🚨 60-Second Triage — White smoke, rough running and a low coolant level on a 2015-2018 2.0L: item 8, and there is no recall — but Defect Petition DP26008 opened on 3 September 2026 and runs on owner reports. Brake pedal sank with no warning light: item 5, recall 25V-544, 414,717 Edges, free. Reversing image blank, frozen or upside down: item 1, and there are seven campaigns to check, not one. Metallic knock then a dead engine on a 2021-2022 Sport or ST: item 2, recall 24V-635, whose Edge entry is 2,366 cars built 10 May to 29 October 2021. Shifter says Park and the car rolls: item 6, recall 22V-413, about 509,400 Edges, free.
A federal defect petition into the Ford Edge opened one week before this guide was published, on 3 September 2026, and it names the most-complained-about failure on the car: coolant getting into the cylinders of the 2.0L EcoBoost. It is not a recall. It reaches an estimated 499,603 vehicles and cites 1,563 owner reports. Nobody has been ordered to pay for anything.
This covers the second generation, 2015 to 2024. Against that one uncovered item sits a strange pile of coverage: the reversing image has been recalled under seven separate campaigns, the brake hoses under two, the shift bushing under one reaching about 509,400 cars.
By the end you will know which of the ten failures is due at your mileage, what each costs in 2026, and which items have no document behind them at all. Claims marked 🟢 rest on a numbered document listed in Sources. Claims marked ⚪ are shop-price ranges or owner-reported figures.

How to use this guide
Start with the VIN and the build date, not the symptom. Every entry has the same parts: the tell, what it actually is, the cheap cause that gets skipped, where this does not apply, and the sentence to say at the counter.
One rule overrides everything: the mileage in each heading is when the part starts talking, not when it breaks — and on this car almost every campaign is defined by a production window, not a model year. Recall 15V-250 is the extreme case: its Edge entry covers cars built between 26 and 28 February 2015, a three-day window. Recall 24V-635's Edge entry runs 10 May to 29 October 2021 while the same campaign's F-150 entry runs 1 May to 31 October. And one of the ten is not a failure at all: brakes (item 5) are consumption. A 130,000-mile Edge with every campaign closed beats an 80,000-mile one whose owner never opened the mail.
First: which Ford Edge do you actually have?
2015-2018, the 2.0L EcoBoost years. These carry 3,738 of the 5,105 complaints in our sample, 2017 heaviest at 1,319. This generation sits inside the coolant petition, both brake hose campaigns, the shift bushing recall and the big camera campaign. Items 5 to 8 are your whole guide.
2015-2016 in a salt state. Recalls 15V-250 and 19V-632 cover steering gear motor bolts that corrode, and 19V-632 lists twenty states and DC by name. A car that lived in Arizona is outside by geography alone.
2019-2024, after the facelift. Only 1,367 complaints, but concentrated: 719 are filed under Power Train and 470 describe a shudder, jerk, lurch, harsh shift or hesitation, 295 of them on 2019 alone. Item 7 is your item.
2021-2022 Sport and ST with the 2.7L EcoBoost. Recall 24V-635 names 2,366 Edges out of 90,736 vehicles. Read item 2 first, and our F-150 guide to the same campaign, where the same valve defect reaches 47,719 trucks.
The seven-minute check that dates your Edge better than the odometer
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and write down every campaign, open and completed. Seven touch the camera alone; two touch the brakes.
- Read the build date on the driver's door jamb sticker. Compare it against the windows in items 2, 5 and 9. Model year is not the test.
- Note the engine badge. 2.0L, 3.5L or 2.7L decides whether items 2, 8 and 10 exist on your car at all.
- Read the coolant level against the marks when cold, then again a week later. A level that falls with no puddle underneath is item 8 — the highest-value free observation here.
- Start it cold and watch the exhaust in a mirror. White smoke that persists once warm is item 8, not condensation.
- Put it in reverse in daylight and look at the camera image. Blank, frozen, distorted or inverted is item 1, and every version is free.
- With the handbrake on, move the shifter through the gates and watch the cluster. A display that disagrees with the lever is item 6.

What actually determines your number
Which engine is in front of you. Larger than mileage, larger than trim. The 2.0L carries the coolant story; the V6 and the 2.7L do not.
The build date, not the model year. One Edge campaign is defined by a three-day window; another splits a model year down the middle.
