Most oil consumption stories in this series end with the oil. This one does not.
The consolidated class action against General Motors described a chain rather than a symptom: piston rings prone to premature wear, leading to excessive oil consumption, leading to engine knocking, low oil pressure, fouled spark plugs, damage to the timing chains and eventually engine failures. Judge Robin L. Rosenberg gave final approval to a $42 million settlement on 15 November 2019, consolidating three separate actions — Berman, Hindsman and Sanchez v. General Motors. GM denied wrongdoing. It also, starting in 2014, issued Special Coverage Adjustments under service bulletins 14159, 15285 and 16118 that extended warranty coverage for piston replacement beyond the normal five years or 100,000 miles, and its own bulletin language defined the problem plainly: excessive consumption meaning less than 2,000 miles per quart, due to piston ring wear.
That is why this guide reads differently from the others. On most vehicles, oil consumption is a habit to manage. On this one it is the first link in a documented chain, and every item below either sits on that chain or is unrelated to it.

Find your engine first, then your mileage. Every entry has the same parts: the tell, what it actually is, the 2026 price, the cheap cause that gets skipped, and where this does not apply. One rule overrides everything: on a 2.4-litre Equinox, treat oil level as a safety-critical reading rather than a maintenance one. Low oil means low oil pressure. First: which Equinox do you actually have?
2010-2013 with the 2.4-litre Ecotec. The settled class, covered by the $42 million agreement and by the Special Coverage Adjustments in bulletins 14159, 15285 and 16118.
2014-2017 with the 2.4-litre EcoTec. Subject of a later class action alleging the same defect, filed in Missouri federal court, claiming consumption of as much as a quart per 1,000 miles.
Any Equinox with the V6. Outside the consumption story entirely. A different and much shorter version of this guide applies.
2018 and newer generations. Different engines and platform; the 2.4-litre story does not carry forward. Treat published failure mileages for these with caution.

The 5-minute check that dates your Equinox better than the odometer
- Pull the dipstick before starting, and write down what you see with today's date. On this vehicle that note is the beginning of your evidence file.
- Start it and stand at the front for thirty seconds. A rattle for one to three seconds that has been getting longer over months → item 3. A knock that does not fade, with an oil light → stop, and reread the triage box.
- Look at the spark plug records. Plugs fouling early is a documented consequence of consumption, not bad luck.
- Look under the front with a flashlight while it idles. Pink or orange wet patch is coolant — item 5.
- Drive it and note whether the engine feels rougher at idle than a month ago. Combined with any consumption, that is the chain moving.

What actually determines your number
Whether consumption was ever documented. On this vehicle that single fact governs coverage conversations, resale honesty and how seriously a shop takes the complaint. It costs nothing and almost nobody does it.
Where you are on the chain. Consumption alone is manageable. Consumption plus fouled plugs is more expensive. Consumption plus a lengthening cold-start rattle is a timing chain conversation. The chain only runs one direction.
Which engine you have. The V6 and later generations sit outside all of this.

Oil change discipline. Not a platitude here. The documented failure mechanism runs through oil pressure, and an engine already consuming oil has no margin for a long interval.
Whether a previous owner ran it low. The most consequential thing you cannot see. It is why the service folder matters more than the odometer on this model.
The ten problems, in the order they arrive
1 · Front brakes — 20,000 to 60,000 miles
The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that stops under hard pressure — the wear indicator at roughly 3mm. Grinding is low, gritty and felt through the pedal.
What it actually is. Normal consumption. City driving shortens it, highway driving stretches it.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A squeal only on the first two damp-morning stops is surface rust — free. Ask for pad thickness in millimetres; above 4mm you are buying time you already have.
Where this does not apply. A pulsation through the pedal rather than a squeal is rotor thickness variation, and if the rotors are still above minimum spec, resurfacing is cheaper than replacement — ask which they are quoting.
