🚨 60-Second TriageSteering suddenly heavy while driving on a 2010-2012: loss of electric assist. The car still steers, with effort — pull over, and do not drive it again until recall 15V-340 has been checked by VIN. Brake pedal travel growing, brake fluid light on, 2013-2018: recall 23V-162 — stop and have it towed; a jounce hose leak is progressive. A car does not break at random. It breaks on a schedule, and on a Ford Fusion the schedule is unusually well documented — because so much of it was written down by Ford and by NHTSA.

Ford built the last Fusion on July 31, 2020. Every Fusion is now a used car. Five of the ten problems below carry an NHTSA campaign number with a free remedy that survives the discontinuation. One — the expensive one — had a Ford programme that closed in November 2022, and the difference between those two situations is the whole point of this guide.

By the end you will know which of the ten is due at your mileage, what each costs in 2026, which claims rest on a document you can pull yourself, and the cheap cause that gets skipped when the expensive one is quoted first.

How to use this guide

Run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup first. Then find your generation, your engine and your mileage. Every entry has the same parts: the tell, what it actually is, the 2026 price, the cheap cause that gets skipped, and where this does not apply. Two entries include a do-it-yourself path with honest limits. Every entry ends with the exact sentence to say at the counter.

One rule overrides everything: the mileage in each heading is when the part starts talking, not when it fails. A shifter bushing gives you a lever-dash mismatch before a rollaway. A brake hose gives you a longer pedal before no pedal. A cylinder taking on coolant gives you a rough cold start for weeks before an engine bill. Treat the windows as listening windows and most of this guide stays in the free rows of the price ladder.

First: which Fusion do you actually have?

2006-2009, hydraulic steering. Mazda-derived platform, a pump-driven rack. Almost none of the campaign items apply; your steering story is a pump at $442-$531.

2010-2012, electric steering. The TRW electric assist NHTSA investigated under PE14-030. The 2011-2012 cars are covered by recall 15V-340; the 2010 is not, and that decides item 5.

2013-2016 with the 2.5 Duratec. The shifter bushing, brake hose, steering bolt and door latch recalls. The engine is the calm one — its usual complaint is a valve cover gasket at $245-$334.

2013 with the 1.6 EcoBoost. Overheating recall 13V-584. Later 1.6 cars sit inside the pending Miller class action but have no programme.

2014-2020 with the 1.5 EcoBoost. The coolant intrusion generation. Programme 19B37 and the closed programme 21N12 name 2017-2019 builds; the technical bulletin reaches further back, to "2014-2019 Fusion vehicles built on or before 10-Jun-2019" in its current version, 19-2375. Item 3 is yours.

2017-2019 with the 2.0 EcoBoost. Same mechanism, different bulletin: TSB 19-2346 names "2017-2019 Fusion/MKZ built on or before 8-Apr-2019" and repairs it with a long block. A 2013-2016 2.0 is outside that bulletin. Either way, a timing chain tensioner runs $911-$1,247 on neglected cars.

2013-2020 Hybrid and Energi. HF35 eCVT, no shifter cable, no 6F35. The hybrid inverts three items on this list, and the table at the end says which.

The 6-minute check that dates your Fusion better than the odometer

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and write down every open campaign. Five items here are free if the VIN says so.
  2. On a 2013-2016, in Park with your foot on the brake, compare the lever with the gear on the dash. Any mismatch is item 1 — recall 22V-413.
  3. Press the brake pedal hard for ten seconds and watch whether it creeps, then look at the fluid level. Low or creeping on a 2013-2018 is item 2, recall 23V-162.
  4. Check the coolant reservoir and write the level on a note with today's date. Falling over weeks with nothing on the driveway is item 3.
  5. Cold-start it and listen to the first ten seconds; on a 2010-2012 also turn the wheel lock to lock. A stumble that clears warm is item 3. A wheel that goes heavy is item 5.
  6. Get codes read free at a parts store. P0316 is item 3. A wrench light is item 4. P0420 is item 10. P0455 is item 9.

