Three Honda Odyssey recalls mailed owner letters in 2026, the most recent on 24 August, and two federal investigations that name the Odyssey are still open. That combination is unusual: most guides like this one are archaeology, and this one is a to-do list. It covers the fifth generation, 2018 to 2026, with the 3.5-litre J35 V6, not the 2011-2017 van.

NHTSA 26V-423 reaches 325,588 vans, 26V-227 reaches 440,830, and 26V-332 reaches 9,408 Odysseys out of 98,892 vehicles. All three are free. Meanwhile PE25008 is open on connecting rod bearing failure and EA25004 on an engine that will not restart after Auto Idle Stop.

By the end you will know which of the ten failures is due at your mileage, what each costs in 2026, which claims rest on a document you can open yourself, and which items have no document at all. How to use this guide

Start with the VIN, not the symptom. The recall lookup beats any diagnostic here, because three campaigns are live and two replace parts a dealer would otherwise quote at four figures. Every entry has the same parts: the tell, what it actually is, the cheap cause that gets skipped, where this does not apply, and the sentence to say at the counter.

One rule overrides everything: the mileage in each heading is when the part starts talking, not when it breaks โ€” and on this van the recalls are defined by build date, not model year. Recall 23V-751 is the clearest case. Its Odyssey entry covers 2018-2019 vans built between 9 April 2018 and 28 August 2018. Two vans on the same forecourt, same model year, same mileage, can sit on opposite sides of that line. And two of the ten are not failures at all: brakes (item 5) and the timing belt (item 10) are scheduled work โ€” expensive at the wrong moment, but not evidence anything went wrong. Nor can mileage tell you what you most want to know: a 145,000-mile van with a full history and every campaign closed beats an 88,000-mile van with neither. The paperwork ranks these vans; the odometer does not.

First: which Odyssey do you actually have?

2018-2020, the first three years. The heaviest years in every sense: 2,374 of the 3,172 NHTSA complaints filed against 2018-2025 Odysseys. These vans sit inside the sliding door campaigns (18V-795, 20V-437), the camera campaigns (20V-438, 20V-439, 26V-423), the fuel pump recall (23V-858), the buckle recall (23V-158) and, for one build window, the engine recall (23V-751).

2018-2019, by trim. Honda fitted the ZF nine-speed to LX, EX and EX-L in these two years while Touring and Elite got the ten-speed and Auto Idle Stop; from 2020 both are standard. If your van has the nine-speed, item 6 is a different conversation, and if it never shuts the engine off at a light, item 3 does not apply to you at all.

2021-2026. Outside 23V-751, 23V-858, 26V-423 and both sliding door campaigns. Still inside 26V-332, whose Odyssey entry runs 2018-2026, and up to 2022 inside 26V-227. The 2023-2024 vans have a campaign nobody else has: 24V-114, covering 186 vehicles in total.

The seven-minute check that dates your Odyssey better than the odometer

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and write down every campaign, open and completed. If any shows open, book it.
  2. Read the build date on the door jamb sticker. Compare it against the windows in items 1, 8 and 9. Model year is not the test.
  3. Note the trim and count the gears. Nine-speed or ten-speed changes item 6; Auto Idle Stop decides whether item 3 exists on your van.
  4. Put it in reverse in daylight and look at the camera image. A blank screen or a "network connection lost" message is item 2, and 2018-2020 vans have a free remedy.
  5. Start the engine and photograph the dash before any warning clears. Four or five Honda Sensing messages together is item 7, and the cluster is the diagnosis.
  6. Open and close both sliding doors ten times from the outside handle. A door that sticks or fails to seat is item 1, and both campaigns are free.
  7. Sit at one long red light with Auto Idle Stop active. A restart that hesitates or needs a shift to Park is item 3, and it belongs in an EA25004 complaint.

"It shifted itself into Park while moving." โ†’ Item 6, whose recall starts at a weak 12-volt battery.