Whether a part has a document behind it at all. Item 8 is the most-complained-about failure here and has no recall. Item 1 has seven. Same car, different bargaining position.
Where the car has lived. One recall here is a road-salt recall listing twenty states and DC. Nothing else here is geography-gated.
Whether the coverage is a recall or a programme. A recall shows on the public VIN lookup. Programmes 22N12 and 24N12 do not, and between them they are worth four figures on the right car.
Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labour-heavy work, but recall and programme work goes to a Ford or Lincoln dealer. The comparison maps which jobs go where.
The ten problems, in the order they arrive
1 · The reversing image, recalled seven times — 5,000 to 90,000 miles
The tell. The reversing image is blank, milky, frozen, delayed or upside down. On the newest campaign the whole centre screen goes dark for up to five minutes and comes back on its own. 123 complaints in our sample name a backup, reverse or rearview camera.
What it actually is — four faults wearing one symptom. On 2015-2018 cars it is hardware: 25V-572 says a sub-supplier "conducted an unauthorized change to their PCB (printed circuit board) header tooling, which resulted in lower terminal contact forces," and those forces "cause fretting corrosion on the terminal header over time." Ford recorded 44,123 global warranty claims, a "27 R/1000 failure rate," 195 owner questionnaires and 18 accidents. On 2019-2020 cars it is SYNC software (25V-442); on 2021-2024 cars the module itself, with 26V-124 describing an APIM "reaching temperatures of 105° C and subsequently initiating a temporary thermal shutdown."
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The lookup, before anyone quotes a part. These campaigns overlap by symptom and differ by remedy — a 2015 car needs a camera, a 2022 car a software version number. 26V-124 shows why the symptom is useless as a guide: Ford found it in connected-vehicle telemetry and wrote that "as of February 17, 2026, Ford is not aware of any warranty claims or VOQs attributable to the APIM temporary thermal shutdown."
Where this does not apply. 25V-572 stops at Edges built 4 September 2018, so a 2019 car with a dead camera is in a different document; 26V-124 needs the mid or high SYNC 4 system.
At the shop — say this: "Check this VIN against 25V-572, 26V-124, 25V-315, 22V-151, 25V-160, 25V-442 and 20V-575, and tell me which applies and whether it was performed."
2 · Intake valves on the 2.7L EcoBoost, Sport and ST — 0 to 20,000 miles
The tell. Ford's own warning list is short: "An engine malfunction indicator lamp will illuminate on the cluster and customers may notice their vehicle running rough prior to losing motive power." Only one complaint in our whole Edge sample uses the words "intake valve" — because on this engine the failure arrives before most people have had time to file anything.
What it actually is. 24V-635 states that affected engines "may contain intake valves that have a propensity to crack and break," with the cause given as "grinding burn and over-specification hardness at the third keeper groove location in the valve." Investigation EA23002's closing resume records Ford's own data — 396 customer complaints, 825 warranty claims, 936 engine exchanges — and that "the vast majority of failures have occurred before 20,000 miles with over half of all reported failures occurring before 5,000 miles."
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Reading the door jamb and running the VIN before authorising any paid teardown. The Edge window is 10 May to 29 October 2021 — not the F-150 window in the same campaign, and not a model year. Then ask about 24N12, the programme EA23002 records Ford promising, "which will provide extended warranty coverage to the subject vehicles through the earlier of 10 years or 150,000 miles."
Where this does not apply. A 2.0L or 3.5L Edge is outside 24V-635 at any build date, and so is a 2.7L built in November 2021: EA23002 identified a supplier "spike period of May 2021 – October 2021" that ended with a change of alloy. A knock that fades under load is more often an accessory or a heat shield — the knocking guide separates the families.
At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against recall 24V-635 and programme 24N12. I want the engine cycle test performed and the result printed on the order either way."

3 · Airbags, belts and latches: the campaigns with no symptom — any mileage
The tell. There isn't one, and that is the item. A driver airbag that will not inflate fully, a pretensioner anchor "improperly crimped," a striker bolt 5 mm short and a weak tether weld all fail silently and matter once. In our sample 87 complaints mention an airbag and 52 carry a crash flag — because such complaints are filed after a crash, not because the airbag caused one.
