🚨 60-Second Triage — Clunk from the rear, wandering steering, or uneven rear tire wear on a 2013-2019 vehicle: check your VIN against the toe link recall today. NHTSA's language is that a fracture can result in loss of steering control. Coolant disappearing with no puddle: internal loss on some V6 arrangements — stop driving and get it pressure-tested. Exhaust smell under hard acceleration: item 3, and the first question is whether the vehicle has ever had rear crash repair. Whine or shudder from under the middle of the vehicle on an AWD model: item 6, the power transfer unit. Check-engine light flashing: active misfire cooking a converter — today, not next week.
In February 2026, Ford recalled another 412,774 Explorers because a rear suspension toe link can fracture.
That was NHTSA campaign 26V101, and the language in the acknowledgement letter is blunt: a rear toe-link fracture can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the toe links free of charge, and owner letters went out on 9 March 2026.
What makes it worth leading with is not the number but the pattern. That campaign is an expansion of 21V537, which covered 644,055 vehicles from 2013-2017 sold or ever registered in 22 salt states plus the District of Columbia, where road salt corrodes and seizes a cross-axis ball joint. And 21V537 was itself an expansion of 16V245, 19V435 and 20V675.
Five campaigns, ten years, one component. If you own an Explorer and last checked your VIN in 2023, you may well be covered by something that did not exist then.
By the end of this guide you will know which of the ten failures is due at your mileage, what each costs in 2026, which claims rest on a document you can pull yourself, and the cheap cause that gets skipped when the expensive one is quoted first.

How to use this guide
Run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup first — on this vehicle that genuinely comes before everything else, and it needs doing yearly rather than once. Then find your configuration and mileage. Every entry has the same parts: the tell, what it actually is, the 2026 price, the cheap cause that gets skipped, and where this does not apply. Two entries include a do-it-yourself path with honest limits. Every entry ends with the exact sentence to say at the counter.
One rule overrides everything: on an Explorer, a completed recall is not a closed chapter. The toe link campaign has been expanded five times across ten years, each time pulling in vehicles that were previously outside scope. An owner who checked once and filed it away is exactly the owner who misses the expansion that covers them.
First: which Explorer do you actually have?
2011-2017. The population covered by the closed carbon monoxide investigation, and the years where Ford ran a free sealing inspection campaign regardless of mileage or warranty status.
2013-2017, salt states. Inside 21V537 for cross-axis ball joint corrosion causing toe link fracture — 22 states plus DC, by original sale or any registration.
2014-2015, specific build window. Inside 16V245 for improperly welded rear toe links, 75,364 vehicles built between January and May 2014.
2017-2019. Inside the February 2026 expansion, 26V101, covering 412,774 vehicles.
All-wheel drive versus rear-wheel drive. AWD adds the power transfer unit, which is item 6 and one of the more commonly missed wear items on this vehicle.
2021-2022 with the 2.7 or 3.0 EcoBoost, Chicago-built. The most valuable line in this section. Recall 24S55 covers "certain 2021-2022 Bronco, F-150, Edge, Explorer, Lincoln Nautilus, and Lincoln Aviator vehicles equipped with either a 2.7L or 3.0L Nano EcoBoost engine" whose "engine intake valves may break while driving"; dealers "replace the engine as necessary, free of charge," and owner letters were mailed 3 July 2025. Ford's Customer Satisfaction Program 24N12 then adds "a no-cost, one-time repair (if needed) for an engine long block replacement for vehicles that completed the 24S55 inspection process," in effect "for 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date," and "coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners." The Explorer rows are Chicago Plant builds of 7 June through 31 October 2021, plus 2021 Chicago SHO builds of 7 June through 12 October 2021. The separate out-of-term route for cars already past those limits closed on 30 June 2026. Run the VIN before you accept any engine quote.
2020 and newer. A new platform with less settled failure patterns. Treat published mileage windows for these with caution, including ours.
The 5-minute check that dates your Explorer better than the odometer
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. Do this even if you checked before. Five expansions in ten years means a previously clear VIN can become covered.
- Walk the rear of the vehicle and look at rear tire wear. Uneven or feathered wear on the inner edges, or a rear end that feels loose over bumps → item 1, today.
- Check the coolant reservoir level and write it down. A level falling over weeks with nothing on the driveway is internal loss until proven otherwise.
