🚨 60-Second Triage — EcoDiesel with coolant loss, white exhaust smoke or a burning smell: that is the EGR cooler failure pattern, and the recall exists because it can cause a fire. Park outside and away from structures if you suspect it. A tick that persists once the engine is warm, with a misfire code: stop driving — that is the valvetrain, not the exhaust. Sudden power loss on a diesel: the high-pressure fuel pump campaigns cover exactly that. Engine stall with no restart on a 2019-2020 diesel: reluctor wheel recall. A tick that fades as it warms: almost certainly manifold bolts — item 3, and it is a few hundred dollars.
The most expensive sentence on this truck is "it's just the HEMI tick."
On 2009-2024 Ram 1500 trucks with the 5.7-litre HEMI, the factory exhaust manifold bolts and studs snap from repeated heat cycling, and the cast manifolds can warp or crack. That leak ticks — loudly, and most obviously on a cold start. It sounds a great deal like the other thing that ticks on this engine: MDS lifter collapse with camshaft lobe wear, which runs $2,500 to $7,000.
The manifold repair is a few hundred dollars. The valvetrain repair is up to twenty times that. And the free thing that separates them is whether the noise fades as the engine warms.
The other half of this guide belongs to the diesel. NHTSA recall 19V-757 covers 107,898 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 1500 Classic trucks with the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel, where the EGR cooler can crack from thermal fatigue and let coolant into the running engine, where it can combust and cause a fire. A class action followed — Crawford v. FCA US LLC in the Eastern District of Michigan — with a fairness hearing scheduled for 17 March 2026.

How to use this guide
Identify your engine first — it splits this list almost in half — then find your mileage. Every entry has the same parts: the tell, what it actually is, the 2026 price, the cheap cause that gets skipped, and where this does not apply. Two entries include a do-it-yourself path with honest limits. Every entry ends with the exact sentence to say at the counter.
One rule overrides everything: on a Ram, time the tick against the temperature gauge. A noise that is loudest cold and quietens as the truck warms is an exhaust leak, because the metal expands and closes the gap. A noise that persists or worsens once warm is valvetrain. That single observation costs nothing, takes one warm-up cycle, and is worth thousands.
First: which Ram 1500 do you actually have?
5.7-litre HEMI V8, 2009-2024. The volume engine. Exhaust manifold bolts on one side of the ledger, MDS lifters on the other, and telling them apart is the theme of this guide.
3.0-litre EcoDiesel, 2014-2019. The EGR cooler fire recall and the class action. Widely advised against on the used market for that reason.
3.0-litre EcoDiesel, 2019-2020. Adds the CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump campaigns and the crankshaft reluctor wheel recall.
5.7 HEMI eTorque, 2021. A separate powertrain software recall for engine shutdown caused by an over-rich fuel condition, plus reported motor generator unit failures and parts delays.
Hurricane inline-six, later trucks. A different engine family entirely; the HEMI tick conversation does not apply.
Any truck with active-level air suspension. Adds a system with a cascade failure pattern.
The 6-minute check that dates your truck better than the odometer
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. This truck has drawn campaigns as recently as 2026. A lookup from last year is not a current answer.
- Cold start it and stand at the front for a full minute, then leave it running. Note whether the tick fades as the temperature gauge rises. That is the whole diagnosis for item 3 versus item 4.
- Check the coolant level and the oil, and look for white exhaust smoke on a diesel. Coolant loss with white smoke on an EcoDiesel is the EGR cooler pattern.
- Get codes read free. A cylinder-specific misfire alongside a persistent warm tick moves you from manifold to valvetrain.
- Drive it through several light-throttle gear changes at 30-50 mph. Harsh or erratic shifting on the eight-speed is item 7.
- On an air-suspended truck, look at it after it has sat overnight. A corner sitting low is the first sign of item 8.

What actually determines your number
Which engine. Larger than mileage or year. The HEMI and the EcoDiesel have almost nothing in common on this list.
Whether the tick was diagnosed by temperature. The single free observation that separates a few hundred dollars from several thousand.
