The Highlander is the three-row SUV people buy specifically so they never have to think about it, and by the numbers that bet pays. RepairPal puts its average annual repair cost at $489, against $573 for midsize SUVs and $652 across all vehicles, with about 0.3 unscheduled shop visits a year and a reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0, seventh of twenty-six.

Which is exactly why Highlander bills feel unfair when they arrive. You spend six years paying for oil changes and tires, then a number with a comma in it appears at a counter and you have no frame of reference for whether it is real.

Here is the thing that changes those conversations. Five of the ten items below carry a Toyota campaign number, and two of those campaigns are still open in September 2026. One of them sits directly on top of the most expensive failure the Highlander has โ€” and almost nobody claims it, because Toyota's own warranty policy forbids dealers from advertising it to you.

By the end you will know which of the ten is due at your mileage, what each costs in 2026, which ones Toyota may still pay for, and the cheap cause that gets skipped when the expensive one is quoted first.

One rule overrides everything else: the mileage in each heading is when the part starts talking, not when it breaks. A pump weeps for weeks before it dumps; a corroded hybrid connector makes radio static long before it refuses to start. Every window below is an invitation to spend $0 on a look, not a prediction of a bill.

First: which Highlander do you actually have?

  • 2001-2007 (XU20) โ€” first generation, on a Camry platform. The 2002 and 2003 cars carry the engine complaints that anchor every worst-years list.
  • 2008-2013 (XU40) โ€” the 3.5-litre 2GR-FE V6 era, and the start of the oil-leak story that dominates high-mileage examples.
  • 2014-2019 (XU50) โ€” a six-speed automatic through 2016, then the UA80 eight-speed arrives with the 2017 refresh and brings the most expensive defect on this list.
  • 2020-2025 (XU70) โ€” the 3.5-litre 2GR-FKS V6, then a 2.4-litre turbo four from 2023.

The hybrid split, which deletes half this list and adds its own. A Highlander Hybrid uses an eCVT: no torque converter, no clutch packs, no valve body, so the UA80 item does not exist for you and pads last far longer. What you gain instead is a high-voltage list generic guides never mention โ€” a corrosion program on 2020-2022 all-wheel-drive cars and a brake actuator story on 2008-2010 cars.

The drivetrain split. All-wheel drive adds, on hybrids, the rear traction motor cable that program 22TE09 is about; front-wheel-drive hybrids are not in that program at all. If you are unsure which engine you have, count the ignition coils: six means V6.

The 5-minute check that dates your Highlander better than the odometer

Do this cold, before you read the ten items.

  1. Fold and unfold both second-row seat backs, then push hard on the top of each. Any rock, click or refusal to latch on a 2021-2024 car โ†’ item 1, and there is an open safety recall.
  2. Start it and stand at the front for thirty seconds. A rattle for one to two seconds at start only on a V6 โ†’ variable valve timing waiting on oil pressure. Deep knock that does not fade โ†’ reread the triage box.
  3. Look under the front with a flashlight while it idles. Pink is coolant (item 7); red-brown is transmission; dark amber at the front is item 8.
  4. Drive it under real load โ€” up a ramp, or to merging speed. A rising whine that tracks road speed, or a harsh shift, on a 2017-2018 car โ†’ item 4.
  5. Tune a Hybrid to an AM station and drive normally for ten minutes. Static that comes and goes with the drive cycle on a 2020-2022 all-wheel-drive Hybrid โ†’ item 6, and it is covered.
  6. Press the lower front bumper cover. A loose or gapping cover on a 2020-2023 car โ†’ recall 23V-720, and item 1.

What actually determines your number

Whether a recall or Customer Support Program applies. The largest single lever here, and free to check: two items below have run at $0 for owners who asked and four figures for those who did not.

Which transmission you have. The UA80 eight-speed in 2017-2018 cars has a specific defect with a specific program; the six-speed before it and the eight-speed after it do not share that story.

Gas or hybrid. A hybrid removes the torque converter and clutch packs and stretches pad life far past a gas car's, adding high-voltage cabling, a brake actuator and an inverter instead.

Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labour-heavy work โ€” except program and recall work, which only a Toyota dealer can perform. The full comparison maps which jobs those are.

Whether you tow, and how loaded you drive. A Highlander lives near gross weight in a way a compact SUV never does, and that duty accelerates cooling, fluid and suspension items.

How long the symptom ran. A misfire ignored poisons a converter; a weep becomes a head gasket; a whine outlives its program window.

What it actually is. You fold a second-row seat back, put it upright, and it rocks under a hand push or clicks back a notch โ€” or nothing is noticeable at all. NHTSA recall 26V-128 covers certain 2021-2024 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles: "The second-row seat backs may fail to lock into position during seat back adjustment." The remedy is free replacement of the recliner return springs.

The cheap cause that gets skipped โ€” and here it is the entire repair. Five minutes at a keyboard. Run your VIN through both Toyota's owner lookup and NHTSA's federal database, because they occasionally show different things, and recall work carries no charge, no mileage limit and no expiry.

Four more to check on the same visit. Recall 23V-720, 750,795 2020-2023 Highlanders, front bumper cover coming loose. Recall 23V-480, 2023 cars, a spiral cable weld that can deactivate the driver's airbag โ€” and 25V-040 covers 1,716 vehicles "incorrectly repaired under previous NHTSA recall number 23V-480." Where this does not apply. The seat-back recall names 2021-2024 only: a 2020 or 2025 car is not in it, and neither is the Grand Highlander, a different vehicle with its own list.

What it actually is. The air goes from cold to cool to warm over a few weeks, with no warning light, because the climate system does not set one for low refrigerant. CarComplaints lists A/C condenser damage as the worst reported problem on the 2020 Highlander, with a typical repair cost of $1,400 at an average of about 20,550 miles and a severity rating of 7.2.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Not every warm-air complaint is a condenser: a leaking Schrader valve, a shrunken O-ring or a tired compressor seal all present the same way, and all are found the same way โ€” an evacuate-and-recharge with ultraviolet dye at $180-$350, then a look under a black light a week later. Look through the grille yourself first, because bent fins in a small area or an oily patch collecting dust is the signature of a puncture.

Where this does not apply. Pre-2020 cars place the condenser behind more structure and this failure is far less prominent in their complaint record. In a garage-kept car that never sees gravel, warm air at 20,000 miles is more likely a seal than a stone.

What it actually is. Two unrelated campaigns produce the same feeling. Recall 20V-682 covers certain 2017-2019 Highlander vehicles among 1,525,742 Toyota and Lexus cars, where "the low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail" and "the engine can stall while driving." Recall 20V-162 is different: 38,810 certain 2020 Highlander vehicles equipped with a 3.5 L, V6 (2GR-FKS) gasoline engine with an "Engine Control Unit (ECU) programming error" affecting stop and restart.

The cheap cause that gets skipped, and it is not a cause at all โ€” it is free money. Run the VIN. A fuel pump replacement runs $1,557-$1,681 outside a campaign, plus $120-$200 to diagnose the stall, and owners in the 2017-2019 window have paid the lot for a repair a dealer would have done for nothing. Where this does not apply. These year ranges are exact and they are not each other's. A 2020 Highlander is not in the fuel-pump recall; a 2018 is not in the stop-and-restart recall; the four-cylinder 2020 cars are outside 20V-162, which names the 3.5-litre V6 specifically.

What it actually is. A high-pitched whine that rises with road speed rather than engine speed โ€” prove it by coasting in neutral โ€” plus harsh shifts, reduced power under load, and eventually a warning light. Toyota's bulletin POL19-04 describes it exactly: "a whine noise from the transmission while driving, harsh shifting, reduced power, and master warning light/check engine light illumination โ€ฆ equipped with a model UA80 transmission," caused by "a washer tab โ€ฆ not sufficiently bent during assembly."

