Engine stalling without warning on a 2011-2013 vehicle: that is the documented TIPM fuel pump relay failure — get the VIN checked before anyone quotes you a fuel pump. More of this vehicle's expensive problems have a campaign number attached than any other in this series — and that is genuinely good news for an owner who checks.
The core item is documented in NHTSA's own words: the fuel pump relay inside the TIPM-7 may fail, causing the vehicle to stall without warning, and a vehicle stall increases the risk of a crash. That ran across recalls 14V530 and 15V115 and then a further campaign covering certain 2011-2013 Grand Cherokee and Durango vehicles already recalled under the first two. A class action followed — Velasco, et al. v. Chrysler Group LLC in the Central District of California — and Chrysler extended warranty coverage on the external fuel pump relays installed under the recalls, without admitting a defect. The current items are newer. 91,844 Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids from 2022-2026 sit inside a recall covering 320,065 vehicles for battery cells with separator damage that can cause a fire while parked or driving, with a park-outside advisory. Another recall, Chrysler's number 73C, covers more than 91,000 Grand Cherokee PHEVs for a hybrid control processor software error that can cause loss of drive power.
What has no campaign is the nine-speed transmission. That one is yours.

One rule overrides everything: on this vehicle, separate the campaign items from the uncovered ones before you spend a dollar. The stall, the battery and the drive-power software all have free remedies. The transmission and the air suspension do not. Knowing which column a symptom belongs in is worth more here than any negotiating technique.
First: which Grand Cherokee do you actually have?
2011-2013 with 3.6, 5.7 or 6.4-litre engines. The TIPM generation — fuel pump relay stall recalls and the subsequent class action.
2014-2016. Part of a separate campaign concerning the rotary gear selector and rollaway risk, an issue that received significant national attention.
Any vehicle with the ZF nine-speed automatic. Shared with Cherokee, Renegade and Compass, and the most-reported drivetrain complaint across the family. No recall.
2022-2026 plug-in hybrid (4xe). Two active campaigns: the battery fire recall with a park-outside advisory, and recall 73C for loss of drive power.
Any vehicle with air suspension. Adds a system with a reputation for cascading, expensive failures. The standard coil setup does not have this exposure.
The 5-minute check that dates your Grand Cherokee better than the odometer
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. On this vehicle, do it annually rather than once. New campaigns arrived in 2024 and 2025.
- On a PHEV, check whether the battery recall applies and whether it has been remedied. If it applies and has not, the advisory is to park outside and not charge.
- Start it and note whether anything electrical behaves oddly. Wipers, horn, windows, dash lights doing things you did not ask for point at the power module.
- Drive it through several light-throttle gear changes at 30-50 mph. Hunting, lurching or hesitation on a nine-speed is item 3, and there is no campaign for it.
- On an air-suspended vehicle, watch it settle after parking overnight. A corner that sits low in the morning is the first sign of item 6.
- Listen at 45 mph with the radio off and steer gently left and right. A hum that changes with steering is a bearing; one that ignores steering is drivetrain.

What actually determines your number
Whether the item has a campaign. The single largest variable on this vehicle. Recall remedies are free and completion is recorded; the transmission and air suspension are not.
When you last checked the VIN. New campaigns arrived in 2024 and 2025. A lookup from two years ago is not a current answer.
Your configuration. A coil-sprung V6 and an air-suspended plug-in hybrid share a badge and very little else in this guide.
Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labour-heavy work, but recall work can only be performed by a Chrysler dealer, and on this vehicle a meaningful share of the expensive items are recall items. The full comparison maps which jobs go where.
Whether software was checked first. On the transmission particularly, calibration before hardware is the difference between a few hundred dollars and a few thousand.
Vehicle mass and specification. This is a heavy vehicle with premium-adjacent components. Brakes, bearings and suspension all price above the compact SUVs elsewhere in this series.
The ten problems, in the order they arrive
1 · TIPM fuel pump relay and electrical faults — any mileage, 2011-2013
The tell. The engine stalls without warning while driving, or cranks but will not start. Alongside that, a wider pattern owners report and attribute to the same module: spontaneous engine starts, wipers or horn activating on their own, windows that stop working, and a fuel pump that will not prime.
What it actually is, in NHTSA's words. The fuel pump relay inside the Totally Integrated Power Module may fail, causing the vehicle to stall without warning. The stated consequence is that a vehicle stall increases the risk of a crash. The affected population in the later campaign was certain 2011-2013 Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles with 3.6, 5.7 or 6.4-litre engines that had already been recalled under 14V530 or 15V115.
