🚨 60-Second TriageOil pressure warning light on a 2015-2018 car with the 1.0L engine: stop driving and get it towed — item 4, and NHTSA's own analysis says this failure can seize an engine with little warning. Engine stalls while driving: item 3, and there are two open recalls and a 15-year program on that valve. A door that will not stay latched: item 5, and it has been recalled twice. Shudder pulling away from a stop: item 1 — annoying rather than dangerous, and the coverage for it has closed, so get a second quote. "Steering assist fault" message on a 2012-2014 car: item 6, and it is a cluster with no campaign behind it. Everything else here: you have time.

The Ford Focus is the clearest example in this series of a car whose reputation and whose current risks are two different things.

We pulled every Ford Focus complaint in NHTSA's public Office of Defects Investigation file received between 1 January 2015 and 8 September 2026 — 12,087 of them. The Power Train component family accounts for 5,480, or 45.3%: the DPS6 PowerShift dry dual-clutch, exactly as the reputation says. Nothing in this dataset contradicts what owners have been saying about that transmission for a decade.

But every route that used to pay for it has closed. The Vargas class settlement received final approval on 5 March 2020 and its claim deadlines passed later that year. Ford's own programs — 14M01, 14M02, 19N07 and 19N08 — have each run out, the last of them in November 2025. A page that tells you to go and ask for the transmission extension is sending you to a counter that will say no.

Meanwhile, five separate Ford actions on this car are live right now, and four of them were issued or mailed in 2026: a canister purge valve program that runs fifteen years with no mileage limit, an emissions recall on the 1.0L, a stalling recall whose letters went out on 29 July 2026, a clutch recall whose interim letters went out on 5 August 2026, and an NHTSA engineering analysis into 1.0L timing belts opened on 31 July 2026 and still open.

By the end of this guide you will know which of the ten failures is due at your mileage, what each costs in 2026, which coverage is genuinely open, and the cheap cause that gets skipped when the expensive one is quoted first.

How to use this guide

Find your transmission and your engine first. On this car those two facts split the whole guide: a DPS6 automatic and a 1.0L three-cylinder have almost nothing in common except the badge. Every entry has the same parts: the tell, what it actually is, the 2026 price, the cheap cause that gets skipped, and where this does not apply. Two entries include a do-it-yourself path with honest limits. Every entry ends with the exact sentence to say at the counter.

One rule overrides everything: on a Focus, ask for the OASIS printout before you authorize anything. Ford's programs are keyed to build date and assembly plant rather than model year, they do not appear in the public federal recall lookup, and only a dealer can read them. Program 24N07 alone covers 1,483,446 cars and runs fifteen years.

First: which Focus do you actually have?

2012-2016 with the DPS6 automatic. The PowerShift years, and the center of the complaint file — built at Michigan Assembly between 1 August 2010 and 5 November 2015 by Ford's own program definitions. Items 1 and 2 are yours.

2015-2018 with the 1.0L EcoBoost three-cylinder. A different car with a different risk: the oil pump drive belt was recalled in 23V-905, the timing belt is the subject of an open NHTSA engineering analysis, and Ford cut the belt interval by a third in August 2026. Item 4 is yours.

Any Focus with a manual gearbox. Outside the DPS6 entirely. But check recall 26V-376, filed 9 June 2026 on 2015-2018 cars, which replaces the manual clutch assembly as necessary.

2012-2015, any engine. The door latch recalls 16V-643 and 20V-331 reach these, and 558 of the 1,004 latch complaints in our file are model year 2012. Item 5.

2012-2018 with the 2.0L GDI or GTDI. The canister purge valve story: recall 18V-735, program 24N07 and recall 26V-369. Item 3.