Oil change history on a HEMI. The MDS lifters are the failure point, and long intervals are consistently implicated. On a used purchase this document matters more than the odometer.
Whether the recalls are complete. Four separate campaigns appear in this guide, all free, all verifiable by VIN.
Whether it has air suspension. One of the two uncovered big-ticket items, and it fails in a cascade.
Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labour-heavy work, but recall work must be performed by a Stellantis dealer. The full comparison maps which jobs go where.
The ten problems, in the order they arrive
1 · EcoDiesel EGR cooler fire risk — any mileage, 2014-2019 diesel
The tell. Coolant loss with no external puddle. White exhaust smoke. A burning smell. Loss of power. In the worst documented cases, sudden power loss followed by fire — one plaintiff in the class action experienced exactly that.
What it actually is. The exhaust gas recirculation cooler develops microscopic cracks from thermal fatigue, the repeated heating and cooling of ordinary use. A crack introduces preheated, vaporised coolant into the EGR system while the engine runs, and the intake manifold may combust if that mixture meets hydrocarbons and air.
The scope and the remedy. NHTSA recall 19V-757, announced October 2019, covering 107,898 trucks built between 2014 and 2019 — Ram 1500 and 1500 Classic with 3.0-litre EcoDiesel engines. At a Stellantis dealer the EGR cooler is replaced and the intake manifold inspected or replaced as needed, free of charge.
The complication owners hit — and this is documented. A proposed class action alleged FCA mishandled the recall: despite notifications, owners were routinely denied a remedy due to part unavailability, and dealers were advised that part supply was extremely limited and that the cooler should be replaced only if it had already failed. The suit cites a communication in which the automaker appears to make repair determinations based on part scarcity, and notes the automaker had previously received a record $70 million federal civil penalty over reporting failures.
The cheap cause that is free, and the follow-up that matters. Run the VIN. If the recall applies and has not been performed, book it — and if you are told the part is unavailable or that replacement requires prior failure, document that conversation in writing. If symptoms recur after a repair, return immediately and document for the campaign.
Where this does not apply. Petrol trucks are entirely outside this. If you have a HEMI and somebody mentions the EGR recall, they are describing a different vehicle.
At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against recall 19V-757, FCA number VB1, for the EGR cooler. If it applies, I want the cooler replaced and the intake manifold inspected, and if you tell me parts are unavailable I'd like that in writing."
2 · Front brakes — 20,000 to 70,000 miles
The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that stops under hard pressure — the wear indicator at roughly 3mm. Grinding is low, gritty and felt through the pedal.
What it actually is. Normal consumption on a heavy vehicle. Towing shortens every interval here substantially.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A squeal only on the first two damp-morning stops is surface rust — free. Ask for pad thickness in millimetres; above 4mm you are buying time you already have.
Where this does not apply. A truck used for regular towing should be measured rather than scheduled — mileage-based intervals badly underestimate wear under load.
Fix it yourself — realistic. Front pads and rotors are a genuine driveway job: $160-$300 in parts, three hours, jack stands rated for the weight. The honest limit: on a salted truck the caliper hardware is frequently seized, and what looks like three hours becomes a fight with corroded fasteners. If the first bolt does not move, stop before you round it.
At the shop — say this: "What's the actual pad thickness in millimetres front and rear, and are the rotors above minimum spec? If the pads are over 4 millimetres I'd rather wait."

3 · Exhaust manifold bolts — the tick that is usually this — 30,000 to 120,000 miles
The tell. A tick that is loudest on a cold start and fades noticeably as the engine warms. Often more audible from outside the truck, standing beside the front wheel, than from the cabin. No misfire code.
What it actually is. The factory exhaust manifold bolts and studs on the 5.7-litre HEMI snap from repeated heat cycling, and the cast manifolds themselves can warp or crack. The resulting small leak ticks in time with the engine — and quietens as the metal expands and closes the gap, which is precisely why the warm-up behaviour is diagnostic.