Fix it yourself — realistic. Front pads and rotors are a genuine driveway job: $120-$220 in parts, two to three hours, jack stands mandatory. The honest limit: uneven wear side to side or a seized slide pin means a caliper — stop, because a dragging caliper destroys new parts within weeks.
At the shop — say this: "What's the actual pad thickness in millimetres front and rear, and are the rotors above minimum spec? If they're above minimum and the complaint is pulsation, can we resurface rather than replace?"
2 · Oil consumption on the 2.4 Ecotec — 30,000 to 90,000 miles
The tell. The dipstick drops between changes with no visible leak. GM's own bulletin language set the threshold at less than 2,000 miles per quart, attributed to piston ring wear. The class action alleged worse in practice — roughly one quart per 1,000 miles.
What it actually is, and why the chain matters. The alleged defect is piston rings prone to premature wear. What the litigation described was not oil loss in isolation but a sequence: consumption, then engine knocking, low oil pressure, fouled spark plugs, damage to the timing chains, and eventually engine failures. Items 3 and 4 in this guide are the middle of that sequence.
What was covered, and when. Starting in 2014, GM issued Special Coverage Adjustments for 2010-2012 vehicles under bulletins 14159, 15285 and 16118, extending warranty for piston replacement beyond the standard five years or 100,000 miles; reporting indicates coverage eventually reached 7.5 years or 120,000 miles. Owners could present the vehicle for an oil consumption diagnosis and, if it showed excessive consumption within limits, receive free piston ring replacement. The settlement required a further adjustment for 2013 vehicles offering free diagnosis and free piston assembly replacement, plus reimbursement for owners who had already paid.
The honest note about timing. Those windows have closed for the affected model years. A piston job in 2026 is an owner expense, and on a vehicle of this value that is a genuine keep-or-sell decision rather than an obvious repair.
The cheap cause that is free and still decisive. A dated log. Date, mileage, quantity added, every time. Then ask for a documented consumption test with the result on the invoice. Consumption that is measured is a decision; consumption that is merely noticed is an argument you will lose.
Where this does not apply. V6 Equinox vehicles and later generations with different engines are outside this entirely.
At the shop — say this: "I'd like a documented oil consumption test with the result written on the invoice, measured against GM's own threshold of less than 2,000 miles per quart. And please check this VIN against any remaining special coverage adjustment."

3 · Timing chain — 40,000 to 110,000 miles
The tell. A rattle for one to three seconds at cold start that fades as oil pressure builds, sometimes with correlation codes in the P0016-P0017 family. The diagnostic detail is the trend: a noise that has grown from one second to three over months points at chain and guide wear, while a consistent short rattle points at the tensioner not holding pressure.
What it actually is, and why it belongs here. The chain tensioner is hydraulic and runs on engine oil pressure. An engine consuming oil runs closer to low, and the class action explicitly named damage to the timing chains among the consequences of the consumption defect. On this vehicle, chain wear is frequently a symptom of item 2 rather than an independent failure.
The cheap cause that gets skipped, and it is nearly free. Fresh oil of the correct grade, filled to the top mark, then a week of driving to see whether the rattle shortens. Any shop quoting chain work before confirming a correct oil fill has skipped the free step — and on this engine, confirming the fill also means confirming whether consumption is the underlying issue.

At the shop — say this: "Fresh oil at the correct grade first, filled to the top mark, then re-check in a week. And I want to know whether this engine is consuming oil, because if it is, the chain is a symptom and not the whole problem."
4 · Fouled plugs and misfire — 50,000 to 120,000 miles
The tell. A rough idle felt through the wheel at a stoplight, a stumble under acceleration, and a check-engine light. If the light is flashing, the misfire is severe enough to be pushing unburned fuel into the exhaust, which is how item 10 arrives early.
What it actually is. Oil reaching the combustion chamber deposits on the plug and stops it firing cleanly. That is why the class action listed fouled plugs alongside knocking and low oil pressure — same cause, different symptom.