The 5-minute check that dates your Focus better than the odometer

  1. Find your build date, not just the model year. It is on the driver's door jamb label, and every Ford program on this page is defined by it.
  2. From a complete stop, accelerate gently to 25 mph, three times. A shudder that comes and goes with throttle → item 1.
  3. Watch the instrument cluster for the first ten seconds after starting. An oil pressure light that lingers on a 1.0L car → item 4, and stop driving it.
  4. Open and close each door firmly, then pull the handle from outside. Anything that does not latch first time → item 5.
  5. Check whether the check-engine light is on and note whether the fuel gauge behaves oddly. Erratic gauge plus a light on a 2.0L car → item 3.
  6. Turn the wheel lock to lock with the engine running, parked. Effort that comes and goes, or a "steering assist fault" message → item 6.

What actually determines your number

Which transmission you have. A DPS6 automatic carries a $1,200-$2,000 clutch-pack reserve with nothing behind it any more. A manual does not.

Your build date. Ford's populations are defined by assembly plant and build date and cut across model years both ways: a 2016 Focus built after 5 November 2015 was outside 14M02 while it ran, and one built before it was inside.

Whether the work was already done. 3,389 complaints (28.0%) name a recall. A clutch or module replaced under a closed program is money already spent on your behalf, and the OASIS history is the only place it shows.

Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on routine labor — but recall and program work must be performed by a Ford dealer. The full comparison maps which jobs go where.

Which engine. The 2.0L is a conventional four with a purge-valve story. The 1.0L three-cylinder uses wet belts — a timing belt and an oil pump belt that run in engine oil — and that is the one genuinely dangerous item on this page.

The ten problems, in the order they arrive

The tell. A shudder pulling away from a stop, like driving over a rumble strip, that comes and goes with throttle. Then jerking between first and second, hesitation before the car responds, and eventually a flare of revs with no matching speed.

What it actually is. A dry dual clutch has nothing hydraulic to smooth the launch, so as the friction material or the input shaft seals deteriorate the car shudders instead of slipping smoothly. Our own figures: 1,410 complaints pair a transmission or clutch word with a shudder, jerk, slip, lurch or hesitation word, median odometer 45,000 miles, 42.7% at or under 36,000 and 62.4% at or under 60,000. 🟢 The sibling guides carry the same shape from different query windows — the jerking analysis found the Focus and Fiesta together account for 1,518 of 10,601 complaints, 14.3%, at a median of 39,450 miles, and the hesitation analysis found 449 Focus complaints at a median of 30,000.

The number that changes how you read this. Inside those 1,410, 493 (35.0%) contain a persistence word — again, still, came back, did not fix, second time. That measures what complaining owners write, not how often a repair fails. But it is the reason to treat a quote as a first attempt rather than a solution.

What the safety flags say. Towed 2.48%, crash 1.28% and fire 0.00% — zero of 1,410 — against baselines of 5.11%, 4.37% and 1.82%. This transmission does not strand you or burn. It grinds you down, which is why it stayed unfixed so long and why 19.5% of these owners reached for the word "dangerous" anyway.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The OASIS printout, before a part is priced. 292 of these complaints already name a recall, and a clutch replaced under 19N08 or a module under 14M02 is work somebody else paid for. Ask which, when, and at what mileage.

Where this does not apply. A manual Focus does not have this transmission, and a shudder at 40 mph rather than from a stop is a different symptom — the shaking-when-accelerating guide covers it.

At the shop — say this: "Please print the OASIS history for this VIN and tell me what transmission work has already been done under 14M01, 14M02, 19N07 or 19N08, and at what mileage, before we discuss a clutch."

2 · Transmission control module: no-start and loss of engagement — 40,000 to 120,000 miles

The tell. Ford's own words: "intermittent symptoms of loss of transmission engagement while driving, no-start, or a lack of power," usually with a check-engine light. In our data 178 of the 1,410 (12.6%) name the module directly and 161 (11.4%) describe software or a calibration.

What it actually is. Electrical circuit failures inside the TCM, which Ford addressed first with software — program 20B22, "improved detection and over warning of electrical circuit failures in the TCM" — and then with module replacement.

The coverage, stated precisely — and why it is over. 14M02 extended the TCM warranty "to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle," and "Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners." The population is Focus with the DPS6 built 1 August 2010 through 5 November 2015. Ten years from that final build date passed in November 2025. Supplement #7 also offered a one-time out-of-term TCM replacement "through June 30, 2025," and an owner refund for past repairs that "expires November 30, 2023." Both have gone.