The coverage, which is the whole reason this item exists. "Primary Coverage offers the Customer Support Program until October 31, 2020, regardless of mileage. After the Primary Coverage, the Secondary Coverage is applicable for 10 years from the vehicle's date of first use, regardless of mileage." Read that twice โ€” it is not a mileage limit.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Nobody asks. The bulletin says "Direct marketing of this Customer Support Program is strictly prohibited pursuant to the Toyota Warranty Policy 5.21," so your dealer may not phone and tell you โ€” yet its own inspection operation LHG44A is half an hour: "Inspect the transaxle." The alternative is what CarComplaints records for the 2017 model year: transmission failure at a typical repair cost of $8,600 and an average of about 57,600 miles. Where the symptom is softness rather than noise, a fluid change at $278-$352 comes first.

Where this does not apply. ZJC names the UA80 in certain 2017-2018 Highlander and Sienna vehicles and nothing else: a 2014-2016 car has the six-speed, a 2019 car is not in it, and a Highlander Hybrid has an eCVT and no UA80 at all. At the shop โ€” say this: "I have a whine that tracks road speed and a harsh shift. Check my VIN in TIS against Customer Support Program ZJC for the UA80 transmission, and perform the transaxle inspection under it before we discuss anything I would pay for."

Are Toyota Highlander repairs actually cheap compared with other three-row SUVs? Yes, and the gap is wide enough to change buying decisions. RepairPal puts the Highlander's average annual repair cost at $489 against $573 for midsize SUVs and $652 across all vehicles, with roughly 0.3 unscheduled shop visits a year. The reason Highlander bills still shock owners is distribution rather than size: the vehicle costs almost nothing for years, then presents one clustered event to somebody with no recent frame of reference for repair pricing. That is why this guide is organised by mileage window rather than by severity, and why every item names its own cheap cause. There is a second reason specific to this vehicle. Five of the ten items here carry a Toyota campaign number, so the difference between a $0 outcome and an $8,600 one is frequently one question asked at the right counter. What it actually is. On a gas car, normal consumption: a thin high squeal at roughly 3mm of pad, replaced at $309-$373 per axle. On a 2008-2010 Hybrid there is no noise at all โ€” a brake warning light, a slip indicator, or a pump that whirs too long โ€” and Toyota's bulletin ZKC (POL19-06) named the brake actuator assembly and brake booster pump, verified by "DTCs C1391, C1252, C1256 or C1253."

Say the window is closed, because it is. ZKC ran "until December 31, 2020, regardless of mileage," then secondary coverage for "10 years or 150,000 miles from the vehicle's date of first use, whichever occurs first." A 2010 car first used in 2010 left that window around 2020, so this is history rather than a claim you can file โ€” but it names the failure and the four codes precisely.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. On both versions the skipped step is a measurement, not a part. On a gas car, ask for pad thickness in millimetres front and rear โ€” above 4mm you are buying time you already have. On a hybrid with a brake light, ask for the stored codes read out and written down, because C1391 and its neighbours point at the actuator while a low-fluid warning points at pads; the gap between a pad job and a $1,286-$1,544 booster is the whole reason to look.

Where this does not apply. ZKC named 2008-2010 Highlander Hybrid only โ€” a 2011 or later hybrid is not in it, and no gas Highlander has this actuator. Never open a hybrid's brake hydraulics yourself: the actuator holds accumulator pressure and needs a scan tool to bleed.

At the shop โ€” say this: "What is the pad thickness in millimetres, front and rear, and are the rotors above minimum spec? If this is the hybrid with a brake warning light, read out the stored chassis codes and write them down first."

What it actually is. AM radio static that comes and goes with the drive cycle on a car whose FM is perfect โ€” and later, warning indicators followed by a vehicle that will not start. Toyota's Customer Support Program 22TE09, updated May 18, 2023 with the line "Toyota has added 2020-2022 Highlander HV AWD to this CSP," covers "excessive corrosion at the connector of the HV Floor Under Wire Harness and Rear Traction Motor Cable" and joins both symptoms: "Excessive corrosion can cause AM Radio Static during certain drive cycles, or โ€ฆ the vehicle may not start."

