First: which Silverado do you actually have?
The engine split, which matters more than the year.
- 4.3-litre V6 — no AFM lifter failure mode. The quiet winner of this list for anyone not towing heavy.
- 5.3-litre V8 (AFM, later DFM) — the volume engine and the one this guide is largely about. Lifter failure is the defining risk, along with oil consumption on some years.
- 6.2-litre V8 — same lifter exposure, plus additional attention in recent years over a bearing-related issue affecting 2019-2024 trucks that drew a large recall.
- 2.7-litre turbo four — a different list again, and too new for settled patterns, though lifter complaints exist even here.
- Diesel — outside the scope of this guide; the expensive items are emissions hardware rather than valvetrain.
The transmission split. 2015 and newer trucks largely use the eight-speed 8L90 or 8L45, which is where the converter clutch shudder lives — the most-reported complaint on this truck. Earlier trucks use the 6L80, which has its own control-module story. Ten-speed trucks are newer and calmer.
The AFM question, which is really a strategy question. If your V8 has Active Fuel Management or Dynamic Fuel Management, you have three postures available: do nothing and change oil religiously, fit a disabler, or delete the system if the engine ever comes apart. The 6-minute check that dates your truck better than the odometer
Do this cold, before you read the ten items.
- Start it and stand at the front for a full minute, hood up, radio off. A rhythmic tick that follows engine speed and does not fade as it warms → item 5, and read the triage box again. A tick loudest near the exhaust manifold that fades as the truck warms → item 10.
- Pull the dipstick and note the level against the marks. Low with under 3,000 miles since the change on a V8 → item 4.
- Scan for codes if you have a reader, or get a free read. A cylinder-specific misfire like P0307, especially with a Service StabiliTrak or traction control message alongside, is the AFM lifter signature — item 5.
- Drive it and coast down from 45 mph to a stop with light throttle. A fine shudder like rumble strips → item 1. Note whether it is worse warm.
- Press the brake pedal firmly at a stop, then again after the engine has been running a while. A pedal that feels noticeably harder than it used to → item 3, and check the VIN for the recall today.
- Look at the cab corners, rocker panels and the bed lip behind the rear wheels, then get underneath with a light and look at the brake lines. Bubbling or flaking → item 9, which on an older truck outranks everything mechanical.

What actually determines your number
Which engine. Bigger than mileage and bigger than year. The single most expensive characteristic repair on this list does not exist on the 4.3-litre V6.
Whether the camshaft survived. Within item 5, this is the whole ballgame: lifters alone versus lifters plus camshaft plus cleanup is roughly a $2,500 swing, and the variable that decides it is how long the truck was driven ticking.
Whether a recall or documented procedure applies. Two items below have been the subject of factory action. Checking is free, and it is the highest-return five minutes in this guide.
Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labor-heavy work, and a valvetrain job is nothing but labor. The real exception is transmission control programming, which sometimes needs dealer-level tooling. The full comparison maps which jobs those are.
Whether you tow. Towing loads the eight-speed and the valvetrain far harder than commuting. A towed truck at 80,000 miles has the maintenance profile of a commuting truck at 140,000, and every interval in this guide should be shortened accordingly.
Oil discipline. This is the one lever an owner fully controls, and on this engine family it is not a platitude. Extended intervals and low oil pressure are consistently associated with lifter failure. Strict 5,000-mile changes with the correct specification are the cheapest insurance available.
Your climate. In a salt state, corrosion is not a footnote — it is the largest reported repair category on trucks of this age.
The ten problems, in the order they arrive
1 · Eight-speed converter clutch shudder — 20,000 to 80,000 miles (2015+)
The tell. A fine, high-frequency vibration like driving over a rumble strip, felt at light throttle at steady speed or while coasting down toward a stop. Worse when the transmission is warm. It disappears under hard acceleration. Some owners first assume brake pads.
What it actually is. The torque converter clutch is chattering rather than gripping cleanly, because the friction material and the fluid have both aged past the point where they hold a smooth partial lock. GM documented a fluid exchange procedure for this condition, and the current-specification fluid is central to it.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Fluid. A full exchange with the correct current-specification fluid runs $300-$600 and gives many trucks thousands of miles of relief. It gets skipped because "torque converter shudder" has a known part number attached, and quoting the part is faster than quoting the procedure.