Why this matters more than the repair cost. The confusion between valvetrain noise and exhaust leaks is a recognised problem on this truck, and it runs in both directions. Paying for a valvetrain teardown when it was manifold bolts is expensive; assuming a persistent warm tick is "just the exhaust" and driving on a collapsing lifter is worse.
The cheap cause that gets skipped — and it is a diagnostic, not a part. Timing the noise against the temperature gauge. Cold start it, listen, and listen again ten minutes later. Fades means exhaust. Persists means valvetrain. That observation costs nothing and it directs everything after it.
Where this does not apply. Hurricane inline-six trucks and diesels are outside this. And a tick that arrives with a cylinder-specific misfire code is item 4 regardless of what it does when warm.
At the shop — say this: "The tick fades as it warms up, so I think exhaust manifold rather than valvetrain. Can you confirm the source with a stethoscope and check the manifold bolts before we discuss lifters?"
4 · MDS lifter collapse and camshaft wear — 40,000 to 140,000 miles
The tell. A tick that persists once the engine is warm, often with a cylinder-specific misfire code, a rough idle and sometimes reduced power. Unlike the manifold version it does not quieten with temperature.
What it actually is. The Multi Displacement System deactivates cylinders under light load to save fuel, using special lifters to do it. Those lifters collapse, and a collapsed lifter wears the camshaft lobe beneath it. Once lobe wear starts, the repair is no longer lifters — it is lifters plus a camshaft plus removing the metal that has circulated.
The prevention, which is the only real lever. High-quality synthetic oil of the correct specification, never extending oil change intervals, and avoiding excessive idling. A well-maintained HEMI is considerably more resistant to this than one run on long intervals. On a used purchase, oil change history is the most informative document available on this engine.
The cheap cause that gets skipped — again, it is timing rather than a part. Acting on the tick immediately. There is no $200 alternative diagnosis here, but there is a $4,000 difference between lifters caught early and a camshaft job with contamination. The most expensive decision available is deciding to finish the week.
Where this does not apply. Trucks without cylinder deactivation, and the Hurricane inline-six. And a tick that fades as the engine warms is item 3, which is why that free test comes first.
At the shop — say this: "The tick persists once warm and there's a cylinder-specific misfire, so I've stopped driving it. Before pricing anything I want to know whether the camshaft is damaged and whether there's metal in the oil, because that decides whether this is lifters or an engine."
5 · High-pressure fuel pump on the diesel — any mileage, 2019-2023
The tell. Sudden loss of power. Hard starting or no start. Rough running. Often with little warning beforehand.
What it actually is. The Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump can shed metal debris internally, and that debris travels through the injection system contaminating injectors, lines and rails. That is why an uncovered failure is so expensive — the pump is only the beginning of the parts list.
The cheap cause that is free. The VIN lookup against both campaigns. Recall remedies are performed at no charge, and on this failure the difference between covered and uncovered is measured in thousands.
Where this does not apply. Petrol trucks entirely. And on a diesel, a stall with an inability to restart may be item 6 rather than this — the reluctor wheel campaign covers that specific pattern.
At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against recalls 22V-767 and 23V-263 for the high-pressure fuel pump before any diagnosis. And if the pump has failed, I want to know what downstream contamination has been found."
Is the HEMI tick always expensive, or can it be a cheap repair? Either, and one free observation decides which. On 2009-2024 Ram 1500 trucks with the 5.7-litre HEMI there are two common sources of a rhythmic tick. The first is exhaust manifold bolts snapping from repeated heat cycling, with the cast manifolds sometimes warping; that leak is loudest cold and fades as the metal expands, and it costs a few hundred dollars. 6 · Diesel crankshaft reluctor wheel — any mileage, 2019-2020 diesel
The tell. The engine stalls while running and then will not restart. Distinct from item 5's pattern of gradual power loss, and distinct again from an ordinary no-start.
What it actually is. The reluctor wheel provides the crankshaft position signal. Without a valid signal the engine management cannot time injection, so the engine stops and will not restart. NHTSA campaign 23V-338 covers this on 2019-2020 diesel trucks.