What actually determines your number

Whether a campaign covers it. Five items carry NHTSA numbers. Recall remedies are performed free of charge, and this is the largest single cost variable on the vehicle.

Which year you have, to the month. The steering recall covers cars built from September 7, 2010; the brake hose recall covers hoses fitted to July 19, 2017. The build date matters as much as the model year.

Whether the programme is still open. 19B37 and 21N12 expired on November 30, 2022. Knowing it in advance changes what you do about a P0316.

Which engine. The 2.5 Duratec has the calmest record. The 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBoost carry the coolant story. The hybrid has its own list.

Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labour-heavy work, but recall work can only be performed at a Ford dealer. The full comparison maps which jobs go where.

What the car is worth. Kelley Blue Book puts a 2013 around $4,700 and a 2020 around $10,600. A $4,700-$6,856 transmission is a sell-or-fix question on both.

The ten problems, in the order they arrive

1 · Shifter cable bushing — 20,000 to 80,000 miles

The tell. The lever says one thing and the dash says another. Owners describe "shifter mismatch," a car that will not start because it does not believe it is in Park — and the serious version, a car that rolls after the driver has walked away.

What it actually is. A plastic bushing joins the shifter cable to the lever on the 6F35 transmission. Ford's 2019 report describes a supplier grease that "was not compatible with the bushing material and causes deterioration of the bushing over time." When it lets go, the cable detaches and the transmission stays wherever it was.

The cheap cause that gets skipped — and it is free. The recall itself. 22V-413 is the 2022 expansion; cars fixed under the earlier 19V-362 still get the protective cap. Nobody should be paying for a shift cable on a 2013-2016 Fusion.

The confirmation test, thirty seconds. Level ground, engine running, foot on the brake. Move the lever through every position and watch the dash — every position should match. Then release the brake in Park with the parking brake off. Any creep is a tow to the dealer, not a drive.

Where this does not apply. Hybrids have no cable-operated 6F35. 2017-2020 cars are outside both campaigns. The Escape guide covers the same bushing on the SUV, where the campaign runs to 2019.

At the shop — say this: "Please check my VIN against recall 22V-413, Ford 22S43, and the earlier 19V-362, for the shifter cable bushing. If either is open I want the bushing and protective cap done and the completion recorded against the VIN."

2 · Front brake hoses — 30,000 to 90,000 miles

The tell. Brake pedal travel that has grown. A brake fluid warning light.

What it actually is. The flexible hose to each front caliper has a braided reinforcement that fatigues as the wheel steers and moves. The filing admits that "only 88% of suspension articulation was utilized on the brake hose test rig during life testing." The remedy is both front hoses with a revised braid, plus a bleed, at no charge.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The recall, first. Then the two ordinary causes of a soft pedal: old fluid that has absorbed moisture, and air in the system after a careless pad job.

The confirmation test. Fluid against the MAX line, then a hard, steady press for ten seconds: a pedal that sinks under constant pressure is a leak, and on a 2013-2018 non-hybrid Fusion the front hoses come first. Our brake light guide separates the fluid light from the ABS light.

Where this does not apply. Hybrids and Energis are outside 23V-162. The hoses were fitted to July 19, 2017, which is why only 38 model-year-2018 cars are in scope; any 2019-2020 has the revised part. The 2006-2012 cars are not part of this story.

At the shop — say this: "Please check my VIN against recall 23V-162, Ford 23S12, for the front brake jounce hoses. If it's open I want both hoses and the bleed done under the campaign before anyone quotes me pads."

3 · Startup misfire, P0316 and coolant intrusion — 40,000 to 100,000 miles (1.5 and 2.0 EcoBoost)

The tell. A stumble in the first seconds after a cold start that clears as the engine warms, with P0316 stored. A puff of white smoke on that first start. A reservoir that needs topping up every few weeks with nothing on the driveway.

What it actually is — two possibilities with the same code. The benign one: the 1.5 EcoBoost is sensitive to spark plug gap growth, and a worn plug misfires under the high-load first seconds of a cold start. The serious one: coolant seeps into a cylinder bore while the car sits. Left alone, the 19B37 letter says, "this condition may damage the engine, requiring replacement of the engine short block."