The honest limitation, which most articles will not tell you. For a meaningful share of trucks the fluid exchange is a bandage rather than a cure — the shudder returns after several thousand miles because the converter clutch itself has degraded. That does not make the fluid step wrong; it makes it a cheap diagnostic that either buys you years or tells you what you are dealing with. Ask the shop to note the mileage at the exchange so you can measure how long relief lasted.
The confusion worth naming. An early collapsing lifter can also produce a shudder while slowing down. If you have any new tick alongside the shudder, treat the tick as the primary symptom and read item 5 first.
At the shop — say this: "I'd like a fluid exchange with the current-specification fluid as the first step, with the mileage noted on the invoice. If the shudder returns within a few thousand miles, then let's discuss the converter rather than repeating the flush."
2 · Reduced Engine Power and the throttle body — 20,000 to 80,000 miles
The tell. A "Reduced Engine Power" message, the truck dropping into a limited-power limp mode, sometimes clearing on a restart. Often intermittent for weeks before it becomes constant.
What it actually is. The electronic throttle body contains position sensors and a motor. When the readings disagree or the plate sticks, the computer defaults to limp mode to protect the engine. It is a component fault, not an engine fault.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Carbon fouling on the throttle plate and a corroded or loose connector. Cleaning is a $0-$120 job, reseating a connector costs nothing, and both are worth doing before a part is ordered. They get skipped because a code points cleanly at a part number and the part is in stock.
Fix it yourself — a genuine one. Throttle body cleaning is among the friendliest jobs on this truck: a can of throttle body cleaner, a soft cloth, twenty minutes, and no special tools. The honest limit: do not scrub the plate aggressively or touch the sensor area with solvent-soaked cloth — the coating and the electronics are both damageable, and a wrecked throttle body costs you the $350-$900 you were trying to avoid. If the message returns within a week of cleaning, the part is genuinely failing.
At the shop — say this: "Can we clean the throttle body and inspect the connector and wiring before replacing it? And is there any bulletin covering this message on my VIN?"

3 · Brake vacuum pump — 30,000 to 90,000 miles
The tell. The brake pedal feels harder than it used to and requires more effort for the same stop. It can come and go. Because it degrades gradually, many drivers adapt without registering that anything changed — which is exactly what makes it dangerous.
What it actually is. The vacuum pump that provides power brake assist degrades, reducing assist. Reduced assist means longer stopping distances with the same pedal pressure. This was the subject of a federal recall, which is the strongest possible signal that it is not a nuisance item.
The cheap cause that is free money. Run your VIN against the federal recall database and GM's own lookup. Recall work is performed at no charge. Owners have paid for diagnosis and repair of a condition a dealer would have fixed for nothing, simply because nobody checked.
How to test it yourself in ten seconds. With the engine off, pump the brake pedal several times until it goes hard. Hold pressure and start the engine. The pedal should sink noticeably as assist arrives. If it barely moves, assist is weak — take it in rather than adapting to it.
At the shop — say this: "The pedal feels harder than it used to. Can you check my VIN against open recalls including the brake vacuum pump action, and test the assist rather than just the pads?"
4 · Oil consumption on the V8 — 40,000 to 100,000 miles
The tell. The level drops between changes with no external leak and no smoke you would notice. Owners commonly report being down half a quart to a quart at the 5,000-mile mark.
What it actually is. On AFM engines, the cylinder-deactivation cycle and the associated oil management contribute to consumption. It is widely reported across this engine family rather than being one bad batch.
Why it matters more than the cost of oil. Low oil level means lower oil pressure, and low oil pressure is one of the conditions consistently associated with AFM lifter failure. Consumption is therefore not merely an expense — it is the mechanism by which a $10 problem becomes item 5. Owners who let the level ride low between long intervals are the ones who show up with a collapsed lifter.
The cheap cause that is entirely free. Checking. Every second fuel fill, thirty seconds, a quart in the back seat. At the shop — say this: "I'd like a documented oil-consumption test — measured fill, sealed, driven, re-measured — and I want the oil pressure reading recorded at idle and at 2,000 rpm while we're at it."
5 · AFM and DFM lifter failure — 60,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. A loud, rhythmic tick that owners consistently describe as a typewriter, following engine speed and not fading as the engine warms. Then a rough idle, a misfire — very often cylinder-specific, with P0307 appearing repeatedly in owner reports — reduced power, and frequently a Service StabiliTrak or traction control message that seems unrelated but arrives with it. Some owners notice a shudder while slowing down first, weeks before the tick.