The cheap cause that is free. The VIN lookup. A stall-and-no-restart on an affected diesel is a campaign question before it is a fuel system question, and diagnosing it as the latter can be an expensive detour.
Where this does not apply. Petrol trucks, and diesels outside the campaign years. And a no-start that presents as a single solid click with bright dash lights is a starter — the clicking guide separates the patterns.
At the shop — say this: "It stalled and won't restart. Please check this VIN against recall 23V-338 for the crankshaft reluctor wheel before we diagnose the fuel system."
7 · ZF eight-speed transmission behaviour — 30,000 to 120,000 miles
The tell. Harsh or erratic shifting, hesitation, hunting between gears at light throttle, occasionally limp mode. Sometimes a check-engine light with a pointer code and no drivability complaint at all.
What it actually is. An eight-speed automatic with a complex shift schedule managed largely in software. It is the highest-volume owner complaint on this truck, and because no safety recall attaches to shift quality, the repair falls to the owner.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The current transmission control calibration, plus fluid condition. Shift-quality complaints on modern automatics are frequently addressed by software before hardware, and when there is no campaign to absorb a wrong guess, sequence matters more rather than less.
The Ram-specific accelerant. Towing. A truck that has pulled a trailer for 70,000 miles has the thermal history of one that commuted for 130,000, and every interval in this guide should be shortened for it.

At the shop — say this: "Before any hardware, is the transmission control module on the current calibration, and what's the fluid condition? Please note both on the order, and I'll drive it a week before we go further."
8 · Air suspension — 50,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. One corner sitting low after the truck has been parked overnight. A compressor running longer or more often than it used to. A suspension warning message. Later, a refusal to raise or a drop while driving.
What it actually is. Air springs develop leaks as the rubber ages. A leaking spring makes the compressor work harder, and an overworked compressor fails. The failure order is spring first, compressor second, and the second one is the expensive one — which is the cascade owners describe.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The leak itself, found early. A single spring replaced when it starts weeping is a fraction of a spring plus a compressor plus a dryer. Ask for a leak test with soapy solution on springs and fittings before anyone quotes a compressor.
Where this does not apply — and this is worth knowing before you buy. The standard coil spring suspension on this truck is regarded as excellent and does not carry this exposure at all. If long-term running cost matters more to you than ride-height adjustment, the coil version removes one of the two largest uncovered bills in this guide.
At the shop — say this: "Can you leak-test the air springs and fittings before quoting a compressor? And if a spring is leaking, has the compressor already been damaged running against it?"
Which Ram 1500 engine is the safest used buy? The 5.7-litre HEMI, provided the oil change history holds up, and the reasoning is about what you can control rather than about headline reliability. The HEMI is a powerful and generally solid workhorse whose known risk, MDS lifter failure, is strongly influenced by maintenance: high-quality synthetic oil of the correct specification, intervals never extended, and idling kept down. That makes the service folder the most informative document on the vehicle. The 3.0-litre EcoDiesel from 2014 to 2019 sits at the other end, carrying a fire-risk recall covering 107,898 trucks plus, on 2019-2020 vehicles, two high-pressure fuel pump campaigns and a crankshaft reluctor wheel recall — a stack of exposures that the fuel economy advantage does not offset for most private owners. 9 · Wheel bearings and electrical campaigns — 60,000 to 140,000 miles
The tell. For a bearing: a hum from around 40-50 mph rising with road speed and changing when you steer gently. For the campaign items: a stability control warning light, or an instrument cluster that goes blank at startup or while driving.
What it actually is. Ordinary bearing wear on one hand; on the other, two documented campaigns — front wheel bearing encoder ring damage that disables electronic stability control, and a digital instrument cluster fault. Both have free remedies.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. For the hum: a cupped tire produces nearly the same drone, so rotate and drive first. For the warning lights: the VIN lookup, because a stability control message on this truck may be campaign work rather than a repair you fund.
The free confirmation for a bearing. With the truck safely supported, spin the wheel by hand listening for a gritty rumble, then rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock feeling for play.
