Subaru is the only manufacturer in this series that published a number for when oil consumption stops being normal.
Under the settlement notice in Yaegar v. Subaru of America, if a dealer-performed oil consumption test shows a vehicle consuming more than one-third of a quart in 1,200 miles, the applicable service bulletin repair is performed at no charge. That single figure is more useful than any amount of forum argument about what counts as excessive, and it remains the reference point even though the warranty window itself has closed for most affected vehicles. Subaru has since added a second one for windshields, and the ten extensions owners miss lists both with their exact terms.
The second thing worth knowing is that a different Subaru settlement is still live. A separate action extended powertrain coverage for failures involving a faulty MPT clutch — including the transmission shaft — for eight years or 100,000 miles from the in-service date, transferable within that period, with a CVT replacement provided where an initial repair does not resolve the problem. On 2019 and 2020 vehicles that window runs into 2027 and 2028.
Two settlements, two different clocks, and most owners know about neither.

One rule overrides everything: on a Subaru, measure before you argue. Oil consumption on this brand generates more unproductive conversation than any other topic in this series, and the settlement gave everyone a way out of it — a defined test, performed by a dealer, with a defined threshold. Bring the number, not the impression. GM owners had the same argument over the 2.4 Ecotec, and the Equinox guide quotes GM's own definition of excessive consumption.
First: which Outback do you actually have?
Older EJ-series engines. The head gasket generation. This is the reputation that followed Subaru for years, and the repair is expensive less because of parts than because the boxer layout makes access laborious.
FB-series engines, roughly 2011-2015. The oil consumption generation, and the vehicles covered by the Yaegar settlement — Forester, Outback, Legacy, Impreza and Crosstrek, roughly 665,000 vehicles. Torque News reporting identified the most affected as 2011-2014 Forester 2.5, 2013 Legacy 2.5, 2013 Outback 2.5, 2012-2013 Impreza 2.0 and 2013 Crosstrek 2.0.
2019-2020 vehicles with the CVT settlement. A separate action with a live eight-year, 100,000-mile window from the in-service date, transferable.
Newer vehicles. Outside both settlements, with less settled complaint histories. Treat published failure mileages for these with caution, including ours.
Turbocharged variants. Add turbo plumbing and heat-related items to any of the above, and shorten oil intervals accordingly.
The 5-minute check that dates your Outback better than the odometer
- Find your in-service date. Door jamb sticker, owner portal, or the selling dealer. On a 2019-2020 car this decides whether item 4 is free.
- Pull the dipstick and note the level against the marks. Below the marks with under 1,200 miles since the last top-up → item 3, and start a written log today.
- Start it cold and watch the exhaust for the first minute. White vapour that persists beyond warm-up, especially with a sweet smell → item 2, head gasket.
- Check the coolant reservoir for any oily film or discolouration. Either points at item 2.
- From a complete stop, accelerate gently to 25 mph, twice. A shudder that comes and goes with throttle → item 4.
- Accelerate to 45 mph and listen with the radio off. A whine rising with road speed rather than engine revs → a later CVT stage, and not a wait-and-see.

What actually determines your number
Your engine generation. EJ means head gaskets are the reserve item. FB means oil consumption is. They are different budgets and different failure timelines.
Your in-service date. On 2019-2020 vehicles this decides whether the CVT settlement still applies. It runs eight years from that date, not from your purchase.
Whether consumption was ever documented. An undocumented top-up habit is invisible to any warranty, settlement or resale conversation. A dated log with dealer test results is an asset.
Boxer layout labour. Horizontally opposed engines put the heads where access is awkward. That is why head gasket work on this brand costs more than the same job on an inline engine, and it is a structural fact rather than a dealer markup.
Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on routine labour — but settlement and warranty work must be performed by an authorised Subaru retailer, and the oil consumption test itself is defined as a dealer procedure. The full comparison maps which jobs go where.
All-wheel drive everywhere. Every Outback is AWD, which means tire matching matters more than on most vehicles: mismatched tire circumference stresses the drivetrain continuously, and it is a genuine cause of driveline complaints.
The ten problems, in the order they arrive
1 · Front brakes — 30,000 to 70,000 miles
The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that stops under hard pressure — the wear indicator at roughly 3mm. Grinding is low, gritty and felt through the pedal.
What it actually is. Normal consumption on a wagon that is heavier than a sedan and frequently used in weather that shortens pad life.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A squeal only on the first two damp-morning stops is surface rust — free. Ask for pad thickness in millimetres; above 4mm you are buying time you already have.