The one line that has not expired. In the same document: dealers "are also pre-approved to refund owner-paid emergency repairs" performed away from a dealer, and "there is no expiration date for emergency repair refunds." If you paid for a TCM at the roadside, that paperwork is still worth presenting.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A scan and a wiggle test on the module connector before a module is ordered. A shop that skips the connector is buying the expensive answer first.

Where this does not apply. A no-start with no transmission code at all is a different problem — the cranks-but-won't-start guide has that path.

At the shop — say this: "Does OASIS show 14M02 already performed on this VIN? If not, I understand the program has closed — but I want the emergency-repair refund route checked against the receipt I have."

3 · Canister purge valve, stalling and the fuel tank — 50,000 to 120,000 miles

The tell. An engine that stalls at low speed, hesitates or runs rough, with the check-engine light on. Sometimes an erratic fuel gauge, and in the worst cases a fuel tank deformed inward. 575 complaints (4.8%) in our file name the canister or purge valve and 492 (4.1%) name the fuel tank, against 1,973 (16.3%) that describe a stall, at a tow share of 10.09%. 🟢

What it actually is. NHTSA's own recall query RQ23-006 put it plainly: a purge valve "that can stick open" causes "excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system, potentially deforming the fuel tank, collapsing on itself," producing "a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability issues, and/or loss of motive power." That was recall 18V-735 (1,282,596 vehicles, October 2018) and 19V-515.

Why this is the most valuable paragraph on the page. RQ23-006, opened 15 September 2023 and closed 20 December 2024, found a different purge valve problem from the one the recalls addressed, and Ford answered it with Customer Satisfaction Program 24N07, dealer letter dated 4 December 2024. The terms are unusually generous: "a no-cost, one-time replacement (if needed) for the canister purge valve (CPV) for 15 years of service (unlimited miles) from the warranty start date of the vehicle," on 2012-2018 Focus vehicles built at Michigan Assembly from 1 August 2010 through 10 May 2018 — 1,483,446 vehicles — and "Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners." Branded and salvage-title vehicles are eligible "unless emission coverage is explicitly canceled." The dealer letter also says "Do not perform this program unless the affected vehicle exhibits the covered condition," so you have to go in with the symptom.

And then two more. Emissions recall 25E05 covers 2015-2018 cars with the 1.0L engine, and its owner letter says so directly: "Even if you had 24N07 performed on your vehicle, you still need to have 25E05 performed." And recall 26V-369, filed 9 June 2026 on 257,868 cars "previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 18V735," updates the PCM software free of charge; owner letters were mailed 29 July 2026.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Reading the codes before buying anything. A P0455, P0456 or P1450 with a stalling complaint on a Focus of these years points straight at this family, and the fix may cost nothing. The P0455 guide covers the code side.

Fix it yourself — the free half. Read the codes with any basic scanner and write them down, then take the numbers to the dealer with the program numbers. The honest limit: do not replace the valve yourself on a car inside 24N07 — you will spend $150-$350 on a part Ford would have fitted free, and you will still need 25E05.

Where this does not apply. A stall with no code stored and no fuel-gauge oddity is a different diagnosis; the stalls-while-driving guide works through it.

At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against Customer Satisfaction Program 24N07, emissions recall 25E05 and recall 26V-369, and tell me which of the three are open before we price a purge valve."

4 · Oil pressure loss on the 1.0L: wet belts and engine seizure — 60,000 to 100,000 miles

The tell. An oil pressure warning light, then a loss of power, often within the same minute. NHTSA's own words in the PE25-020 closing resume: "a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle is in motion," and "Some complaints allege that a sudden loss of motive power or engine seizure occurred without warning."