- Drive it up a hill or merge hard onto a freeway with the windows up. Exhaust smell under full throttle → item 3, and the first question is crash history.
- On an AWD vehicle, listen from the middle of the vehicle at 30-50 mph with the radio off. A whine or growl that is not wheel-speed related → item 6.
- Ask for the vehicle history and specifically whether it has had rear-end collision repair. NHTSA traced the highest consumer carbon monoxide readings to repairs after rear crash damage.

"Rear end feels loose or the rear tires wear unevenly." → Item 1, and run the VIN before anything else.
"I smell exhaust when I accelerate hard." → Item 3, and the crash-history question comes first.
"Coolant is disappearing and there's no puddle." → Item 4, and stop driving until it is diagnosed.
"Rough or delayed shifting." → Item 5, and fluid condition before internal work.

What actually determines your number
Whether a campaign covers it. Recall remedies are performed free of charge and completion is recorded against your VIN. On this vehicle that is the largest single cost variable, and it changes over time as campaigns expand.
Whether the vehicle lived in a salt state. 21V537 was written specifically around road salt corroding the cross-axis ball joint, and it defines eligibility by original sale or any prior registration in 22 states plus DC. A vehicle that spent two winters in Michigan and now lives in Texas is still in scope.
Whether it has had rear-end collision repair. This matters twice: for toe link condition and, per NHTSA's own findings, for cabin exhaust readings.
Your drivetrain. AWD adds the power transfer unit and its fluid service, which is one of the cheapest preventive items here and one of the most commonly skipped.
Vehicle mass. The Explorer is a heavy three-row vehicle, so brakes, bearings and suspension components are sized and priced accordingly. Ranges in this guide sit above those in our sedan guides for that reason alone.
Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labour-heavy work, but recall work can only be performed by a Ford dealer. The full comparison maps which jobs go where.
The ten problems, in the order they arrive
1 · Rear suspension toe link — 20,000 miles onward, and any age
The tell. Often nothing until it matters, which is why the VIN check outranks the symptom check here. Where there are warning signs they include a rear end that feels loose or wandering, a clunk from the rear over bumps, and uneven or feathered wear on the inner edges of the rear tires.
What it actually is, in NHTSA's words. On 21V537: exposure to road salt can cause the cross-axis ball joint to corrode and seize, resulting in a fracture of the outboard section of the rear suspension toe link. On 16V245: the affected vehicles may have improperly welded rear suspension toe links that may fracture. In both cases the stated consequence is the same — a rear toe-link fracture can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
The scale, and why it keeps growing. 16V245 covered 75,364 vehicles from a specific 2014 build window. 21V537 covered 644,055 vehicles across 2013-2017 in 22 salt states and DC. 26V101, announced 20 February 2026, covers 412,774 vehicles from 2017-2019, with owner letters mailed from 9 March 2026 and VINs searchable on NHTSA.gov from 25 February.
The cheap cause that is free. The lookup. Recall remedies are performed at no charge and completion is recorded. On this specific component, checking annually rather than once is the correct habit, because the pattern of expansions means today's clear result is not permanent.
Where this does not apply. Vehicles outside the listed model years and, for 21V537, outside the salt-state criteria. But note the criteria are broad: original sale or ever registered in one of those states puts a vehicle in scope regardless of where it lives now.
At the shop — say this: "Please check this VIN against the rear suspension toe link recalls — 26V101, 21V537, 16V245, 19V435 and 20V675 — and tell me which apply and which have been completed."
2 · Front brakes — 30,000 to 70,000 miles
The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that stops under hard pressure — the wear indicator at roughly 3mm. Grinding is low, gritty and felt through the pedal.
What it actually is. Normal consumption on a heavy vehicle. Towing, hills and a full third row all shorten it.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A squeal only on the first two damp-morning stops is surface rust — free. Ask for pad thickness in millimetres; above 4mm you are buying time you already have.
Where this does not apply. Hybrid Explorers use regenerative braking for much of the deceleration, and pads last considerably longer than a conventional owner expects.
Fix it yourself — realistic. Front pads and rotors are a genuine driveway job on this vehicle: $140-$260 in parts, three hours, jack stands mandatory and rated for the weight. The honest limit: uneven wear side to side or a seized slide pin means a caliper — stop, because a dragging caliper destroys new parts within weeks.
