FCA has recalled the same part on the Jeep Cherokee four separate times: 20V-343, 23V-302, 25V-011 and 26V-290, covering the power transfer unit across almost the whole 2014-2023 KL generation. The newest reaches 61,711 vehicles, and its Part 573 says in six words the thing owners most need to hear: "The remedy is under development."

Most guides like this one are archaeology. This one has a live campaign with a named risk and no repair attached. It covers the KL Cherokee, 2014 to 2023 โ€” the 2.4 Tigershark, the 3.2 Pentastar V6, the 2.0 turbo and the 948TE nine-speed โ€” not the Grand Cherokee, which is a different vehicle with a different list.

By the end you will know which of the ten failures is due at your mileage, what each costs in 2026, and which claims rest on a document you can open yourself. Claims marked ๐ŸŸข rest on a numbered document in the Sources section. Claims marked โšช are shop-price ranges or owner-reported figures, labelled as estimates because that is what they are.

How to use this guide

Start with the VIN and the build date, not the symptom: on this vehicle the paperwork decides more than the odometer does.

One rule overrides everything: the mileage in each heading is when the part starts talking, not when it breaks โ€” and on the KL Cherokee two campaigns can claim the same vehicle while only one owes you a repair. Recall 25V-011 covers vehicles built 10 October 2016 to 20 February 2019; recall 26V-290 covers vehicles built 12 December 2018 to 24 February 2023. A Cherokee built in the ten weeks between those dates sits inside both. One has a remedy today. The other does not.

Two entries are not defects at all โ€” brakes (item 5) and oil consumption monitoring (item 6) are wear and maintenance. And a completed recall is not a repaired vehicle: on 20V-343 and 23V-302 the remedy is a software flash that manages a failure rather than preventing it.

First: which Cherokee do you actually have?

Does it have the two-speed PTU at all? The first question, not the third. Both the 20V-343 and 25V-011 dealer service instructions state that the recall "applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a Power Transfer Unit (PTU) (sales code DK4)." A front-wheel-drive Cherokee has no PTU, which deletes items 7, 8 and 9 and the largest single expense here. The code is on the window sticker and the build sheet.

2014-2016, the launch years. The heaviest in every sense: 5,834 of the 9,971 NHTSA complaints filed against 2014-2023 Cherokees. They sit inside the first PTU campaign (20V-343), the liftgate fire campaign (23V-338, superseding 15V-393 and 15V-826), the nine-speed harness campaign (16V-529) and, for 2014 with the V6, 19V-447 โ€” plus closed investigation PE22-009.

2017-2019, the middle. The snap ring years. 25V-011 defines them by build date, and a 2019 can fall on either side of the line. The 2019 vehicles also carry 18V-739, 18V-523 and 19V-637.

2020-2023, the run-out. Outside every transmission campaign, outside the liftgate recall, outside the first three PTU campaigns โ€” and squarely inside 26V-290, the one with no remedy. 2021 adds 20V-657 and 21V-310; 2022 adds 24V-239.

The eight-minute check that dates your Cherokee better than the odometer

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and write down every campaign, open and completed. 26V-290 VINs became searchable on 14 May 2026.
  2. Find the build date on the driver's door jamb sticker. Compare it against the windows in items 7, 8 and 9.
  3. Check the window sticker or build sheet for sales code DK4. No DK4, no two-speed PTU, and items 7 through 9 do not apply.
  4. Start the engine and photograph the cluster before any message clears. Service 4WD is item 7, 8 or 9 depending on build date.
  5. Drive a slow figure of eight on a quiet surface, windows down, and listen at the front. Grinding, whine or a clunk on direction change belongs in those same items.
  6. From a standstill, accelerate gently to 40 mph and let it coast down. A hard 3-2 downshift is item 1.
  7. Apply and release the electric parking brake ten times, then check the left rear cargo area for damp. A parking brake that hesitates is item 2, and the module lives there.
  8. On a 2014-2016 with a power liftgate, look up 23V-338 by number. Having had the two earlier recalls done does not close it.

Find your situation: eight ways people arrive here

"Service 4WD came on and the front end grinds." โ†’ Items 7 to 9. The build date decides which, and whether anyone owes you a repair.