What our data says, independently. 218 Focus complaints name oil pressure or an oil pump. 214 of them — 98.2% — are model years 2015-2018, the 1.0L population. The tow share is 39.91%, six times the file's own 6.46% and by far the highest subset we measured on this car. The median odometer is 74,500 miles. 🟢 NHTSA, working from Ford's warranty data rather than from complaints, put the average failure at "approximately 70,000 miles." Two different instruments, the same answer.

What it actually is — two belts, one problem. The 1.0L runs a wet timing belt and a wet oil pump belt, both immersed in engine oil. Recall 23V-905 (22 December 2023, 139,730 vehicles, 2016-2018 Focus and 2018-2022 EcoSport) addressed the oil pump drive belt and tensioner: "the oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure," and "a loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist." The remedy is worth reading twice: dealers replace the tensioner and belt, and "if engine failure occurs due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair... free of charge (parts and labor)."

The part that is still being decided. NHTSA opened PE25-020 on 18 December 2025 into the timing belt on 2015-2017 Fiesta and 2015-2018 Focus vehicles with the 1.0L and a manual transmission, and on 31 July 2026 upgraded it to engineering analysis EA26-004, which is open. Its findings so far: the belt material "may degrade and create debris that clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen"; failures occurred at an average of about 70,000 miles; "98% of the failures occurred prior to the 150,000 mile timing belt replacement interval"; failures happened "despite evidence of proper and routine oil maintenance"; and "the oil pump pick-up screen is not serviceable, so debris accumulation cannot be inspected or manually removed without removing the engine from the vehicle."

Ford's answer, three weeks before this guide. Customer Satisfaction Program 26L02, dealer letter 25 August 2026, US population 146,945, cuts the timing belt and oil pump belt interval "down to 100,000 miles/6 years" and offers reimbursement for a prior engine repair or replacement — but only under conditions worth knowing before you apply: the repair must be dated before 14 September 2026, the vehicle must have been under ten years old and under 150,000 miles at the time, the repair order must show an oil pressure issue or one of the codes P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019 or P033F, and you must provide "documentation of the last three oil changes prior to engine repair," in the correct oil, with at most "a maximum delay of 3 months / 1,800 miles."

The cheap cause that gets skipped — and this one is genuinely free. Running the VIN. Two campaigns and a program touch this engine and none of them costs anything. Beyond that, the honest advice here is the opposite of "cheap cause first": an oil pressure light on this engine is not a sensor to chase, it is a car to stop driving.

Where this does not apply. The 2.0L four-cylinder uses a chain and is outside all of this.

At the shop — say this: "This is a 1.0L. Please check recall 23V-905 and Customer Satisfaction Program 26L02 against the VIN, and tell me whether the oil pump belt and tensioner have already been replaced and on what date."

Which of this car's noises can actually be captured with the car parked is worth knowing before you record anything. A DPS6 shudder is felt from a stop and needs the road, so it is a test-drive and OASIS question rather than a microphone one. A rattle, tick or knock at idle is different: it exists with the car standing still, and on a 1.0L that is the one you most want a second opinion on. Film the engine running, parked, for thirty seconds and Pulscar's free check returns an Engine Health Score, a system-by-system status, a likely cause, a severity and a repair-cost estimate, or says "inconclusive" when the clip cannot support a verdict. It does not decide whether the car is safe to drive, and it does not read codes or check recalls — those come from a scanner and a VIN lookup. Free, no card, about ten minutes.

5 · Door latches that will not stay shut — any mileage

The tell. A door that will not latch, that rattles or shows an ajar warning, or that opens while driving. In our file 1,004 complaints (8.3%) describe a door latch problem, and 558 of them are model year 2012 — the largest single-year cluster on this car outside the transmission. 🟢

What it actually is. Ford's recall wording: "A component within the door latches may break, preventing the doors from latching." 16V-643, September 2016, covers 2012-2015 Focus among other lines. Then 20V-331, June 2020, recalls vehicles "previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643" — dealers "inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary."

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Checking whether the recall was completed, and completed correctly, before paying anyone. Two campaigns and two NHTSA investigations (PE16-001 and RQ19-005) sit behind this part.