Where this does not apply. Vehicles driven mostly on highways at steady speed will run far past the top of this window, and a shop quoting brakes on mileage alone rather than on measurement should be asked for the number.
Fix it yourself — realistic. Front pads and rotors are a genuine driveway job: $120-$220 in parts, two to three hours, jack stands mandatory. The honest limit: uneven wear side to side or a seized slide pin means a caliper — stop, because a dragging caliper destroys new parts within weeks.
At the shop — say this: "What's the actual pad thickness in millimetres front and rear, and are the rotors above minimum spec? If the pads are over 4 millimetres I'd rather wait."
2 · Head gaskets on EJ-series engines — 90,000 to 150,000 miles
The tell. A sweet smell after driving. Coolant disappearing with no puddle. White vapour from the exhaust that persists after warm-up. An oily film or discolouration in the coolant reservoir. A temperature gauge that climbs under load and settles when you ease off.
What it actually is. The gasket between cylinder head and block loses its seal, letting combustion gases into the coolant or coolant into the cylinder. On a horizontally opposed boxer engine the heads sit either side of the block in a tight bay, which is why this job is labour-heavy rather than parts-heavy.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A cooling system pressure test, before anything. A failing radiator cap, a weeping hose or a water pump can produce coolant loss that looks like the start of a gasket story and costs a fraction of it. Fifteen minutes, and it either rules the cheap answer in or out.
Where this does not apply. FB-series engines are not the head gasket generation; their story is item 3. If you have an FB engine and somebody quotes head gaskets for oil consumption, ask which failure they are actually describing.
At the shop — say this: "Can you pressure-test the cooling system and run a combustion gas test on the coolant before quoting head gaskets? I want the cheap causes ruled out and the test result shown to me."

3 · Oil consumption on FB-series engines — 50,000 to 110,000 miles
The tell. The dipstick drops between changes with no visible leak. Owners commonly describe topping up between services and assuming it is normal — which is precisely the habit the settlement threshold was written to settle.
What it actually is. The lawsuit alleged defective piston rings causing the engines to burn a substantial portion of their oil, damaging engine parts and creating a risk of stalling. It concerned Subaru FB engines across Forester, Outback, Legacy, Impreza and Crosstrek, roughly 2011 to 2015, and roughly 665,000 vehicles.
The number that ends the argument. Under the settlement notice, an oil consumption test performed by an authorised Subaru retailer showing consumption of more than one-third of a quart in 1,200 miles triggered the applicable service bulletin repair at no charge. Even now that the window has closed, that figure is the clearest available definition of excessive on this brand, and a documented test result is worth having in any conversation about a repair or a resale.
The honest note about timing. The extension moved the powertrain warranty from five years or 60,000 miles to eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever came first, running from the original in-service date. Vehicles already past those limits at the notice date received one further year. Both windows have now closed for the affected model years, so a consumption repair in 2026 is an owner expense.
The cheap cause that is free, and still worth doing. The documented test and a dated log. Consumption that is measured is a maintenance decision; consumption that is merely noticed is an argument. And a car with documented consumption history is a materially easier car to sell honestly.
Fix it yourself — the free half. Check the level every second fuel fill, keep a quart in the boot, and write down the date and mileage each time you add oil. The honest limit: consumption plus blue smoke at start-up, or plus any knocking, stops being a monitoring exercise and needs a compression and leak-down test before money is spent.
At the shop — say this: "I'd like a documented oil consumption test against the one-third of a quart in 1,200 miles standard, with the result written on the invoice, before we discuss any repair."
4 · CVT shudder, hesitation and the live settlement — 30,000 to 100,000 miles
The tell, in order. A shudder or judder during light acceleration from a stop. Then hesitation before the vehicle responds to the accelerator. Then a whine or drone that rises with road speed rather than engine revs. Owners have also reported chain slip symptoms and repeated repair attempts before a replacement was performed.
What it actually is. The settlement concerns qualifying failures or components damaged by a faulty MPT clutch, such as the transmission shaft. The extended warranty covers repair work performed by an authorised Subaru dealer, and where an initial repair does not rectify the problem it provides for a CVT replacement.
The coverage, stated precisely — and this one has not expired. Eight years or 100,000 miles from the in-service date, whichever comes first, transferable within the coverage period, with all costs of qualifying repairs at an authorised dealer covered. For a vehicle placed in service in 2019 or 2020, that window runs into 2027 or 2028.