"It rolled after I put it in Park." โ†’ Items 7 to 9 again: the second failure mode all four PTU campaigns describe.

"The parking brake applies itself while I am driving." โ†’ Item 2, a closed federal investigation and a 2016 bulletin.

"It jerks and bangs between second and third." โ†’ Item 1, and no recall covers ordinary shift quality.

"Service Shifter, and all the gear lights turned red." โ†’ Item 1, the most-quoted message on 2016-2018 vehicles.

"It stalled while I was moving." โ†’ Item 4, and on a 2019 2.4-litre there is a free calibration for it.

"Burning smell and the liftgate stopped working." โ†’ Item 3, a fire recall, and NHTSA's advice is to park outside.

"It burns a quart of oil every thousand miles." โ†’ Item 6, no recall, and it starts with a documented consumption test.

What actually determines your number

Whether the VIN sits inside a live campaign. Bigger than mileage or trim. Four PTU campaigns, a fire recall on 132,099 vehicles and a dozen smaller ones are free; the same work outside them is a four-figure invoice.

The build date, not the model year. The PTU campaigns are defined by production ranges that overlap model years at both ends, so two identical 2019 Cherokees can sit in different campaigns.

Whether the vehicle has sales code DK4. A front-drive KL has no power transfer unit, and the three most expensive entries here do not exist for it.

Which model years you own. 2014 and 2015 alone account for 4,428 of the 9,971 complaints in our sample: partly launch defects, partly a nine-speed that arrived before its calibration.

Whether the part has a document behind it. Item 1 is the most-complained-about failure and has no recall covering shift quality. Item 9 has a recall and no remedy. Item 8 has both.

Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labour-heavy work, but campaign work must go to a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram dealer. The comparison maps which jobs go where.

Water, for two items only. The liftgate recall and the parking brake investigation are one puddle in one corner of the vehicle.

The tell. A jolt between second and third at light throttle, a downshift that lands hard, a hesitation before the vehicle moves: owners use the same words a decade apart, "very hard shifting in lower gears," "lunges forward when downshifting." The second tell is a message โ€” Service Shifter, with every gear letter on the console lighting red at once. In NHTSA's complaint database for 2014-2023 Cherokees, pulled 10 September 2026, 1,366 complaints contain "Service Shifter" and 869 describe a transmission symptom alongside a jerk, shudder, hesitation, harsh shift, slip, lurch or jolt, at a median odometer near 30,000 miles.

What it actually is, and what the documents do not say. Three campaigns touch the 948TE. 16V-529 describes hardware: "The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral." 19V-447 covers 2014 vehicles with the 3.2 where "a stuck valve in the transmission valve body may prevent proper clutch de-activation and result in a transmission-commanded shift to neutral." 18V-739 covers 2019 vehicles with the 2.4 whose calibration risked a stall on deceleration. All three are about an unexpected neutral or a stall. None is about how the vehicle shifts on a Tuesday morning.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The software level, checked and written down, before any hardware conversation: two of the three are pure reflashes, and a vehicle that never had them is running calibrations FCA replaced years ago. Fix it yourself โ€” the evidence, not the repair. Drive the same route three times and note the speed, gear change and throttle position where the jolt happens, and whether the engine was cold. A shop that hears "it jerks sometimes" writes "could not duplicate"; a shop that hears "second to third, 18 to 24 mph, light throttle, first ten minutes from cold" reproduces it. The honest limit: anything inside the case, where a valve body needs a factory relearn.

Where this does not apply. A 2020 or later Cherokee is outside all three. A jolt that appears only alongside a Service 4WD message is items 7 to 9 instead.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Print the current TCM and PCM software levels, and tell me whether 16V-529, 19V-447 or 18V-739 shows open on this VIN, before we discuss a valve body."

The tell. The parking brake engages on its own, usually at low speed or reversing, and the vehicle stops. Or the reverse: it will not release. 342 complaints in our sample describe a parking or emergency brake engaging, sticking or refusing to release, at a median odometer near 48,800 miles.

