's audio jack, and grounds it to the battery. The recall bulletin requires coolant above 185°F (85°C). The tablet reads the sensor while the technician holds the revs it asks for, and returns PASS, NO PASS or RETEST; a bad reading prompts a check of "the audio jack input (microphone) or knock sensor connector," and the harness must be routed away from the engine because "external vibration may negatively affect" the result. NO PASS means a new long block. The second is the software left in the engine control module for the life of the car. NHTSA's audit says it "monitors the engine for unusual noise patterns" and alerts the driver "by flashing the check engine light and setting Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1327." Kia's own reply to that audit adds that dealers then replace the engine "regardless of the actual cause." The documents we read do not say which sensor that software listens with, and none describes a power limit, unlike the knock sensor letters in item 8.

What went wrong in 2025, from the federal audit. NHTSA opened AQ25-001 on 6 August 2025 after complaints of "inconsistent inspection results." The inspection launched on 4 April 2025 as a cold test, after the car sat overnight, and gave "a higher-than-expected failure rate" because normal cold-start vibration read as damage. On 29 April Kia switched to a warm test, and a software error in that release made "all inspection tests" report "false positives for a damaged engine." The remedy was suspended from 30 April to 7 May 2025, engine orders placed on or before 7 May were cancelled, and cars that had failed were re-tested. Kia mailed no letters about the pause. It also confirmed "it is not offering any specific warranty coverage for this recall," but instructs dealers to replace the engine "at no cost to the customer, with no time or mileage limitation," once the software is installed and P1327 is present. SC336YZ, issued on 4 September 2025, handles cars with P1327 or engine noise after the recall. NHTSA closed the audit on 18 December 2025 with no further action. The July 2026 report shows 84,339 of 137,256 Souls and Seltos remedied.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The date of your inspection, and a copy of the result. A test run between 4 April and 7 May 2025 used a procedure Kia has since replaced, and the bulletin tells dealers to photograph the PASS or NO PASS screen for the claim.

Where this does not apply. A 1.6 turbo Soul is outside it. A 2023 Soul built from 20 April 2022 has the new rings. A 2020 built before 2 July 2020 is item 9 only.

At the shop — say this: "Check 25V-099 on this VIN. What date was the vibration inspection, which revision of the procedure, and can I have the result screen? Is the PNSS software installed, and is P1327 stored?"

Why is the engine the line to stare at on a Kia Soul price ladder? Because it is the only four-figure item that five separate documents already cover, and whether you pay turns on paperwork rather than on the part. Across 25 dollar figures we could parse from engine complaints on 2014-2019 Souls, the median quote is $6,720 and the middle half runs $3,750 to $8,000. Inside 19V-120, 20V-750, the knock sensor campaigns with their 15-year long block coverage, 21V-259 or 25V-099, the same engine can cost nothing, provided the right code is stored, the right software was installed first, and the oil records have no long gaps. Two rows invert this guide rather than refine it. A 1.6 turbo Soul deletes almost every engine document above: no recall, no knock sensor campaign, no settlement line names it, so the cheap protections become a measured oil log and a recording. A California-registered 2020-2021 goes the other way: Kia's SC199 letter says the state requires emissions campaigns to be completed "prior to annual vehicle registration renewal," so an item that is optional elsewhere becomes a condition of keeping the car on the road.

Best and worst Kia Soul years to buy, and what the lists get wrong

Search for Soul years to avoid and the answers converge: skip 2012 and 2014-2016, buy 2018-2019 or 2022 and later. That comes from complaint volume and survey scores, both poor proxies for repair cost.

What the complaint counts say. NHTSA's database, pulled on 12 September 2026, holds 4,023 complaints for 2014-2025 Souls: 898 on 2014, 903 on 2015, 812 on 2016, then 271, 218 and 135 for 2017-2019, a jump to 375 on 2020, then 232, 88, 50, 29 and 12 for 2021 through 2025. The lists are right about 2014-2016. They miss the 2020 jump: a new engine and transmission, not age.

Where the lists mislead. They rank by model year; every document here ranks by engine and build date. A "best" 2018 with the 2.0 GDI sits inside a knock sensor campaign, and a "best" 2022 sits inside 25V-099 if built before 19 April 2022.

The honest ranking, by what it costs you.

  • Best position: a 2014-2019 GDI car with the knock sensor update on record, oil receipts in a folder and every engine recall completed, while its 15 years last.
  • Often better value: a 2023 or later Soul built from 20 April 2022, outside both piston ring recalls.
  • Buy with the paperwork printed: a 2020-2022 2.0 MPI. Ask for the inspection date and result screen, and confirm the PNSS software.
  • Buy with your eyes open: a 1.6 turbo, which no engine document protects.

What to check on the test drive. The eight-minute check above, in that order. It works on the Sorento and the Telluride too.

What actually happens at the dealer, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 — the campaign question. "Which campaign numbers did you run this VIN against, including Kia's own SC numbers?" SC199 and SC334 will not appear in NHTSA's lookup.

Checkpoint 2 — the build date and engine. "What production date and engine does the system show?" Those two facts decide items 6 to 10.

Checkpoint 3 — the code question. "Which codes are stored, P1327, P1326, P0420?" Each one opens a different free path.

Checkpoint 4 — the test result. "Can I have the inspection result screen and the date?" Dealers photograph it anyway.