At the shop — say this: "What's the actual pad thickness in millimetres front and rear, and are the rotors above minimum spec? If the pads are over 4 millimetres I'd rather wait."

On a three-row vehicle the noise is often further from you than it is on a sedan, and a rear clunk, a mid-vehicle whine and an engine rattle all reach the driver's seat sounding similar. 3 · Exhaust odour in the cabin — 40,000 to 120,000 miles (2011-2017)
The tell. Exhaust fumes entering the cabin, typically at full throttle — climbing a hill or merging onto a freeway. Some owners reported the effect being triggered by running the air conditioning in recirculation mode.
What NHTSA actually concluded, stated accurately. The agency reviewed more than 6,500 consumer complaints covering 2011-2017 Explorers including Police Interceptors, tested vehicles, took input from automotive, medical, environmental health and occupational safety experts, and closed the investigation in January 2023 without requiring a recall. Its conclusion was that these vehicles, when accurately measured, produce cabin carbon monoxide levels below current accepted health standards, and that it had not identified a defect representing an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety.
What the agency found instead — and this is the useful part. The highest measured levels came from sealing issues on police vehicles fitted with sirens, lights, cages and other equipment. Among consumer vehicles, the highest levels were usually traced to sealing issues caused by repairs after rear crash damage. Vehicles that had not been repaired, crashed, or fitted with police equipment did not release unsafe levels.
The honest framing. Complaints described nausea, headaches and lightheadedness, and roughly 660 injuries and three deaths were linked to the issue in complaint records. NHTSA also noted that hypersensitivities to carbon monoxide and other exhaust constituents exist within the population while stating that the agency does not set limits or determine the adequacy of established safe levels. Reasonable people read that differently, and this guide is not going to tell you the smell is imaginary.
The cheap causes, in the order the findings suggest. First, establish whether the vehicle has ever had rear-end collision repair — that is where consumer readings concentrated. Second, whether any aftermarket equipment was installed with holes through the body. Third, whether Ford's free inspection and sealing was ever performed. Ford's guidance to repairers included sealing the rear of the vehicle, recalibrating the air-conditioning system to draw more fresh air under heavy acceleration, and replacing damaged exhaust manifolds.
Where this does not apply. 2020 and newer Explorers are outside the investigated population entirely. And a genuinely damaged exhaust manifold is a real fault with its own repair, independent of the cabin-air question.
At the shop — say this: "I smell exhaust under hard acceleration. Has this vehicle ever had rear collision repair, was Ford's sealing inspection performed, and can you check the body seals and the exhaust manifold for damage?"
4 · Coolant loss with no external leak — 40,000 to 110,000 miles
The tell. The coolant reservoir level falls over weeks with nothing visible on the driveway. Later, oil on the dipstick that looks milky, foamy or coffee-coloured. Sometimes an overheat warning with no preceding drip.
What it actually is. On engine arrangements where the water pump sits inside the front cover and is driven by the timing chain, a failed pump seal sends coolant inward rather than outward. That removes the usual warning — a puddle — and replaces it with a slow contamination of the engine oil.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A cooling system pressure test, before anything. Fifteen minutes, and it distinguishes an external leak from a hose, a cap or a radiator — all far cheaper — from the internal case. A shop quoting an internal pump without a pressure test and an oil inspection is guessing at the expensive end.
The free check that matters most. Write down your coolant level and the date, then re-check in a week. A single reading proves nothing; a falling trend with a dry driveway is the whole diagnosis.
Where this does not apply. Not every Explorer engine uses an internal pump arrangement, and on those a coolant leak is an ordinary external repair at a fraction of this cost. Establish which engine you have before accepting the higher quote.
At the shop — say this: "Coolant is dropping with nothing on the driveway. Can you pressure-test the system, inspect the oil for contamination, and confirm whether this engine has an internal water pump before quoting?"
5 · Transmission rough shifting — 50,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. Harsh or delayed shifts, hesitation, occasionally limp mode. Sometimes a check-engine light with P0700 and no drivability complaint at all.
What it actually is. P0700 means the transmission control module logged its own fault and raised a flag. A basic code reader sees only the flag; the actual fault lives inside the transmission module.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Reading the sub-codes, plus fluid condition. If the estimate says only "P0700," nobody has diagnosed anything. Our guide to expensive codes covers this pattern across manufacturers.