The coverage, and its ceiling. "This coverage will be offered for 8 years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first)." That is a genuine limit, unlike ZJC's: a 2020 Highlander Hybrid doing 15,000 miles a year crosses 100,000 before it crosses eight years. The static you have been ignoring is a free repair right up until it is not.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Diagnosing the radio. Owners hear AM static, conclude the antenna or head unit is failing, and either live with it or price an aftermarket radio โ€” nobody connects a radio complaint to a high-voltage cable, which is exactly why Toyota wrote the symptom into the bulletin.

Where this does not apply. This is an all-wheel-drive hybrid program and nothing else: a front-wheel-drive Highlander Hybrid is not in it, no gas Highlander is, and a 2023 or newer hybrid is outside the production window. Salvage-titled vehicles are "NOT ELIGIBLE."

What it actually is. A sweet, syrupy smell after you park arrives well before any puddle, then a small pink wet patch near the front of the engine. Water pumps leak first through a weep hole so that you get notice, and that notice is typically weeks; what follows is a seized bearing or a sudden coolant dump, and on a hot aluminium V6 that means a warped head. Pump replacement runs $947-$1,269, and an overheat costs several times that.

The cheap cause that gets skipped, and here it runs the other way. A coolant smell with no visible drip is sometimes a radiator cap that no longer holds pressure, or a relaxed hose clamp, and either is trivially cheap. A shop quoting a pump without a cooling-system pressure test is guessing, and a coolant leak has half a dozen sources of which only one is the pump. Do the thermostat in the same visit, because it shares the drain.

Where this does not apply. A Highlander Hybrid uses an electric coolant pump and a separate inverter loop, so the belt-driven pump story is not yours. A car in a mild climate that never tows can pass 120,000 miles without this; if you tow, treat cooling as a scheduled 60,000-mile inspection.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Pressure-test the cooling system before quoting the pump, so we know it is not a cap or a hose. If it is the pump, quote the thermostat in the same job."

What it actually is, in four flavours. A dark patch under the front of the engine, a burnt-oil smell after a long drive, or a dipstick low between changes. The valve cover gaskets harden and weep; the oil pan gasket goes lower down and looks the same. The rubber VVT-i oil supply hose was a genuine defect โ€” Toyota's letter says it "may degrade over time โ€ฆ producing abnormal engine noise and the oil pressure light to illuminate." The front timing cover seam is the one owners fear, with owner-reported quotes in the $3,000-$5,000 range; that is what owners report being quoted, not a shop-price range we can source.

The campaign, and its exact scope โ€” narrower than the internet says. The dealer letter reads: "Extension of Limited Service Campaign (LSC) 90K / Certain 2005-2009 Model Year Avalon, Certain 2007-2010 Model Year Camry, Certain 2008 Model Year Highlander, Certain 2006-2009 Model Year Rav4, and Certain 2007-2010 Model Year Sienna Vehicles." One model year of Highlander, and the deadline is exact: "This LSC extension will be available until December 31, 2021."

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The dye test. A drip under a 2GR is assumed to be the timing cover because that is the famous one โ€” and the famous one is also the most expensive one. In practice the valve cover gaskets at $541-$764 are the far more common answer, so ask for an ultraviolet dye trace after a week of driving, photographed where the trace actually starts. Oil leak repair costs walk the same tree.

Fix it yourself โ€” the cheap half. Degreasing the bay, driving a week and photographing the fresh trace with a torch is a driveway job, and the most valuable hour you can spend before a quote. The honest limit: the rear bank sits against the firewall under the intake plumbing, and the timing cover needs accessory drive and mounts removed with the engine on a jack.

Where this does not apply. The four-cylinder Highlanders โ€” the 2.7-litre in 2009-2019 front-drive trims and the 2.4-litre turbo from 2023 โ€” have neither the 2GR VVT-i hose nor the timing-cover reputation. Unlike the RAV4 and Camry of that era, the Highlander also has no oil-consumption warranty enhancement: that program covers 2AZ-FE four-cylinders and names no Highlander.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Degrease it, run a dye test, and photograph where the trace starts before quoting me a timing cover. If it is a valve cover gasket, quote that separately."

