🚨 60-Second TriageUnexpected engine noises, sudden power loss, or smoke on a 2020-2022 hybrid: park and shut the engine off as soon as it is safe. That is Ford's own instruction under recall 22V-484, and the risk named is an engine compartment fire. Coolant level dropping with no puddle: internal coolant loss — stop driving and have it diagnosed before the next cold start. "Engine over temp, stop safely" or "Engine power reduced": pull over. Shifter says Park but the vehicle can roll: recall 22V-413 — do not park on any slope until it is checked. Startup misfire code P0316: not an annoyance; item 3, this week.

This is the one vehicle in our model series where a warning light can mean stop the car rather than book an appointment.

Five of the ten problems below have an NHTSA campaign number attached. Ford has recalled Escapes for coolant loss that could ignite on hot components, for a fuel line that could split, for a shifter bushing that lets the vehicle roll while indicating Park, and for hybrid engine failures that could release oil and fuel vapour near ignition sources. None of that makes the Escape unbuyable — every one of those campaigns has a free remedy. It does mean the VIN lookup is not optional on this vehicle the way it is optional on most.

The other half of this guide is ordinary: brakes, bearings, mounts, converters. But the expensive half is unusually well documented, which is good news for an owner who knows the numbers.

By the end you will know which of the ten is due at your mileage, what each costs in 2026, which claims rest on a document you can pull yourself, and the cheap cause that gets skipped when the expensive one is quoted first.

Every entry has the same parts: the tell, what it actually is, the 2026 price, the cheap cause that gets skipped, and where this does not apply. One rule overrides everything: on an Escape, coolant that disappears without a puddle is an emergency, not a top-up. External leaks drip on the driveway and give you weeks. Internal coolant loss goes into a cylinder, and the same coolant that costs $30 to replace destroys the engine it was meant to cool. Every serious Escape story in this guide runs through that one sentence.

First: which Escape do you actually have?

2013 with the 1.6-litre EcoBoost. The heaviest recall year. Cylinder head cup plug coolant loss with fire risk, plus a separate fuel line recall where Ford told owners to stop driving immediately and provided loaner vehicles.

2014-2019 with 1.5 or 1.6 EcoBoost. The coolant intrusion generation. Startup misfires logging P0316 are the early warning, and TSB 20-2100 and program 19B37 involve a PCM reprogram adjusting misfire detection and cooling fan strategy.

2020-2022 hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Covered by NHTSA 22V-484 for engine compartment fire risk following engine failure. Roughly 100,689 vehicles across Escape, Corsair and Maverick.

2020+ with the 1.5-litre three-cylinder or 2.0-litre. Newer, with less settled complaint history. Treat published failure mileages for these with caution.

Any year with the eight-speed automatic. Rough shifting complaints and, in some cases, replacement around $5,000.

The 5-minute check that dates your Escape better than the odometer

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. On this vehicle this is step one, not step six. It is free and takes two minutes.
  2. Check the coolant reservoir level and write it down. A level that falls over weeks with nothing on the driveway is internal loss until proven otherwise — item 3 or 4.
  3. Cold start it and listen for the first ten seconds. A stumble, rough running or a misfire that clears as it warms is the classic coolant-intrusion signature.
  4. Get codes read free at a parts store. P0316 is startup misfire and is the code that matters most on this vehicle.
  5. With the vehicle on a level surface, put it in Park and check whether the selector position matches reality before you release the brake. Any mismatch → recall 22V-413.
  6. Look at the service record for spark plugs. The 1.5 EcoBoost is sensitive to plug gap growth, and worn plugs trigger the same misfire code as something far worse.

What actually determines your number

Whether a campaign covers it. Five items here have campaign numbers. Recall remedies are performed free of charge, and this is the single largest cost variable on the vehicle.

How early a misfire was investigated. The difference between spark plugs and an engine on a coolant intrusion case is measured in weeks of driving, not in the quality of the repair.

Which engine. The 1.6 and 1.5 EcoBoost carry the coolant story. The hybrids carry a different campaign. Later three-cylinder and 2.0-litre cars have less settled histories.

Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labor-heavy work, but recall and campaign work can only be performed by a Ford dealer. The full comparison maps which jobs go where.

Whether the PCM software is current. Program 19B37 and TSB 20-2100 involve reprogramming that changes misfire detection logic and cooling fan strategy — free or cheap, and it belongs before parts.

Your tolerance for the transmission decision. Replacement around $5,000 on a vehicle worth two to three times that is a genuine sell-or-fix question, and it is better answered before it happens.

The tell. The gear selector position does not reliably match what the transmission is doing. Owners report the vehicle behaving as though it is in neutral, unusual noises when trying to move off, and — the serious version — the shifter reading Park while the vehicle can still roll.

What it actually is. A bushing on the transmission shifter cable degrades, so the linkage between what you select and what the transmission engages loses accuracy. The consequence named in the campaign is a rollaway risk, which is why this sits at position one despite being cheap.

The cheap cause that is free. The recall itself. Run the VIN through NHTSA's lookup and Ford's own recall page. Remedies under a safety recall are performed at no charge.

Where this does not apply. Not every Escape is in scope — the campaign covers specific build ranges. A VIN check answers it definitively in two minutes, which is why guessing is unnecessary here.

At the shop — say this: "Please check my VIN against recall 22V-413, Ford campaign 22S43, for the transmission shifter cable bushing. If it applies, I'd like the remedy performed, and I'd like the completion documented."

2 · Front brakes — 30,000 to 70,000 miles

The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that stops under hard pressure — the wear indicator at roughly 3mm. Grinding is low, gritty, and felt through the pedal.

What it actually is. Normal consumption on a vehicle heavier than a sedan, which is why the range sits slightly above a compact car's.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A squeal only on the first two damp-morning stops is surface rust — free. Ask for pad thickness in millimetres; above 4mm you are buying time you already have.

Where this does not apply. On hybrid and plug-in hybrid Escapes, regenerative braking does most of the deceleration and pads last dramatically longer. A hybrid owner quoted brakes at 45,000 miles should ask to see the measurement first.

Fix it yourself — realistic. Front pads and rotors are a genuine driveway job: $120-$220 in parts, two to three hours, jack stands mandatory. The honest limit: uneven wear side to side, or a seized slide pin, means a caliper problem — stop, because a dragging caliper destroys new parts within weeks.

At the shop — say this: "What's the actual pad thickness in millimetres front and rear, and are the rotors above minimum spec? If the pads are over 4 millimetres I'd rather wait."

The tell. A stumble or rough running in the first seconds after a cold start that clears as the engine warms, with code P0316 logged. It is intermittent by nature, which is precisely why it gets postponed.

What it actually is — two possibilities with the same code. The benign one: the 1.5-litre EcoBoost is sensitive to spark plug gap growth, and worn plugs trigger P0316 during the high-load startup phase. The serious one: coolant pooling in a cylinder while the vehicle sits, disrupting the first combustion cycles on the next cold start. That is the leading edge of coolant intrusion, and NHTSA complaint records include cases progressing from "spark plug failure" to "coolant intrusion in cylinder and engine failure" with quotes exceeding $8,000.

The cheap cause that gets skipped — and the order that matters. Replace all four spark plugs first, $40-$80 in parts. Then confirm the PCM is on current software: TSB 20-2100 and program 19B37 involve a reprogram that adjusts misfire detection logic and cooling fan strategy. Then, and this is the step nobody demands, have the coolant level checked and monitored over a week. Plugs that fix it are a happy ending; plugs that fix it for three weeks are a warning.

The confirmation that costs nothing. If a specific cylinder is named — for example P0302 — swap that ignition coil with a neighbouring cylinder and clear the code. If the misfire follows the coil, it is the coil. If it stays put, it is the plug, the injector, or something in that cylinder that should not be there.

Where this does not apply. Hybrid Escapes with the 2.5-litre engine are not part of the EcoBoost coolant intrusion story; their documented campaign is a different one, item 5.