What it actually is. The special hydraulic lifters that collapse to deactivate cylinders are a known failure point. When one collapses or its roller fails, the valve stops opening properly. The serious part is what follows: a failed lifter can damage the camshaft, and the metal it sheds circulates through the engine. That is the difference between a lifter job and an engine job.
The cheap cause that gets skipped — and it is the timing, not a part. There is no $50 alternative diagnosis here. What there is, and what gets skipped, is acting on the tick immediately. The confirmation that costs nothing. The code names the cylinder. Ask the shop to compare that cylinder's compression and to inspect the pushrod for bend — a bent pushrod alongside a collapsed lifter is close to diagnostic. Also ask for the oil pressure reading, because low pressure both causes and results from this.
The three postures on AFM, honestly. If the engine is already coming apart, deleting the system during the repair removes the failure mode and typically lands at $2,500-$5,000 with new lifters and camshaft. If the engine is healthy and you plan to keep the truck a long time, a disabler at roughly $200-$350 prevents the truck entering four-cylinder mode — but owners and technicians both report lifters still failing with disablers fitted, so it reduces risk rather than removing it. 6 · Timing chain stretch and cam phaser wear — 60,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. A rattle for one to three seconds on a cold start that fades as oil pressure builds, and codes in the crank-cam correlation family. Over months the rattle gets longer rather than louder — that progression is the diagnostic pattern.
What it actually is. The timing chain stretches and the phasers wear, so the camshaft and crankshaft positions drift out of the tolerance the computer expects. Because phasers are hydraulic and run on engine oil through fine passages, oil condition is directly implicated.
The cheap cause that gets skipped, and it is nearly free. Fresh oil and filter of the correct specification, then a week of driving to see whether the code returns. Correlation codes resolve on their own a meaningful share of the time because the fault was oil condition rather than a stretched chain. Any shop quoting a timing job before confirming a fresh, correct oil fill has skipped the free step.
How to tell this apart from item 5, which matters enormously. A lifter tick follows engine speed and persists once warm. This rattle appears only in the first seconds after a cold start and then goes away. Duration and warm-up behaviour separate a $1,500 job from a $6,000 one, and that distinction is exactly what a recorded comparison answers better than memory. At the shop — say this: "Fresh oil at the correct spec first, then re-check whether the correlation code returns after a week. If it does, I want the chain stretch measured or shown to me rather than inferred from the code."
7 · P0700 and the 6L80 control module — 70,000 to 140,000 miles
The tell. A check-engine light with P0700, often alongside harsh or erratic shifts, sometimes limp mode. Occasionally no drivability symptom at all.
What it actually is. The transmission control module logged its own fault and raised P0700 in the engine computer as a flag saying "look over here." A basic code reader sees only the flag. On this transmission the actual fault is frequently the integrated control module itself, and on older trucks a shift solenoid.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Reading the transmission module's own codes. If the estimate says only "P0700," nobody has diagnosed anything yet. Ask for the sub-codes in writing, plus fluid level and condition, and check the harness connector for corrosion or oil intrusion — a wiring fault mimics an internal problem exactly.

At the shop — say this: "P0700 is a pointer code. What are the actual codes stored in the transmission module? I'd like them listed on the estimate along with fluid condition before we discuss internal work."
8 · Brakes and front hub bearings — 80,000 to 150,000 miles
The tell. For brakes: squeal that stops under hard pressure, then grinding if ignored. For hubs: a droning hum that rises with road speed, changes when you steer gently left and right, and is often accompanied by a wheel-speed sensor code or an intermittent ABS or traction light.
What it actually is. Both are wear items on a heavy vehicle. Truck brakes work harder than car brakes by definition, and towing shortens every interval. Hub assemblies on a 4WD truck integrate the bearing and the speed sensor, which is why an electrical warning can be the first sign of a mechanical failure.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A worn or cupped tire produces a drone almost identical to a failing hub bearing. Rotating the tires and driving it costs nothing and rules out the cheap explanation. For brakes: ask for pad thickness in millimetres rather than a verdict — above 4mm you are being sold time you already have.
The free confirmation for a hub. With the truck safely supported, rock the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and listen while spinning it by hand. Play or a gritty rumble is the bearing. Ask to be shown this rather than told about it.