What actually determines your number

Whether the VIN falls inside a live campaign. Larger than mileage, larger than trim: three campaigns mailed letters in 2026, each replacing a part that otherwise lands on an invoice at four figures.

The build date, not the model year. The engine recall's Odyssey window is under five months; the camera recall's is three and a half years. Two documents, two definitions of one van.

Which model years you own. 2018 and 2019 alone account for 1,916 of the 3,172 complaints in our sample: partly age, partly launch defects.

Whether a part has a document behind it at all. Item 7 is the most-complained-about failure here, with no recall, no investigation and no warranty extension. Item 1 has two recalls. Same van, different bargaining position.

Independent versus dealer. Typically 30-50% on labour-heavy work, but recalls must go to a Honda dealer and the camera needs a calibration most independents cannot do. The comparison maps which jobs go where.

Climate, for one item only. The sliding door cable recall is explicitly about water freezing inside a cable. Nothing else here is a cold-state item.

The tell. The door reverses on its own, seats against the striker and pops back, or reads closed on the dash and is not. In the cold version the outside handle feels stiff after the first freeze. 183 complaints in our sample name a sliding or power door.

What it actually is. Two defects, one complaint. 18V-795 describes the latch: components "prone to sticking" that "can restrict the front and rear latches from securely latching to the door strikers." It covers 107,774 vans, and "All vehicles built from production start-up through April 16, 2018 are affected." 20V-437 describes the cable: moisture that "can freeze in low ambient temperature conditions, causing the outer door handle cable to stick in the open position," across 324,194 vans built before 20 July 2020.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Checking which campaign was done, not whether one was. A van that had the latch replaced in 2019 and failed again is the case that created the second recall: Honda's chronology records a van "exhibiting similar symptoms even after the recall remedy for NHTSA Recall ID 18V-795 was performed." "The door recall is done" is not an answer.

Fix it yourself โ€” the observation, not the repair. Work both doors ten times from the outside handle and note whether the failure is at the handle (stiff, does not return) or at the striker (seats and reverses). Repeat after a cold night: that tells you which campaign to name. The honest limit: the door itself, where a spring-loaded mechanism, a powerful motor and a loom under the trim panel are not a driveway job.

Where this does not apply. A 2021 or later van is outside both campaigns, so the same complaint is a repair at your expense. A door that will not open at all, rather than one that will not latch, is usually a motor or a roller.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Check this VIN against both 18V-795 and 20V-437, and tell me which has been performed and on what date. If only the latch was done, I want the cables checked."

The tell. The reversing image is blank, milky, frozen or replaced by a message owners quote often enough to recognise: "Network Connection Lost." On the MOST version the radio, screen and camera fail together.

The part that has now been replaced twice. 26V-423 states that "Water can enter the rearview camera assembly and cause the printed circuit board (PCB) to corrode," and that its population "includes: (1) vehicles previously recalled under NHTSA Campaign No. 20V-438," whose redesigned Magna cameras "will be replaced by Sony rearview cameras for this remedy." If a dealer replaced your camera under 20V-438 and it failed again, you are inside the new campaign, not outside it. The MOST version is a different fault on the same screen: 23V-431 describes a coaxial cable connector, and losing that network for more than 20 seconds kills the image.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The VIN lookup, free, on a campaign whose letters went out 24 August 2026. A second owner who bought in 2024 is not on that mailing list. Honda recorded 1,648 warranty claims on cameras it had already replaced once, and 23V-431 records "273,870 warranty claims related to the issue" between May 2017 and June 2023.

Where this does not apply. 26V-423 stops at 22 July 2020, so a 2021 van with a blank camera is outside it. 20V-439 excluded base LX and Sport trims because "the instrument panels in these vehicles do not use the same type of network system."

At the shop โ€” say this: "Check this VIN against 26V-423 and 23V-431. If a camera was already replaced under 20V-438, put that on the order โ€” 26V-423 covers vehicles previously recalled under it."