The cheap cause that gets skipped — and the question that matters more. New plugs are cheap and will fix the misfire. The question nobody asks is how long they last. Plugs that foul again within 20,000 miles are telling you the consumption underneath is unaddressed, and that is worth knowing before you spend anything larger.
The free confirmation. The code names the cylinder. Swap the suspect coil with a neighbouring cylinder's and clear the code: if the misfire follows the coil, it is the coil; if it stays, it is the plug or what is reaching it.
Where this does not apply. On a V6 Equinox, fouled plugs are an ordinary maintenance item rather than a symptom of a documented chain, and this paragraph does not apply.
At the shop — say this: "Can you note the plug condition — specifically whether they're oil-fouled — and record the mileage, so we know how quickly they foul again? And swap the coil to confirm the cylinder before ordering parts."
5 · Water pump and thermostat — 60,000 to 120,000 miles
The tell. A sweet, syrupy smell after parking — coolant, and the smell arrives before any puddle. Then a small pink or orange drip near the front of the engine. Sometimes a light whine as the pump bearing wears.
What it actually is. Water pumps are designed to leak first through a weep hole, precisely so you get notice. That notice is typically weeks. What follows is a seized bearing or a sudden coolant dump, and on a hot engine that means a warped head — four figures instead of several hundred.
The cheap cause that runs the other way. A coolant smell with no drip is sometimes a radiator cap or a hose clamp. Ask for a cooling system pressure test — fifteen minutes, and it shows exactly where pressure escapes.
Do this at the same time. The thermostat shares the coolant drain. Adding it costs little in parts and almost nothing in labour, and removes a future visit.
Where this does not apply. On an engine already flagged for oil consumption, do not let a coolant conversation displace the oil one — they are separate systems and separate budgets.
At the shop — say this: "Can you pressure-test the cooling system before quoting the pump, so we know it isn't a cap or a hose? And if it is the pump, quote the thermostat in the same job since the system's already drained."
How much oil is a Chevy Equinox supposed to use before it counts as a defect? 6 · Wheel bearings — 70,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. A hum from around 40-50 mph rising with road speed and changing when you steer gently — that steering sensitivity names the side.
What it actually is. Rolling elements wear and the assembly develops play. It worsens steadily and can eventually affect wheel-speed sensor readings and trigger ABS warnings.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A worn or cupped tire produces nearly the same drone. Rotate and drive: if the noise moves, it is tires.
The free confirmation. With the vehicle safely supported, spin the wheel by hand listening for a gritty rumble, then rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock feeling for play.
Where this does not apply. If the hum does not change with steering input, look at the drivetrain instead — on an all-wheel-drive vehicle that includes the transfer components.
At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I steer, so I think a bearing — but can we rotate the tires first, and show me the play by hand on the lift before ordering parts?"
7 · Air conditioning — 80,000 to 140,000 miles
The tell. Air that starts cold and fades warm after ten minutes, or never gets cold. Sometimes a clutch cycling rapidly, or no engagement click.
What it actually is. Refrigerant is not consumed, so a system that is low is a system that leaks. The condenser sits at the front and takes road debris — a genuine alternative explanation worth checking.
The cheap causes. A failed relay gives no cold air with a healthy system. A blend door actuator produces a similar complaint from inside the dash.
Where this does not apply. Cold air at the front vents but not the rear on a longer-bodied variant points at rear lines rather than the compressor, and that is a different and usually cheaper repair.
At the shop — say this: "Was a leak test performed, and where exactly is it leaking? Can you check the relay before condemning the compressor?"
8 · Transmission harsh shifting — 80,000 to 150,000 miles
The tell. Harsh or delayed shifts, hesitation before engagement, occasionally limp mode. Sometimes a check-engine light with P0700 and no drivability complaint at all.