Fix it yourself — brakes yes, hubs with caution. Front pads and rotors on this truck are a realistic driveway job: $160-$280 in parts, three hours, jack stands mandatory, and most parts stores lend the caliper tool free. The honest limit: a hub assembly is a different matter. The axle nut and hub bolts are torque-critical on a vehicle this heavy, the bolts are frequently seized solid by corrosion, and a hub fitted to the wrong torque fails early or damages the wheel-speed sensor you just paid for. If the truck has spent winters on salted roads, hand the hub to a shop with an impact gun and a torque wrench and keep the brake job for yourself.
At the shop — say this: "Before we replace a hub, can you rotate the tires and confirm the noise pattern, and show me the play by hand on the lift? And for the brakes, what's the actual pad thickness in millimetres?"
Is it safe to keep driving a Silverado with a lifter tick? No, and this is the one place in this guide where the cautious answer is also the cheap one. A collapsing AFM lifter does not simply stop working; its roller can disintegrate and score the camshaft, and the metal it sheds circulates through the oil system into bearings and passages. The tell. Bubbling at the cab corners and rocker panels, flaking along the bed lip behind the rear wheels, and — the one that matters most — crusty, scaling brake lines and fuel lines underneath. Also corroded exhaust hangers and a subframe that sheds flakes when tapped.
What it actually is. Exposure, not a defect. But it behaves like a failure because it has a point of no return, and because brake line corrosion is a safety item rather than a cosmetic one.
The cheap cause that gets skipped — and it is free. Looking. A yearly five-minute inspection with a flashlight catches surface corrosion while treatment is $150-$400 rather than a $1,500 panel or a full brake line replacement. Nobody schedules it because there is no light for it and no service interval, so put it in the calendar beside the oil change.
Why it decides the keep-or-sell question. Owner-reported repair distributions for trucks of this era routinely show paint, rust, leaks and rattles as the biggest single category — larger than the engine. 10 · Exhaust manifolds, converters and carbon — 120,000 miles and up
The tell. A tick loudest at cold start that fades noticeably as the truck warms, often clearly coming from low on the side of the engine rather than the top. For converters: a steady light with P0420 or P0430 and frequently no drivability symptom. For carbon: hesitation, rough cold running and misfire codes on a direct-injection engine.
What it actually is. Exhaust manifold bolts and studs break or loosen, and the resulting small leak ticks loudly when the metal is cold and contracted, then quiets as everything expands. Converters wear out or get poisoned by a long-running misfire. Carbon accumulates on intake valves on direct-injection engines because fuel no longer washes them.
The distinction that saves you thousands, in both directions. A manifold tick fades with warm-up and is loudest low down. A lifter tick persists warm, follows engine speed, and comes with a cylinder-specific misfire. Confusing them costs money either way: paying for a valvetrain job you did not need, or driving on a lifter you thought was an exhaust leak. Record it and compare cold against warm — that single comparison is the whole diagnosis.
The cheap causes. For the manifold: sometimes it is genuinely just bolts and a gasket at the low end of the range. For P0420: a lazy downstream oxygen sensor at $180-$350 or an upstream exhaust leak — and note that item 10's own manifold leak can set item 10's converter code, which is a neat trap. For carbon: walnut blasting at $400-$800 is a maintenance item, not a failure.
At the shop — say this: "The tick fades as it warms, so I think exhaust rather than valvetrain — can you confirm which? And if there's a P0420, I want the Mode 6 catalyst values and the exhaust leak ruled out before anyone quotes a converter."
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up, because that is the direction the money runs. Note what sits at the top of the list on this truck: a free VIN check, a free look underneath, and a $70 oil change. Three of the four biggest bills at the bottom are downstream of that $70 line item being skipped.
Your number, by which Silverado you drive
Two rows there invert the guide rather than adjusting it. A 4.3-litre V6 owner can ignore items 4, 5 and 6 almost entirely and should read this as a chassis-and-corrosion guide instead — which makes it a genuinely cheap truck to run. Should you delete or disable AFM? The honest answer
This is the second thing every Silverado owner searches after the first tick, and the internet answers it badly in both directions. There are three defensible positions and the right one depends entirely on your situation.