What it actually is. Water, and a module in the wrong place. FCA's bulletin 08-060-16, dated 11 May 2016 for 2014-2016 KL Cherokees built on or before 15 February 2016, is titled "Electronic Parking Brake Module Connector Water Intrusion" and describes the symptom exactly: "the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) may not release and a service message is present." It names codes C008E-00, C10CD-01 and C10ED-00, and puts the module "in the back left side of the cargo area interior, near the spare tire." NHTSA opened PE22-009 on 80 complaints in July 2022 and found "evidence supporting a total of 1,655 subject vehicles that likely experienced a failure of the subject EPB," 2014 worst at "approximately 0.58%." It closed the case on 29 October 2023 without a recall, adding the sentence that matters: "The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist."

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Lifting the left rear cargo trim and looking, before anyone quotes a module. A connector caught while merely damp is a different repair from one that has sat in water for a year. Ask which of the three bulletin codes is stored: a switch code and an internal module code are not the same conversation.

Where this does not apply. A 2017 or later Cherokee was a peer vehicle in PE22-009, not a subject vehicle. A parking brake warning with no water and no stored EPB code is likelier a rear pad wear circuit.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Check the parking brake module connector in the left rear cargo area per bulletin 08-060-16, tell me which code is stored, and photograph it before replacing anything."

The tell. Often none at all, which is the problem. Where there is one, owners describe a liftgate that opens or closes by itself, stops working, or a burning smell from the rear. 120 complaints in our sample name the liftgate, seven carrying a crash or fire flag โ€” several describing the liftgate and the parking brake failing in the same week.

What it actually is, and why the count of campaigns matters. 23V-338 covers 132,099 model year 2014-2016 Cherokees with the power liftgate, built 27 February 2013 to 9 September 2015, and the defect line is short: "An electrical short in the power lift gate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off." Now the part almost nobody reports: NHTSA's record states that this recall supersedes 15V-393 and 15V-826, and that "Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed." Three campaigns, nine years, one module โ€” and FCA's quarterly report for the fourth quarter of 2025 shows only 53,398 of 132,099 remedied.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Reading which campaign was performed rather than whether one was. An owner told in 2016 that "the liftgate recall is done" has a completed 15V-393 and an open 23V-338 โ€” and the second is the fire one. A burning smell from the rear here is a park-it-outside situation.

Where this does not apply. A Cherokee without the power liftgate option is outside all three campaigns, as is any 2017 or later vehicle.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Check this VIN against 23V-338 specifically, not 15V-393 or 15V-826. That one supersedes them, so I want the completion date for campaign 49A in writing."

The tell. The engine cuts while the vehicle is moving, often at low speed or in a turn, sometimes with no warning lamp. Owners describe restarting at the roadside and driving on as if nothing happened โ€” the pattern that makes a shop write "could not duplicate." 1,133 complaints in our sample describe a stall or an engine shutting off while driving, heaviest on 2014 and 2019.

What it actually is, and the three documents behind it. Not one fault. 18V-739 is a calibration: 86,053 model year 2019 Cherokees with the 2.4, built 1 October 2017 to 15 October 2018, with the estimated defect rate at 100%. 17V-670 is mechanical and tiny: 357 vehicles, 2018 Cherokee and Compass with the 2.4, where "the engines may have a cracked oil pump housing." 18V-282 is a fire risk rather than a stall: 48,990 model year 2018 Cherokees with a "skived fuel tube, which may result in a fuel leak and potentially a subsequent engine compartment fire."

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The oil level on a 2.4 Tigershark, before anything else: several stall complaints in our sample describe an engine that shut down because it was low on oil, not because anything electrical failed. Where this does not apply. A 3.2-litre V6 is outside all three 2.4-litre campaigns. A stall with a Service 4WD message is items 7 to 9; an engine that cranks but will not catch is a different guide.

The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that goes quiet under hard pressure is the wear indicator at roughly 3 mm; grinding is a different sound and a different bill. 54 complaints in our sample name pads, rotors, calipers or a pedal going to the floor โ€” a small number against 9,971, and worth saying plainly: brakes are not what makes this vehicle unusual.