The class action and what it produced. Velasco, et al. v. Chrysler Group LLC, Central District of California, with a settlement website at TIPMSettlement.com. Chrysler agreed to extend the warranty period for the external fuel pump relays installed under the recalls, and owners of 2011-2013 Grand Cherokee and Durango vehicles were covered by a three-year or 36,000-mile warranty on certain components. Fiat Chrysler did not admit a defect or liability.
The cheap cause that gets skipped — and this is documented in owner complaints. Owners have reported dealers proposing a fuel pump or a full module replacement before performing the applicable recall, on the basis that no diagnostic test could confirm a defective relay. Insist the recall is checked and performed first. A no-start on this vehicle is a VIN question before it is a parts question.
Where this does not apply. Vehicles outside 2011-2013 and outside the campaign scope. And a single solid click with bright dash lights is a starter rather than this — the clicking guide separates the patterns.
At the shop — say this: "Before any diagnosis or parts, please check this VIN against the TIPM fuel pump relay recalls including 14V530 and 15V115 and any later campaign, and tell me in writing what applies and what has been performed."
2 · Front brakes — 20,000 to 70,000 miles
The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that stops under hard pressure — the wear indicator at roughly 3mm. Grinding is low, gritty and felt through the pedal.
What it actually is. Normal consumption on a heavy vehicle. Towing and performance variants shorten it considerably.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A squeal only on the first two damp-morning stops is surface rust — free. Ask for pad thickness in millimetres; above 4mm you are buying time you already have.
Where this does not apply. On plug-in hybrids, regenerative braking does much of the deceleration and pads last considerably longer than a conventional owner would expect. Ask for the measurement rather than accepting a mileage-based recommendation.
Fix it yourself — realistic. Front pads and rotors are a genuine driveway job: $150-$280 in parts, three hours, jack stands rated for the weight. The honest limit: performance variants with larger brake packages use different hardware and higher torque specifications, and on those the margin for error is smaller. Check what your trim actually has before ordering.
At the shop — say this: "What's the actual pad thickness in millimetres front and rear, and are the rotors above minimum spec? If the pads are over 4 millimetres I'd rather wait."

3 · ZF nine-speed transmission behaviour — 30,000 to 100,000 miles
The tell. Shudder, erratic gear changes, hesitation under acceleration. Owners describe the transmission chronically hunting between gears on the highway and lurching when engaging first or second. In some cases, complete failure.
What it actually is. A nine-speed automatic with a complex shift schedule managed largely in software, used across Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Renegade and Compass. Because no safety recall attaches to the behaviour, repairs fall to the owner — which is exactly why the sequence of steps matters.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The current transmission control calibration. On modern automatics, shift-quality complaints are frequently addressed by software before hardware, and it is the cheapest possible starting point. Ask for it explicitly, have it noted on the order, and drive it for a week before agreeing to anything mechanical.
The honest note. Some owners report meaningful improvement from calibration and fluid; others report the character never changes. Be clear with yourself about whether you are buying a repair or trying to buy a different driving feel, because those have different success rates.
Where this does not apply. Vehicles with the eight-speed automatic rather than the nine-speed. Confirm which you have before accepting a diagnosis built on the other one.
At the shop — say this: "Before any hardware, is the transmission control module on the current calibration? Please note that on the order along with the fluid condition, and I'll drive it a week before we go further."
4 · Plug-in hybrid battery fire risk — any mileage, 2022-2026 PHEV
The tell. None reliably, which is why the advisory rather than the symptom is the actionable part. Chrysler is aware of one injury potentially related to the defect.
What it actually is. Affected vehicles may have a battery pack containing cells with separator damage, which may lead to a vehicle fire. The recall covers 320,065 plug-in hybrid vehicles in total — 228,221 Wrangler PHEVs and 91,844 Grand Cherokee PHEVs — and includes vehicles previously recalled and remedied under NHTSA campaign 24V-720.
The advisory, stated exactly. Owners should park outside and away from structures and other vehicles until the vehicle has been remedied. Owners should not charge unrepaired batteries, because the risk of fire is higher in a charged battery than in a depleted one. Dealers update the high voltage battery pack software and replace the pack assembly if necessary, free of charge.