Checkpoint 5 — the software question. "Is the PNSS or knock sensor software installed, and when?" On both generations the software decides the later claim.

Checkpoint 6 — the authorisation ceiling. "Call me before anything over this figure." The dispute guide covers what to do when that is ignored.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Kia Soul owners the most

Trap 1: the passed test, read as a clean bill. The situation: a 2021 Soul at 48,000 miles, inspected under 25V-099, now using a quart every 1,500 miles. What the shop says: "It passed the recall. Oil consumption is outside the campaign." What is really happening: the remedy includes software that keeps listening; a car that passed can set P1327 later, and SC336YZ then replaces the engine. Price versus bill: $0 under SC336YZ, against an owner-reported median near $7,500. Your protective question: "Is the PNSS software installed, is P1327 stored, and can I see the inspection result from the day it passed?"

Trap 2: the converter recall that "was already done." The situation: a 2015 Soul 1.6 at 104,000 miles with P0420 and a rattle underneath; SC176 completed in 2019. What the shop says: "The recall was done years ago. A converter is about two and a half thousand." What is really happening: SC176Y exists for exactly this car: P0420 after SC176 means a free converter, and a free short block on failed compression. Price versus bill: $0, against owner-reported quotes with a median of $2,600. Your protective question: "Does SC176Y apply to this VIN now that P0420 is stored?"

Trap 3: the software update sold as the fix. The situation: a 2015 Soul 2.0 GDI at 88,000 miles with a faint knock when warm, booked in for the knock sensor campaign. What the shop says: "We did the knock sensor update. You're all set." What is really happening: the software "detects vibrations indicating the onset of excessive connecting rod bearing wear"; it repairs nothing. What it earns is 15-year or 150,000-mile long block coverage, counted from first service, not from the update. Price versus bill: $0 for a bearing failure inside that window, against an owner-reported median of $6,720 once the window closes. Your protective question: "What first-service date does your system show for this car, and when does its 15-year coverage end?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is a specific person's story.

Scenario 1 — the sixteen-week overlap. Take a 2021 Soul built in August 2020 with a flashing check engine light. That date sits inside 21V-259, which ends on 24 October 2020, and 25V-099, which starts on 2 July 2020. Ask for both by number: either way, P1327 after the software means a free long block. Lesson: two recalls can claim the same car, and the VIN, not the model year, says which.

Scenario 2 — the letter in the glovebox. Take a 2014 Soul at 80,000 miles with flickering headlights, quoted about $212 for a switch. Ask for WTY010 and the diagnosis is free, the switch is free, and a past invoice can be reimbursed. Lesson: a warranty extension pays only the owner who asks for it by name.

Scenario 3 — the oil log that became a claim. Take a 2017 Soul 2.0 GDI knocking at 95,000 miles, updated in 2022, with receipts showing no gap over 14 months: the 15-year coverage applies. Without the receipts, the "Exceptional Neglect" clause is in play, and the owner-reported median is $6,720. Lesson: on this car the oil receipts are the warranty.

Your situation right now: four playbooks

"2020-2023 Soul, 2.0 MPI, no symptoms." Run the VIN. If 21V-259 or 25V-099 shows completed, ask whether the PNSS software is on the car.

"Flashing light or a knock, any GDI or MPI Soul." Pull over, check the oil, and tow if the oil light is on or the engine is loud. Write down the code.

"2014-2016 with a burning smell." Park it outside, run the VIN against 19V-120 and 20V-750, and book the inspection.

"Just bought one." Run the VIN, photograph the door jamb, find the oil receipts, and record a healthy engine.

After the repair: verify, then prevent

Verify within a week. Campaign number on the invoice, software level written down, the inspection screen in your file, and the oil checked at 500 miles on a new engine.

Record the before and after. Thirty seconds from the same position is the cheapest proof of repair there is. The recording guide has the protocol, and our analysis of noise words in NHTSA complaints shows which ones precede an expensive repair.

Prevent the next one. Oil at the specified interval and viscosity, the level checked monthly, and the underbody rinsed through a salt-belt winter.

What we looked for and did not find. There is no warranty extension of any kind for the 2020-2023 piston ring recalls: Kia told NHTSA so in writing, and the only open-ended promise is an engine when P1327 is set. There is no recall, campaign or settlement line covering the 1.6 turbo Soul engine, and none naming a 2017-2019 Soul with the 1.6-litre. No PNSS document names the sensor the in-car software uses, and Kia's answer on how the revised test identifies damage is redacted in the public file. Kia's settlement site returned 403, so settlement terms come from the joint agreement on the Hyundai administrator's site, which binds both makers. Estimator pages were not opened; every ⚪ shop price comes from a search-result summary and says so where it is used.

Methodology. Document numbers, populations, production windows and quoted wording come from the Part 573 reports, remedy instructions, owner letters, completion reports, Kia service bulletins, ODI resumes and the settlement agreement, read as text. Owner-reported figures come from NHTSA's public complaints API for the Kia Soul, model years 2014 to 2025, pulled on 12 September 2026: 4,023 complaints filed between December 2013 and September 2026, of which 401 carry a crash or fire flag. Topic counts come from our own narrow regular expressions, spot-checked by reading samples; a naive match on "brake" returns 242 complaints, of which 49 are about the brakes. Odometer medians use the figures we could parse, and dollar medians exclude purchase prices. A complaint is an owner's account, not an audited invoice or a fire investigation.