The Explorer-specific accelerant. Towing. A vehicle that has pulled a trailer for 70,000 miles has a transmission with the thermal history of one that commuted for 130,000, and every interval in this guide should be shortened accordingly.
Where this does not apply. If the complaint is that the selector position does not match what the transmission is doing, that is a linkage question rather than an internal one, and it should be checked against open campaigns before any paid diagnosis.
At the shop — say this: "P0700 is a pointer code. What are the actual codes stored in the transmission module, and what's the fluid condition? I'd like both on the estimate before we discuss internal work."
Why has the Ford Explorer toe link recall been expanded so many times? Because the failure has two distinct causes that surfaced years apart, and each investigation pulled in a different population. The first campaign, NHTSA 16V245, covered 75,364 vehicles from a narrow 2014 build window where the toe links may have been improperly welded. The later and much larger 21V537 covered 644,055 vehicles from 2013 to 2017 and described corrosion instead: road salt causing the cross-axis ball joint to seize, fracturing the outboard section of the toe link. That campaign was itself an expansion of 16V245, 19V435 and 20V675, and in February 2026 it expanded again as 26V101 covering 412,774 vehicles from 2017 to 2019. The consequence for an owner is that a VIN which returned clear two years ago may return covered today. Pulscar cannot check recalls, but it can tell you whether the clunk warrants the trip.
6 · Power transfer unit on AWD models — 60,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. A whine, growl or drone that appears to come from under the middle of the vehicle rather than from a wheel, rising with road speed. Sometimes a burning smell after a long drive, or a small dark leak between the engine and the transmission area.
What it actually is. The power transfer unit sends drive to the front or rear axle on an all-wheel-drive vehicle. It runs hot, holds a small quantity of fluid, and sits where its temperature is influenced by the exhaust and the transmission. Fluid degradation is the usual precursor to failure.
The cheap cause that gets skipped — and it is the whole item. The fluid. A service runs $120-$250 and is the single most effective preventive action available to an AWD Explorer owner. It gets skipped because maintenance schedules give it little prominence and owners reasonably assume a sealed unit needs nothing.
How to tell it from a wheel bearing. A bearing hum changes when you steer gently left and right, because that shifts load between bearings. A power transfer unit whine does not care about steering input. That single test is free and it separates a $400 repair from a $2,000 one — the wheel bearing item below covers the other half.
Where this does not apply. Rear-wheel-drive Explorers have no power transfer unit and cannot produce this symptom.
At the shop — say this: "There's a whine from the middle of the vehicle that doesn't change when I steer. Can you check the power transfer unit fluid condition and level, and quote a fluid service before anything else?"
7 · Carbon buildup on intake valves — 60,000 to 130,000 miles
The tell. Gradual rough cold running, hesitation and mild power loss building over tens of thousands of miles. Sometimes misfire codes.
What it actually is. On direct injection, fuel sprays into the cylinder rather than past the intake valves, so the valves never get washed and oil vapour deposits build into carbon that disrupts airflow. A design consequence rather than a defect.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. Spark plugs, which produce overlapping symptoms at a fraction of the price. Then a borescope inspection so the deposits are photographed rather than assumed.
Where this does not apply. Port-injected engines wash their intake valves continuously and largely do not develop this.
At the shop — say this: "Before carbon cleaning, what's the plug condition, and can you borescope the intake valves and show me the photos? I'd like to see the deposits before paying to remove them."
8 · Wheel bearings and suspension — 70,000 to 140,000 miles
The tell. A hum from around 40-50 mph rising with road speed and changing when you steer gently — that steering sensitivity names the side and, just as importantly, distinguishes it from item 6.
What it actually is. Rolling elements wear and the assembly develops play. It worsens steadily and can eventually affect wheel-speed sensor readings and trigger ABS warnings.
The cheap cause that gets skipped. A worn or cupped tire produces nearly the same drone. Rotate and drive: if the noise moves, it is tires.
The free confirmation. With the vehicle safely supported, spin the wheel by hand listening for a gritty rumble, then rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock feeling for play.