What it actually is. Ordinary consumption, plus one narrow document. 18V-523 covers 154,335 vehicles across four models, and its Cherokee entry is model year 2019 built 4 April 2018 to 21 June 2018 โ€” eleven weeks โ€” where vehicles "may have been built with rear brake calipers with out-of-specification chrome coating on the pistons, causing gas pockets to form in the brake system." The remedy is short: bleed the rear brakes. A completed brake recall here means air was removed, not that a caliper was replaced. The cheap cause that gets skipped. Pad thickness in millimetres, before agreeing to anything. Above 4 mm you are buying time you already own, and a squeal on the first two stops of a damp morning is surface rust. Our pad guide and rotor guide cover pricing.

Fix it yourself โ€” the measurement, not the job. Most KL wheels let you see the outer pad through the spokes with a torch. Compare left to right, write the reading down with the date, repeat in three months: two dated readings turn "you need brakes" into a rate of wear. The honest limit: the caliper, where a mishandled parking brake actuator leaves a rear brake that works until it does not.

Where this does not apply. A 2020 or later Cherokee is outside 18V-523, as is a 2019 built outside those eleven weeks. A brake warning lamp with no noise may well be item 2.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Give me pad thickness in millimetres and rotor measurements against minimum spec, written on the order, and check whether 18V-523 applies to this build date."

The tell. An oil light between services, and a dipstick that reads low at every check. Owners quote the same figure: a quart every 1,000 miles. 151 complaints in our sample name oil consumption, burning oil or adding a quart, concentrated on 2016-2019 vehicles at a median odometer near 49,000 miles. The second, separate tell is a puddle: 49 complaints name the oil filter housing, the plastic assembly on the V6 that seeps and then cracks.

What it actually is, and what we could not find. Two unrelated things on two engines. The 2.4 Tigershark consumes oil through the piston ring package, and what matters is what happens when the level falls far enough: several complaints describe the engine shutting itself down mid-drive. We searched NHTSA's records and found no recall, no investigation and no published warranty extension covering oil consumption on this engine. That absence is the item. The housing is a different engine's story: the 3.2 Pentastar mounts its filter in a thermoplastic housing that hardens with heat cycles.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Starting the documented consumption test before you need it. Consumption is assessed against measured mileage from a documented top-up, and an owner who has quietly added oil for a year has no measurements and no case. Where this does not apply. A 3.2 V6 does not have the Tigershark consumption pattern, and a 2.4 does not have the Pentastar housing; on a 2.0 turbo you have neither.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Open a formal oil consumption test with the starting odometer and quantity on the repair order, and record the result even if it passes."

Which Jeep Cherokee recalls are open on my vehicle right now, and what does each one actually pay for? Four campaigns cover the power transfer unit and every remedy is free of charge, but they are not the same remedy. Recall 20V-343 covers 67,248 model year 2014 to 2017 vehicles and 23V-302 covers 25,980 model year 2016 to 2017 vehicles, and both flash software that engages rear wheel drive and applies the parking brake after a failure rather than preventing one. Recall 25V-011 covers 63,130 model year 2017 to 2019 vehicles, reprograms two modules to watch for wear, and replaces the unit when the software confirms a failure. Recall 26V-290 covers 61,711 model year 2019 to 2023 vehicles and has no remedy at all yet. Eligibility turns on the build date printed on your door jamb rather than the model year. The tell. On these two campaigns, by FCA's own account, there may not be one. Where owners do report a warning it is grinding or whining from the front, a vibration that grows with speed, then no drive at all. 1,271 complaints in our sample name the PTU, at a median odometer of about 69,750 miles, middle half 50,255 to 87,104.

What it actually is, and read the remedy twice. The two-speed PTU sits between the transmission and the front differential. 20V-343: "Relative movement in the PTU between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may result in the teeth of the input splines wearing off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU." Now the remedy, and this is the whole item: the dealer flashes "software that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in PARK by activating the parking brake if a failed input spline occurs." The teeth still wear off; the software catches the vehicle afterwards. 23V-302 extends the same remedy to 25,980 more vehicles, and FCA's annual report shows 17,219 of 25,980 completed as of April 2026.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Confirming the flash was performed, and separately whether the unit has started to wear. A completion date answers only the first; the second is a fluid inspection at the PTU, because metal in that fluid is the earliest physical evidence there is. Where this does not apply. A Cherokee without DK4 has no PTU. A vehicle built after 10 October 2016 is outside 20V-343, the day FCA started fitting "more robust differential input splines." A front-corner noise that changes with steering angle is more often a wheel bearing.