Where this does not apply. A door that latches but rattles over bumps is usually a striker adjustment, which is minutes of labor.

At the shop — say this: "Please confirm against the VIN whether recalls 16V-643 and 20V-331 are both closed on this car, and check the latch date codes rather than assuming the earlier repair was correct."

6 · "Steering assist fault" on 2012-2014 cars — 40,000 to 100,000 miles

The tell. A dashboard message naming the steering assist, with the wheel suddenly heavy — usually when starting or at low speed, and normal again after a restart.

What it actually is — stated as a cluster, not a finding. 1,042 complaints (8.6%) describe a steering assist fault or a loss of power steering, and 592 of them are model year 2012, at a median of 77,000 miles. 🟢 We checked the federal recall file: no campaign in it covers 2012 Focus power steering. We are publishing this as a cluster without a campaign, which is what it is — not as a defect finding, which would need evidence we do not have.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The battery and the charging system, genuinely. An electric power steering system browns out on low voltage and posts exactly this message, so a load test and an alternator output reading come before a rack. The hard-to-turn guide works through the rest of the sequence.

Where this does not apply. Heavy steering that never goes away, at all speeds, is a different failure from an intermittent message that clears on a restart.

At the shop — say this: "Before we discuss a rack, can you load-test the battery, check charging voltage under load, and pull the stored steering codes with their freeze-frame data?"

7 · Front brakes — 30,000 to 70,000 miles

The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that stops under hard pressure — the wear indicator at roughly 3mm. Grinding is low, gritty and felt through the pedal.

What it actually is. Ordinary consumption on a light compact, which is why this range sits near the bottom of this series.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A squeal only on the first two damp-morning stops is surface rust — free, and gone by the third stop. Ask for pad thickness in millimeters; above 4mm you are buying time you already have.

Where this does not apply. A shudder through the pedal under braking is not wear, it is runout — the shakes-when-braking guide covers it.

Fix it yourself — realistic. Front pads and rotors on a Focus are among the friendliest driveway jobs anywhere: $90-$180 in parts, two hours, jack stands mandatory. The honest limit: uneven wear side to side or a seized slide pin means a caliper, and a dragging caliper destroys new parts within weeks.

At the shop — say this: "What's the actual pad thickness in millimeters front and rear, and are the rotors above minimum spec? If the pads are over 4 millimeters I'd rather wait."

8 · Coolant loss and overheating — 60,000 to 120,000 miles

The tell. Temperature climbing under load, coolant disappearing with no puddle, a sweet smell, or the heater going cold at idle. In our file 419 complaints (3.5%) name coolant or overheating, at a median of 83,000 miles, a tow share of 10.74% and a fire share of 1.19%. 🟢

What it actually is. Usually a plastic thermostat housing, a hose joint or a pump seal, occasionally something larger. The order of operations matters more than the part.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A cooling system pressure test before any component is quoted: fifteen minutes, $60-$140, and it either finds the leak or tells you the loss is internal. The coolant-leak guide covers the addresses in order of likelihood.

Where this does not apply. Overheating only at idle that clears when you move points at the cooling fan, and that guide is a separate diagnosis.

At the shop — say this: "Can you pressure-test the cooling system and show me where it is losing coolant, before quoting a part? And please check for combustion gas in the coolant while it's on the machine."

9 · Wheel bearings — 70,000 to 130,000 miles

The tell. A hum from 40-50 mph that rises with road speed and changes when you steer gently — that sensitivity names the side.

What it actually is. Rolling elements wear and the assembly develops play. It worsens steadily and can eventually affect wheel-speed sensor readings.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A cupped tire produces nearly the same drone, so rotate the tires and drive for a week before buying anything. The humming guide separates the sources.

The free confirmation. With the vehicle safely supported, spin the wheel by hand listening for a gritty rumble, then rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock feeling for play.

Where this does not apply. If the hum does not change with steering input, look at tires and driveline instead.

At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I steer, so I think a bearing — but can we rotate the tires and show me the play by hand before ordering parts?"