What it actually is. A clunk over speed bumps and expansion joints, felt more than heard, from one corner โ€” and louder with the third row occupied, which is a clue rather than a coincidence. Later come floatiness over crests and patchy tyre wear an alignment does not cure.

The cheap cause that gets skipped, and it is worth real money. Fading is not clunking, and the two get merged at the counter. The clunk over bumps is far more often a stabilizer bar link, at $111-$186 installed against $970-$1,190 for shock or strut replacement, and links are confirmed by hand in about ninety seconds on a lift. Strut mounts and bushings are the other mid-priced possibility, checked in the same minute.

Fix it yourself โ€” the honest split. Stabilizer bar links are a genuine driveway job: two bolts per side, an hour, ordinary tools. Complete strut assemblies, sold pre-assembled with spring and mount, are doable in three to four hours on jack stands. The honest limit: never disassemble a strut to reuse the spring without a proper compressor and real experience, because a compressed coil spring stores enough energy to kill. Budget an alignment.

Where this does not apply. A car that has lived on smooth motorway miles and never carried a full third row can reach 150,000 miles with original struts that still measure fine. Ask for the evidence โ€” a wet housing, visible play, or a bounce test performed in front of you.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Before we discuss struts, check the stabilizer bar links and strut mounts on the lift and show me the play. If we do struts, are you quoting complete assemblies or loose struts?"

Which Toyota Highlander years are the best to buy used in 2026? The quietest recent stretch is 2014-2016, for a structural reason rather than a sentimental one: those cars have the six-speed automatic rather than the UA80 eight-speed, they predate the current generation's campaign list, and they sit past the 2008-2013 V6 oil-leak window. The years that need a document check rather than avoidance are 2017 and 2018, excellent vehicles carrying one specific transmission defect that Toyota still covers under program ZJC. The years to approach with real caution are 2002, 2003 and 2008, all of which carry high-cost engine complaints in CarComplaints' record at high mileage. Whichever year you look at, two checks answer more than any listing description: run the VIN for open campaigns, and drive it under load listening for a whine that tracks road speed. What it actually is. A steady check-engine light with P0420 or P0430, frequently with no drivability symptom at all, and often first noticed as a failed emissions inspection. The computer compares the oxygen sensor before the converter with the one after it, and when their readings converge the code sets โ€” which does not say the converter is broken, only that one test failed.

The cheap causes, all four. A lazy downstream oxygen sensor sets this code with a healthy converter, and sensors run $731-$853 installed against $1,967-$2,202 for a converter, or $1,349-$1,803 on a 2019 car. A small exhaust leak upstream skews the readings for a fraction of either; worn spark plugs cause a misfire that both sets codes and cooks the converter, at $507-$788 on the V6 or $305-$373 on the 2023-2024 turbo four. The one demand that changes the conversation: Mode 6. Mode $06 is a standard OBD-II data mode reporting the catalyst monitor's test result as a number against its threshold, so a technician can show you how far from the limit you are rather than telling you it failed. Ask for the Mode 6 catalyst values in writing before authorising anything. Our guide to expensive codes covers it.

Where this does not apply. A P0420 under about 100,000 miles with full service history is much more likely a sensor or an exhaust leak. Converter theft applies to hybrids far more than gas cars, and a stolen one announces itself as a shockingly loud exhaust rather than a subtle code.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Before we replace a converter I want the Mode 6 catalyst values against threshold, the downstream sensor tested rather than assumed, and a check for exhaust leaks upstream. If it is the converter, tell me which bank."

Two rows there invert the guide rather than adjusting it. A 2020-2022 Hybrid all-wheel-drive owner should skip item 4 entirely โ€” there is no UA80 in that car โ€” and move that attention to item 6, where the early symptom is a radio complaint nobody takes seriously and the coverage has a mileage ceiling a school run reaches in six years. And a 2008-2010 Hybrid owner should treat a brake warning light as an actuator question with four named codes, because the pad-shaped answer there is a $1,286-$1,544 booster.