The tell. FCA writes it out for you, in the same sentence here and in 26V-290: "Customers may notice a Service 4WD message, noise, vibration or change in drive quality." 357 complaints in our sample describe a Service 4WD or 4WD System Unavailable message, and 2019 is the heaviest model year for PTU complaints, with 392.

What it actually is, and the exact condition for a new unit. A different defect from item 7 with the same consequence. 25V-011 covers vehicles "built with an improperly seated input shaft snap ring in the two-speed Power Transfer Unit," where a ring that is not fully seated "may allow uncontrolled movement of the input shaft inward," wearing the range shift sleeve and damaging splines or the range fork. The remedy is precise, and so is its limit. FCA's dealer instructions say: update the drivetrain control module and PTU software, test drive, and "Check for DTC C1494-07 (PTU Fork Position - Mechanical Failures). If C1494-07 is set, replace the PTU. If no code is set, return the vehicle to the customer." The same Part 573 also records a Warranty Extension, FCA campaign ID #XX1, "unlimited years/unlimited mileage," for affected customers experiencing messaging related to the defect. That sentence is worth more than most of this article.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Booking the free flash before the noise gets worse, not after a shop has quoted a replacement. The software qualifies you: it sets the code, and the code buys the part. FCA's remedy letters slipped from November 2025 to January 2026 to 19 February 2026, so a vehicle that got the interim letter in February 2025 waited a year. Warranty extensions are the least-claimed money in the industry.

Fix it yourself โ€” the record, not the repair. Photograph the cluster the moment a Service 4WD message appears, note date and odometer, and record thirty seconds of the noise. Three dated records turn an intermittent complaint into a documented one, and here that triggers the free part. The honest limit: the routine deciding your claim runs only on the factory scan tool.

Where this does not apply. A vehicle built before 10 October 2016 is item 7; one built after 20 February 2019 is outside this campaign, the date FCA started fitting properly seated snap rings. And no PTU means no item: check DK4 first.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Perform 25V-011, and if C1494-07 is not set today, print the stored codes and the date on my copy. I want the warranty extension referenced on the order."

Why does a free Jeep Cherokee recall sometimes end with the vehicle handed back unrepaired? Because recall 25V-011 has a condition written into its remedy, and most owners never see it. The dealer reprograms the drivetrain control module and the power transfer unit with software designed to detect wear, then road tests the vehicle and looks for one specific diagnostic trouble code. If C1494-07 is set, FCA replaces the unit free of charge. If it is not set, the instructions say to return the vehicle to the customer, and the visit ends with a completed campaign and an unchanged part. That is not a dealer refusing you, it is the campaign working as written, and the answer is to keep dated evidence of every Service 4WD message so the condition is documented when it recurs. The tell. The same sentence as item 8, because FCA reuses it: a Service 4WD message, noise, vibration or change in drive quality. 577 PTU complaints in our sample come from model years 2019 to 2023, and the filing dates say this is live rather than historical: 484 were filed during 2025 and another 293 in the first eight months of 2026.

What it actually is, and what the document says about the fix. 26V-290 was filed on 7 May 2026 and its defect description is blunt: "An internally failed PTU can cause an unexpected and unrecoverable Loss of Motive Power at any speed or rolling in PARK." The chronology records 387 warranty claims as of 22 April 2026, with one accident and one injury. Then the remedy section says, twice: "The remedy is under development." Dealers were notified on 14 May 2026, VINs became searchable the same day, and interim owner letters went out from 25 June 2026, telling owners that "the remedy for this condition is not currently available" and asking them to register at recalls.mopar.com to be told when parts exist. As of this writing no remedy has been published.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Registering for the parts notification the day you read the letter instead of the day the vehicle stops, and filing an NHTSA complaint if it has already failed. Neither costs anything, and with no remedy date the notification list is the only mechanism there is. Keep any invoice you have already paid. And get the stored code written down: a Service 4WD message on a 2020 vehicle can also be a wheel speed sensor or a front hub, and those are cheap.