10 · Suspension: struts and the clunk that isn't them — 80,000 to 140,000 miles

The tell. A clunk over speed bumps and expansion joints, felt more than heard, from one corner. Later: floatiness over crests and patchy tire wear.

What it actually is. Struts fade rather than fail, which is why owners rarely notice until a newer car feels startlingly composed.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The clunk over bumps is more often a sway bar end link than a strut — $150-$250 installed against $700-$1,200 for a strut pair, and confirmed by hand in ninety seconds on a lift. The clunking guide covers the other candidates.

Where this does not apply. A clunk only when shifting between Drive and Reverse is a mount or a driveline joint, not suspension.

At the shop — say this: "Before we discuss struts, can you check the sway bar end links and strut mounts on the lift and show me the play? And if we do struts, are you quoting complete assemblies?"

Three measurements are worth carrying away.

The transmission dominates by count and is the mildest thing here by consequence. Inside the 1,410 transmission-symptom complaints: towed 2.48%, crash 1.28%, fire zero of 1,410, 14 injuries and no deaths, against file-wide baselines of 5.11%, 4.37% and 1.82%. Compare that with the 218 oil-pressure complaints on the 1.0L, where 39.91% were towed. The famous failure is a wallet problem. The obscure one is the dangerous one.

Model year 2014 is the peak. 2,448 complaints, more than any other year, and 16.1% of them pair a transmission word with a symptom word — the highest share in the file. By comparison 2012 runs 8.7% and 2018 runs 7.2%, because those two years carry other clusters: door latches and steering on the 2012 car, the 1.0L oil pump on the 2018. Filing follows mail, not failure. 2,177 complaints were filed in 2019, the biggest year in this file — the year Ford mailed 19N07 and 19N08 and NHTSA opened door-latch recall query RQ19-005. A spike in a complaint file often measures a letter rather than a wave of breakages.

Two rows are worth pausing on. Clutch replacement outnumbers software eleven to five, which is the opposite of what most modern transmission complaints look like. And the input shaft seal — the specific part Ford's own 14M01 program was written to address — appears in eighteen narratives out of 1,410. Does a shudder on a Ford Focus always mean the clutch? Not always, and the order in which you check matters more here than on most cars. A shudder pulling away from a stop on a 2012-2016 automatic is the DPS6 in 1,410 of our complaints, and the clutch is what 348 of those owners say was replaced. But 178 name the transmission control module instead, 161 describe a software calibration, and 18 name the input shaft seal that Ford's own first program was written about. A worn engine mount, a misfire under load and a dragging brake can all produce something a driver reads as the same lurch. The sequence that protects you is a printed OASIS history, then stored codes with freeze-frame data, then a road test with the technician in the car. Every Ford program on the DPS6, and when each one closed

Ford never recalled the PowerShift. There is no safety campaign for the transmission itself in the federal file — the power-train campaigns that do exist cover a control module on 2,456 cars, a differential on 865, and the manual transmission clutch. What Ford issued instead was a chain of customer satisfaction programs, and the chain has ended. 🟢

The recall record: 29 campaigns, and the five still moving in 2026

Twenty-nine distinct campaigns name the Ford Focus in the eleven-year file, with a combined population of 6,939,205 vehicles counted once per campaign — a figure that is not a Focus number, because NHTSA publishes one population per campaign across every model in it. What matters is which ones are still moving. 🟢

26V-369, 9 June 2026, 257,868 vehicles, 2012-2018. Cars "previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 18V735." The purge valve "may malfunction, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving." Remedy is a PCM software update, free. Owner letters were mailed 29 July 2026.

26V-376, 9 June 2026, 5,252 vehicles, 2015-2018. The manual transmission: "dealers will update the software... and will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge." The consequence NHTSA prints is a transmission fluid leak near hot components and a fire risk. Interim letters mailed 5 August 2026.

26V-011, 15 January 2026, 116,672 vehicles, 2013-2018. The engine block heater, with an electrical short circuit fire risk, and unusually direct advice: "Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied." Interim letters mailed 6 March 2026.