Fix it yourself — the cheap half only. Sway bar end links, the usual cause of a clunk over bumps rather than a hum, are a genuine driveway job: $50-$120 in parts, an hour. The honest limit: the hub bearing is not, on a truck this heavy. The axle nut is torque-critical, the bolts seize on salted trucks, and a hub fitted to the wrong torque fails early or damages the very speed sensor that the campaign above concerns.
At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I steer, so I think a bearing — but please check the VIN against recall 24V794 first, and rotate the tires before ordering parts."
10 · Catalytic converter — 120,000 miles and up
The tell. A steady check-engine light with P0420, or P0430 for the second bank, often with no drivability symptom. Frequently the first sign is failing an emissions inspection.
What it actually is. The computer compares the oxygen sensors before and after the converter; when their readings converge, the code sets. That does not say the converter is broken.
The cheap causes, and one is specific to this truck. A lazy downstream sensor ($180-$350 installed). An unresolved misfire poisoning the substrate. And — the one worth naming here — an exhaust manifold leak upstream, which on a HEMI is item 3 and is both cheaper and more likely than a converter at moderate mileage.
The one demand that changes the conversation: Mode 6. Mode $06 reports the catalyst monitor's actual test result as a number against threshold. Ask for those values in writing, and on a V8 ask for both banks separately so a single-bank failure is not quoted as two.
Where this does not apply. If a misfire code or a manifold leak is present alongside P0420, resolve those first — replacing a converter while the thing that poisoned it is still running is money spent twice.
At the shop — say this: "Before we replace anything I want the Mode 6 catalyst values for each bank separately, the downstream sensors actually tested rather than assumed, and any exhaust manifold leak or misfire resolved first."
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up. The gap between the manifold line and the lifter line is the widest single spread in this entire guide, and the thing that decides which one you pay is a free observation during one warm-up cycle.
Your number, by which Ram you drive
Two rows there invert the guide. A coil-sprung truck deletes one of the two uncovered big-ticket items outright. And a 2022-onward truck sits in materially better shape than the years this model's reputation was built on — most early-production issues were addressed, and the remaining risk is ordinary.
Should you buy a used Ram 1500, and which engine?
Most people searching for Ram problems are deciding what to buy, and here the answer separates cleanly by engine.
The HEMI case. A powerful and generally solid workhorse, with one known risk that is largely governed by maintenance. Use high-quality synthetic oil of the correct specification, never extend intervals, avoid excessive idling. On a used purchase, ask for oil change history before you ask about anything else — a well-maintained HEMI is far more resistant to lifter failure than one that was not.
The EcoDiesel case, stated bluntly. The 2014-2019 engine is widely advised against for most used buyers. The documented EGR fire risk, combined with the high-pressure fuel pump and reluctor wheel campaigns on 2019-2020 trucks, is a stack of exposures that the fuel economy advantage does not offset for a private owner. If you buy one anyway, campaign completion is not a nice-to-have.
The specification case. Avoid active-level air suspension if long-term cost matters. The ride comfort is real, but the cascade pattern is real too, and the standard coil suspension is excellent.
The five-minute pre-purchase procedure:
- Run the VIN and note every campaign, open and completed. On a diesel expect several.
- Cold start it yourself and listen for a tick — then let it warm up and listen again. That is the single most valuable minute of the viewing.
- Ask for oil change records on any HEMI.
- Check whether it has air springs or coils.
- Drive it at light throttle through several gear changes for at least ten minutes.
- Ask about TSBs 23-074-23 and 23-098-23 if there is any sign of rear window leakage.
The short version: a well-maintained 2022-onward HEMI on coil springs with campaigns completed is a straightforward used truck. A 2014-2019 EcoDiesel with an unverified recall history is the opposite end of this guide.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 — the VIN question, dated today. "What campaigns show open on this VIN right now?" This truck has drawn campaigns as recently as 2026.
Checkpoint 2 — the temperature question. "Does the tick fade as it warms?" The Ram-specific checkpoint, and the one worth the most money.