Where this does not apply. A vehicle built before 12 December 2018 is item 8, unless it falls in the ten-week overlap. A 2019 to 2023 Cherokee without DK4 is outside the campaign. And "no remedy available" is not "do not drive": FCA has issued no such advisory here.

At the shop โ€” say this: "This VIN is in 26V-290 and the remedy is under development. Document today's symptom and stored codes on a repair order anyway, so I have a dated record."

The tell. Depends which one. Power steering that goes heavy without warning is the rack. A clunk over bumps that becomes a pull is a control arm. 42 complaints in our sample name a steering rack, rack and pinion or a power steering failure, five carrying a crash or fire flag โ€” a high proportion for a small count.

What it actually is. Six narrow campaigns sharing one property: tiny populations and precise scopes, which is why they get skipped. 19V-637 covers 5,294 model year 2019-2020 vehicles where "the steering rack gear may break, possibly causing a loss of steering control." 20V-657 covers 698 model year 2021 Latitude and Limited vehicles where "one or both of the front lower control arms may fracture while driving," and owners "are advised to not drive their vehicles until they have been inspected and repaired if needed." 21V-310 covers 18,800 model year 2021 vehicles with an oil cooler hose that "may have a weakened hose wall that can rupture." 24V-239 covers 12,221 model year 2022 vehicles for a turn signal that fails to self-cancel. 18V-494 and 16V-284 cover 702 and 1,029 vehicles for front halfshafts that may fracture without warning.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The lookup, again, because populations this small never make the news: six campaigns totalling under 39,000 vehicles, against 61,711 in the PTU campaign alone. Otherwise, ask which joint or bush was measured rather than accepting "the front end is worn" โ€” our steering guide and the noise-when-turning guide separate the parts.

Where this does not apply. Every campaign here is defined by a build window measured in weeks, so a model year match means nothing on its own.

Why is the power transfer unit the line to stare at on a Jeep Cherokee price ladder? Because it is the only four-figure item here that four separate federal recalls have already tried to address, and whether you pay for it is decided by paperwork rather than by the part. Across 185 dollar figures we could parse from PTU complaints in our sample, the median quoted repair is about $3,300 and the middle half runs $2,500 to $4,000, at a median odometer reading near 69,750 miles. Inside 25V-011 that same work is free once the software sets the qualifying code. Inside 26V-290 nothing is owed yet because no remedy exists. Outside every campaign it is entirely yours. Two rows invert this guide rather than refine it. A Cherokee without sales code DK4 deletes three of the ten entries, including the one with an unfinished federal recall attached. A 2014-2016 with a power liftgate goes the other way: the item you never think about becomes the first thing to book, because it is the only entry whose failure mode in the document is fire.

Best and worst Jeep Cherokee years to buy, and what the lists get wrong

Search for Cherokee years to avoid and the answers converge: skip 2014 and 2015 for the nine-speed, treat 2016-2019 with caution, buy 2020 or later. None of it is wrong. It is built from complaint volume and survey scores, and both are poor proxies for what a repair costs.

What the complaint counts actually say. In NHTSA's public database, pulled on 10 September 2026, 2014-2023 Cherokees carry 9,971 complaints: 2,643 on 2014, 1,785 on 2015, 1,406 on 2016, 1,333 on 2017, 683 on 2018, then a jump back to 1,625 on 2019, and 289, 156, 48 and 3 for 2020 through 2023. The lists are right that 2014 and 2015 are noisy. They miss the 2019 spike, which is not age: it is a facelift year with its own campaigns that sits on the boundary of two PTU recalls at once.

Where the lists mislead. They rank by model year, and the three most expensive facts here are not model year facts. The PTU campaigns are defined by production windows that overlap model years at both ends; the liftgate fire recall depends on an option box; and a Cherokee without sales code DK4 has no power transfer unit at all, so the item that dominates this generation's reputation cannot happen to it.

And they under-weight the newest problem. Most rankings mark 2020-2023 as the safe end of the generation. Those are exactly the years inside 26V-290 โ€” not a reason to avoid them, but a reason to know the newest KL carries an unfinished federal recall.

The honest ranking, by what it costs you.