23V-905, 22 December 2023, 139,730 vehicles, 2016-2018. The 1.0L oil pump drive belt and tensioner of item 4, with a free engine assembly where one has already failed. Final owner letters mailed 11 August 2025.

25E05, owner letters March 2026, 2015-2018 with the 1.0L. The emissions recall on the purge valve and PCM, required even where 24N07 was already performed.

What the complaint file does not show

Only 410 complaints name the PowerShift or DPS6 by name, out of 5,247 that use any transmission word. Owners describe a car that shudders; they mostly do not know what is under it. Any analysis that counts the brand name of the gearbox will find a tenth of the real set.

Twenty-six complaints name a timing belt, against 218 naming oil pressure or an oil pump. That is not evidence the belt is rarely the cause — NHTSA's teardown analysis says degraded belt material clogs the pick-up screen — it is evidence that owners write down the warning light they saw rather than the part a teardown found.

No denominator, anywhere. NHTSA publishes no registration or sales figures alongside complaints, so none of these counts can become a failure rate, and a car that sold in Focus volumes generates more complaints arithmetically. One row inverts the guide. A 2012-2016 automatic with a documented clutch replacement under 19N08 and a module under 14M02 is in a materially better position than an identical car with no paperwork — the two repairs the programs paid for have been done, and neither is coming back on the seller's dollar.

Should you buy a used Ford Focus?

Most people searching for Focus problems are deciding whether to buy one, or whether to keep one, so here it is directly.

What the reputation gets right. The DPS6 is as bad as people say, and 45.3% of everything owners filed with the federal government about this car is in that component family. The coverage that once softened it has gone.

What the reputation gets wrong. The transmission is not the dangerous part of this car: in our data it does not strand, crash or burn, with zero fires in 1,410 complaints. The 1.0L oil pressure cluster, which almost no buyer's guide mentions, was towed 39.91% of the time and has an open federal engineering analysis behind it.

Where the live money is. Program 24N07 runs fifteen years with no mileage cap and transfers to you, on 1,483,446 cars. On a 2016 Focus delivered in 2016, that is coverage into 2031. Nobody prices that in, because nobody knows it exists.

The five-minute pre-purchase procedure:

  • Ask the seller for a Ford dealer OASIS printout by VIN. It is free and it is the only place the programs show.
  • Get the build date from the door jamb, not the model year.
  • Establish which engine and which transmission, because they split the entire risk profile.
  • Accelerate gently from a full stop three times and feel for shudder, then drive at 40-50 mph with the radio off.
  • Open and close every door and check both latch recalls are closed.
  • On a 1.0L, ask whether 23V-905 has been completed and when the timing belt was last done.

The short version: a manual Focus, or an automatic with documented clutch and module work, is a cheap and honest used car. An undocumented 2012-2016 automatic is a $1,200-$2,000 gamble on a repair that 35.0% of complaining owners say came back.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Focus owners the most

Trap 1: the program nobody looked up. The situation: a 2016 Focus stalling at low speed with the check-engine light on, at 96,000 miles. What the shop says: "Purge valve, $280 with the diagnosis." What is really happening: program 24N07 replaces that valve at no cost for fifteen years of service with no mileage limit, and the coverage transfers to subsequent owners. Recall 25E05 and recall 26V-369 may also be open on the same car. Your protective question: "Can you check 24N07, 25E05 and 26V-369 against this VIN before we price anything?"

Trap 2: the oil pressure light treated as a sensor. The situation: a 2017 Focus 1.0L with an oil pressure warning that flickers, at 71,000 miles. What the shop says: "Probably the sender. Let's monitor it." What is really happening: NHTSA's own analysis of this engine says the belt material can clog the oil pump pick-up screen, that failures averaged about 70,000 miles, and that the screen "is not serviceable... without removing the engine from the vehicle." Our 218 oil-pressure complaints on this car carry a 39.91% tow rate. Your protective question: "Has recall 23V-905 been completed on this VIN, and can you check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge rather than replacing the sender?"