Fix it yourself — the cheap half only. Sway bar end links, the usual cause of a clunk over bumps rather than a hum, are a genuine driveway job: $50-$110 in parts, two bolts per side, an hour. The honest limit: the hub bearing is not. On a vehicle this heavy the axle nut is torque-critical, the bolts are frequently seized on salted vehicles, and a hub fitted to the wrong torque fails early or damages the wheel-speed sensor you just paid for. Keep the links, hand over the hub.
Where this does not apply. If the noise does not change with steering, it is not a bearing — on an AWD vehicle look at item 6 instead.
At the shop — say this: "The hum changes when I steer, so I think a bearing rather than the power transfer unit — but can we rotate the tires first, and show me the play by hand?"
Did NHTSA find that Ford Explorers leak carbon monoxide into the cabin? The agency investigated for six years and concluded no recall was required, a more specific finding than either side of the argument usually reports. Preliminary evaluation PE16-008 opened in July 2016 and escalated to engineering analysis EA17-002 in July 2017, covering 2011-2017 vehicles and more than 6,500 complaints. On closing in January 2023, NHTSA stated these vehicles when accurately measured produce cabin carbon monoxide levels below current accepted health standards, and that it had not identified a defect representing an unreasonable risk. It attributed the highest readings to sealing issues on police vehicles fitted with sirens and cages, and among consumer vehicles to repairs performed after rear crash damage. For an owner that converts a vague worry into a specific question about repair history, which is a far more useful thing to walk into a workshop holding. Pulscar reads the noises that often accompany an exhaust leak.
9 · Air conditioning and electrical — 80,000 to 150,000 miles
The tell. Air that starts cold and fades warm, or never gets cold. On a three-row vehicle, rear vents failing while front vents work is a distinct and useful clue.
What it actually is. Refrigerant is not consumed, so a system that is low is a system that leaks. A three-row system has longer lines and more joints than a sedan's, which means more places to leak and a longer diagnosis.
The cheap causes. A failed relay gives no cold air with a healthy system. A blend door actuator produces a similar complaint from inside the dash. Rear-only failure often points at the rear lines or the rear expansion valve rather than the compressor.
Where this does not apply. On hybrid variants the compressor may be electrically driven, which changes both the failure modes and the diagnostic path.
At the shop — say this: "Was a leak test performed, and where exactly is it leaking? Front and rear both, or rear only? And can you check the relay before condemning the compressor?"
10 · Catalytic converter — 120,000 miles and up
The tell. A steady check-engine light with P0420, or P0430 for the second bank on a V6, often with no drivability symptom. Frequently the first sign is failing an emissions inspection.
What it actually is. The computer compares the oxygen sensors before and after the converter; when their readings converge, the code sets. That does not say the converter is broken.
The cheap causes, all three. A lazy downstream sensor ($180-$350 installed). A small exhaust leak upstream — and on this vehicle a damaged exhaust manifold is a documented possibility worth checking, given item 3. An unresolved misfire poisoning the substrate.
The one demand that changes the conversation: Mode 6. Mode $06 reports the catalyst monitor's actual test result as a number against threshold. Ask for those values in writing, and on a V6 ask for both banks, because a quote covering both when only one has failed doubles the bill.
Where this does not apply. If a misfire code is present alongside P0420, resolve the misfire first — replacing a converter while the thing that poisoned it is still running is money spent twice.
At the shop — say this: "Before we replace anything I want the Mode 6 catalyst values for both banks against threshold, the downstream sensors actually tested rather than assumed, and any exhaust leak or misfire resolved first."
The price ladder: read it from the bottom up
Read it from the bottom up. The top five lines are free, and one of them — a $120 fluid service — sits directly above a $2,200 line that it exists to prevent.
Your number, by which Explorer you drive
Two rows there invert the guide. A rear-wheel-drive owner deletes item 6 and one of the two largest bills on the ladder. And an owner whose vehicle has rear-end collision history should treat that single fact as the organising question for items 1 and 3 together — it is the common thread NHTSA identified and the thing most sellers do not volunteer.
Should you buy a used Explorer, and how to check in five minutes
Most people searching for Explorer problems are deciding whether to buy one, and on this vehicle the answer is unusually procedural.
Why the recall count is not the risk. Five toe link campaigns sounds alarming and is actually the opposite of a hidden problem: the defect is identified, the remedy is free, and completion is recorded against the VIN where anyone can verify it. What should worry a buyer is a fault with no campaign, no free remedy and no paper trail.