  • Best position: any Cherokee without sales code DK4. Three of the ten entries vanish, including the most expensive.
  • Often better value: a 2017-2019 with DK4 whose 25V-011 shows completed, with a warranty extension behind the part.
  • Buy with the campaign list printed: a 2014-2016, where 23V-338 is a fire recall fewer than half the population has had performed.
  • Buy with your eyes open: a 2020-2023, the cleanest list on paper and the only one with an unremedied recall on it.
  • Uncovered risk, ranked: the PTU at an owner-reported median near $3,300; then a transmission rebuild at $2,500 to $4,500; then the oil filter housing at $350 to $800.

What to check on the test drive. Run the eight-minute check above on the forecourt, in that order: ten minutes, no cost, a better filter than any model year list. It works on the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler too.

What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 โ€” the campaign question. "What shows open on this VIN, and specifically 26V-290, 25V-011, 23V-302, 20V-343 and 23V-338?" All free.

Checkpoint 2 โ€” the build date question. "What is the production date on the door jamb, and does this vehicle have sales code DK4?" Those two facts decide items 7, 8 and 9.

Checkpoint 3 โ€” the code question. "Which exact codes are stored, and is C1494-07 among them?" On item 8 this is the difference between a free power transfer unit and a $3,300 one.

Checkpoint 4 โ€” the diagnostic fee. "What is the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer. What a diagnostic should cost has the detail.

Checkpoint 5 โ€” the software question. "Print the current TCM, PCM and DTCM software levels." Two transmission campaigns and one PTU remedy are software, and nobody volunteers this.

Checkpoint 6 โ€” the authorisation ceiling. "Call me before anything over this figure." The dispute guide covers what to do when it is ignored.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Jeep Cherokee owners the most

Trap 1: the recall that was done, on the vehicle that was never repaired. The situation: a 2016 Cherokee at 78,000 miles, grinding at the front, Service 4WD message. What the shop says: "Your PTU recall was performed in 2021, so this is not that. The unit is out of warranty โ€” about three thousand." What is really happening: the remedy under 20V-343 and 23V-302 is software that "will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in PARK if a failed input spline occurs." It manages the failure; it does not stop the wear. Price versus bill: $0 for the flash already done, against an owner-reported median near $3,300 for the unit it was never going to save. Your protective question: "Does the completed recall repair the unit or manage the failure? Read me the remedy line."

Trap 2: the free part that turned on one code. The situation: a 2018 Cherokee at 62,000 miles booked in for 25V-011 after two Service 4WD messages in a month. What the shop says: "We performed the recall. No fault codes present, so there is nothing to replace." What is really happening: the campaign working exactly as written. The dealer instructions say to reprogram, road test, and replace the PTU only if DTC C1494-07 is set, otherwise "return the vehicle to the customer." Nothing was refused โ€” but an intermittent condition with no dated record is the version where you pay. Price versus bill: $0 with documentation, against $2,500 to $4,000 in owner-quoted figures without it. Your protective question: "Print today's stored codes and the date on my copy, and note the symptom I reported."

Trap 3: the liftgate recall that was already done twice. The situation: a 2015 Cherokee with two completed recalls in the file and a faint burning smell from the rear. What the shop says: "The liftgate module recalls were both closed years ago. Nothing open." What is really happening: 23V-338 supersedes 15V-393 and 15V-826, and NHTSA's record states that "vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed." The new one is the fire one. Price versus bill: a free afternoon at a dealer, against the failure mode the document names. Your protective question: "Check 23V-338 by number, and give me the completion date for campaign 49A."

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers โ€” the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is a specific person's story.

Scenario 1 โ€” the ten-week overlap. Take a 2019 Cherokee with DK4 at around 70,000 miles, near the median odometer of the PTU complaints we could parse, showing a Service 4WD message. Photograph the door jamb first. A build date before 20 February 2019 puts it inside 25V-011, where a remedy exists; a date after 12 December 2018 also puts it inside 26V-290, where the remedy is under development. Ask for both by number: it may be in both, in which case 25V-011 is the route with a repair attached today. Lesson: two campaigns can claim the same VIN, and only one of them can currently fix it.