The tell. The engine shuts off at a red light as designed, you lift off the brake, and nothing happens. Owners describe shifting to Park and pressing the start button, and in the worst reports a jump start. 237 complaints in our sample describe this, in 2024 and 2025 vans as much as in 2018 ones.

Read the two lists separately, because reporting on this case merges them. EA25004's resume names Honda bulletins 23-008 and 23-009 and the vehicles they address: 2016-2019 Pilot, 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2019-2022 Passport, 2020-2023 Ridgeline. The Odyssey is not in that bulletin list. The investigation's own product list is separate and reads "2018-2025 Honda Odyssey," because NHTSA is expanding the scope to "newer model year vehicles, which are substantially similar." The resume also records the ten-year unlimited-mileage extension Honda gave for the second stage of that bulletin repair โ€” but it attaches to the bulletin, and the bulletins do not name the Odyssey.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The 12-volt battery and its terminals, load-tested, before anyone opens a starter. Auto Idle Stop decides whether to cut the engine based on electrical state, and a battery that passes a voltage check can fail a load test. Then file the complaint: EA25004 runs on owner reports, and its 1,348 incidents are why the case was upgraded from a preliminary evaluation.

Where this does not apply. A van without Auto Idle Stop cannot have this failure: it came with the ten-speed on Touring and Elite, and became standard from 2020. A no-start from cold in the driveway is a different fault โ€” start here instead.

At the shop โ€” say this: "The engine failed to restart after Auto Idle Stop cut it. Load-test the battery, print the result, and record the event in the file."

The tell. For 26V-227 there is one, and it is violent: side airbags going off with no crash, over a pothole or a speed bump. For the other two there is none โ€” a shorted seat sensor and a jammed buckle button fail silently and only matter in a crash.

What it actually is. 26V-227 is a software threshold problem: the SRS control unit "contains incorrect deployment parameters for the side and side curtain airbags, which may cause inadvertent deployment when the vehicle encounters strong road impacts, such as driving over potholes, speed bumps, or road debris." 26V-332 is physical: "A capacitor in the printed circuit board of the front passenger seat weight sensor may crack and lead to an internal short circuit." 23V-158 is mechanical: a buckle channel interfering with the release button.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Nothing here has one, which is the point: the entire cost of this item is a lookup you have not done. Honda's filing for 26V-227 records "130 warranty claims, 25 reports of an injury, and no reports of death related to this issue from January 24, 2017 โ€“ April 2, 2026," and NHTSA opened PE25018 into these deployments before closing it once the recall was filed.

Where this does not apply. A 2023 or later van is outside 26V-227, and only 9,408 Odysseys sit in 26V-332, so a clean lookup here is a real answer. An airbag warning light is not this item; it is a fault the system has already detected.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Check this VIN against 26V-227, 26V-332 and 23V-158, and give me completion dates in writing."

Which Honda Odyssey recalls are open on my van right now, and what does each one actually pay for? Three campaigns mailed owner letters during 2026 and every remedy is free of charge. Recall 26V-423 covers 325,588 model year 2018 to 2020 vans and replaces the rearview camera, and its letters went out on 24 August 2026. Recall 26V-227 covers 440,830 model year 2018 to 2022 vans and reprograms or replaces the airbag control unit, with letters mailed on 27 May 2026. Recall 26V-332 covers 98,892 vehicles across the Honda and Acura range, of which 9,408 are Odysseys, and replaces the front passenger seat weight sensor. The tell. A thin high squeal at low speed that goes quiet under hard pressure is the wear indicator at roughly 3 mm. Grinding is different: low, gritty, felt through the pedal. A shudder at speed is a third thing; 31 complaints in our sample describe braking with vibration or pulsation.

What it actually is. Ordinary consumption accelerated by mass; school-run duty is the hardest brake cycle there is. The one document here is recall 18V-777, for rear brake caliper pistons with insufficient coating on 2018-2019 vans, an FMVSS 135 noncompliance. The remedy was to bleed the brakes โ€” worth knowing, because "there was a brake recall" does not mean anyone replaced anything. The braking noise guide separates the squeal you can wait on from the grind you cannot.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A squeal on only the first two stops of a damp morning is surface rust on the rotor face and costs nothing. Ask for pad thickness in millimetres first: above 4 mm you are buying time you already own. A pedal shudder is often rotor thickness variation, which a shop can measure rather than guess at.