Best and worst Toyota Highlander years, and why the lists disagree

Most people searching for Highlander problems are really asking a second question, so here it is directly โ€” with the caveat that published rankings contradict each other more than they admit.

Where everyone agrees on the weak spots. The 2002, 2003 and 2008 cars, consistently, in CarComplaints' record: engine failure on the 2002 at about $4,600 and roughly 114,000 miles, stripped engine bolt threads on the 2003 at about $3,200, and on the 2008 an engine that turns over and will not start at about $3,900 and roughly 86,000 miles.

Where the lists fall apart: 2015 versus 2017. By raw complaint volume the 2015 car looks bad โ€” 87 complaints, the highest single-year count in CarComplaints' record for this model. Read what they are about and the picture inverts: the top categories are uncomfortable seats and wind noise. The 2017 car has far fewer complaints and a far worse one, transmission failure at a typical repair cost of $8,600 and an average of about 57,600 miles.

What that means in practice:

  • Least risk for the money: 2014-2016, the six-speed years.
  • Best value the reputation created: 2017-2018, bought with a ZJC check in hand.
  • Buy with a VIN check and nothing else: 2020-2025, where the whole list is campaigns.
  • Best long-term hybrid: 2023 and newer, past the 22TE09 production window entirely.
  • Buy with a torch and a dye test: any 2008-2013 V6, where the oil story decides the price.
  • Approach as a project, not a car: 2002, 2003 and 2008 without documentation.

What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 โ€” the write-up. "Can you read back what you have written as the complaint?" "Whine that rises with road speed, plus one harsh shift" produces a different diagnosis than "transmission problem."

Checkpoint 2 โ€” the VIN question. "Any open recalls or Customer Support Programs that cover this?" On a Highlander that is the most valuable sentence available, and it belongs before the estimate โ€” name ZJC or 22TE09 if your year fits, because the dealer is prohibited from raising them first.

Checkpoint 3 โ€” the diagnostic fee. "What is the charge, and does it apply toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer, usually credited. See what a diagnostic should cost if the number surprises you.

Checkpoint 4 โ€” the evidence. "Can you show me?" Pad thickness in millimetres, the pressure-test result, the Mode 6 values, the dye trace, the play in a link, the stored codes.

Checkpoint 5 โ€” the cheap cause. "Was it ruled out, and how?" Links before struts, dye before timing covers, fluid before internals, Mode 6 before converters.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Highlander owners the most

Trap 1: the covered transmission that gets quoted as a replacement. The situation: a whine that tracks road speed plus a harsh shift on a 2018 Highlander at 74,000 miles. What the shop says: "The eight-speed is going, and you are out of powertrain warranty." What is really happening: ZJC covers these symptoms on certain 2017-2018 Highlanders, with secondary coverage running ten years from date of first use, regardless of mileage. Price versus bill: $0 under the program against CarComplaints' $8,600 typical repair cost. Your protective question: "Check my VIN in TIS against Customer Support Program ZJC and perform the transaxle inspection under it before we discuss anything I would pay for."

Trap 2: the clunk that becomes a suspension job. The situation: a knock over bumps on a 2015 Highlander at 116,000 miles, louder with the third row occupied. What the shop says: "Struts all round, it is a heavy car." What is really happening: struts at that mileage are plausibly tired, but the clunk specifically is far more often a stabilizer bar link, checked by hand in ninety seconds. Price versus bill: $111-$186 for the link kit against $970-$1,190 for strut replacement. Your protective question: "Show me the play in the links and strut mounts first โ€” and if the struts are genuinely leaking, show me the wet housing."

Trap 3: the brake light on an early hybrid answered with pads. The situation: a brake warning light and an odd pedal on a 2009 Highlander Hybrid at 142,000 miles. What the shop says: "Pads and rotors all round, and bleed it." What is really happening: on a 2008-2010 Highlander Hybrid, program ZKC named the brake actuator and booster pump, verified by codes C1391, C1252, C1256 or C1253 โ€” pads do not set those codes. Price versus bill: a pad job that fixes nothing, against a booster at $1,286-$1,544 that might. Your protective question: "Read out the stored chassis codes and write them down. If C1391 or C1252 is in there, tell me how pads address it."