The cheap cause that is free. The VIN call, before any paid diagnosis. On this item specifically, an owner who takes a shudder to an independent shop and pays for a fluid service may be spending money on a repair somebody else would have performed at no charge — and the same money will still be needed later.
Where this does not apply. Older vehicles outside the settlement scope have no such coverage, and there the ordinary sequence applies: fluid condition and cooling first, then a diagnosis establishing which stage you are at. On any Subaru, note that mismatched tire circumference stresses the AWD drivetrain continuously and is a genuine contributor to driveline complaints — check that all four tires match before blaming the transmission.
At the shop — say this: "What is my in-service date, and does my VIN fall inside the CVT settlement extended warranty for MPT clutch failures? I'd like that answered before any paid diagnosis or fluid service."
5 · Cold-start rattle and timing chain — 60,000 to 120,000 miles
The tell. A rattle for one to three seconds at cold start that fades as oil pressure builds. The diagnostic detail is the trend: a noise that has grown from one second to three over months points at chain and guide wear, while a consistent short rattle points at the tensioner not holding pressure.
What it actually is. The chain tensioner is hydraulic and runs on engine oil pressure. Low or degraded oil means it cannot take up slack at start-up, and the chain slaps its guides.
The cheap cause that gets skipped, and it is nearly free. Fresh oil of the correct viscosity, then a week of driving to see whether the rattle shortens. On this vehicle there is a specific compounding link worth naming: an engine that is consuming oil is an engine running lower on oil pressure, so item 3 and item 5 are the same story at two removes.
Where this does not apply. A rattle that changes with road surface rather than engine speed is not this — that is heat shields or exhaust hangers, and it is far cheaper. The ticking-noise guide separates the sounds.
At the shop — say this: "Fresh oil at the correct spec first, then let's re-check whether the rattle is shorter after a week. And please record the oil level, because if this engine is consuming oil that's part of the same problem."
What actually counts as excessive oil consumption on a Subaru, in numbers? The class-action settlement gave the clearest answer available on any brand in this series: if an oil consumption test performed by an authorised Subaru retailer shows the vehicle consuming more than one-third of a quart of engine oil in 1,200 miles, the applicable technical service bulletin repair was performed at no charge under the extended warranty. That is a measurable, checkable standard rather than a judgement call, and it survives the expiry of the warranty itself because it remains the reference point at a service counter. The test procedure matters as much as the number: a measured fill, a sealed dipstick, a defined distance driven, and a re-measurement, all performed by the dealer rather than estimated at home. 6 · Wheel bearings — 70,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. A hum from around 40-50 mph rising with road speed and changing when you steer gently — that steering sensitivity names the side.
What it actually is. Rolling elements wear and the assembly develops play. It worsens steadily and can eventually affect wheel-speed sensor readings.
The cheap cause that gets skipped — and the Subaru-specific one. A cupped tire produces nearly the same drone, so rotate and drive. But on a permanently all-wheel-drive vehicle there is a second check that generic advice omits: all four tires should match in make, model and remaining tread depth. Mismatched circumference makes the drivetrain work continuously against itself, which produces noise, heat and genuine wear. Measure the tread on all four before buying any driveline part.
The free confirmation. With the vehicle safely supported, spin the wheel by hand listening for a gritty rumble, then rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock feeling for play.
Where this does not apply. If the hum does not change with steering input, look at the drivetrain instead — including item 4.
At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I steer, so I think a bearing — but can we rotate the tires, measure tread depth on all four, and show me the play by hand before ordering parts?"
7 · Suspension: struts and the clunk that isn't them — 80,000 to 140,000 miles
The tell. A clunk or knock over speed bumps and expansion joints, felt more than heard, from one corner. Later: floatiness over crests and uneven patchy tire wear.
What it actually is. Struts fade rather than fail, which is why most owners never notice until a newer vehicle feels startlingly composed.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The clunk over bumps is more often a sway bar end link than a strut — $40-$90 in parts, $150-$250 installed, against $700-$1,200 for a strut pair, and confirmed by hand in ninety seconds on a lift.
Fix it yourself — the honest split. End links are a genuine driveway job: two bolts per side, an hour, ordinary tools. The honest limit: never disassemble a strut to reuse the spring without a proper spring compressor and real experience — a compressed coil spring stores enough energy to kill. Buy the complete assembly or pay a shop.