Fix it yourself โ€” the measurement, not the job. Most Odyssey wheels let you see the outer pad through the spokes. Take a torch, compare left to right, and write the reading down with the date: two dated readings turn "you need brakes" into a rate of wear. The honest limit: the caliper, where a mishandled parking brake actuator gives you a brake that works until it does not.

Where this does not apply. A van on flat roads with two occupants reaches the far end of every interval here; one towing in hills will not reach the near end. A brake light with no noise is a fluid or electrical question โ€” the dashboard guide covers it.

The tell. Two of them. The documented one is a transmission that goes to Park by itself, or a van that will not hold on a slope. The undocumented one is a jerk or shudder on light throttle, most often on the nine-speed. 105 complaints in our sample name the transmission alongside a jerk, shudder, hesitation, harsh shift or slip.

What it actually is. Recall 19V-299 writes out the whole chain: "Loose battery terminal connections or a degraded battery can result in low voltage conditions, causing the TCU to reboot. Upon reboot, the TCU software is designed to shift the transmission to Park. If the TCU reboots while the vehicle is underway, the transmission will engage/attempt to engage Park, which may damage the parking rod adjacent to the parking pawl."

The cheap cause that gets skipped. A $200 battery and a torque wrench on two terminals. This is the clearest cheap-cause chain in the guide because Honda wrote it down: a degraded battery causes a reboot, the reboot damages a parking rod, and the parking rod is inside a transmission. Where this does not apply. 19V-299 stops at the 2019 model year. 2018 and 2019 LX, EX and EX-L vans have the ZF nine-speed while Touring and Elite have the ten-speed, so "the known nine-speed problem" applies to half the fleet at most. A 2021 van that shudders is in no campaign we could find.

The tell. Several warnings at once, and owners quote the exact set: "Collision Mitigation System Problem," "Road Departure Mitigation System Problem," "Lane Keeping Assist System Problem," "Adaptive Cruise Control Problem," "Auto High Beam Problem." They clear on an ignition cycle and come back. That clustering is why a naive count of "high beam" complaints here returns 129 results with nothing to do with headlights.

What it actually is, and what we could not find. One sensor feeds many features: the monocular camera behind the mirror, which every forward-looking Honda Sensing function reads from. When it fails, each dependent function reports separately, so one part produces five messages and the impression of a catastrophic electrical fault. No NHTSA recall covers this camera on the Odyssey, no investigation names it, and no Honda warranty extension appeared in the documents we opened. A putative class action, Jones et al. v. American Honda Motor Co., No. 2:26-cv-06222, was filed on 8 June 2026 naming 2018-2025 Odysseys; we did not open the docket, so no terms from it appear here, and a filed complaint is an allegation, not a finding.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The 12-volt battery, again, and the fault code. Several complaints describe the whole warning set appearing alongside a failed battery load test, and a low-voltage event throws communication faults across every module on the network. Ask whether the stored code is a camera fault or a communication fault: they look identical on the dash and are an order of magnitude apart on the invoice. The 119 owner figures we parsed put the repair at a median near $2,000, at mileages clustering around 53,500.

Fix it yourself โ€” the evidence, not the repair. Photograph the full dash the moment the warnings appear, with every message visible, and note the date and the outside temperature. Do that three times. A pattern that appears only above a certain temperature is the difference between "could not duplicate" and a documented condition. The honest limit: the calibration, which needs a static and dynamic aiming procedure with target boards.

Where this does not apply. A van without Honda Sensing has none of this, and a single warning points at that system rather than the shared camera. A windshield replaced without recalibration produces the same messages for a different reason.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Which codes are stored, and is this a camera fault or a network fault? Load-test the battery first, and quote the camera and calibration separately."