Trap 3: the clutch quoted as a cure. The situation: shudder from a stop on a 2014 Focus at 78,000 miles. What the shop says: "New clutch pack, and it'll be like new." What is really happening: 493 of the 1,410 transmission-symptom complaints in our file contain a persistence word, and 348 describe a clutch that was already replaced. That is not proof a second clutch will fail, but it is a reason to ask what else is being inspected — seals, the module, the calibration level — and to get the answer in writing. Your protective question: "What exactly is included beyond the clutch pack, what calibration level will the module be left at, and what is the warranty on the repair in months and miles?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.

Scenario 1 — the free engine. A 2017 Focus 1.0L loses power on a highway at 68,000 miles with the oil pressure light on, and is towed. The engine has seized. Recall 23V-905 authorizes dealers to replace the engine assembly free of charge, parts and labor, where an oil pump belt or tensioner failure caused it. Lesson: the most expensive outcome on this page is also the one most likely to be free — but only if the VIN is checked before anyone starts quoting.

Scenario 2 — the extension that expired last year. A 2015 Focus loses transmission engagement at 104,000 miles in 2026. Under 14M02 the module would have been covered to ten years or 150,000 miles — but ten years from the last build date in the population passed in November 2025. Lesson: a program with a ten-year clock is not a promise, it is a countdown, and this one has finished.

Scenario 3 — the receipt that still counts. An owner paid a non-Ford shop for an emergency TCM replacement on the road in 2022 and never claimed it. 14M02 says dealers are pre-approved to refund owner-paid emergency repairs, and "there is no expiration date for emergency repair refunds." Lesson: the cash windows on these programs close before the repair windows, with one exception — and the exception is worth digging the invoice out for.

Which Ford Focus problems can a recording actually help with, and which need a scanner or a VIN? The split on this car is unusually clean, and it is worth being honest about. A DPS6 shudder happens under load, pulling away from a stop, so it cannot be captured with the car parked — that one is a test drive, an OASIS printout and a second quote. A stall with a check-engine light is a codes question, and the codes decide whether a free program applies. A knock, tick or rattle at idle is the case where a recording earns its place, and on a 1.0L three-cylinder it is also the case where a second opinion matters most. Film the engine running, parked, for thirty seconds and Pulscar's free check returns a likely cause, a severity and a cost estimate, or says "inconclusive." It does not read codes, check recalls or decide whether the car is safe to drive.

Your situation right now: four playbooks

"It shudders from a stop." Get the OASIS printout first and find out what has already been replaced and when. The programs have closed, so the question is no longer whether Ford will pay — it is whether you are about to pay for a repair that was already done once.

"The oil pressure light came on." On a 1.0L, stop driving and have it towed. Check 23V-905 and 26L02 against the VIN before any work is authorized, and if the engine has already failed, ask specifically about the free engine assembly.

"It stalls and the fuel gauge is odd." Read the codes, then ask the dealer to check 24N07, 25E05 and 26V-369 in that order. The most likely outcome is a free repair on a car nobody thinks is still covered.

"Nothing's wrong, I just bought it." Get the build date and the OASIS printout today, while nothing is broken. Note whether 24N07 is still open on your VIN — on most of this population it runs for years yet — and write the date down.

After the repair: verify, then prevent

Verify within a week. Shudder: same gentle pull-away, same road, mileage noted. Stall: two full drive cycles with no light. Oil pressure: a mechanical gauge reading at idle and at 2,000 rpm, not just a light that went out.

Get every program or recall repair documented against the VIN, with the program number on the invoice. That record is what makes the car saleable and what protects you if the same part fails again.

Prevent the next one. On a 1.0L, adopt the new interval — 100,000 miles or six years for the timing belt and oil pump belt — and keep every oil change receipt, because 26L02's reimbursement route asks for the last three. On a DPS6, treat a returning shudder as a warranty conversation with the shop that did the work, not as a new job.

Coverage depends on your VIN and build date. Ford's customer satisfaction programs do not appear in the public federal recall lookup — only a dealer's OASIS system shows them — and a program's cash window usually closes years before its repair window.