What Ford's programmes did, and when they stopped. 19B37 reprogrammed the PCM to run the coolant pump after shutdown. 21N12 provided "a no-cost, one-time repair (if needed) to the 1.5L short block... for 7 years of service or 84,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first"; for a car already past either limit, the free repair "will last through November 30, 2022." That window is closed, and a 2017 Fusion in 2026 is outside it on time alone. Miller et al. v. Ford, 2:20-cv-01796 in the Eastern District of California, covers 2013-2019 Fusions with 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 EcoBoost engines; it is pending, with no settlement and no claim form.

The cheap cause that gets skipped — and the order that matters. Replace all four spark plugs first: $174-$221 installed at RepairPal rates. Then confirm the PCM is on the 19B37 calibration — a dealer can still flash it for a labour charge. Then, and this is the step nobody demands, have the coolant level recorded and re-checked in a week. Plugs that fix it are a happy ending; plugs that fix it for three weeks are a warning.

The confirmation test, and it is the one Ford used. A cooling system pressure test held overnight, then a borescope through the spark plug holes; an independent can do it for a $61-$90 diagnosis plus borescope time. If a specific cylinder is named, swap that coil with a neighbour first: if the misfire follows the coil, it is the coil at $119-$186. White smoke on cold start that smells sweet is coolant; that guide separates it from condensation.

Fix it yourself — the plugs, not the diagnosis. Four plugs sit under a plastic cover: coils out, gapped plugs in, an hour with a torque wrench. The honest limit: the head is aluminium, and a cross-threaded or over-torqued plug turns a $60 job into a helicoil. If plugs do not cure it, stop buying parts — the next step is a pressure test.

Where this does not apply. The 2.5 Duratec is port-injected, has no turbo and no coolant intrusion history — a P0316 on a 2.5 is plugs or a coil until proven otherwise. The hybrid's 2.0 Atkinson engine is not the 2.0 EcoBoost. The 2013 1.6 EcoBoost has an older story: recall 13V-584 under Ford 13S12, where an overheating cylinder head "may crack, causing an oil leak that may result in a fire." On a 2013 1.6, that completion is the first question.

At the shop — say this: "P0316 on this engine can be plugs or coolant intrusion. I want the plugs replaced, the PCM checked against 19B37, and the coolant level recorded today so we re-check it in a week. If it drops, I want the overnight pressure test and a borescope before anyone quotes an engine."

Why does one misfire code on a Ford Fusion range from $174 to an engine? Because P0316, a startup misfire, has two different causes on the 1.5-litre EcoBoost and the code cannot tell them apart. The cheap cause is spark plug gap growth: this engine is sensitive to it, and a worn plug misfires under the high-load first seconds of a cold start. The expensive cause is coolant seeping into a cylinder bore while the car sits, which Ford's own programme letters describe as coolant loss, excessive tailpipe smoke and a misfire warning light, and which "may damage the engine, requiring replacement of the engine short block." The free short block under programme 21N12 required 7 years or 84,000 miles, and its window for out-of-term cars closed on November 30, 2022. The separator is not the code, it is the coolant level tracked over a week. Pulscar's free sound check reads that first cold start, where both causes reveal themselves.

4 · 6F35 harsh shifting, shudder and failure — 50,000 to 120,000 miles

The tell. A hard 1-2 or 2-3 shift when warm. A shudder under light throttle around 35-45 mph, like rumble strips. Delayed engagement into Drive. In the worst cases, slipping and a wrench light.

What it actually is. The 6F35 is Ford's six-speed automatic in every non-hybrid Fusion from 2010. RepairPal's summary is the useful one: on lower-mileage cars, "upgrading the software in the powertrain control module (PCM) and the transmission control module (TCM) may correct the problem," while as mileage rises "internal transmission damage can occur." The 35-45 mph shudder is the torque converter clutch failing to lock smoothly. The lawsuits are worth knowing so nobody sells you hope: Gant v. Ford, filed October 2, 2021 over 2010-2017 Fusions, and Jones v. Ford, a related mass action severed and dismissed on December 24, 2024. Neither produced a settlement or a recall.