How do you tell a Honda Sensing camera failure from a cheap electrical fault on an Odyssey? Ask two questions before anyone quotes a part. First, has the 12-volt battery been load-tested and the result printed, because a low-voltage event can throw communication faults across every module and produce the same cluster of dashboard messages. Second, which exact diagnostic trouble code is stored, because a camera fault and a network fault look identical on the dash and are an order of magnitude apart on the invoice. Owner-reported figures for the camera repair on this van cluster near $2,000, with the middle half running $1,500 to $2,200 across the 119 figures we could parse, and there is no recall behind any of it. Record thirty seconds of the engine at the same time and Pulscar will tell you whether a mechanical noise is riding along with the electrical fault.

The tell. Hesitation under load, a stumble pulling away, then a stall, often with no warning light first. Some owners report a rattle from the rear under acceleration. 107 complaints in our sample name a fuel pump, concentrated in 2018 and 2019 vans, at mileages around 70,000.

What it actually is, and the scope trap inside it. The recall's words: "The fuel pump impeller was improperly moulded, resulting in low density," and if the module stops working "the engine may not start or can stall." Honda recorded 4,042 warranty claims by December 2023. Now the trap: the campaign summary reads "certain 2013-2023 Honda Accord, Civic... Odyssey," as though every Odyssey to 2023 is covered. Open the Part 573 report and the Odyssey row is Vehicle 17: 2018-2020, production 4 November 2017 to 4 October 2019. A 2022 van is not in this recall.

Where this does not apply. 2021 and later vans are outside this recall, and so are vans built after 4 October 2019 even in the 2020 model year. A stall only after Auto Idle Stop has cut the engine is item 3, not this one.

The tell. A deep knock that grows with load, not a light top-end tick, and often nothing else. Honda's warning list is "Abnormal engine noise, engine stalling, and/or decreased engine output with engine check lamp illumination." The knocking guide separates bearing sounds from the cheaper families. In our sample 114 complaints describe a rod bearing or an engine that failed, seized or blew, at mileages clustering around 90,000.

The scope, exactly as the document gives it, and this is the whole item. 23V-751 gives the mechanism in one sentence โ€” "Due to a manufacturing defect of the engine crankshaft, the connecting rod bearing can prematurely wear and seize" โ€” and covers 248,999 vehicles across seven entries. The Odyssey one is 2018-2019 built 9 April 2018 to 28 August 2018. Under five months. Remedy: "The dealer will inspect and, if necessary, repair or replace the engine," and unlike the sliding door recall this one reimburses owners who already paid.

What happens if your build date falls outside it. NHTSA opened Recall Query RQ24013 in November 2024 to test whether Honda's scope was wide enough, and closed it on 20 August 2025 in Honda's favour: "ODI has determined that Honda has properly defined the scope of recall 23V-751." The same day it opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25008 on the out-of-scope failures, naming MY2018-2020 Honda Odyssey and citing 414 owner reports. It is open.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Reading the door jamb before accepting anyone's answer. A knock a shop calls "normal direct injection noise" and a knock a recall lists in its own symptom set are not distinguishable by opinion, and the free step is a date on a sticker. If the van is outside the window, a complaint filed with NHTSA becomes part of the record PE25008 will be decided on.

Where this does not apply. 2021 and later vans are outside both 23V-751 and PE25008, whose Odyssey scope stops at 2020. A knock that disappears under load is more often an accessory or a heat shield. And a complaint mentioning both a knock and a long oil interval is one report with two facts in it, not proof that one caused the other.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Here is the build date from the door jamb. Check this VIN against 23V-751 and tell me whether it falls inside the 9 April to 28 August 2018 window. If not, I want the diagnosis in writing."