What it actually is, at very different scales. 17V-123 is the large one: 27,531 Edges built 8 October 2015 to 15 February 2017. The rest are tiny: 19V-766, 366 cars over two days; 21V-377, 82 cars; 18V-612, 503 cars whose supplier "mislabeled and delivered striker bolts 5mm shorter than the specification"; 23V-198, 19 cars built on one day. Separately, EA21002 is an open Engineering Analysis into non-recalled desiccated Takata inflators listing 2015-2017 Edges.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. The lookup itself, and checking completed campaigns as well as open ones on a used car. These windows are days long: a seller cannot tell you whether their car was built on 27 July or 2 August 2018, and that decides 18V-612 entirely.
Where this does not apply. Almost everywhere — that is the point of naming the populations. Nineteen cars is not a general Edge risk.
At the shop — say this: "Print the full campaign history for this VIN, open and completed, including 17V-123, 18V-612, 19V-766, 21V-377 and 23V-198."
4 · Panoramic roof glass that breaks on its own — any mileage
The tell. A loud report like a gunshot at speed, then glass in the cabin. The quieter version is a crack that appears overnight in a parked car and is mistaken for a water outline until it dries. Complaints cluster on the earliest cars: 57 on 2015, 32 on 2016, 27 on 2017.
What it actually is, and what we could not find. Tempered glass under tension fails from an edge flaw and the whole pane goes at once, which is why owners describe an explosion rather than a crack. What is missing is any document. We read NHTSA's investigation records rather than trusting a search: the only entries naming 2015-2024 Edges are DP26008, PE24027, EA23002, EA21002 and RQ21002, none about glass. The one Edge roof recall on the books, 17V-205, covers 84 cars built on 21 and 22 February 2017 with "an improperly welded windshield header": a weld, not the glass.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Photographing the glass, dated, before it fails, and checking your policy for glass cover before accepting a quote. An outer pane that was already chipped is a different negotiation from one that broke unprovoked, and the only person who can prove which you had is you.
Where this does not apply. An Edge without the panoramic roof does not have this item. A crack radiating from a visible impact point is stone damage.
At the shop — say this: "Before ordering glass, photograph the break edge and tell me whether there is an impact origin. I want that in writing for the insurer."
How do you find out whether a Ford Edge problem is already paid for before you spend anything? Work down three lists rather than one, because they live in different places. The first is the public NHTSA recall lookup, which shows the camera campaigns, the brake hose campaigns and the shift bushing campaign against your VIN in about a minute. The second is Ford's customer satisfaction programmes, which do not appear on that lookup at all and must be asked for by number at a dealer: 22N12 for the flexplate on a 2015 to 2018 car, 24N12 for the engine on a 2021 or 2022 with the 2.7L. The third is the service bulletins, which change nothing about who pays but tell a technician exactly what test to run. Pulscar reads the noise a car is making while you read the paperwork behind it.
5 · Brakes: pads, rotors, and two hose recalls — 25,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. For the wear item, a thin high squeal at low speed that goes quiet under hard pressure. For the recall item, something worse: a pedal that sinks further than it should, usually with no warning light first. 635 complaints mention brakes, 236 a hose, line or fluid.
What it actually is, and why it took two recalls. 20V-469 blamed the front hoses on "a consistent localized failure of the internal reinforcement braid due to cyclic fatigue," and admitted why nobody caught it: "only 88% of suspension articulation was utilized on the brake hose test rig during life testing." Ford then argued for years that the rear hoses were safe. PE24027's closing resume records ODI disagreeing — consumers "reported experiencing sudden loss of braking ability... without any prior warning such as a 'low brake fluid' warning indicator" — and calls Ford's assessment "contrary to the consumer experiences described above." Ford filed 25V-544 a month later, still saying "the root cause... has not been fully determined to date."
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Asking for pad thickness in millimetres first: above 4 mm you are buying time you already own. And on a 2015-2018 car, asking whether the 25V-544 inspection has been done — the interim letter told owners about the risk without fixing it. A pedal that has changed feel is not a wear question: the braking noise guide separates the squeal you can wait on from the symptom you cannot.
Fix it yourself — the measurement, not the job. Most Edge wheels let you see the outer pad through the spokes. Compare left to right with a torch, write the reading down with the date, and look behind each rear wheel for a wet film near the hose crimp: PE24027 records owners finding "brake fluid present on the rear tires and roadway... immediately after the incident." The honest limit: anything that opens the hydraulic system — a hose you fitted and did not bleed correctly is a brake that works until it does not.