The cheap cause that gets skipped — and the free one first. Before any transmission diagnosis on a 2013-2016, rule out the shifter cable bushing under recall 22V-413. It produces exactly the symptoms an owner calls "transmission problems," and it is repaired free. Then the paid path: a TCM scan, a calibration update, and a fluid service at $602-$682 for a 2012-2019 car at RepairPal rates.

The confirmation test. A road test with the scan tool logging torque converter clutch slip. A shudder that disappears after a fluid change and an adaptive reset was fluid; one that survives them is hardware. Where this does not apply. Hybrids and Energis have the HF35 eCVT — their story is a transfer shaft and side bearing noise on 2013-2016 cars built on or before 15 August 2015, covered by TSB 19-2391 under the normal warranty rather than by any extension. If the selector position does not match what the car does, that is item 1, not a repair.

At the shop — say this: "First, has recall 22V-413 been checked and completed on this VIN? Second, what codes are in the TCM, is the calibration current, and what's the fluid condition? I want a fluid service and adaptive reset on the estimate before we discuss a valve body or a converter."

5 · Electric power steering loss of assist — 60,000 to 130,000 miles (2010-2016)

The tell. The wheel goes heavy without warning — at a junction, mid-corner, on the highway — and a "Power steering assist fault" message appears. NHTSA's summary: the assist "can suddenly fail while driving, resulting in increased steering effort."

What it actually is. The 2010-2012 Fusion uses a rack-mounted electric assist unit built by TRW. Ford's defect report blames "conformal coat contamination and ribbon cable pin misalignment within the steering gear motor." The 2013-2016 cars have a different weakness in salt states: the motor's mounting bolts corrode, and "the steering gear motor may detach from the gear housing."

The cheap cause that gets skipped — and it is the code list. Recall 15V-340 has two remedies, and which one you get depends on the codes stored in the steering module. Everyone gets a PSCM software update. But if one of fifteen listed codes is present — C1B00-62, C200B-2F, C200B-61, C200B-62, C200C-2F, C200D-49, U0300-00, U2011-49, U2011-61, U3000-46, U3000-49, U3000-61, U3000-72, U3000-96, or P07AE-09 — "the dealer will replace the EPAS system at no charge to the owner." So the cheap step is to have the PSCM codes printed before anyone clears them. Clearing them to "see if it comes back" can clear your free rack.

The confirmation test. Assist that fails and returns with a restart is electrical. On a 2013-2016 in a salt state, ask to see the motor bolts on the lift; corroded or missing bolts are recall 15V-250 or 19V-632. Where this does not apply. The 2010 deserves plain words: NHTSA's investigation covered 2010-2012 cars, but Ford's recall covers cars built from September 7, 2010 — the 2011 model year onwards. A 2010 owner with a failed rack has the CarComplaints averages — $1,610 to $1,800 around 105,000 miles — and no campaign. The salt-state bolt recalls name twenty states plus DC; a 2014 from Arizona is not in them.

At the shop — say this: "Before anything is cleared, please pull and print the PSCM codes. Then check my VIN against recall 15V-340, Ford 15S18 — if any of the listed codes is stored, the recall replaces the steering gear at no charge. On a 2013-2016, also check 15V-250 and 19V-632 for the motor bolts."

6 · Door latch pawl spring — 40,000 to 120,000 miles (2013-2016, hot climates first)

The tell. A door that bounces back open when you shut it. A door-ajar light that stays on, interior lights that never go off, a battery flat after a weekend. Hot states see it first, because the latch bakes in the sun.

What it actually is. Inside each latch a small spring tab holds the pawl. Ford's 2015 announcement says the latch "may experience a broken pawl spring tab, which typically results in a condition where the door will not latch," and the 2023 owner letter adds that a door latched "after repeated attempts" may "unlatch while driving." The remedy is all four latches.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The recall, and then the refund. Ford's 20S15 letter says owners who paid for a latch repair "may be eligible for a refund of previously paid repairs" with the original receipt — if your car's history has a door latch invoice, that receipt is money.