Scenario 2 โ€” the code that is worth $3,300. Take a 2018 Cherokee at 62,000 miles with an intermittent Service 4WD message and a whine that comes and goes. Book 25V-011 and ask, before the visit, what condition triggers a replacement. The answer is a single code, and a vehicle that behaves on the day tests clean. Arrive with three dated photographs and a thirty-second recording, ask for the symptom and stored codes on the order, and the intermittent fault becomes a documented one. Free with the paperwork; $2,500 to $4,000 without it. Lesson: on a conditional remedy the evidence is the repair, and it costs nothing to collect.

Scenario 3 โ€” the flash that was never a fix. Take a 2016 Cherokee at 78,000 miles, 20V-343 completed years ago, now grinding at the front. The campaign is real and does exactly what its remedy says: engages rear wheel drive and holds the vehicle in Park after the splines have gone. Ask instead whether the fluid at the unit shows metal, and whether 23V-302 applies to this build date, since the second campaign exists because vehicles like this one were left out of the first. Lesson: read the remedy, not the completion date โ€” a closed recall can mean a managed failure rather than a repaired part.

Your situation right now: four playbooks

"2019-2023 with DK4, no symptoms." Run the VIN today, and if 26V-290 shows open, register at recalls.mopar.com for the parts notification. Being on the list is the whole of the available action.

"Service 4WD message, 2017-2019 vehicle." Book 25V-011 now. Photograph the cluster each time it appears and ask for stored codes on the order.

"2014-2016 with a power liftgate." Look up 23V-338 specifically, park outside until it is done, and do not accept 15V-393 or 15V-826 as an answer.

"Just bought one and nothing is wrong." Run the VIN, photograph the door jamb, confirm DK4, and bank a thirty-second recording of the front end.

After the repair: verify, then prevent

Verify within a week. Recall work: completion documented against the VIN with the campaign number on the invoice. PTU software: which modules were flashed, and to what level. Liftgate: the module relocated and the shield fitted, not merely inspected.

Keep the paperwork that proves scope. For 25V-011 that means the code list from the day of the visit, because the warranty extension is claimed against a condition rather than a date. For 26V-290, every invoice you have already paid.

Photograph the door jamb once. The build date is the most-used fact here and the hardest to get later.

Record the before and after. Thirty seconds from the same position is the cheapest proof of repair there is. The recording guide has the protocol, and our analysis of noise words in NHTSA complaints shows which ones precede an expensive repair.

Prevent the next one. A recall lookup once a year, PTU fluid inspected at every service on a DK4 vehicle, and the rear drains kept clear on a 2014-2016.

What we looked for and did not find. There is no NHTSA recall, no investigation and no published FCA warranty extension covering oil consumption on the 2.4-litre Tigershark, and none covering ordinary nine-speed shift quality. There is also no formal ODI investigation into the KL power transfer unit: NHTSA sent FCA a pre-investigation request about loss of motive power and the scope of the first two campaigns on 23 April 2024, which the 26V-290 chronology records, but no investigation number was opened. Owners describe an FCA warranty extension for the PTU under a campaign ID different from the one printed in the 25V-011 report, with terms they quote inconsistently; we could not open a primary document for it, so only the printed terms appear above. Shop estimator pages were behind a Cloudflare block, so every price marked โšช comes from their search-result summaries.

Methodology. Document numbers, populations, production windows and defect wording were taken from the Part 573 reports, dealer service instructions, owner letters, completion reports and ODI resumes themselves, downloaded from NHTSA's document server and read as text. Owner-reported figures come from NHTSA's public complaints database for the Jeep Cherokee, model years 2014 to 2023, pulled on 10 September 2026: 9,971 complaints, of which 330 carry a crash or fire flag. Topic counts were produced with our own narrow regular expressions run against the complaint summary text and spot-checked by reading samples. That narrowing matters: a naive match on "transmission" returns 2,406 complaints here, most of them mentioning it inside a story about something else, and a naive match on "brake" returns 1,425 of which only 54 describe pads, rotors, calipers or a pedal fault. Complaint text is an owner's account, not an audited invoice. Prices are US ranges; dealer pricing typically runs 30-50% higher. Recall eligibility depends on your VIN and build date.