Where this does not apply. A 2019 or later Edge is outside both hose recalls, and 25V-544 stops at cars built 21 December 2017 despite being titled 2015-2018, because Ford changed the braid material from PVA to PET that month. And 44 of the 635 brake complaints carry a crash or fire flag, meaning those reports also record a crash — not that the brakes caused it. One of three we read at random was a sudden-acceleration report.
At the shop — say this: "What is the pad thickness in millimetres front and rear, and has 25V-544 been performed on this VIN or only mailed? If the parts are not available yet, put that on the order."
6 · The shift bushing that lets it roll away — any mileage, worse with heat
The tell. You put it in Park, the lever sits in Park, and the car rolls. The subtler version comes first: the cluster disagrees with the lever, or the car will not restart because it was switched off in gear. Only 11 complaints in our sample use rollaway language, which is the trap — this is a recall you find by lookup, not by symptom.
What it actually is. 22V-413 describes a bushing that "may degrade or detach," so that "the transmission may not be in the park position, even though the shifter position indicates that the vehicle was shifted to park," with the dangerous detail: "the driver does not receive a warning message or audible chime." Ford's stated cause is unusually honest — "root cause is unknown," heat and humidity suspected in "the hydrological breakdown of the bushing material." The chronology lists four earlier campaigns on the same Hilex Hytrel 4556 bushing (18S20, 19S16, 21S24, 22S25) before this one swept up "the remaining vehicles in North America."
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Using the parking brake, every time, on any 2015-2018 Edge whose 22V-413 status you have not confirmed in writing. Free, immediate, and the entire mitigation. The remedy is a bushing and a cap, and reimbursement for owners who already paid closed on 29 August 2022.
Where this does not apply. A 2019 or later Edge is outside 22V-413, and this is not a transmission that will not select a gear, which is item 7.
At the shop — say this: "Has 22V-413 been performed on this VIN, and was the protective cap fitted as well as the bushing? I want the completion date on the invoice."
7 · Transmission shudder, and the coverage programme nobody mentions — 40,000 to 100,000 miles
The tell. A shudder like rumble strips, felt below about 45 mph under light throttle and blamed on the road. On 2015-2018 cars listen instead for a rattle at start-up and at idle in drive. 633 complaints describe a shudder, jerk, lurch, harsh shift or hesitation, 470 on 2019-2024 cars and 295 on 2019 alone.
What it actually is — two transmissions, two documents. On 2015-2018 cars with the 6F35, programme 22N12 names the mechanism: "a cracked flexplate may cause a rattling noise at start up and/or while driving... Some customers may also feel a powertrain vibration, encounter an inability to start the engine, or experience a loss of motive power while driving." On 2019-2024 cars with the 8F35, TSB 26-2171 of 17 April 2026 describes something else: a "shudder condition, most noticeable at speeds below 60 mph," with "no relevant DTCs present," which "may be perceived/felt as an engine misfire... due to a concern with the output planetary assembly." It supersedes 25-2154 to add "the replacement of the output planetary carrier assembly" to a job that was a converter alone.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Asking for 22N12 by name. It is a programme, not a recall, so it does not appear on the public VIN lookup — a dealer sees it in OASIS and you do not. Its terms are generous and almost unknown: "100% coverage – Up to 10 years of service, and 100,000 miles," "50% coverage" to 120,000, and "coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners." Covered cars are 2015-2018 Edges built at Oakville between 25 July 2014 and 4 September 2018, and if the borescope finds a crack, "the flexplate, transmission fluid pump, and torque converter will be replaced." Where this does not apply. 22N12's clock runs "from the warranty start date of the vehicle," so a 2015 car has already passed ten years and a 2016 one is close: check the in-service date before you count on it. An Edge ST is outside TSB 26-2171, because it uses the heavier-duty 8F57. And the four powertrain recalls on this car are far smaller than the topic — 6,026 vehicles in 17V-427, 25 more in 18V-390, 165 in 20V-550 and 147 in 21V-011, of which 25 are Edges. None is about shudder.
At the shop — say this: "Check OASIS for Customer Satisfaction Program 22N12 on this VIN and borescope the flexplate. On a 2019-2024 car, check TSB 26-2171 before quoting a torque converter alone."