What it actually is. P0700 means the transmission control module logged its own fault and raised a flag in the engine computer. A basic code reader sees only the flag; the actual fault lives inside the transmission module.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Reading the sub-codes, plus fluid condition. If the estimate says only "P0700," nobody has diagnosed anything. Our guide to expensive codes covers this pattern across manufacturers.
Where this does not apply. A shudder felt as you pull away from a stop, rather than a hard shift between gears, is a different complaint and should be described as such — the wording on the repair order determines the diagnosis.
At the shop — say this: "P0700 is a pointer code. What are the actual codes stored in the transmission module, and what's the fluid condition? I want both on the estimate before we discuss internal work."
Is a used Chevy Equinox with the 2.4 engine worth buying in 2026? It depends on one document rather than on the model year, and that makes it an unusually answerable question. 9 · Suspension: struts and the clunk that isn't them — 90,000 to 150,000 miles
The tell. A clunk or knock over speed bumps and expansion joints, felt more than heard, from one corner. Later: floatiness over crests and patchy tire wear.
What it actually is. Struts fade rather than fail, which is why most owners never notice until a newer vehicle feels startlingly composed.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The clunk over bumps is more often a sway bar end link — $40-$90 in parts, $150-$280 installed, against $700-$1,150 for a strut pair, and confirmed by hand in ninety seconds on a lift.
Fix it yourself — the honest split. End links are a genuine driveway job: two bolts per side, an hour, ordinary tools. The honest limit: never disassemble a strut to reuse the spring without a proper spring compressor and real experience — a compressed coil spring stores enough energy to kill. Buy the complete assembly or pay a shop.
Where this does not apply. A clunk that happens only when shifting between Drive and Reverse rather than over bumps is an engine or transmission mount, not suspension.
At the shop — say this: "Before we discuss struts, can you check the sway bar end links and strut mounts on the lift and show me the play? And if we do struts, are you quoting complete assemblies?"
10 · Catalytic converter — 120,000 miles and up
The tell. A steady check-engine light with P0420, often with no drivability symptom. Sometimes a faint sulphur smell. Frequently the first sign is failing an emissions inspection.
What it actually is. The computer compares the oxygen sensors before and after the converter; when their readings converge, the code sets. That does not say the converter is broken.
The cheap causes, all three. A lazy downstream sensor ($180-$350 installed). A small exhaust leak upstream. Sustained oil consumption or an unresolved misfire poisoning the substrate — which on this engine is the documented chain from item 2 arriving at its final destination.
The one demand that changes the conversation: Mode 6. Mode $06 reports the catalyst monitor's actual test result as a number against threshold. Ask for those values in writing before authorising anything.
Where this does not apply. If consumption is ongoing and unaddressed, a new converter is money spent into the same chain. Resolve or at least document item 2 first, or you will buy this part twice.
At the shop — say this: "Before we replace the converter I want the Mode 6 catalyst values against threshold, the downstream sensor actually tested rather than assumed, and the oil consumption question addressed first."
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up, and notice that three of the four red lines are the same problem at different stages. On this vehicle the ladder is not a list of independent risks — it is one sequence, and the free line at the top is where you get off it.
Your number, by which Equinox you drive
Two rows there invert the guide. A V6 owner can ignore items 2, 3, 4 and most of item 10, which removes the entire chain this article is built around. Should you buy a used Equinox, and which years?
Most people searching for Equinox problems are deciding whether to buy one, so here it is directly.
What the litigation actually establishes. Not that every 2.4-litre Equinox burns oil, but that the defect was real enough for GM to issue coverage adjustments across three bulletins and to settle three consolidated class actions for $42 million while denying wrongdoing. That is a well-documented risk rather than a rumour, and documented risk is easier to price than vague reputation.
What makes an individual vehicle safe or unsafe. Consumption history and whether pistons were replaced. A 2012 Equinox with a coverage-adjustment piston job in its file is a car whose known defect has been repaired at the manufacturer's expense. An identical car with no records and a quiet top-up habit is a different purchase entirely, and the two look the same in a listing.