The cheap cause that is free. The VIN lookup, and then following the advisory until the remedy is performed. There is no cheaper or more consequential action available to an affected owner.
Where this does not apply. Non-hybrid Grand Cherokees are outside this campaign entirely.
At the shop — say this: "Please confirm whether this VIN is covered by the plug-in hybrid battery recall, whether the remedy has been performed, and whether the earlier 24V-720 work needs repeating under the newer campaign."
5 · Plug-in hybrid loss of drive power — any mileage, 2022-2026 PHEV
The tell. A sudden loss of drive power. NHTSA's stated consequence is that a loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
What it actually is. A software error within the hybrid control processor on 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid vehicles. The recall was issued on 4 September 2025 and covers more than 91,000 vehicles. Stellantis stated it had not received reports of injuries related to the recall at that time.
What to do when a remedy is not yet available. Stellantis was still developing a fix at announcement and committed to notifying owners once one exists. That makes the practical action different from a normal recall: confirm your VIN is in scope, make sure your contact details with the manufacturer are current so the notification reaches you, and check periodically rather than waiting for a letter that may go to a previous address.
The cheap cause that is free. The VIN lookup at NHTSA and a call to customer service on 800-853-1403, the number given in the campaign.
Where this does not apply. Conventional Grand Cherokees are outside this entirely, as are model years before 2022.
At the shop — say this: "Is this VIN covered by recall 73C for the hybrid control processor, and has a remedy been released yet? If not, please confirm my contact details are current for the notification."
Why does a Jeep Grand Cherokee stall without warning, and is it covered? 6 · Air suspension — 50,000 to 120,000 miles
The tell. One corner sitting low in the morning after the vehicle has been parked overnight. A compressor that runs longer than it used to, or runs when it should be idle. A suspension warning message. In later stages, the vehicle refusing to raise or dropping while driving.
What it actually is. Air springs develop leaks as their rubber ages. A leaking spring makes the compressor work harder to maintain ride height, and an overworked compressor fails — which is the cascade owners describe. The failure order is usually spring first, compressor second, and the second failure is the expensive one.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The leak itself, found early. A single air spring replaced when it starts weeping is a fraction of a spring plus a compressor plus a dryer. Ask for a leak test with soapy solution on the springs and fittings before anyone quotes a compressor.
The alternative worth knowing about. Conversion to conventional coil springs is a legitimate option on a vehicle you intend to keep, and owners who do it generally report the ride is acceptable and the system stops costing money. It is a trade-off — you lose ride-height adjustment — but the standard coil setup on this vehicle does not carry this exposure at all.
Where this does not apply. Coil-sprung vehicles have none of this. If you are shopping and the running cost of the vehicle matters more than the feature set, the coil version removes one of the two largest uncovered bills in this guide.
At the shop — say this: "Can you leak-test the air springs and fittings before quoting a compressor? And if a spring is leaking, I want to know whether the compressor has already been damaged by running against it."
7 · Electrical faults beyond the module — 40,000 to 120,000 miles
The tell. Warning lights that come and go, features that stop working and then work again, a radio or screen that reboots, uplevel systems behaving inconsistently.
What it actually is. A modern Grand Cherokee runs many networked modules, and a fault in one can present as symptoms in several. That is why intermittent electrical complaints on this vehicle are genuinely hard to diagnose and genuinely expensive to guess at.
The cheap cause that gets skipped, and it is free. A weak or failing 12-volt battery. Low voltage produces exactly this pattern — multiple unrelated systems misbehaving intermittently — and it gets diagnosed as a module because the symptoms look sophisticated. Insist on a documented battery load test and a charging system check before any module is quoted. Corroded or loose battery terminals do the same thing.
Where this does not apply. If the pattern is specifically stalling, or a fuel pump that will not prime, on a 2011-2013 vehicle, that is item 1 and it is a recall question rather than a diagnosis question.
At the shop — say this: "Before any module work, can you load-test the battery, check the terminals and verify charging system output, and put those results on the invoice?"
8 · Wheel bearings and suspension — 60,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. A hum from around 40-50 mph rising with road speed and changing when you steer gently — that steering sensitivity names the side.
What it actually is. Rolling elements wear and the assembly develops play. It worsens steadily and can eventually affect wheel-speed sensor readings and trigger stability control warnings.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A worn or cupped tire produces nearly the same drone. Rotate and drive: if the noise moves, it is tires.