Which Ford Edge transmission problems does Ford actually pay for, and which are yours? More than most owners think, and the difference is a document nobody looks up. Customer Satisfaction Program 22N12 gives 2015-2018 Edge owners a free flexplate, transmission fluid pump and torque converter for up to ten years and one hundred thousand miles from the warranty start date, at half price to one hundred and twenty thousand, and that coverage transfers automatically to later owners. It is a programme rather than a recall, so a public VIN lookup does not show it and you have to ask a dealer by number. On 2019 to 2024 cars the equivalent paper is bulletin 26-2171, which now prescribes replacing the output planetary assembly along with the torque converter. Record thirty seconds and Pulscar tells you which family of noise you have before that conversation starts.
8 · Coolant into the cylinders on the 2.0L EcoBoost — 60,000 to 100,000 miles
The tell. In owners' words, in order: the coolant level drops with no puddle; white smoke that does not clear once warm; a rough idle and a misfire code; then a loss of power. Ford's bulletin lists the codes — "P0300, P0301-P0304, P0316, P0217, P1285 and/or P1299" — and the petition adds an "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" warning. Failure mileage across 338 parsed complaints has a median near 77,000, middle half 64,000 to 97,000.
What it actually is, and exactly what does and does not exist on paper. Coolant crossing into a combustion chamber steam-cleans the cylinder and stops being coolant, so the engine misfires and overheats in one event. TSB 22-2229 of 9 June 2022 is titled "2.0L EcoBoost - Coolant In Cylinders, White Exhaust Smoke And/Or Illuminated MIL," covers 2015-2018 Edge with no build cutoff, and tells the dealer to "replace the long block engine assembly." What does not exist is coverage: there is no NHTSA recall and no Ford warranty extension for this engine. On the same day, Ford issued Customer Satisfaction Program 21N12 for the 1.5L version of the identical failure — same symptom wording, same trouble codes — giving Fusion and Escape owners "a no-cost, one-time repair (if needed) to the 1.5L short block, due to coolant intrusion to the cylinder bores, for 7 years of service or 84,000 miles." No Edge row. No 2.0L. The class action Miller et al. v. Ford Motor Company, No. 2:20-cv-01796 (E.D. Cal.) names 2015-2018 Edges; we did not open the docket, and a filed complaint is an allegation.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Two free readings before anyone quotes an engine. Mark the coolant level cold and read it a week later: a level that falls with nothing on the ground is the most informative observation on this car. Then ask for Ford's own test — TSB 22-2229 tells the technician to "pressurize the cooling system to 138 kPa (20 psi) and hold for 5 hours," and to proceed only if it "drop[ped] more than 27.57 kPa (4 psi)." Fix it yourself — the evidence, not the repair. Photograph the reservoir against its marks with the date visible, three times over a fortnight, and film thirty seconds of the exhaust on a cold start each time. Then file an NHTSA complaint: DP26008 exists because 1,563 people did. The honest limit: anything past the reading — a long block is where stripped threads turn a repairable car into a scrapped one.
Where this does not apply. The 3.5L V6 and the 2.7L are not in this petition or this bulletin, and neither is any 2019 or later Edge. A V6 losing coolant has a different problem: item 10. And a complaint mentioning both coolant and a long oil interval is one report with two facts, not evidence that one caused the other.
At the shop — say this: "Before any engine quote I want the TSB 22-2229 test: cooling system to 20 psi, held five hours, pressure drop written on the order. There is an open federal defect petition, DP26008, on this failure."
9 · Power steering assist and the twenty road-salt states — 60,000 to 150,000 miles
The tell. The steering goes heavy without warning, usually at low speed, and noise comes first. Ford lists the signs precisely: "motor whine, clunking noises, and illumination of the Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control malfunction indicator lamps." 232 complaints mention steering and 75 name power steering or assist, piling onto exactly the years the recalls name: 107 on 2016, 50 on 2015.
What it actually is. The steering gear motor is bolted to the housing and those bolts corrode. 19V-632 calls it a coating problem rather than a design one: a wax coating "is effective at preventing corrosion when properly applied," but "vehicle field inspection shows that the wax coating was inconsistently applied." Ford limits the consequence itself — the system "would default to base manual steering mode," a heavy wheel rather than none. This campaign exists because Transport Canada asked about three cars sitting outside the first one, 15V-250.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Asking where the car spent its winters before writing either campaign off. Eligibility is by registration and original sale, not VIN alone, so a car sold new in Ohio and now living in Texas can still be inside 19V-632. A heavy wheel with no whine and no stability-control light is more often low voltage — the hard-steering guide takes the cheaper branches first.