Where this does not apply. On vehicles with adaptive or self-levelling suspension, aftermarket assemblies may not behave correctly; check what your trim actually has before ordering parts.
At the shop — say this: "Before we discuss struts, can you check the sway bar end links and strut mounts on the lift and show me the play? And if we do struts, are you quoting complete assemblies?"
8 · Air conditioning — 80,000 to 140,000 miles
The tell. Air that starts cold and fades warm after ten minutes, or never gets cold. Sometimes a clutch cycling rapidly, or no engagement click.
What it actually is. Refrigerant is not consumed, so a system that is low is a system that leaks. The condenser sits at the front and takes road debris — and on a vehicle frequently driven on gravel, stone damage is a genuinely likely explanation worth checking first.
The cheap causes. A failed relay gives no cold air with a healthy system. A blend door actuator produces a similar complaint from inside the dash.
Where this does not apply. On hybrid variants the compressor may be electrically driven, changing both the failure modes and the diagnostic path.
At the shop — say this: "Was a leak test performed, and where exactly is it leaking? Is there stone damage on the condenser, and can you check the relay before condemning the compressor?"
Do all Subarus really blow head gaskets? Not any more, and the distinction that matters is which engine family you are looking at rather than which badge is on the car. The head gasket reputation belongs to the older EJ-series boxer engines, where the failure was common enough to define the brand for a generation of owners. The FB-series engines that replaced them have a different characteristic problem entirely: oil consumption, which produced its own class action and a settlement defining excessive as more than one-third of a quart in 1,200 miles. So the honest answer is that Subaru swapped one well-known engine issue for another rather than eliminating them. What that means practically is that a buyer should ask which engine a specific vehicle has and budget for that family's item — head gaskets at $1,500 to $2,500 on an EJ, consumption monitoring and possible repair on an FB. 9 · Engine mounts — 90,000 to 150,000 miles
The tell. Vibration through the seat and wheel at idle, clearly worse in Drive than in Park. A thunk shifting between Drive and Reverse.
What it actually is. Rubber and liquid-filled isolators perish with age and heat. A boxer engine's inherent balance means owners often notice mount wear later than they would on an inline four, because the baseline vibration was lower to begin with.
The test that costs nothing. Foot firmly on the brake, shift to Drive, hold ten seconds, feel. Then Reverse. Then Park. Present in gear and absent in Park is a mount.
Where this does not apply. If a shudder appears as you pull away rather than while stationary in gear, that is item 4, not this — same sensation, very different bill.
At the shop — say this: "It's worse in Drive than Park with the brake held, and it doesn't shudder as I pull away. Can you check the mounts on a lift with a pry bar and tell me which are actually failed?"
10 · Catalytic converter — 120,000 miles and up
The tell. A steady check-engine light with P0420, often with no drivability symptom. Sometimes a faint sulphur smell. Frequently the first sign is failing an emissions inspection.
What it actually is. The computer compares the oxygen sensors before and after the converter; when their readings converge, the code sets. That does not say the converter is broken.
The cheap causes, all three. A lazy downstream sensor ($180-$350 installed). A small exhaust leak upstream. Sustained oil consumption poisoning the substrate — which on an FB engine with item 3 running is a realistic chain, and one worth naming before buying the expensive part.
The one demand that changes the conversation: Mode 6. Mode $06 reports the catalyst monitor's actual test result as a number against threshold. Ask for those values in writing before authorising anything. Our guide to expensive codes covers the pattern in full.
Where this does not apply. If oil consumption is ongoing and undocumented, a new converter is money spent into the same chain. Resolve or at least document item 3 first.
At the shop — say this: "Before we replace the converter I want the Mode 6 catalyst values against threshold, the downstream sensor actually tested rather than assumed, and the oil consumption question addressed first."
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up. Two of the bottom four lines are repairs that somebody else pays for if the VIN and the date line up — and the check that establishes that costs nothing.
Your number, by which Outback you drive
Two rows there invert the guide. An owner with mismatched tires may be chasing a drivetrain complaint that is not a fault at all, and the fix is tires rather than parts. And a 2019-2020 owner is in the strongest position on this list, because the one genuinely expensive drivetrain item still has live, transferable coverage attached.
Should you buy a used Outback, and which years?
Most people searching for Outback problems are deciding whether to buy one, so here it is directly.
What the reputation gets right. Two real, documented, expensive patterns exist: head gaskets on older EJ engines and oil consumption on FB engines from roughly 2011 to 2015. Neither is folklore; both produced litigation, and the second produced a settlement covering around 665,000 vehicles.