Does the Odyssey engine recall cover my van, and what happens if it does not? Recall 23V-751 covers 248,999 Honda and Acura vehicles, but its Odyssey entry is limited to 2018 and 2019 vans built between 9 April and 28 August 2018, a window of under five months, so the door jamb build date decides the answer rather than the model year. Inside that window the remedy is free: the dealer inspects and, if necessary, repairs or replaces the engine, and owners who already paid can seek reimbursement. Outside it, NHTSA closed Recall Query RQ24013 on 20 August 2025 finding that Honda had defined the scope properly, and opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25008 the same day for the remaining failures. The tell. For the recall, none you can rely on: teeth separating from a belt give you a stall, not a warning. For the scheduled item the tell is a Maintenance Minder code, and owners report code 4 appearing around 105,000 miles. A squeal from the front of the engine is more often the accessory belt.

What it actually is. Recall 19V-298 covers a manufacturing batch: "The teeth on an improperly hardened timing belt are susceptible to separation," across 93,946 vehicles, of which the Odyssey entry is model year 2019 only. Everything after that is maintenance: the J35 drives its camshafts with a rubber belt, and the water pump runs off the same belt.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Doing the water pump, tensioner and idler at the same time as the belt. The belt rarely fails on schedule; what fails is a seized pump or tensioner that takes the belt with it, and paying the same labour twice is the expensive version. Where this does not apply. The recall applies to 2019 vans inside a build window and nobody else, and the interval is not a defect. Check the Maintenance Minder and the manual rather than a generic mileage number: Honda's schedule is condition-based.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Is the water pump, tensioner and idler included in this quote, and what is the labour if I come back for the pump separately? Was 19V-298 performed on this VIN?"

Two rows invert the guide rather than refine it. A van built between 9 April and 28 August 2018 is the only Odyssey where the most expensive possible failure is currently the cheapest thing on the list, because Honda pays for it โ€” and a van built a week later, identical otherwise, sits inside an open investigation with no remedy attached. A van without Honda Sensing deletes item 7, the one entry with no document and a median owner bill near $2,000.

Best and worst Odyssey years to buy, and what the lists get wrong

Search for Odyssey years to avoid and the answer is consistent: skip 1999-2004 for the transmissions, treat 2005-2007 carefully for oil use, buy 2011-2013 or 2018-2022, and expect 2018 and 2019 to rank weakest of the current generation. None of it is wrong. It is built from complaint volume and survey scores, and both are poor proxies for what a repair costs you.

What the complaint counts actually say. In NHTSA's public database, pulled on 6 September 2026, 2018-2025 Odysseys carry 3,172 complaints: 974 on 2018, 942 on 2019, 458 on 2020, then 139, 130, 97 and 95 for 2021 through 2024, and 337 on 2025. The lists are right that 2018 and 2019 are the noisy years. They miss that the noise sits in a few named systems with named campaigns behind them, and that a 2018 van with its campaigns closed out is in a different position from one whose owner never opened the mail.

Where the lists mislead. They are written by model year, and the three most expensive facts here are not model year facts: the engine recall is a five-month build window, the fuel pump recall stops mid-year on 4 October 2019, and the camera recall includes vans whose part was already replaced once. A years-to-avoid list flattens a VIN question into a calendar answer.

And they under-weight the item with no document at all. None lead with the Honda Sensing camera: 408 complaints in our sample, no recall, no warranty extension, owner-reported median near $2,000. On a used 2019 van at 60,000 miles that is the most likely four-figure bill of your first two years, and no recall-based ranking sees it.

The honest ranking, by what it costs you.

  • Best position: a 2021 or later van โ€” outside the engine, fuel pump, camera and door campaigns, with two live ones to check.
  • Often better value: a 2018-2020 van whose 26V-423 camera and door campaigns are closed. Honda has already paid for the expensive known items.
  • Buy with the door jamb photographed: a 2018 or 2019 van. The build date decides whether the engine question is a free inspection or an open investigation, and the seller will not know it.
  • Uncovered risk, ranked: the camera first, median near $2,000 with no document behind it; then engine failure outside the 23V-751 window, $6,400 to $10,000 in owner quotes.