Where this does not apply. A 2017 or later Edge is outside both campaigns, as is any car whose whole life has been in a state that does not salt. These cars use electric assist, so the power steering fluid guide is a different architecture.
At the shop — say this: "Check this VIN against 15V-250 and 19V-632, including the state eligibility list, and inspect the steering gear motor bolts for corrosion with the result on the order."
Which Ford Edge years are actually affected by the coolant intrusion problem, and how do you tell? The federal defect petition opened on 3 September 2026 names model years 2015 through 2018 with the 2.0 litre EcoBoost engine, an estimated 499,603 vehicles and 1,563 owner reports. Ford's own bulletin on the same failure covers the same four model years with no build-date cutoff, which is unusual on this car, where nearly every other campaign is defined by a production window measured in days or months. A 3.5 litre V6 of the same year is outside it entirely and fails in a different direction, into the oil rather than into the cylinders. Record thirty seconds and Pulscar tells you which family of engine noise you have before a shop tells you which engine you need.
10 · The other coolant story: the V6's internal water pump — 100,000 to 160,000 miles
The tell. Coolant disappearing with no external leak, as in item 8 — but the second signature is different: the oil goes light, milky or over-full on the dipstick, and the engine may sound normal until the bearings give up.
What it actually is, and why it is a separate item. Almost every guide merges the two engines into one "Edge coolant problem." The 2.0L drives its water pump off the accessory belt, outside the engine. The transversely mounted 3.5L Cyclone V6 has its pump inside, behind the timing cover and driven by the timing chain, so when the seal goes the coolant has nowhere to go but the crankcase, where it mixes with the oil. That is why the job is quoted at 12 to 14 hours: the labour is the timing cover, not the pump.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Pulling the dipstick in daylight at every oil change on any 3.5L past 100,000 miles. A coffee-coloured film on the stick or under the oil cap is a five-second check that decides whether this item is live, and it is the only early warning this failure gives. Where this does not apply. No 2019 or later Edge has this engine: the 3.5L V6 was dropped when the eight-speed arrived, and it does not exist on a 2.0L or 2.7L. And 24 complaints is not a common failure by volume — it is here because the cost of missing it is an engine, and because it is the item most confused with the one that generated 1,592.
At the shop — say this: "This is the 3.5L V6. Check the oil for coolant contamination, tell me whether the internal water pump is weeping, and quote the timing cover labour separately from the part."
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up. The bottom line ends 2015-2018 Edges, and the defence against it is in the free block at the top.
Your number, by which Edge you drive
Two rows invert this guide rather than refine it. A 3.5L V6 deletes the largest item here and replaces it with a rarer, cheaper one: the engine badge, not the model year, decides which coolant story you own. And an Edge registered in a salt state is the only one where a steering repair is free — the same car in two states, two prices for one failure.
Best and worst Ford Edge years to buy, and what the lists get wrong
Search for Edge years to avoid and the answer is consistent: skip 2007, 2008 and 2011-2013, treat 2015, 2016 and 2017 as the weak years of the second generation, and buy 2014 or something from 2019 on. CarComplaints names 2017 the worst model year despite it having fewer complaints than 2013, because of "higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage." That instinct is right.
What the complaint counts actually say. In NHTSA's public database, pulled on 10 September 2026, 2015-2024 Edges carry 5,105 complaints: 721 on 2015, 898 on 2016, 1,319 on 2017, 800 on 2018, 755 on 2019, 312 on 2020, then 107, 129, 22 and 42 for 2021 through 2024. The lists are right that 2017 is the peak, but they are also reading an age curve: a 2023 Edge with almost no complaints has not proved anything yet.
Where the lists mislead, in three ways. First, none names the mechanism: the 2015-2018 story is coolant crossing into the cylinders of the 2.0L EcoBoost, and a 3.5L V6 of the same year does not have it. Second, none of the pages we read mentions DP26008, understandable since it opened on 3 September 2026, or TSB 22-2229, which has told dealers to replace long blocks since 2022, or the class action that has named 2015-2018 Edges since 2020. Third, the counts quoted come in two flavours — site-submitted and NHTSA-inclusive — so the same year appears as roughly 150 in one guide and over 800 in another, both credited to the same source.