Checkpoint 3 — the diagnostic fee. "What's the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer, usually credited.
Checkpoint 4 — the software question. "Is the transmission control module on the current calibration?" Before any eight-speed hardware.
Checkpoint 5 — the evidence. "Can you show me?" Millimetres of pad, stethoscope on the manifold, metal in a cut-open filter, Mode 6 values per bank.
Checkpoint 6 — the authorisation ceiling. "Call me before anything over this figure." On a valvetrain job, ask for photographs of the camshaft before reassembly. The dispute guide covers what to do when that gets ignored.
Three diagnostic traps that cost Ram owners the most
Trap 1: the tick priced from reputation. The situation: a cold-start tick on a 5.7 HEMI at 118,000 miles. What the shop says: "That's the HEMI tick. Lifters and cam, around $5,000." What is really happening: it may be. But manifold bolts snapping from heat cycling produce a very similar noise, the confusion is a recognised problem on this truck, and the warm-up behaviour separates them for free. Price versus bill: $400-$900 against $2,500-$7,000. Your protective question: "Does it fade as it warms up? Let's listen cold and again at operating temperature before we open anything."
Trap 2: the recall that was declined for parts. The situation: an EcoDiesel owner presenting for the EGR cooler recall. What the shop says: "The part is on back order, and we only replace it if it has already failed." What is really happening: a class action alleged precisely this — that dealers were advised part supply was extremely limited and that coolers should be replaced only where they had failed, with repair determinations apparently made on part scarcity. Price versus bill: the campaign is free; the fire risk is the point. Your protective question: "Please put in writing that the recall was requested and declined for parts availability, with today's date."
Trap 3: the compressor bought while the spring leaks. The situation: an air-suspended truck sitting low overnight, compressor running constantly. What the shop says: "Compressor's finished. That's the repair." What is really happening: it may well be finished — because it has been working against a leak. Replaced alone, it goes back to doing exactly that. Price versus bill: the same repair twice. Your protective question: "Was a leak test done on the springs and fittings, and are we replacing the cause or the casualty?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.
Scenario 1 — one warm-up cycle, two prices. A cold-start tick on a 5.7 HEMI at 118,000 miles. If it fades as the engine reaches operating temperature, the likely answer is manifold bolts at $400-$900. If it persists and arrives with a cylinder-specific misfire, it is the valvetrain at $2,500-$7,000. The truck does not change between those two outcomes; the observation does. Lesson: the cheapest diagnostic tool on this truck is a temperature gauge and ten minutes of patience.
Scenario 2 — the free recall that needed a paper trail. An EcoDiesel owner turned away because the EGR cooler part was unavailable and had not yet failed. The litigation record describes exactly this pattern, which means documenting the request and the refusal in writing is not paranoia — it is the position that protects a later claim. Lesson: when a recall is declined, get the refusal dated and in writing before you leave.
Scenario 3 — the lifter caught a week too late. A warm-persistent tick driven on for another fortnight of commuting. Caught at the tick stage the repair is lifters; driven on, the camshaft is scored and metal has circulated, and the figure moves toward the top of the range. Lesson: on this failure the variable that sets the price is the calendar, not the shop.
How can you tell a real Ram 1500 failure from an unnecessary repair quote? Two free checks carry most of the weight. First, the temperature test on any tick: a noise loudest cold that fades as the engine warms points at exhaust manifold bolts, a few hundred dollars, while one that persists warm with a cylinder-specific misfire points at MDS lifter collapse at $2,500 to $7,000. That confusion is recognised and costs money in both directions. Second, the VIN check performed today rather than remembered: this truck carries multiple campaigns including the EGR cooler fire recall on 107,898 EcoDiesel trucks, two fuel pump campaigns, a reluctor wheel recall and electrical campaigns, all free. Your situation right now: four playbooks
"There's a tick." Do not authorise anything until you have listened cold and again at operating temperature. If it persists warm with a misfire code, stop driving and read item 4. If it fades, read item 3 and relax somewhat.