The free confirmation. With the vehicle safely supported, spin the wheel by hand listening for a gritty rumble, then rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock feeling for play.
Fix it yourself — the cheap half only. Sway bar end links, the usual cause of a clunk over bumps rather than a hum, are a genuine driveway job: $50-$110 in parts, two bolts per side, an hour. The honest limit: the hub bearing is not, on a vehicle this heavy. The axle nut is torque-critical, the bolts seize on salted vehicles, and a hub fitted to the wrong torque fails early or damages the wheel-speed sensor you just paid for. Keep the links, hand over the hub.
Where this does not apply. If the noise ignores steering input, look at the drivetrain — on this vehicle that includes the transfer case and, on four-wheel-drive versions, the front differential.
At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I steer, so I think a bearing — but can we rotate the tires first, and show me the play by hand before ordering parts?"
Should I buy a used Jeep Grand Cherokee, given the recall history? Recall volume is a misleading proxy for risk, and on this vehicle it misleads in the buyer's favour. A safety recall means the defect is identified, the remedy is defined, the repair is performed free of charge, and completion is recorded against the VIN where anyone can verify it before purchase. The items on this vehicle that carry genuine uncovered financial risk are the ones with no campaign at all: the nine-speed transmission, where owners report hunting, lurching and in some cases complete failure with repairs falling to them, and the air suspension, where a leaking spring can cascade into a failed compressor. So the useful pre-purchase questions are not about the recall list but about the test drive and the specification: how does it shift at light throttle, and does it have air springs or coils. 9 · Air conditioning — 80,000 to 140,000 miles
The tell. Air that starts cold and fades warm, or never gets cold. On vehicles with rear climate control, rear vents failing while front vents work is a distinct and useful clue.
What it actually is. Refrigerant is not consumed, so a system that is low is a system that leaks. Multi-zone systems have longer lines and more joints than a single-zone setup, which means more places to leak.
The cheap causes. A failed relay gives no cold air with a healthy system. A blend door actuator produces a similar complaint from inside the dash. Rear-only failure often points at rear lines or the rear expansion valve rather than the compressor.
Where this does not apply. On plug-in hybrids the compressor may be electrically driven, which changes both the failure modes and the diagnostic path entirely.
At the shop — say this: "Was a leak test performed, and where exactly is it leaking? Front and rear both, or rear only? And can you check the relay before condemning the compressor?"
10 · Catalytic converter — 120,000 miles and up
The tell. A steady check-engine light with P0420, or P0430 for the second bank, often with no drivability symptom. Frequently the first sign is failing an emissions inspection.
What it actually is. The computer compares the oxygen sensors before and after the converter; when their readings converge, the code sets. That does not say the converter is broken.
The cheap causes, all three. A lazy downstream sensor ($180-$350 installed). A small exhaust leak upstream. An unresolved misfire poisoning the substrate.
The one demand that changes the conversation: Mode 6. Mode $06 reports the catalyst monitor's actual test result as a number against threshold. Ask for those values in writing, and on a V6 or V8 ask for both banks separately — that single request prevents a doubled quote. Our guide to expensive codes covers the pattern in full.
Where this does not apply. If a misfire code is present alongside P0420, resolve the misfire first — replacing a converter while the thing that poisoned it is still running is money spent twice.
At the shop — say this: "Before we replace anything I want the Mode 6 catalyst values for each bank separately against threshold, the downstream sensors actually tested rather than assumed, and any misfire resolved first."
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up. Note which lines are red: the two largest are the two items in this guide with no campaign attached. Everything else expensive has a free remedy behind a VIN lookup.
Your number, by which Grand Cherokee you drive
Two rows there invert the guide. A coil-sprung vehicle deletes one of the two uncovered big-ticket items outright, which on this model is worth more than any trim feature. And a plug-in hybrid owner has a very different list from a conventional one: two open safety campaigns to resolve, but far less brake wear and a different air-conditioning path.
Should you buy a used Grand Cherokee? Which years, and how to check in five minutes
Most people searching for Grand Cherokee problems are deciding whether to buy one, and here the recall list is the wrong thing to be frightened of.
Why the campaigns are the reassuring part. Every recall item in this guide has a defined defect, a free remedy and a completion record attached to the VIN. You can verify all of it before handing over money. That is a better position than a vehicle whose problems are undocumented.