What the reputation gets wrong. Both problems are now well past their peak, both are checkable before purchase, and one of them left behind a precise definition of what counts as excessive — which is more than most brands offer. A vehicle with a documented consumption repair is in a better position than an identical vehicle with a quiet top-up habit, and only the paperwork tells them apart.
Where the live money is. 2019-2020 vehicles carry a CVT settlement that has not expired, runs eight years from the in-service date, and transfers to you as a subsequent owner within the coverage period. That is a genuine asset attached to a specific set of used cars, and almost nobody prices it in.
The five-minute pre-purchase procedure:
- Get the in-service date, not just the model year. It sets every warranty clock.
- Ask for oil consumption history, and specifically whether a dealer test was ever performed.
- Pull the dipstick yourself and ask how often oil is added between services.
- Check the coolant reservoir for oily film on any EJ-engine vehicle.
- Accelerate gently from a full stop three times and feel for shudder.
- Measure tread depth on all four tires. Mismatched tires on an AWD vehicle are both a cost and a warning about how the car was treated.
The short version: an Outback with a documented repair history and four matching tires is a straightforward used buy. A 2019-2020 example is the one to look at hardest, because the coverage that matters most is still running.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 — the date question. "What is my in-service date?" On a 2019-2020 vehicle it decides whether item 4 costs anything.
Checkpoint 2 — the measurement question. "Can we do a documented oil consumption test against the one-third quart per 1,200 miles standard?" Bring the number rather than the impression.
Checkpoint 3 — the diagnostic fee. "What's the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer, usually credited.
Checkpoint 4 — the cheap cause. "Was it ruled out, and how?" Pressure test before head gaskets. End links before struts. Tread matching before driveline parts. Fresh oil before timing components.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Outback owners the most
Trap 1: the covered transmission paid for privately. The situation: shudder from a stop on a 2019 Outback at 68,000 miles. What the shop says: "CVT fluid service, $350, and we'll see how it goes." What is really happening: if the in-service date puts the vehicle inside the eight-year, 100,000-mile settlement window, qualifying repairs at an authorised dealer are covered, and a replacement is provided where an initial repair does not resolve it. Price versus bill: potentially $0 against $350 now and thousands later. Your protective question: "What is my in-service date, and does this VIN fall inside the CVT settlement extended warranty?"
Trap 2: the top-up habit that was never measured. The situation: an owner adding a quart every couple of months for two years, assuming it is normal for the brand. What the shop says: nothing, because it never comes up as a complaint. What is really happening: the settlement defined excessive as more than one-third of a quart in 1,200 miles, measured by a dealer. Without a test, there is no evidence — for a warranty claim while the window ran, or for an honest resale afterwards. Price versus bill: a free or cheap documented test, against an undocumented problem that follows the car. Your protective question: "Can we perform a documented oil consumption test and put the result on the invoice?"
Trap 3: the head gasket quoted before the pressure test. The situation: coolant disappearing on an older EJ-engine Outback. What the shop says: "These are known for head gaskets. Fifteen hundred to twenty-five hundred." What is really happening: they may well be right — but a radiator cap, a hose or a water pump can produce the same coolant loss, and a pressure test plus a combustion gas test takes fifteen minutes and either confirms or eliminates the expensive answer. Price versus bill: $60-$140 of testing, against $1,500-$2,500 authorised on reputation. Your protective question: "Can you pressure-test the system and run a combustion gas test on the coolant, and show me the result, before we commit to gaskets?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.
Scenario 1 — the live coverage nobody mentioned. A 2019 Outback shuddering from a stop at 68,000 miles, quoted for a fluid service at an independent shop. The settlement extending powertrain coverage for MPT clutch failures runs eight years from the in-service date and is transferable, which on that vehicle is still open — and only a dealer can perform the covered work. Lesson: on a Subaru of this age the first question is a date, not a diagnosis.
Scenario 2 — the consumption that was never a number. An FB-engine Outback topped up quietly for two years. Under the settlement, a dealer test showing more than one-third of a quart in 1,200 miles triggered a free repair. Without a test there was never a claim, and after the window closed there was never going to be one. Lesson: on this brand, measurement is the whole difference between a warranty conversation and a maintenance habit.
Scenario 3 — the gasket that was a radiator cap. An older EJ Outback losing coolant, quoted at $1,800 for head gaskets on the strength of the model's reputation. A pressure test and a combustion gas test cost a fraction of that and answer the question definitively in either direction. Lesson: a well-known failure mode is a reason to test for it, not a reason to skip the test.