And one claim we could not confirm. Several guides say CarComplaints gave the 2015 and 2016 Edge its "Beware of the Clunker" seal. We opened those pages; the 2015 page carries a milder badge, and we did not find that seal on 2015, 2016 or the Edge hub. The ranking may be right; the decoration is repeated between blogs unchecked.
The honest ranking, by what it costs you.
- Best position: a 2021-2024 car with the 2.0L. Outside the coolant petition, both hose recalls and the bushing recall; its live campaigns are software.
- Often better value: a 2015-2018 car whose camera and bushing campaigns are closed and whose engine has already been replaced.
- Buy with the dipstick pulled: a 2015-2018 3.5L V6. Different engine, different coolant failure, no document behind it.
- Buy with the coolant level marked: any 2015-2018 2.0L. This is the purchase decision, not a detail of it.
- Ask for 22N12 by name: a 2017 or 2018 2.0L still inside ten years and 100,000 miles. It transfers to you and does not show on a recall lookup.
What to check on the test drive. Run the seven-minute check above on the forecourt, in that order. It works on the siblings too: the Escape shares the bushing recall and the EcoBoost class action, the Fusion shares programme 22N12, the Explorer the Nano engine recall.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 — the VIN question. "What field service actions show open on this VIN, specifically 25V-544, 25V-572, 26V-124 and 22V-413?" Free, and worth more than any test here.
Checkpoint 2 — the OASIS question. "Is Customer Satisfaction Program 22N12 available on this VIN?" It does not appear on the public recall lookup.
Checkpoint 3 — the engine question. "Is this the 2.0L, the 3.5L or the 2.7L?" It decides whether items 2, 8 and 10 exist.
Checkpoint 4 — the diagnostic fee. "What is the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer. What a diagnostic should cost has detail.
Checkpoint 5 — the parts question. "Is the remedy part available, or is this an interim notice?" 25V-544 mailed a warning in September 2025 with the repair anticipated for August 2026.
Checkpoint 6 — the authorisation ceiling. "Call me before anything over this figure." The dispute guide covers what to do when it is ignored.
Three diagnostic traps that cost Ford Edge owners the most
Trap 1: the misfire quoted as a coil pack. The situation: a 2017 Edge at 78,000 miles, rough idle, check-engine light, cylinder 3 misfire. What the shop says: "Coil and plugs on that cylinder, then we'll see." What is really happening: TSB 22-2229 lists P0300 and P0301-P0304 among the codes for coolant intrusion, so a misfire code proves nothing, and the plugs may look clean because they have been steam-cleaned. Price versus bill: a couple of hundred dollars for parts that fix nothing, against a median near $8,000 across 268 owner-quoted engine figures. Your protective question: "Before ignition parts, has the cooling system been pressure-tested to 20 psi for five hours per TSB 22-2229?"
Trap 2: the recall summary that promised the wrong years. The situation: the owner of a 2019 Edge reads that 24V-635 covers "2021-2022 Bronco, F-150, Edge, Explorer" and books a free inspection. What the shop says: "Nothing open on your VIN." What is really happening: recall summaries list the whole range across every model in the campaign, not yours. The Part 573 report's Edge entry is 2,366 cars with the 2.7L built 10 May to 29 October 2021 — a different window from the F-150 rows in the same document. Price versus bill: $0 for the campaign inspection when the VIN is inside it, against $120 to $200 for a dealer diagnosis on a car that never was — and, the other way round, a free engine declined because a summary looked like it excluded you. Your protective question: "Which recall applies to my VIN specifically, and what does its Part 573 report give as the Edge production window?"
Trap 3: the brake job sold over an open campaign. The situation: a 2016 Edge at 96,000 miles, long pedal, no warning light. What the shop says: "You're due for pads and rotors all round, and we'll flush the fluid." What is really happening: a long pedal with no warning light is what NHTSA recorded in PE24027 — a rear hose failure with "no prior warning such as a 'low brake fluid' warning indicator." Pads do not cause that. Price versus bill: $500 to $1,500 for a brake job that misses it, against $0 for a 25V-544 inspection that might not. Your protective question: "Has 25V-544 been performed on this VIN, and can you inspect the rear jounce hoses before we discuss pads?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages and quotes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is a specific person's story.