What to check on the test drive. Run the seven-minute check above on the forecourt, in that order โ€” ten minutes, no cost, a better filter than any model year list. What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 โ€” the VIN question. "What campaigns show open on this VIN, and specifically 26V-423, 26V-227 and 26V-332?" All three mailed letters in 2026, all free.

Checkpoint 2 โ€” the build date question. "What is the production date on the door jamb, and does it fall inside the 23V-751 window?" This separates a free engine inspection from an open investigation.

Checkpoint 3 โ€” the diagnostic fee. "What is the charge, and does it credit toward the repair?" Expect $80-$150 independent, $120-$200 dealer. What a diagnostic should cost has the detail.

Checkpoint 4 โ€” the code question. "Which exact codes are stored, and is this a camera fault or a communication fault?" On item 7 this is the difference between a battery and a $2,000 camera with calibration.

Checkpoint 5 โ€” the battery question. "Has the battery been load-tested, and can I have the printout?" Recall 19V-299 starts its causal chain at a degraded battery.

Checkpoint 6 โ€” the authorisation ceiling. "Call me before anything over this figure." The dispute guide covers what to do when that is ignored.

Three diagnostic traps that cost Odyssey owners the most

Trap 1: the knock that was a date on a sticker. The situation: a 2018 Odyssey at 88,000 miles with a deep knock that grows under load. What the shop says: "These 3.5 engines get noisy. Try a thicker oil, and if it gets worse we can look at a rebuild." What is really happening: recall 23V-751's own warning list is "Abnormal engine noise, engine stalling, and/or decreased engine output with engine check lamp illumination." Whether it is free depends on whether the build date sits between 9 April and 28 August 2018, and no amount of listening establishes that. Price versus bill: $0 inside the window, where the remedy is to "inspect and, if necessary, repair or replace the engine," against $6,400 to $10,000 in owner-quoted figures from our sample. Your protective question: "Before we discuss oil, what is the door jamb build date, and does this VIN fall inside recall 23V-751?"

Trap 2: the camera quoted before the battery was tested. The situation: a 2019 Odyssey at 62,000 miles that lit five Honda Sensing warnings at once on a hot afternoon. What the shop says: "That is the front camera. They all go. It is about two thousand with the calibration." What is really happening: the camera does fail on this van, often. But a low-voltage event produces communication faults across every module and puts the same cluster of messages on the same dash. They read identically from the driver's seat. Price versus bill: roughly $200 for a battery against a median of about $2,000 for the camera and calibration across the 119 owner figures we parsed. Your protective question: "Which exact code is stored, is it a camera fault or a network fault, and can I see the battery load test result first?"

Trap 3: the recall summary that promised the wrong years. The situation: the owner of a 2022 Odyssey reads that 23V-858 covers "2013-2023 Honda ... Odyssey" and books a free fuel pump replacement. What the shop says: "Nothing open on your VIN." What is really happening: recall summaries list the whole affected range across every model in the campaign, not the range for your model. Open the Part 573 report and the Odyssey row is Vehicle 17, 2018-2020, built 4 November 2017 to 4 October 2019. The trap runs the other way on 26V-423, whose population includes vans previously recalled under 20V-438. Price versus bill: an afternoon wasted one way; the other way, a free camera replacement declined because an earlier repair looked final. Your protective question: "Which recall number applies to my VIN specifically, and what does its own report say the remedy is?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers โ€” the mileages, quotes and outcomes are typical of the pattern each item describes, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials, so nothing below is a specific person's story.

Scenario 1 โ€” the knock that was a paperwork question. Take a 2018 van at around 90,000 miles with a load-related knock, near the median of the engine-failure complaints we could read. Photograph the door jamb and ask for the 23V-751 check first: the van is either inside the 9 April to 28 August 2018 window or outside it. Inside, the dealer inspects and where necessary replaces the engine free, and past out-of-pocket work is reimbursable. Outside, a federal Preliminary Evaluation is open on exactly that situation. Lesson: on this van the free step is not a shortcut past diagnosis โ€” it is the diagnosis, and it lives on a sticker in the door frame.