What actually carries uncovered risk. Two things: the nine-speed transmission, where owners report hunting, lurching and in some cases outright failure with no campaign to fall back on, and the air suspension, with its cascade pattern. Those are the items to assess on a test drive and in the specification sheet.
The five-minute pre-purchase procedure:
- Run the VIN and note every campaign, open and completed. Ask specifically about the TIPM recalls on 2011-2013 vehicles and the two PHEV campaigns on 2022-2026 hybrids.
- Drive it at light throttle between 30 and 50 mph for at least ten minutes. A short loop will not expose gear hunting; a real drive will.
- Check whether it has air springs or coils. This single specification changes the ownership cost more than trim level does.
- Look at it after it has sat overnight if air-suspended, before the compressor has had a chance to level it.
- Ask whether any electrical faults have been diagnosed, and for the invoices.
- On a PHEV, ask whether the battery recall remedy has been performed and whether the vehicle has been charged since.
The short version: a coil-sprung Grand Cherokee with campaigns completed and a transmission that behaves on a proper test drive is a normal used SUV with heavy-vehicle running costs. The two things that will cost you money unexpectedly are the two with no campaign behind them.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 — the VIN question, dated today. "What campaigns show open on this VIN right now?" Today matters; this vehicle drew new campaigns in 2024 and 2025.
Checkpoint 2 — the column question. "Is this a campaign item or not?" On this vehicle that single distinction sorts the free from the expensive.
Checkpoint 3 — the diagnostic fee. "What's the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer, usually credited.
Checkpoint 4 — the battery question. "Was the battery load-tested before any module diagnosis?" Low voltage produces sophisticated-looking symptoms across unrelated systems.
Checkpoint 5 — the software question. "Is the transmission control module on the current calibration?" Before any hardware on a nine-speed.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Grand Cherokee owners the most
Trap 1: the fuel pump quoted before the recall. The situation: a 2012 Grand Cherokee that cranks but will not start, intermittently. What the shop says: "Could be the fuel pump, could be the TIPM. We'd need the vehicle for a few days." What is really happening: the applicable recall addresses exactly this failure, and owners have reported dealers proposing parts before performing it, on the basis that no test can confirm a defective relay. Price versus bill: $0 under the campaign against a four-figure module or an $800 pump. Your protective question: "Please perform the applicable recall first, and tell me in writing what it covers."
Trap 2: the transmission hardware quoted before the software. The situation: a nine-speed hunting between gears at highway speed. What the shop says: "That's the nine-speed. They're known for it. Valve body or worse." What is really happening: the diagnosis may be right, but shift-quality complaints on modern automatics are frequently addressed by calibration, and there is no campaign here to absorb a wrong guess. Price versus bill: $0-$250 for software against $3,500 or more. Your protective question: "Is the transmission control module on the current calibration, and can I drive it a week after that before we discuss hardware?"
Trap 3: the compressor bought while the spring still leaks. The situation: an air-suspended vehicle sitting low in the morning, compressor running constantly. What the shop says: "Compressor's failed. That's the fix." What is really happening: the compressor may well be finished — because it has been running against a leaking spring. Replacing it without fixing the leak means it fails again. Price versus bill: the same repair, twice. Your protective question: "Was a leak test done on the springs and fittings, and are we replacing the cause or the casualty?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.
Scenario 1 — the parts quote that skipped the campaign. A 2012 Grand Cherokee with an intermittent no-start, offered a fuel pump or a module replacement. The recall covering the fuel pump relay addresses that exact failure at no charge, and owner complaints in the public record describe precisely this sequence of being quoted before the recall was applied. Scenario 2 — the transmission that was a calibration. A nine-speed hunting at highway speed, quoted as hardware. Software first costs a fraction and sometimes resolves it; hardware after software is a decision made with information. Lesson: where there is no campaign to absorb a wrong guess, sequence matters more, not less.
Scenario 3 — the compressor that failed twice. An air spring weeping quietly for months, a compressor working overtime to compensate, and eventually a compressor failure. Replaced alone, it goes back to working against the same leak. Lesson: on a cascade system, ask which component is the cause and which is the casualty before authorising either.