If the engine is already coming apart. Delete it. You are paying the labor once, the parts difference is modest against the total, and you remove the failure mode permanently. A repair including lifters, camshaft and delete typically lands at $2,500-$5,000, against $5,000-$9,000 for a remanufactured engine, so under roughly 150,000 miles on an otherwise sound truck this is usually the right economics. Ask specifically whether the reprogramming is included, because a delete without the tune is an incomplete job.
If the engine is healthy and you are keeping the truck long-term. A disabler module at roughly $200-$350 prevents the truck from entering four-cylinder mode. This is a hedge rather than a cure: owners and technicians both report lifters failing with disablers fitted, because the lifters remain the same parts under the same oil conditions. It also does not touch oil consumption in every case. Treat it as risk reduction with an honest failure rate, not insurance.
If you are selling within a couple of years. Do nothing structural. Strict 5,000-mile oil changes with the correct specification, checking the level every second fill, and never letting it run low buy you most of the available protection for the price of the oil. Low oil pressure is consistently implicated in these failures, and it is the one variable fully under your control.
What nobody should do. Ignore a tick because a disabler is fitted. The module changes how the engine runs; it does not change what a collapsing lifter does to a camshaft.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 — the write-up. "Can you read back the complaint as written?" "Tick following engine speed, persists warm, with a cylinder-three misfire" produces a different diagnosis from "engine noise." On this truck that difference is thousands.
Checkpoint 2 — the VIN question. "Any open recalls or bulletins covering this?" The brake vacuum pump and the 6.2-litre bearing action both make this free money worth asking for.
Checkpoint 3 — the diagnostic fee. "What's the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer, usually credited. Settle it before work starts.
Checkpoint 4 — the evidence. "Can you show me?" Pad thickness in millimetres, play in a hub by hand, oil pressure at idle and at 2,000 rpm, metal in the oil filter cut open, the bent pushrod. Everything here has a physical confirmation.
Checkpoint 5 — the cheap cause. "Was it ruled out, and how?" Tire rotation before a hub. Fluid before a converter. Oil before timing parts. Cleaning before a throttle body. Sub-codes before a transmission.
Checkpoint 6 — the authorisation ceiling. "Call me before anything over this figure." Name it out loud, and on a valvetrain job ask for photographs of the camshaft before reassembly. The dispute guide covers what to do when that gets ignored.
Three diagnostic traps that cost Silverado owners the most
Trap 1: the tick that becomes an engine. The situation: a new typewriter tick on a 5.3 at 112,000 miles, truck still drives fine. What the shop says: "Bring it in next week, we're booked." What is really happening: if it is a collapsing AFM lifter, that week of driving is what puts metal through the engine and moves the bill from lifters to lifters plus camshaft plus cleanup. Price versus bill: $2,000-$4,500 against $5,000-$9,000 at the far end. Your protective question: "Is it safe to drive this until my appointment, or should I stop now?" And if nobody will answer that, park it.
Trap 2: the pointer code quoted as a rebuild. The situation: P0700 on a 6L80 truck at 128,000 miles with slightly firm shifts. What the shop says: "Transmission's going. Let's talk about a rebuild." What is really happening: P0700 is a flag with no repair of its own. On this transmission the actual fault is frequently the control module or a solenoid. Price versus bill: $300-$1,600 against several thousand. Your protective question: "What codes are stored in the transmission module itself? I want them on the estimate before we discuss internals."
Trap 3: the manifold tick treated as a lifter — or the reverse. The situation: a tick at cold start on a 5.3 at 140,000 miles. What the shop says, version one: "That's the AFM lifters, they all do it." What is really happening: if the tick fades as the truck warms and is loudest low on the side of the engine, it is far more likely a broken exhaust manifold stud at $400-$900. The reverse error is worse: assuming a persistent warm tick is "just the exhaust" and driving on a failing lifter. Price versus bill: $400-$900 against $2,000-$7,000 — in either direction. Your protective question: "Does the tick fade as it warms up, and can you confirm the source with a stethoscope before we open anything?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.
Scenario 1 — the week that costs $3,000. A 5.3-litre truck at 112,000 miles develops a typewriter tick with a cylinder-specific misfire. Parked immediately and diagnosed, the camshaft is intact and the job is lifters at roughly $2,000-$4,500. Driven for another two weeks of commuting, the camshaft is scored and metal has circulated, and the realistic figure moves toward the $6,500 that owner reports on affected trucks average. Lesson: on this specific failure the variable that sets the price is not the shop's honesty or the parts supplier. It is the calendar.