The confirmation test. Shut each door normally, once, from outside. Any door that needs a second try is the recall until proven otherwise.

Where this does not apply. 15V-246 covers 2013-2014 Fusions built between July 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013; 23V-775 covers certain 2014-2016 builds, and the December 2023 letter names the 2016. A car outside those ranges, or any 2017-2020, is a paid job — RepairPal's $366-$484 actuator estimate is the honest number.

At the shop — say this: "Please check my VIN against recalls 15V-246, Ford 15S16, and 23V-775, Ford 20S15, for the door latch pawl spring. If either is open I want all four latches inspected and replaced under the campaign, and I have a receipt for a latch I paid for previously."

7 · Sway bar links, struts and the creak over bumps — 70,000 to 130,000 miles

The tell. A clunk or rattle from one front corner over small bumps, worst at low speed on broken pavement. A creak when the body rolls into a driveway.

What it actually is. The sway bar end links tie the anti-roll bar to the struts; their ball joints wear and every bump rattles them. Stabilizer bushings dry out and creak. Struts wear more slowly and announce themselves with control rather than noise.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The links, always, at $100-$159 a pair. Then the bushings, then a loose heat shield — the noise that cost me $380 to learn about — and only then struts.

The confirmation test. Car on the ground, wheel straight, grab the end link by hand and try to move it: any click or play is the answer. For struts, look for oil weeping down the body.

Fix it yourself — the links, not the struts. End links are a genuine driveway job: two nuts per side, a Torx bit to hold the stud, an hour on stands. The honest limit: a strut carries a coil spring under tension, and a spring compressor that slips can break a hand or worse. Do the links; buy the struts as a job. Where this does not apply. A clunk only on braking is the pads shifting in the caliper bracket. A clunk with a pull to one side is a control arm bushing, a different price ladder.

At the shop — say this: "Before we talk struts, can you show me play in the sway bar end links and the stabilizer bushings on the lift? If the links have play, I'd like those done first and the noise re-checked before anything else is ordered."

Should you buy a used Ford Fusion now that Ford no longer builds it? The discontinuation changes the arithmetic in two directions and the same VIN lookup answers both. Against: parts for a dead model do not get cheaper, dealers see fewer of them each year, and Kelley Blue Book already values a 2013 around $4,700 and a 2020 around $10,600, so any four-figure repair is a large fraction of the car. For: the recall remedies do not expire with the model — the shifter bushing under 22V-413, the brake hoses under 23V-162, the steering campaigns and the door latches are still free at a Ford dealer against a VIN that qualifies, and completion is recorded where a buyer can verify it. What did expire is programme 21N12, so a 1.5 EcoBoost with any coolant history is the one Fusion to walk away from. Pulscar reads the cold start where that history shows itself.

The tell. A hum from around 40-50 mph that rises with road speed and changes when you steer gently. That steering sensitivity names the side.

What it actually is. The hub bearing's rolling elements wear, the assembly develops play, and it drones. It can eventually confuse the wheel-speed sensor built into the hub and trigger an ABS warning.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A worn or cupped tyre produces nearly the same drone. Rotate front to rear and drive: if the noise moves, it is tyres. RepairPal's price is mostly labour — $44-$76 for the bearing, $308-$451 to fit it — so a wrong guess buys labour twice.

The free confirmation. With the car safely supported, spin the wheel by hand and listen for a gritty rumble, then rock it at twelve and six o'clock feeling for play. Ask to be shown.

Where this does not apply. If the hum does not change with steering input, look elsewhere — a failing 6F35 converter also drones with road speed. On the hybrid, a whine that follows the electric motor rather than road speed is the HF35.

At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I steer, so I think a bearing — but can we rotate the tyres first, and show me the play by hand on the lift before ordering parts?"