What genuinely carries uncovered risk. Ordinary high-mileage wear on a heavy vehicle — the internal water pump arrangement, the power transfer unit on AWD, transmission work — plus the specific question of crash history, which touches both the suspension and the cabin-air issue.
What the carbon monoxide finding actually means for a buyer. NHTSA closed the investigation without a recall, concluding measured levels in stock vehicles fall below accepted health standards, and traced the highest consumer readings to post-crash repair sealing. So the useful question is not "does this model have a CO problem" but "has this specific vehicle been rear-ended and repaired, and was Ford's free sealing inspection performed."
The five-minute pre-purchase procedure:
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and note every campaign, open and completed. Ask specifically about 26V101 and 21V537.
- Ask whether the vehicle has ever had rear-end collision repair. This is the single most informative question for this model.
- Check whether Ford's exhaust sealing inspection was performed on a 2011-2017 vehicle.
- Check the coolant level and ask about top-ups.
- Drive it at 40-50 mph and steer gently left and right, listening for a hum that changes — and one that does not.
- Look at rear tire wear on the inner edges.
The short version: an Explorer with completed campaigns, no crash history and a documented power transfer unit service is a normal used three-row SUV. One with outstanding campaigns and an unexplained repair history is a different vehicle, and the two look identical in a listing.
What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint
Checkpoint 1 — the VIN question, and the date of the last check. "What campaigns show open on this VIN today?" Today matters, because this vehicle's largest campaign has been expanded five times.
Checkpoint 2 — the crash question. "Does this vehicle show rear collision repair history?" It bears on two separate items in this guide.
Checkpoint 3 — the diagnostic fee. "What's the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer, usually credited.
Checkpoint 4 — the steering test. "Does the noise change when you steer?" On this vehicle that free question separates a $400 bearing from a $2,000 power transfer unit.
Checkpoint 5 — the evidence. "Can you show me?" Millimetres of pad, pressure test result, oil condition, borescope photos, Mode 6 values per bank.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Explorer owners the most
Trap 1: the recall nobody re-checked. The situation: a 2018 Explorer with a rear clunk, whose owner checked recalls in 2023 and found nothing. What the shop says: "Rear suspension bushings and links, about $900." What is really happening: campaign 26V101 was announced in February 2026 covering 2017-2019 vehicles, with the toe links replaced free of charge. A 2023 check would not have found it. Price versus bill: $0 against $900. Your protective question: "Can you re-run the VIN today — I understand there was a new expansion in February 2026."
Trap 2: the power transfer unit sold as a bearing, or the reverse. The situation: a whine at 45 mph on an AWD Explorer at 96,000 miles. What the shop says: "Wheel bearing, $550." What is really happening: a bearing hum changes when you steer gently; a power transfer unit whine does not. Getting it backwards means either a bearing that does not fix the noise, or a $2,000 unit quoted when a $400 bearing was the answer. Price versus bill: the wrong repair entirely, in either direction. Your protective question: "Does the noise change when I steer left and right? Let's drive it together and check."
Trap 3: the coolant top-up that hides an internal leak. The situation: coolant reservoir needing occasional topping up, no puddle, no warning light. What the shop says: "It's normal to lose a bit. We'll top it up." What is really happening: on engine arrangements with an internal water pump, the coolant is going into the engine rather than onto the ground, and the oil is where the evidence is. Price versus bill: a $60-$140 pressure test and an oil inspection, against an engine. Your protective question: "Can you pressure-test the system and inspect the oil for coolant contamination before we just top it up?"
Three quotes, decoded
These are composite scenarios, not individual customers — the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is presented as a specific person's story.
Scenario 1 — the free repair that appeared three years late. A 2018 Explorer with a rear clunk whose owner checked recalls once, in 2023, and reasonably concluded there was nothing outstanding. In February 2026 the campaign expanded to cover 2017-2019 vehicles with a free toe link replacement. The vehicle did not change; the campaign did. Lesson: on this model a recall check has a shelf life, and one year is about right.
Scenario 2 — the whine that was the wrong component. A whine at 45 mph on an AWD vehicle, quoted as a wheel bearing. The free discriminator is steering input: a bearing responds to it, a power transfer unit does not. Getting that backwards costs either an unnecessary part or a much larger one later. Lesson: one gentle steering input on a test drive is worth more than any parts catalogue.