Scenario 2 โ€” one dash, two bills. Take a 2019 van at 60,000 miles that lights the whole Honda Sensing cluster on a hot day. Ask for a battery load test and the stored code first: a communication fault traced to low voltage is a battery near $200, while a camera fault runs to an owner-reported median of about $2,000 once calibration is included. Skip the questions and you buy the top of that range on the strength of five messages one sensor can generate alone. Lesson: five warnings do not mean five faults, and the cheapest test here is the one that tells you which.

Scenario 3 โ€” the door that was recalled twice. Take a 2018 van whose sliding door will not latch after the first frost. Ask which campaigns have been performed and the answer is often that 18V-795 was done years ago, which sounds final. It is not: Honda's chronology for 20V-437 begins with a dealer reporting a van "exhibiting similar symptoms even after the recall remedy for NHTSA Recall ID 18V-795 was performed," and the second campaign replaces the cables, not the latches. Lesson: one completed recall is not evidence the symptom is covered โ€” these campaigns overlap by symptom and differ by part.

Your situation right now: four playbooks

"2018-2020 van, no symptoms at all." Run the VIN today against 26V-423, 26V-227, 26V-332, 23V-858, 20V-437 and 18V-795, and photograph the door jamb build date against the 23V-751 window. The highest-value half hour you will spend on this van all year.

"Every Honda Sensing warning came on." Do not authorise a camera yet. Get the battery load-tested with a printed result and the stored code on the order. If it is the camera, you have lost nothing; if it is voltage, you have saved about $1,800.

"It stopped at a light and would not restart." Load-test the battery, then file an NHTSA complaint: EA25004 is open and runs on owner reports.

"Just bought it and nothing is wrong." Run the VIN, photograph the door jamb, and bank a thirty-second recording while the engine is healthy.

After the repair: verify, then prevent

Verify within a week. Recall work: completion documented against the VIN, campaign number on the invoice. Camera: the reversing image sharp at night as well as daylight, because water intrusion shows first in low light. Doors: ten cycles from the outside handle after the first cold night.

Keep the paperwork that proves scope. A recall invoice should name the campaign number, and a camera should come with its calibration sheet โ€” one fitted without a documented aim is a repair you will argue about later.

Photograph the door jamb once. The build date is the most-used fact here, and the hardest to get when the van is at a shop across town.

Record the before and after. Thirty seconds from the same position is the cheapest proof of repair that exists. The recording guide has the protocol and our analysis of noise words in NHTSA complaints shows which ones precede an expensive repair.

Prevent the next one. A recall lookup once a year, a battery load test at every service after year four, and a door-handle cycle at the first frost โ€” 26V-423 landed six years after the recall it expands.

What we looked for and did not find. There is no NHTSA recall, no NHTSA investigation and no Honda warranty extension covering the Honda Sensing monocular camera on the Odyssey that we could locate. We read NHTSA's investigation records rather than trusting a search: the only entries naming the Odyssey and still open are PE25008 and EA25004, plus a defect petition opened on 13 July 2026 concerning 2011-2017 vans. Methodology. Document numbers, populations, production windows and defect wording were taken from the Part 573 reports and ODI investigation resumes themselves, downloaded from NHTSA's document server and read as text. Owner-reported figures come from NHTSA's public complaints database for the Odyssey across model years 2018 to 2025, pulled on 6 September 2026: 3,172 complaints, of which 60 carry a crash or fire flag. Topic counts were produced with our own narrow regular expressions run against the complaint summary text and spot-checked by reading samples; a broad "high beam" match returned 129 complaints that turned out to be the Honda Sensing warning cluster rather than headlight failures, which is why every count here is described by what it matched. Complaint text is an owner's account, not an audited invoice. Prices are US ranges; dealer pricing typically runs 30-50% higher. Recall eligibility depends on your VIN and build date.