Scenario 1 — the coolant level that was the whole diagnosis. Take a 2017 Edge at around 77,000 miles, the median failure mileage in the coolant complaints we read. Mark the reservoir on a Sunday and read it the next Sunday before authorising anything. A level that has fallen with nothing on the driveway points at the internal path, and the next step is Ford's five-hour pressure test, not an ignition part. Lesson: the cheapest measurement on this car decides its most expensive bill, and it takes two minutes spread over seven days.
Scenario 2 — one symptom, seven documents. Take a 2021 Edge whose reversing image goes blank. Ask which campaign the VIN falls in rather than what a camera costs: the answer might be 22V-151, or 25V-160 if the first repair was done wrong, or 25V-315, or 26V-124. All free, three of them software. Lesson: when one symptom has seven documents behind it, the lookup is the diagnosis and the symptom is noise.
Scenario 3 — the rattle that was covered and nobody said so. Take a 2016 Edge at 88,000 miles with a rattle at idle in drive. Ask for programme 22N12 by number and the arithmetic changes: inside ten years and 100,000 miles the flexplate, fluid pump and converter are free, half price to 120,000, and the coverage transferred to you with the car. Lesson: a customer satisfaction programme is invisible on a recall lookup, so the only way to find it is to name it.
Your situation right now: four playbooks
"2015-2018 car, no symptoms at all." Run the VIN against 25V-544, 25V-572, 22V-413, 20V-469 and, in a salt state, 19V-632; ask about 22N12; mark the coolant level. The highest-value half hour you will spend on this car all year.
"Rough running and white smoke on a 2.0L." Do not authorise ignition parts. Ask for the 20 psi five-hour pressure test in writing, and file an NHTSA complaint — DP26008 is decided on the record it is given.
"Shudder or rattle on a 2015-2018 car." Ask for a borescope inspection of the flexplate under 22N12, and check the in-service date against its ten-year limit, before anyone quotes a torque converter.
"Just bought it and nothing is wrong." Run the VIN, photograph the door jamb build date, pull the dipstick if it is a V6, and bank a thirty-second recording while the engine is healthy.
After the repair: verify, then prevent
Verify within a week. Recall work: completion documented against the VIN, campaign number on the invoice. Engine work: the coolant level still on its mark after seven days, because a repair that missed the path shows first as a level, not a light.
Keep the paperwork that proves scope. An engine invoice should say whether a long block or a short block went in: the next owner will ask, and it decides what is covered.
Record the before and after. Thirty seconds from the same position is the cheapest proof of repair there is. The recording guide has the protocol and our analysis of noise words in NHTSA complaints shows which precede an expensive repair.
Prevent the next one. A recall lookup once a year, a coolant level read monthly on a 2.0L, a dipstick check at every oil change on a V6. Recall 25V-572 landed seven years after the cars it covers were built.

What we looked for and did not find. There is no NHTSA recall and no Ford warranty extension covering coolant intrusion on the 2.0L EcoBoost Edge that we could locate, and the only federal file open on it is one week old. We read NHTSA's investigation flat file rather than trusting a search: the only entries naming 2015-2024 Edges are DP26008, PE24027, EA23002, EA21002 and RQ21002. We also found no document covering panoramic roof glass.
Sounds: noise index, knocking, running rough, white smoke. Money: head gasket cost, coolant leak cost, overcharging, warranty extensions. Sister guides: Escape, Explorer, Fusion, F-150. And our story.
Methodology. Document numbers, populations, production windows and defect wording were taken from the Part 573 reports, Ford dealer letters and ODI resumes themselves, downloaded and read as text. Owner-reported figures come from NHTSA's public complaints database for the Ford Edge, model years 2015 to 2024, pulled on 10 September 2026: 5,105 complaints, 126 of them carrying a crash or fire flag. Topic counts were produced with our own regular expressions and spot-checked by reading samples; each is described by what it matched rather than what it means, so "coolant, overheating or head gasket" is a word match, not a diagnosis. Dollar figures were parsed only where the amount sat within about 130 characters of the relevant part word, because a naive scan returns tyre bills and purchase prices. Complaint text is an owner's account, not an audited invoice, and people who file complaints are not a random sample. Prices are US ranges; dealer pricing typically runs 30-50% higher. Recall eligibility depends on your VIN, build date and, for two campaigns, your state.