At the shop — say this: "P0316 on this engine can be plugs or coolant intrusion. I want plugs replaced, the PCM checked against TSB 20-2100 and program 19B37, and the coolant level recorded now so we can re-check it in a week. I'd like all three noted on the invoice."

4 · Coolant loss with fire risk — 40,000 to 100,000 miles (1.6 EcoBoost)

The tell, in Ford's own words. Drivers get warning: a message reading "Engine Power Reduced to Lower Temps" or "Engine over temp, stop safely," with red warning lights and chimes. Those two phrases are worth memorising if you own one of these.

What it actually is. On the 2013 recall, the cylinder head cup plug — the freeze plug — could dislodge and dump coolant. The remedy sealed the existing plug and added a secondary cover. The separate overheating recall on 1.6-litre Escapes and Fusions covered engines that could overheat and leak coolant onto hot components including exhaust pipes, where glycol can ignite. Ford confirmed twelve fires involving the Escape and one involving the Fusion at the time. The cheap cause that is free. The recall. Both campaigns have free remedies. And there is a separate detail worth knowing: on the 1.6-litre fuel line recall, Ford instructed owners to stop driving immediately and provided loaner vehicles until repairs were completed — an unusually strong instruction that tells you how the manufacturer itself rated the risk.

Where this does not apply. These campaigns cover specific model years and build ranges, primarily 2013 vehicles with 1.6-litre engines. Later Escapes have the different coolant intrusion mechanism in item 3 rather than this one. A VIN lookup separates them definitively.

At the shop — say this: "Please check my VIN against recall 12V-431, Ford 12S39, and any other open campaigns. Separately, I want a cooling system pressure test and a check for internal coolant loss, because the level is dropping with nothing on the driveway."

5 · Hybrid engine compartment fire risk — 40,000 to 100,000 miles (2020-2022)

The tell, and Ford's own instruction. Owners were advised to park and shut off the engine as quickly as possible if they hear unexpected engine noises, notice a reduction in vehicle power, or see smoke. That is the manufacturer's language, and it is the clearest triage instruction in this entire guide.

What it actually is. On 2020-2022 Escape hybrids and plug-in hybrids with the 2.5-litre powertrain, an engine failure could release engine oil or fuel vapour into the engine compartment, where it can accumulate near hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire. Ford isolated the cause to manufacturing issues involving an engine block or oil pan breach. The campaign covered 100,689 vehicles across Escape, Lincoln Corsair and Ford Maverick.

What the remedy does, stated honestly. Dealers modify the under-engine shield and the active grille shutter. That manages what happens after an engine failure rather than preventing the failure itself, which is why knowing the three warning signs matters as much as having the remedy performed.

The cheap cause that is free. The recall. Check the VIN, have it done, keep the paperwork.

Where this does not apply. Non-hybrid Escapes are outside this campaign entirely. If you have a conventional EcoBoost car, items 3 and 4 are your coolant and engine story instead.

At the shop — say this: "Please check my VIN against recall 22V-484, Ford 22S47, for the hybrid engine compartment fire risk. If it applies I want the under-engine shield and grille shutter modification completed and documented."

Why does one misfire code on a Ford Escape range from $60 to $8,000? Because P0316, a startup misfire, has two completely different causes on the 1.5-litre EcoBoost and the code itself cannot tell them apart. The cheap cause is spark plug gap growth; this engine is sensitive to it, and worn plugs trigger the code during the high-load startup phase for about $40 to $80 in parts. What it actually is. Ordinary internal wear on a modern automatic, accelerated by heat and neglected fluid. Owner reports of complete failure requiring replacement around $5,000 are documented, though they are the tail of the distribution rather than the norm.

The cheap cause that gets skipped — and the free one first. Before any transmission diagnosis, rule out the shifter cable bushing under recall 22V-413. That campaign produces symptoms an owner reasonably describes as "transmission problems," and it is repaired free. Only after that does the paid path make sense: fluid condition first, then a control module or solenoid conversation at $300-$1,600, and only then internal work.

Where this does not apply. If the complaint is specifically that the selector position does not match what the transmission is doing, that is the recall, not this item, and it should not be quoted as a repair at all.