How can you tell a real Outback failure from an unnecessary repair quote? Two checks do most of the work. First the date check: this vehicle has two settlement clocks, one for oil consumption that has expired and one for CVT and MPT clutch failures running eight years from the in-service date, still live on 2019 and 2020 vehicles. Establishing that date before any paid diagnosis can decide the entire bill. Second the measurement check, unusually well defined on this brand: excessive oil consumption means more than one-third of a quart in 1,200 miles on a dealer test, and bringing that standard to a counter replaces an argument with a number. Beyond those, ordinary discipline applies — a pressure test before head gaskets, sway bar links before struts, matching tread depth on all four tires before any driveline part, Mode 6 values before a converter. Your situation right now: four playbooks
"It shudders from a stop and it's a 2019 or 2020." Find the in-service date before you authorise anything, including a fluid service. If you are inside the window, the covered work must be performed by an authorised Subaru dealer.
"I keep topping up the oil." Stop doing it silently. Ask for a documented consumption test measured against one-third of a quart in 1,200 miles, and keep the result. Even outside the warranty window, that paperwork changes how honestly you can sell the car and how seriously a shop takes you.
"Coolant is disappearing on an older engine." Cooling system pressure test and combustion gas test before anything else is quoted. If it is gaskets, it is gaskets — but find out for $100 rather than assuming for $1,800.
"Nothing's wrong, I just bought it." Write your in-service date somewhere you will find it. Measure tread depth on all four tires and keep them matched. Start a dated oil log. Those three habits address the three most expensive items in this guide.
After the repair: verify, then prevent
Verify within a week. Shudder: same gentle pull-away, same road, mileage noted. Head gasket work: coolant level stable over three weeks, no vapour after warm-up, no oily film in the reservoir. Bearing: hum gone at the speed where it lived. Converter: light stays off through two full drive cycles.
On any covered repair, get the coverage documented against the VIN. Settlement work should be recorded, and that record is what makes the car easier to sell later.
Keep the oil log going even after a repair. Consumption that returns is far easier to argue about with two years of dated entries than with a memory.
Prevent the next one. Correct viscosity oil at honest intervals — it protects the timing chain as well as the engine. Four matching tires, always. A cooling system inspection at 100,000 miles on any EJ engine. Those three lines address items 2, 5 and 6.

- Yaegar v. Subaru of America, Inc. et al., No. 1:14-cv-04490 (D.N.J.) — heard before Chief Judge Jerome B. Simandle. Oil consumption class action concerning Subaru FB engines, alleging defective piston rings causing engines to burn a substantial portion of their oil, damaging engine parts and creating a risk of stalling.
- Settlement warranty extension terms — powertrain warranty extended from five years or 60,000 miles to eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, for repairs by an authorised Subaru retailer needed to correct excessive oil consumption. Vehicles already exceeding those limits at the notice date received a one-year extension from the notice date.
- Settlement class notice — consumption threshold — "If the oil consumption test shows that your vehicle consumes more than one-third (1/3) of a quart of engine oil in 1,200 miles, the dealer will perform the applicable TSB Repair at no charge." - Settlement reimbursement provisions — payments for oil consumption test costs, service-bulletin repairs, engine oil up to six quarts per vehicle, and in certain circumstances rental and towing costs.
- Affected vehicle scope — approximately 665,000 vehicles across Forester, Outback, Legacy, Impreza and Crosstrek, roughly 2011 to 2015 model years. Reporting identified the most affected as 2011-2014 Forester 2.5, 2013 Legacy 2.5, 2013 Outback 2.5, 2012-2013 Impreza 2.0 and 2013 Crosstrek 2.0.
- CVT settlement extended warranty — Subaru extended its Powertrain Limited Warranty to include qualifying failures or components damaged by a faulty MPT clutch, such as the transmission shaft, for eight years or 100,000 miles from the in-service date, whichever comes first. Where an initial repair does not rectify the problem, the warranty provides for CVT replacement if necessary; all costs of qualifying repairs by an authorised Subaru dealer are covered; the extended warranty is transferable within its coverage period.
Coverage and eligibility depend on your VIN, model year and original in-service date. The oil consumption extension has expired for the affected model years; the CVT extension remains open on vehicles placed in service within the last eight years. Verify with an authorised Subaru retailer before authorising paid work.