Scenario 2 — the $4,800 rebuild that can be $450. P0700 on a 6L80 truck at 128,000 miles, shifts described as firm, quoted as a rebuild. Reading the transmission module's own codes — the step the pointer code exists to prompt — routinely surfaces a control module or solenoid fault instead, at a fraction of the price. Lesson: a pointer code quoted as an assembly is the single highest-leverage question available, and it is one sentence long.
Scenario 3 — the shudder that is a $400 diagnostic. An eight-speed truck at 58,000 miles shuddering while coasting, quoted at $2,800 for a torque converter. A current-specification fluid exchange at roughly $450 either resolves it for thousands of miles or tells you within a few thousand that the converter genuinely is the answer. Either outcome is worth having before spending $2,800. Lesson: when the cheap intervention and the expensive one treat the same component, the cheap one is a diagnostic step rather than a gamble.
How can you tell a real Silverado failure from an unnecessary repair quote? Apply two tests to every line on the estimate. First the VIN test: ask whether any open recall or bulletin covers the symptom, because two items in this guide have been the subject of factory action and the answer is free. Second the cheap-cause test: every failure here has one inexpensive cause that should be ruled out first. A tire rotation before a hub bearing. Fluid before a torque converter. Fresh oil before timing components. Cleaning before a throttle body. Transmission sub-codes before any talk of a rebuild. Warm-up behaviour before a valvetrain teardown. None of these takes a shop longer than fifteen minutes, and each has produced four-figure savings for real owners. Then ask to be shown the evidence rather than told the conclusion: millimetres, oil pressure readings, play by hand, a cut-open filter. Your situation right now: four playbooks
"There's a new tick." Stop driving it. Get the codes read. If a cylinder-specific misfire is present alongside the tick on a V8 with AFM, do not drive it to a further appointment — that is the single most expensive mile you can drive on this truck. Everything else in this guide can wait a week; this cannot.
"I have a quote in my hand." Find your item, read its cheap-cause paragraph, say its script. Ask whether a recall applies. Ask for the diagnostic fee to be credited. On any valvetrain job, ask for photographs of the camshaft before reassembly.
"Nothing's wrong, I just bought it." Do the six-minute check today. Run the VIN through the federal recall database and GM's lookup. Then set three reminders: oil every 5,000 miles with the correct specification, transmission fluid at your next 45,000-mile mark, and a rust inspection every spring if you live where roads are salted. That is the entire preventive programme for this truck.
"160,000 miles and I'm deciding whether to keep it." Price the specific items actually due rather than a vague sense of decline, and get the underside photographed. In a dry state a sound truck typically needs $1,500-$3,000 against a replacement at $45,000-plus, so keeping it wins easily. In a salt state, corroded brake lines and cab corners can flip that answer entirely, and no engine estimate will surface them.
After the repair: verify, then prevent
Verify within a week. Brakes: no squeal, straight stops, no pull. Shudder: the same coasting test on the same road, and note the mileage so you can measure how long relief lasts. Valvetrain: no tick at any temperature, no misfire codes across two full drive cycles, and ask for the old parts back. Hub: the drone gone at the speed where it lived.
Cut the oil filter open after a valvetrain repair. Ask the shop to do it at the first oil change afterwards and to show you. Metal in that filter is the early warning that cleanup was incomplete, and it is far cheaper to find at 500 miles than at 5,000.
Record the before and after. Thirty seconds from the same position is the cheapest proof of repair that exists, and the strongest position you can hold if the noise returns inside a parts warranty.
Prevent the next one. Oil every 5,000 miles with the correct specification, checked every second fuel fill. Transmission fluid around every 45,000 miles rather than never. A yearly look underneath. That short list prevents or delays four of the ten items above, including the most expensive one.

What we looked for and did not find: a GM special-coverage or customer-satisfaction program for AFM lifter failure on the 5.3 and 6.2 — the only GM document on the subject is a diagnostic bulletin (15-06-01-002H, misfire and tick with lifter replacement), and it was not available on NHTSA's server to link. Lifter repairs on 2014-2019 trucks are therefore an out-of-pocket item unless a dealer offers goodwill. Recall eligibility depends on VIN — check it before paying for a brake pump or an L87 engine diagnosis.