The tell. A steady check-engine light with no drivability change. P0455 (large leak), P0456 (small leak) or P0446 (vent circuit). Sometimes a rough idle right after a fill-up, which points at a purge valve stuck open.

What it actually is. The evaporative system stores fuel vapour in a charcoal canister and meters it into the engine through a purge valve. The computer seals the system and watches pressure; any leak fails the test.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The gas cap, replaced rather than "checked," for less than $20. Then the purge valve, testable in the driveway: unplug it and try to blow through it — if air passes with no power applied, it is stuck open. Only after those does a $478-$581 canister deserve a conversation.

The confirmation test. A smoke test: $60-$120 at an independent, and the only way to replace one part instead of three. Check engine light on explains why an EVAP light can be driven on for a week while a flashing one cannot.

Where this does not apply. A P0455 the day after a fill-up that clears itself is a loose cap and nothing else. On the Energi plug-in, the pressurised fuel tank changes the diagnostic path. And Ford's purge valve recall 18V-735 covers the 2012-2018 Focus only.

At the shop — say this: "Before we replace the canister, I want a smoke test with the leak located, the purge valve bench-tested, and the gas cap replaced. One part, then re-test, then the next — not all three at once."

The tell. A steady check-engine light with P0420, often with no drivability symptom. Sometimes a faint sulphur smell. Frequently the first sign is failing an emissions inspection.

What it actually is. The computer compares the oxygen sensors before and after the converter; when their readings converge, the code sets. That says the converter is not storing oxygen properly. It does not say why.

The cheap cause that gets skipped — all three of them. The downstream sensor at $317-$368. A small exhaust leak at a flange, which fools the sensor. And an unresolved misfire — which on a 1.5 EcoBoost may be item 3, in which case a new converter would be poisoned the same way within months.

The one demand that changes the conversation: Mode 6. Mode $06 reports the catalyst monitor's actual result as a number against a threshold. Ask for those values in writing before authorising anything. Our guide to the most expensive codes covers the pattern.

Where this does not apply. If a misfire code is present alongside P0420, resolve the misfire first — replacing a converter while the thing that poisoned it is still running is money spent twice. A Fusion Hybrid runs its engine intermittently and may leave the catalyst monitor incomplete; "not ready" is not "failed."

At the shop — say this: "Before we replace the converter I want the Mode 6 catalyst values against threshold, the downstream sensor actually tested rather than assumed, an exhaust leak check, and any misfire resolved first."

The first four lines are free, and between them they decide three of the four lines at the bottom: the PSCM codes decide whether the rack is $0 or $2,985, the shifter check decides whether the transmission conversation starts at all, and the coolant note decides whether the engine line is ever reached.

Two rows there invert the guide. A hybrid owner should ignore items 1, 2 and 4 entirely and budget for the HF35 and the battery instead. And a 2010 owner should read item 5 as the whole guide, because the investigation that produced everyone else's free rack stopped one model year short of theirs.

Should you buy a used Fusion? Best and worst years, and the discontinuation question

Most people searching for Fusion problems are deciding whether to buy one, and on this car the answer has a date attached.

The honest framing. Six years after the last one was built, the Fusion's problems are settled history, and five of the ten have a free remedy a dealer is still obliged to perform against a qualifying VIN. What the discontinuation takes away is the future — no further programmes, a thinning parts pipeline, and resale Kelley Blue Book puts at $4,700 for a 2013 and $10,600 for a 2020. RepairPal's 4.0-out-of-5 rating, 18th of 24 midsize cars at $581 a year, describes a 2.5-litre car with the campaigns done — not a 1.5 EcoBoost with a coolant habit.

Years to prefer. A 2018-2020 with the 2.5 has the calmest record: outside the shifter and door latch campaigns, brake hoses revised from the factory, no EcoBoost coolant exposure. A 2013-2016 2.5 with every campaign documented is the value buy — the car that scares people on recall count is the car whose problems have been fixed for free.