At the shop — say this: "First, has recall 22V-413 been checked and completed on this VIN? Second, what's the fluid condition, and what codes are stored in the transmission module? I want both on the estimate before we discuss internal work."

7 · Carbon buildup on intake valves — 60,000 to 120,000 miles

The tell. Gradual rough cold running, hesitation and mild power loss building over tens of thousands of miles rather than appearing suddenly. Sometimes misfire codes.

What it actually is. On direct injection, fuel sprays into the cylinder rather than past the intake valves, so the valves never get washed and oil vapour deposits build into carbon that disrupts airflow. This is a design consequence of the injection strategy, not a defect.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Plugs, again, and for the same reason as item 3. Then ask for a borescope inspection so the deposits can be photographed rather than assumed.

The Escape-specific warning. Because misfire symptoms here overlap with coolant intrusion, do not let a carbon-cleaning quote close the conversation. Confirm the coolant level is stable over a week before accepting carbon as the explanation. Treating item 3 as item 7 is the most expensive filing error available on this vehicle.

Where this does not apply. Port-injected engines wash their intake valves continuously and largely do not develop this.

At the shop — say this: "Before carbon cleaning, what's the plug condition, can you borescope the valves and show me the photos, and has the coolant level been confirmed stable? I want coolant intrusion ruled out before we blame carbon."

8 · Wheel bearings and suspension — 70,000 to 130,000 miles

The tell. A hum or drone from around 40-50 mph rising with road speed, and changing when you steer gently — that steering sensitivity names the side.

What it actually is. Rolling elements wear and the assembly develops play. It worsens steadily and can eventually affect wheel-speed sensor readings and trigger ABS warnings.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A worn or cupped tire produces nearly the same drone. Rotate and drive: if the noise moves, it is tires.

The free confirmation. With the vehicle safely supported, spin the wheel by hand listening for a gritty rumble, then rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock feeling for play. Ask to be shown.

Fix it yourself — the cheap half only. Sway bar end links, the usual actual cause of a clunk over bumps, are a genuine driveway job: $40-$90 in parts, two bolts per side, an hour. The honest limit: the hub bearing itself is not. The axle nut is torque-critical on a vehicle this heavy, the bolts are often seized solid on salted vehicles, and a hub fitted to the wrong torque fails early or damages the wheel-speed sensor you just paid for. Keep the links, hand over the hub.

Where this does not apply. If the hum does not change with steering input, look elsewhere — driveline and transmission noises also rise with road speed but are indifferent to steering.

At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I steer, so I think a bearing — but can we rotate the tires first, and show me the play by hand on the lift before ordering parts?"

Should you buy a used Ford Escape given how many recalls it has? Recall count is a misleading proxy for risk, and on this vehicle it misleads in the owner's favour. A safety recall means the defect is identified, the remedy is defined, the repair is performed free of charge, and completion is recorded against your VIN where anyone can verify it. What should worry a buyer is the opposite situation: a problem with no campaign, no free remedy and no paper trail. On the Escape that describes coolant intrusion on the 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost engines, which is why a history of unexplained coolant top-ups is a stronger reason to walk away from a specific vehicle than a list of open campaigns is. 9 · Air conditioning and electrical — 80,000 to 140,000 miles

The tell. Air that starts cold and fades warm after ten minutes, or never gets cold. Sometimes a clutch cycling rapidly, or no engagement click.

What it actually is. Refrigerant is not consumed, so a system that is low is a system that leaks. The condenser sits at the front and takes road debris, which is a legitimate alternative explanation worth checking.

The cheap causes. A failed relay gives no cold air with a healthy system. A blend door actuator produces a similar complaint from inside the dash. A leak found early is far cheaper than one that has run the system dry and damaged the compressor.

Where this does not apply. On hybrids the air-conditioning compressor may be electrically driven rather than belt-driven, which changes both the failure modes and the diagnostic path — do not assume a conventional compressor diagnosis applies.

At the shop — say this: "Was a leak test performed, and where exactly is it leaking? Can you check the relay before condemning the compressor, and is there impact damage on the condenser?"