Scenario 3 — the exhaust smell with a paper trail. An owner smelling exhaust under hard acceleration on a 2015 vehicle. NHTSA's closing findings pointed at post-crash repair sealing as the main source among consumer vehicles, which turns a vague complaint into a specific check: has this vehicle been rear-ended, and were the seals restored properly afterwards. Lesson: an investigation that closes without a recall can still hand you a better diagnostic question than you started with.
How can you tell a real Explorer failure from an unnecessary repair quote? Two free checks carry most of the weight. First, the recall check performed today rather than remembered from a previous year: the toe link campaign has been expanded five times since 2016, most recently in February 2026 covering 412,774 vehicles, and remedies are free with completion recorded against the VIN. Second, the steering test on any speed-related noise: a wheel bearing hum changes when you steer gently because that shifts load between bearings, while a power transfer unit whine ignores steering, and confusing the two is a four-figure error either way. Beyond those, ordinary discipline applies — a pressure test and oil inspection before any water pump quote, plugs and a borescope before carbon cleaning, sub-codes before rebuild talk, Mode 6 values per bank before a converter. Your situation right now: four playbooks
"There's a clunk from the rear." Run the VIN today, not from memory. If a toe link campaign applies, the remedy is free and the consequence NHTSA names is loss of steering control — this is not a comfort complaint.
"There's a whine at speed on an AWD vehicle." Do the steering test before you book anything. If the noise ignores steering input, ask for power transfer unit fluid condition rather than a bearing quote.
"Coolant is going down." Write the level and date on a note in the glovebox, re-check in seven days, and ask for a pressure test plus an oil inspection. Do not accept a top-up as a diagnosis.
"Nothing's wrong, I just bought it." Run the VIN lookup and schedule anything open. Book the power transfer unit fluid if it is AWD and there is no record. Write down the coolant level. Set a calendar reminder to re-run the recall check every year — on this vehicle that habit has a documented payoff.
After the repair: verify, then prevent
Verify within a week. Recall work: get completion documented against the VIN in writing. Bearing or power transfer unit: the noise gone at the speed where it lived, confirmed with the same steering test. Cooling: level stable across three weeks and clean oil on the dipstick. Converter: light stays off through two full drive cycles.
Re-run the recall lookup annually. This is the Explorer-specific habit. Five expansions in ten years is the evidence for it.
Record the before and after. Thirty seconds from the same position is the cheapest proof of repair that exists, and the strongest position you can hold if the noise returns inside a parts warranty. The recording guide has the protocol.
Prevent the next one. Power transfer unit fluid every 40,000-60,000 miles on AWD. Transmission fluid on a real interval, halved if you tow. Coolant level checked monthly and written down. Those three lines address the two largest uncovered bills in this guide.

- NHTSA recall 16V-245 / Ford campaign 16S18 — acknowledgement letter dated 11 May 2016. Certain 2014-2015 Explorer vehicles manufactured 17 January 2014 to 31 May 2014; improperly welded rear suspension toe links that may fracture. 75,364 units. Acknowledgement letter on NHTSA
- NHTSA preliminary evaluation PE16-008 — opened 1 July 2016 into exhaust odour and carbon monoxide concerns in Ford Explorer vehicles.
- NHTSA engineering analysis EA17-002 — opened 27 July 2017, escalating the above; covered 2011-2017 Explorer including Police Interceptor, more than 6,500 consumer complaints, approximately 1.47 million vehicles. Closed January 2023 with no recall required. Closing conclusion: the 2011-2017 Explorer vehicles when accurately measured produce cabin carbon monoxide levels which fall below current accepted health standards, and no defect representing an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety was identified. The agency attributed the highest measured levels to sealing issues from installation of sirens, lights and cages on police vehicles, and among consumer vehicles to sealing issues caused by repairs after rear crash damage.
- Ford field service campaign, 2017 — free inspection and repair to reduce the potential for exhaust to enter the vehicle, offered regardless of mileage or warranty status; repair guidance included sealing the rear of the vehicle, recalibrating the air-conditioning system to draw more fresh air under heavy acceleration, and replacing damaged exhaust manifolds.