Years to avoid, and why. The 2010 with electric steering, because the failure NHTSA investigated has no free remedy on that year. Any 2014-2019 1.5 EcoBoost with a coolant top-up in its history, because 21N12 is closed and Miller v. Ford is pending with nothing to claim. A 2013 1.6 EcoBoost without the 13V-584 completion.

The five-minute pre-purchase procedure:

  • Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and note every open campaign — free repairs you schedule after purchase, not deal-breakers.
  • Ask specifically about 22V-413, 23V-162, 15V-340 or 15V-250 depending on year, and the door latch campaigns. Completion is recorded against the VIN.
  • On a 1.5 or 2.0 EcoBoost, ask about coolant top-ups and look at the reservoir. Adding coolant with no leak found is the answer to whether you buy this particular car.
  • Cold start it yourself — not after the seller has warmed it up.
  • Sit at idle in Park on a slight slope with your foot off the brake, carefully. Any movement is item 1.

The short version: a Fusion with all campaigns completed and no coolant history is a normal used sedan. One with outstanding campaigns and a coolant top-up habit is a different vehicle, and the two can look identical in a listing.

What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 — the VIN question. "What open campaigns does this VIN show, and which have been completed?" On this car it is the first sentence, and it is free.

Checkpoint 2 — the codes question. "Can you print the stored codes before anything is cleared — including the steering module and the transmission module?" On a 2011-2012, the PSCM list decides whether recall 15V-340 gives you a free steering gear.

Checkpoint 3 — the coolant question. "Has the coolant level been recorded, and can we re-check it in a week?" The EcoBoost-specific checkpoint that separates cheap from catastrophic.

Checkpoint 4 — the diagnostic fee. "What's the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer. What a diagnostic should cost has the breakdown.

Checkpoint 5 — the software question. "Is the PCM and TCM calibration current?" Software before parts.

Checkpoint 6 — the authorisation ceiling. "Call me before anything over this figure." The dispute guide covers what to do when that gets ignored, and signs you're being overcharged lists the patterns.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Fusion owners the most

Trap 1: the free recall quoted as a transmission repair. The situation: a 2014 Fusion 2.5 at 68,000 miles that "acts like it's in neutral" and once rolled after being parked. What the shop says: "Transmission problems. We'll need to diagnose, could be significant." What is really happening: NHTSA 22V-413 covers a shifter cable bushing that produces exactly that complaint, and the remedy is free. Price versus bill: $0 against a transmission diagnosis and whatever follows it. Your protective question: "Has recall 22V-413 been checked and completed on this VIN?"

Trap 2: the intermittent misfire that becomes an engine. The situation: rough running for ten seconds on cold start, clearing afterward, code P0316 on a 2017 Fusion 1.5 at 88,000 miles. What the shop says: "It clears itself, it's minor. Keep an eye on it." What is really happening: that code has a benign cause and a catastrophic one, and only tracking the coolant level separates them. Price versus bill: $174-$221 in plugs plus a free coolant check, against a CarComplaints average of $3,390 for the engine. Your protective question: "Can we record the coolant level today and re-check it in a week, alongside replacing the plugs?"

Trap 3: the steering codes cleared before the recall. The situation: a 2012 Fusion whose steering went heavy twice on the highway, now at a shop that "reset it and it's fine." What the shop says: "No fault present now. Come back if it happens again." What is really happening: recall 15V-340 replaces the steering gear at no charge if one of fifteen listed codes is stored. Clearing them can erase the evidence. Price versus bill: $0 under the recall, against $1,580 as a CarComplaints average or $2,774-$2,985 at RepairPal rates. Your protective question: "Before anything is cleared, can you print the PSCM codes and check them against recall 15V-340?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.

Scenario 1 — the $0 rack and the $2,985 rack sharing one symptom. A 2011 Fusion at 92,000 miles with intermittent loss of assist. Ask for the PSCM codes to be printed, then for recall 15V-340 to be checked: with a listed code stored, the steering gear is replaced at no charge. Let the codes be cleared first and the same car is quoted a rack at $2,774-$2,985. Lesson: on this car the diagnostic printout is the warranty. Ask for it before you ask for anything else.