10 · Catalytic converter — 120,000 miles and up

The tell. A steady check-engine light with P0420, often with no drivability symptom. Sometimes a faint sulphur smell. Frequently the first sign is failing an emissions inspection.

What it actually is. The computer compares the oxygen sensors before and after the converter; when their readings converge, the code sets. That does not say the converter is broken.

The cheap causes, all three. A lazy downstream sensor ($180-$350 installed). A small exhaust leak upstream. An unresolved misfire poisoning the substrate — and on an Escape that misfire may be item 3, which means the correct repair is well upstream of the converter.

The one demand that changes the conversation: Mode 6. Mode $06 reports the catalyst monitor's actual test result as a number against threshold. Ask for those values in writing before authorising anything. Our guide to expensive codes covers the pattern in full.

Where this does not apply. If a misfire code is present alongside P0420, resolve the misfire first — replacing a converter while the thing that poisoned it is still running is money spent twice.

At the shop — say this: "Before we replace the converter I want the Mode 6 catalyst values against threshold, the downstream sensor actually tested rather than assumed, and any misfire resolved first."

Two rows there invert the guide. A hybrid owner should ignore items 3 and 4 entirely — the EcoBoost coolant story is not theirs — and focus on item 5 and its three warning signs. And any owner with the shifter recall outstanding should treat that single line as more urgent than everything else here combined, because it is the only item on the list that can hurt somebody while the vehicle is parked.

Should you buy a used Escape? Which years are safe, and how to check in five minutes

Most people searching for Escape problems are deciding whether to buy one, so here it is directly — and on this vehicle the answer is more procedural than opinion-based.

The honest framing. The Escape's reputation is shaped by recall volume rather than by everyday running costs. Recalls are, counter-intuitively, good news for a used buyer: they are documented, the remedies are free, and completion is verifiable. What you are buying is not "a vehicle with no problems" but "a vehicle whose problems are named, numbered and fixable at no cost." The risk is not the campaign — it is the campaign that was never completed.

What genuinely carries risk. Coolant intrusion on 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost engines, because it is not a recall and has no free remedy. A history of unexplained coolant top-ups is the single strongest signal to walk away from a specific vehicle.

The five-minute pre-purchase procedure:

  • Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and note every open campaign. Open campaigns are not deal-breakers; they are free repairs you schedule after purchase.
  • Ask specifically whether 12V-431, 22V-413 and 22V-484 apply and whether they were completed. Completion is recorded against the VIN.
  • Check the coolant reservoir and ask about top-ups. Any history of adding coolant with no leak found is the answer to whether you buy this particular vehicle.
  • Cold start it yourself — not after the seller has warmed it up. The first ten seconds are where item 3 lives.
  • Get the codes read and specifically ask whether P0316 has ever been stored.
  • Test the shifter on a slope, carefully, with the brake ready.

The short version: an Escape with all campaigns completed and no coolant history is a normal used SUV. An Escape with outstanding campaigns and a coolant top-up habit is a different vehicle entirely, and the two can look identical in a listing.

What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 — the VIN question. "What open campaigns does this VIN show, and which have been completed?" On this vehicle it is the first sentence, and it is free.

Checkpoint 2 — the coolant question. "Has the coolant level been recorded, and can we re-check it in a week?" This is the Escape-specific checkpoint that separates cheap from catastrophic.

Checkpoint 3 — the write-up. "Can you read back the complaint as written?" "Rough for ten seconds on cold start only" produces a different diagnosis from "runs rough."

Checkpoint 4 — the diagnostic fee. "What's the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer, usually credited.

Checkpoint 5 — the software question. "Is the PCM on current calibration per TSB 20-2100 and 19B37?" Software before parts.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Escape owners the most

Trap 1: the intermittent misfire that becomes an engine. The situation: rough running for ten seconds on cold start, clearing afterward, code P0316 on a 2017 Escape at 82,000 miles. What the shop says: "It clears itself, it's minor. Keep an eye on it." What is really happening: on this engine that code has a benign cause and a catastrophic one, and only tracking the coolant level separates them. NHTSA complaint records document exactly this progression from a plug diagnosis to coolant intrusion and engine failure. Price versus bill: $40-$80 in plugs plus a free coolant check, against quotes exceeding $8,000. Your protective question: "Can we record the coolant level today and re-check it in a week, alongside replacing the plugs?"