How can you tell a real Grand Cherokee failure from an unnecessary repair quote? Sort every symptom into one of two columns before you discuss price. Column one is campaign items: the fuel pump relay stall on 2011-2013 vehicles, the plug-in hybrid battery recall with its park-outside advisory, and recall 73C for loss of drive power. Those have free remedies and completion records attached to your VIN, so a paid diagnosis should never start before the lookup. Column two is everything with no campaign, and on this vehicle that is where the real money sits: the nine-speed transmission and the air suspension. Your situation right now: four playbooks
"It stalls or won't start on a 2011-2013 vehicle." Do not authorise parts. Get the VIN checked against the TIPM recalls and insist the applicable campaign is performed first, in writing.
"I have a plug-in hybrid." Check both campaigns today. If the battery recall applies and has not been remedied, park outside away from structures and do not charge it. That advisory is the manufacturer's, and it is not optional guidance.
"The transmission hunts and lurches." Software before hardware, then a week of driving. And be honest with yourself about whether you are buying a repair or a different character.
"Nothing's wrong, I just bought it." Run the VIN. Note whether you have air or coil springs. Set a yearly reminder to re-run the recall lookup — on this vehicle that habit has a documented payoff, because campaigns arrived in both 2024 and 2025.
After the repair: verify, then prevent
Verify within a week. Recall work: completion documented against the VIN in writing. Transmission: same road, same light-throttle speeds, and note whether the behaviour actually changed. Air suspension: level after three consecutive nights parked. Bearing: hum gone at the speed where it lived.
Re-run the recall lookup annually. This is the Grand Cherokee-specific habit, and the 2024 and 2025 campaigns are the evidence for it.
Record the before and after. Thirty seconds from the same position is the cheapest proof of repair that exists. The recording guide has the protocol.
Prevent the next one. Transmission fluid on a real interval, halved if you tow. An air spring leak addressed as soon as the vehicle starts sitting low. A battery replaced before it gets weak enough to confuse the electrical system. Those three lines address the two uncovered big-ticket items and most of the intermittent electrical complaints.

- NHTSA recalls 14V530 and 15V115, and a subsequent campaign — Chrysler (FCA US LLC) recalling certain 2011-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with a 3.6, 5.7 or 6.4-litre engine and previously recalled under 14V530 or 15V115. "The fuel pump relay inside the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM-7) may fail, causing the vehicle to stall without warning." Consequence: "A vehicle stall increases the risk of a crash." Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed beginning 3 January 2020, with vehicles experiencing a fuel pump failure receiving an interim repair and a second notice when the final remedy became available. Chrysler customer service: 1-800-853-1403.
- Velasco, et al. v. Chrysler Group LLC — class action filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California concerning the Totally Integrated Power Module. Settlement website: TIPMSettlement.com. Chrysler agreed to extend the warranty period for the external fuel pump relays installed in accordance with the recalls; owners of 2011-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles were covered by a three-year or 36,000-mile warranty on certain vehicle components. Fiat Chrysler did not admit a defect or liability and stated it settled to avoid costly long-term litigation.
- Plug-in hybrid high voltage battery fire recall — Chrysler recalling 320,065 model year 2020-2025 Jeep Wrangler PHEV and model year 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEV vehicles due to risk of fire while parked or driven; 228,221 Wrangler and 91,844 Grand Cherokee vehicles. Affected vehicles may have a battery pack with cells that have separator damage, which may lead to a vehicle fire. Owners should park outside and away from structures and other vehicles until remedied, and should not charge unrepaired batteries because the risk of fire is higher in a charged battery than in a depleted one. Includes vehicles previously recalled and remedied under NHTSA recall 24V-720. Chrysler is aware of one injury potentially related to the defect.
- Chrysler recall 73C — issued 4 September 2025, covering more than 91,000 model year 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid vehicles. "A software error within the hybrid control processor may result in a loss of drive power," and "a loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash." The remedy was under development at announcement; owner notification letters expected 23 October 2025; VINs searchable on NHTSA.gov from 11 September 2025.
- ZF nine-speed transmission complaints — the nine-speed automatic used in Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Renegade and Compass is reported as prone to shudder, erratic gear changes, acceleration hesitation and complete failure, with owners describing chronic hunting between gears on highways and lurching when engaging first or second gear. No safety recall attaches to this behaviour.
- Owner complaint records — public complaint text describes dealers proposing a fuel pump or module replacement before performing the applicable recall, on the stated basis that no diagnostic test could determine whether the fuel relay was defective.
Recall eligibility and completion status depend on your VIN and build date, and this model has drawn new campaigns as recently as 2025. Re-check NHTSA's recall lookup annually rather than relying on a previous result.