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers โ€” the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.

Scenario 1 โ€” the five-figure quote that is a program claim. A 2018 Highlander at 74,000 miles, whine and harsh shift, quoted for a transmission by a shop that read the powertrain warranty as expired. Ask a Toyota dealer to check ZJC against the VIN and the path becomes a half-hour transaxle inspection under a program whose secondary coverage runs ten years from first use. The uncovered version is the $8,600 CarComplaints records for 2017. Lesson: on a 2017-2018 Highlander, "check ZJC against my VIN" is worth more than any negotiating tactic, because Toyota is forbidden from saying it to you first.

Scenario 2 โ€” the four-figure oil leak that is a $600 gasket. A 2011 Highlander V6 at 148,000 miles with a dark patch on the driveway, quoted for a front timing cover on the engine's reputation alone. Ask for a degrease, a week of driving and a dye trace photographed at its origin, and the answer is very often a valve cover gasket at $541-$764. Lesson: the famous failure is famous because it is expensive, not because it is common. Make somebody prove which one you have.

Scenario 3 โ€” the condenser nobody looked at. A 2020 Highlander at 26,000 miles with warm air and no warning light, quoted a full condenser because that is the known item on this generation. Ask for a dye test first and the outcome splits: a seal or a valve is a $180-$350 conversation, a stone-holed condenser is the $1,400 CarComplaints figure with visible impact damage to prove it. Lesson: a known failure mode for your model year is a hypothesis, not a diagnosis, and the test that separates them costs less than a tenth of the repair.

How can you tell a real Highlander failure from an unnecessary repair quote? Use two tests on every line item. First, the VIN test: ask whether any recall or Customer Support Program covers the symptom, because five of the ten items in this guide carry a Toyota campaign number and the difference between $0 and $8,600 is frequently one question. Toyota's warranty policy prohibits dealers from marketing those programs to you, so the question genuinely has to come from your side. Second, the cheap-cause test: every failure here has one specific inexpensive cause that should be ruled out first. Links before struts. Dye before timing covers. Cap and hose before a water pump. "There is a noise and I cannot tell how bad." Record it โ€” thirty seconds, hood up, windows open, phone twelve to eighteen inches from the source, noise reduction off. The recording guide has the full protocol.

"150,000 miles and I am deciding whether to keep it." Price the specific items actually due โ€” usually the emissions cluster, a cooling item and whichever oil leak is actually leaking. On a documented V6 that number typically lands between $1,500 and $3,500 against a replacement three-row SUV at $40,000-plus.

After the repair: verify, then prevent

Verify within a week. Brakes: no squeal, straight stops, no pull. The whine: same road, same speed, coasting in neutral, to confirm it is gone rather than masked. Water pump: dry floor after three nights. Converter: light stays off through two drive cycles and the monitors set.

Get program work documented by number. If a repair was performed under ZJC, 22TE09 or a recall, make sure the invoice names the campaign โ€” that line protects you if the condition returns, and a future buyer's inspection will look for it.

Prevent the next one. Transmission fluid every 60,000 miles, and every 30,000 if you tow. Cooling inspected at 80,000, treated as scheduled rather than symptom-driven. A degrease-and-look at every oil change past 100,000 on a V6, and a VIN recall check every spring โ€” 26V-128 landed on 2021 model year vehicles in 2026.

Three boundaries worth stating plainly. First, LSC 90K names certain 2008 model year Highlanders and no other Highlander year โ€” the wider ranges quoted online belong to the Avalon, Camry, RAV4 and Sienna in the same document. Second, we found no oil-consumption warranty enhancement naming any Highlander, unlike the RAV4 and Camry of that era, and no Toyota bulletin number for a 2GR-FE timing-cover oil leak naming the Highlander; a shop citing one should be asked for the number. Third, eligibility depends on VIN and date of first use โ€” ZJC says "Verify VIN applicability by checking TIS before completing any repairs."