The years that need the most care. 2014-2017, because they carry the alleged defect without the settled coverage. On those, consumption history is not a nice-to-have — it is the purchase decision.
The five-minute pre-purchase procedure:
- Ask for the service folder and look for piston work, plug changes and oil intervals.
- Pull the dipstick and ask directly how often oil is added between services.
- Cold start it yourself and listen for a rattle in the first three seconds.
- Ask whether the check-engine light has ever been on, and for what.
- Run the VIN past a GM dealer for any remaining coverage.

The short version: a V6 Equinox or a 2.4 with documented piston work is a normal used compact SUV. A 2.4 with no records is a lottery ticket on the most expensive chain in this guide.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 — the measurement question. "Can we do a documented oil consumption test and put the result on the invoice?" GM's own threshold was less than 2,000 miles per quart; bring the number.
Checkpoint 2 — the VIN question. "Does any special coverage adjustment still apply to this VIN?" Free to ask, and it has covered piston work.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Equinox owners the most

What the shop says: "A bit of oil use is expected at this age." Trap 2: the timing chain treated as an independent failure. The situation: a growing cold-start rattle on a 2.4-litre car at 96,000 miles. What the shop says: "Timing chain, $1,700. It happens on these." What is really happening: the quote may be correct, but the class action named timing chain damage as a consequence of the consumption defect. Replacing the chain without addressing why it wore leaves the cause running. Price versus bill: $1,700 spent once, or $1,700 spent and the underlying problem untouched. Your protective question: "Is this engine consuming oil? If it is, is the chain a symptom rather than the whole repair?"
Trap 3: the converter bought while the chain still runs. The situation: P0420 on a high-mileage 2.4-litre car that is also using oil. What the shop says: "Catalytic converter, $1,600." What is really happening: sustained oil consumption poisons the substrate. Fitting a new converter to an engine still feeding it oil is buying the same part twice. Price versus bill: $1,600, potentially again. Your protective question: "Before the converter — what are the Mode 6 values, and is this engine still consuming oil?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.
Scenario 1 — the threshold that ends the argument. An owner adding a quart every 1,200 miles is told it is normal. GM's own bulletin language defined excessive as less than 2,000 miles per quart. The measurement, documented on an invoice, converts an opinion into a manufacturer-defined standard. Lesson: on this vehicle the most valuable thing you can obtain is not a repair but a number.
Scenario 2 — the chain that was a symptom. A growing cold-start rattle at 96,000 miles on an engine that has been quietly consuming oil, quoted as a timing chain. The chain may genuinely need replacing; the consumption underneath still needs answering, because it is what wore it. Lesson: on this engine the question "cause or consequence" is worth asking on every quote.

Beyond that, ordinary discipline applies: a documented consumption test measured against GM's own threshold of less than 2,000 miles per quart, a tire rotation before a wheel bearing, sway bar links before struts, a pressure test before a water pump, Mode 6 values before a converter. Your situation right now: four playbooks
"It's using oil." Start a dated log tonight — date, mileage, quantity. Then book a documented consumption test and get the result on the invoice. Even with coverage expired, that document changes how a shop treats you and how honestly you can sell the vehicle.
"There's a cold-start rattle." Fill the oil to the top mark, drive a week, and see whether it shortens. Then ask the cause-or-consequence question before authorising chain work.
"Nothing's wrong, I just bought it." Check the oil level fortnightly, not monthly. Note plug replacement dates. Set an oil interval at the short end of the recommendation, particularly if you do short city trips. On this engine that habit is the whole preventive programme.
"140,000 miles and I'm deciding whether to keep it." Price the specific items due. If consumption is present and undocumented, the honest range for the chain — plugs, chain, converter — is $2,000-$4,000, against a replacement vehicle at $26,000-plus. If consumption is absent, this is an ordinary compact SUV and keeping it wins comfortably.