"I have an EcoDiesel." Run the VIN against all four diesel campaigns today. If the EGR recall applies and is declined for parts, get that refusal in writing with a date.
"The transmission shifts badly." Calibration and fluid condition first, documented, then a week of driving. There is no campaign here to absorb a wrong guess.
"Nothing's wrong, I just bought it." Run the VIN. Note whether you have air or coil springs. Set the oil interval at the short end and keep the receipts — on a HEMI that folder is the single most valuable document you will own.
After the repair: verify, then prevent
Verify within a week. Tick: gone at both cold start and operating temperature. Recall work: completion documented against the VIN in writing. Transmission: same road, same light-throttle speeds, and note whether anything actually changed. Air suspension: level after three consecutive nights.
On any valvetrain repair, cut the oil filter open at the first change afterwards. Metal there is the early warning that cleanup was incomplete, and it is far cheaper to find at 500 miles than at 5,000.
Record the before and after, cold and warm. On this truck that pairing is the proof of repair, because the whole diagnosis turned on the difference between them. The recording guide has the protocol.
Prevent the next one. Correct-spec synthetic oil on the short interval, never extended, with idling minimised. Transmission fluid on a real interval, halved if you tow. Air spring leaks addressed the week you notice them. Those three lines address the two most expensive uncovered items in this guide.

- NHTSA recall 19V-757, FCA campaign VB1 — announced October 2019, covering 107,898 trucks built 2014-2019: Ram 1500 and 1500 Classic with 3.0-litre EcoDiesel engines. The EGR cooler is prone to developing cracks from thermal fatigue, introducing preheated vaporised coolant into the EGR system while the engine runs; the intake manifold may combust and result in a vehicle fire. Remedy at a Stellantis dealer: EGR cooler replaced and intake manifold inspected or replaced as needed, free of charge.
- Crawford v. FCA US LLC, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, before Judge Murphy, with Hagens Berman named co-lead class counsel. Reported settlement terms include a vehicle warranty extension covering repair of conditions caused by the EGR cooler for five years from the date the vehicle received the EGR cooler recall replacement; reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs already incurred during the extended warranty period; an allocation of up to $750,000 to reimburse class members for related expenses including tow trucks, rental cars and coolant; and $3,000 payments to class members submitting documentation that their vehicle caught fire due to the alleged defect. A fairness hearing was scheduled for 17 March 2026.
- Proposed class action regarding recall handling — alleging that despite notifications, drivers were routinely denied a remedy for the EGR cooler defect due to part unavailability, that dealerships were advised part supply was extremely limited and that the cooler should be replaced only if it had already failed, and citing a communication in which the automaker appears to make repair determinations based on part scarcity. The filing notes the automaker had previously received a record $70 million federal civil penalty over reporting failures.
- NHTSA recalls 22V-767 (2019-2020) and 23V-263 (2022-2023) — targeting the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump, where metal debris can contaminate the entire injection system and cause sudden power loss.
- NHTSA recall 23V-338 (2019-2020 diesel) — crankshaft reluctor wheel defect that can cause an engine stall and inability to restart.
- NHTSA recall 24V794 — front wheel bearing encoder ring damage disabling electronic stability control.
- NHTSA recalls 25V826 and 26V225 — digital instrument cluster going blank at startup or while driving.
- 2021 model year powertrain software recall — "Some 2021 MY Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with the 5.7L eTorque engine may experience an engine shut down caused by an over rich fuel condition under certain operating conditions."
- Exhaust manifold and valvetrain reporting — on 2009-2024 Ram 1500 5.7-litre HEMI trucks, factory exhaust manifold bolts and studs snap from repeated heat cycling and cast manifolds can warp or crack; the resulting tick is frequently confused with MDS lifter collapse and camshaft lobe wear, reported at $2,500-$7,000. The ZF eight-speed transmission is reported as the most commonly raised issue by owner report volume.
- TSBs 23-074-23 and 23-098-23 — rear window leaks, reported to be covered even where the standard warranty has expired.