Scenario 2 — the $174 repair and the $3,390 repair sharing one code. A 2017 Fusion 1.5 at 88,000 miles logging P0316 with a ten-second rough cold start. Plugs, a calibration check and a coolant level recorded today costs under $300 all in. The same symptom left as "intermittent" is the documented path toward coolant in a cylinder, with programme 21N12 closed. Lesson: the code does not tell you which one you have. Tracking the coolant level over seven days does, and it is free.

Scenario 3 — the transmission diagnosis that is a recall. A 2015 Fusion 2.5 at 61,000 miles that will not start until the lever is jiggled. Ask for recall 22V-413 to be checked and the bushing and cap are fitted free. Skip that question and the same car is booked for a transmission diagnosis at $120-$200. Lesson: on this car, "check the campaigns" belongs before "check the transmission," and it costs nothing to ask.

How can you tell a real Fusion failure from an unnecessary repair quote? Three checks cover most of it, and all three are free. First, the campaign check: five items in this guide carry NHTSA numbers, remedies under a safety recall are performed at no charge, and completion is recorded against your VIN — so a symptom matching a campaign should never reach a paid estimate before that lookup happens. Second, the printout check, specific to this car: on a 2011-2012 the steering module's stored codes decide whether recall 15V-340 gives you a free rack, so nothing gets cleared until it has been printed. Third, the coolant check: record the level today, re-check in a week, and treat any loss without an external leak as urgent. Beyond those, ordinary discipline applies: a coil swap before deeper misfire work, a tyre rotation before a bearing, Mode 6 before a converter. Your situation right now: four playbooks

"P0316 or a rough cold start on an EcoBoost." This week, not eventually. Plugs, calibration, and a coolant level recorded with a re-check scheduled. If the level drops, an overnight pressure test and a borescope before anyone says the word engine.

"The steering went heavy." Do not let anyone clear codes. On a 2011-2012, the PSCM printout plus recall 15V-340 is the whole conversation. On a 2013-2016 in a salt state, the motor bolts under 15V-250 and 19V-632.

"Something is wrong with the shifter, or the brakes feel long." Both are safety recalls. Book the dealer today, leave the parking brake on, and if the brake fluid is low, tow it rather than drive it.

"Nothing's wrong, I just bought it." Run the VIN lookup today and schedule any open campaigns. Write the coolant level on a note in the glovebox with the date. Book a 6F35 fluid service if there is no record of one. Most of that is free.

After the repair: verify, then prevent

Verify within a week. Misfire: two full cold starts with no rough running and no returning code, plus the coolant level unchanged. Recall work: the completion documented against the VIN. Transmission: the shudder gone at the speed where it lived. Converter: light off through two drive cycles.

Re-check coolant at seven days, then thirty. On an EcoBoost a single reading proves nothing.

Record the before and after. Thirty seconds from the same position at cold start is the cheapest proof of repair that exists here, because cold start is where the symptom lives. The recording guide has the protocol.

Prevent the next one. Spark plugs on schedule rather than on symptoms. Coolant level checked monthly, written down. 6F35 fluid every 60,000 miles. An annual VIN recall lookup — 23V-162 arrived in 2023 for cars built as early as 2012.

Your action plan: 10 minutes, today, this week

Next 10 minutes — free:

  1. Run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and note every open and completed campaign.
  2. Check the coolant reservoir, write the level and today's date on a note in the glovebox.
  3. On a 2013-2016, do the shifter-versus-dash check on level ground with your foot on the brake.

Today:

  1. If any campaign is open, book it at a Ford dealer. Remedies under safety recalls are free.
  2. If there is a rough cold start, record thirty seconds of the first cold start properly and run it through a free sound check.
  3. If you have a quote, run it against the cheap-cause paragraph for that item and use the script.

This week:

  1. Book spark plugs if there is no record within the interval — on a 1.5 EcoBoost they are misfire insurance.
  2. Re-check the coolant level against your note. Unchanged is the answer you want.
  3. Bank a baseline recording of the first cold start while the car is healthy, so any future change is a comparison.