After the repair: verify, then prevent
Verify within a week. Brakes: no squeal, straight stops. Chain: rattle gone at cold start on three consecutive mornings. Misfire: no return code across two full drive cycles, and note the mileage so you can see how long plugs last. Water pump: dry floor after three nights.
Keep the invoice and the consumption test result. On this vehicle those two documents are worth more at resale than a fresh set of tires.
Keep the oil log running even after a repair. Consumption that returns is far easier to argue about with two years of dated entries than with a memory.
Prevent the next one. Oil at the short end of the interval, filled to the top mark, checked fortnightly. Plugs on schedule and their condition noted. Cooling system inspected at 90,000. Those three lines address four of the ten items above, because four of them are one problem.
Your action plan: 10 minutes, today, this week
Next 10 minutes — free:
- Pull the dipstick and start a dated log: date, mileage, level, quantity added.
- Note whether there is a cold-start rattle and roughly how long it lasts.
- Find the service folder and look for two things: piston work and plug replacement dates.
Today:
- Call a GM dealer with the VIN and ask whether any special coverage adjustment still applies.
- If there is a rattle or a misfire, record thirty seconds properly and run it through a free sound check.
- If you have a quote, ask the cause-or-consequence question before agreeing to anything.
This week:
- Book a documented oil consumption test if you are adding oil between services, with the result written on the invoice.
- Book plugs if there is no record within the interval, and ask for their condition to be noted.
- Bank a baseline recording of the engine while it is healthy, so any future change is a comparison rather than a guess.

- Consolidated class action settlement, final approval 15 November 2019 — order signed by United States District Judge Robin L. Rosenberg, approving a $42 million settlement resolving three actions: Berman v. General Motors, Hindsman v. General Motors and Sanchez v. General Motors.
- Settlement class definition — "All persons within the United States who purchased or leased, at any time before the Preliminary Approval Date, a new retail or used model year 2010, 2011, 2012, or 2013 Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain vehicle equipped with 2.4 liter Ecotec engines, manufactured prior to the Production Change." The cut-off date reported for class membership is 16 May 2019.
- Alleged defect and consequences — the class action alleged defective piston rings prone to premature wear causing excessive engine oil consumption, and described the engines as capable of burning one quart of oil every 1,000 miles, "which causes engine knocking, low oil pressure, fouled spark plugs, damage to the timing chains and eventually engine failures." General Motors denied the allegations and settled to avoid the time and expense of trial.
- GM Special Coverage Adjustments, service bulletins 14159, 15285 and 16118 — covering 2010, 2011 and 2012 model years. These extended warranty coverage for piston replacement beyond the normal expiry of five years or 100,000 miles. Under them, owners could present the vehicle for an oil consumption diagnosis and, if excessive consumption was diagnosed within time and mileage limits, receive free piston ring replacement. Reporting indicates coverage eventually reached 7.5 years or 120,000 miles for 2010-2012 owners.
- GM bulletin threshold language — "Some 2011 model year Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles, equipped with a 2.4L engine, may exhibit excessive engine oil consumption (less than 2,000 miles per quart of engine oil), due to piston ring wear."
- New Special Coverage Adjustment for 2013 vehicles — required by the settlement within 30 days of the effective date: "Settlement Class Members may take their Class Vehicles to authorized GM dealerships for free diagnoses and, if diagnosed as currently consuming excessive oil within New SCA time and mileage limits, receive free piston assembly replacement." The settlement also provided reimbursement for owners who had previously paid out of pocket for piston assembly replacement.
- Later class action covering 2014-2017 vehicles — filed in Missouri federal court, alleging 2014 to 2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles with the 2.4-litre EcoTec engine have one or more design defects causing consumption of as much as one quart of oil per 1,000 miles, and that General Motors had been aware of the problem since no later than late 2010.
Coverage adjustment eligibility depended on VIN, model year and time and mileage limits, and those windows have closed for the affected model years. Verify any current coverage with an authorised GM dealership before authorising paid work.