Trap 2: the free recall quoted as a repair. The situation: an Escape behaving as though it is in neutral, or a shifter that does not match the transmission. What the shop says: "Transmission problems. We'll need to diagnose, could be significant." What is really happening: NHTSA 22V-413 covers a shifter cable bushing producing exactly that complaint, and the remedy is performed free of charge. Price versus bill: $0 against a transmission diagnosis and possible repair. Your protective question: "Has recall 22V-413 been checked and completed on this VIN?"

Trap 3: carbon cleaning that hides a coolant problem. The situation: rough cold running on a direct-injection Escape at 95,000 miles. What the shop says: "Carbon on the intake valves. Walnut blasting, $650." What is really happening: carbon is a real item on this engine and the quote may be legitimate — but rough cold running is also the coolant intrusion signature, and paying $650 to clean valves does not address a cylinder filling with coolant overnight. Price versus bill: $650 spent correctly, or $650 spent while the actual problem continues toward $8,000. Your protective question: "Before we clean carbon, can you confirm the coolant level is stable over a week and that there's no internal loss?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.

Scenario 1 — the $60 repair and the $8,000 repair sharing one code. A 1.5-litre Escape at 82,000 miles logging P0316 with a ten-second rough cold start. Plugs, a PCM calibration check and a coolant level recorded today with a re-check in a week costs under $150 all in. The same symptom left as "intermittent" is the documented path toward coolant in a cylinder and an engine quote in five figures. Lesson: the code does not tell you which one you have. Tracking the coolant level over seven days does, and it is free.

Scenario 2 — the transmission diagnosis that is a recall. An Escape behaving as though it slips into neutral, quoted for transmission diagnosis. Recall 22V-413 covers a shifter cable bushing that produces that exact description, with a free remedy. Lesson: on this vehicle, "check the campaigns" belongs before "check the transmission," and it costs nothing to ask.

Scenario 3 — the correct repair at the wrong time. Carbon cleaning quoted at $650 for rough cold running on a direct-injection engine at 95,000 miles. Carbon is genuinely a maintenance item on these engines and the work may well be due — but performed while a cylinder is taking on coolant overnight, it treats a real problem that is not the problem. Lesson: a legitimate repair can still be the wrong next step. Sequence matters more than accuracy here.

How can you tell a real Escape failure from an unnecessary repair quote? Two checks cover most of it, and both are free. "Coolant is disappearing with no puddle." Stop driving it. Internal coolant loss on this vehicle does not improve with time, and the next cold start is where the damage accumulates. Cooling system pressure test before anything else.

"Unexpected noise, reduced power or smoke on a hybrid." Park and shut off the engine as soon as it is safe. That is Ford's own instruction under 22V-484, not our caution.

"Nothing's wrong, I just bought it." Run the VIN lookup today and schedule any open campaigns. Write the coolant level on a note in the glovebox with the date. Set a plug interval reminder. That is the entire preventive programme, and it costs almost nothing.

After the repair: verify, then prevent

Verify within a week. Misfire: two full cold starts with no rough running and no returning code, plus the coolant level unchanged. Recall work: get the completion documented against the VIN in writing. Bearing: the hum gone at the speed where it lived. Converter: light stays off through two drive cycles and readiness monitors set.

Re-check coolant at seven days, then thirty. On this vehicle a single reading proves nothing. A stable level across a month is what closes item 3.

Record the before and after. Thirty seconds from the same position at cold start is the cheapest proof of repair that exists here, because cold start is where the symptom lives. The recording guide has the protocol.

Prevent the next one. Spark plugs on schedule rather than on symptoms. Coolant level checked monthly, written down. An annual VIN recall lookup, because campaigns are issued after you buy the vehicle, not only before.
