๐Ÿšจ 60-Second Triage โ€” 2012-2018 Ford Focus with P0441 or any purge code: run the VIN before you pay anyone. Three recalls and one free 15-year program cover this exact part. Stalls or will not restart right after a fill-up: a valve behaving as though stuck open; book it this week and stop topping off. Fuel gauge reading oddly, or a hollow bang from the tank: vacuum may be pulling the tank out of shape; drive it in now, tank at least half full. Steady light, engine smooth, P0441 alone: you have time โ€” do not buy a valve this week. Light flashing: that is a misfire, not a purge fault.

At least 74% are software updates, but 65 of the 82 are Stellantis; strip that group out and only 17 bulletins remain, 7 of them software, which is why we do not treat the software share as a general finding. Only 28 owner complaints name the code at all, median 72,500 miles, and the code most often named beside it is P0171, not a leak code. See the index, method and data โ†’

P0441 is a verdict on a measurement, not on a part. The computer told the purge valve to open by a certain amount, measured what flowed out of the charcoal canister, and decided the two numbers did not agree.

That narrowness is why the code behaves strangely in the public record. It is one of the two rarest in our index by owner complaints โ€” 28 reports name it โ€” yet the component behind it generates 1,593 federal complaints, and four of America's largest manufacturers have never printed the code in a single bulletin.

How to use this guide

Every route is defined by when the fault appears and what else the car is doing, not by the code. One rule overrides everything: a flow code is a question about the whole vapor path, not a receipt for a valve. Volvo wrote the short version into a 2026 technical journal: "Do not start by replacing parts."

Leak codes and flow codes are different tests. P0442, P0455 and P0456 come from sealing the system and watching pressure; P0441 comes from commanding the valve and measuring what moved. A leak code sends you hunting for a hole, a flow code to the valve, the hose and the calibration.

The company it keeps is revealing. In the Check Engine Code Index, the code most often named alongside P0441 in owner complaints is P0171, system too lean โ€” not a leak code. A valve stuck open dumps extra vapor into the intake and the fuel trims move; our P0171 guide covers that half. And Honda writes the fault as a pair, P0441 with P04F1: if your reader shows both, the repair depends on which Honda you drive.

What the purge valve actually does, and the two ways it fails

The evaporative system catches fuel vapor from the tank in a charcoal canister so it never reaches the air. A purge valve โ€” also called a canister purge valve, a CPV or a purge control solenoid โ€” opens on command and lets the running engine draw that stored vapor into the intake and burn it. A vent valve lets fresh air in behind it, and closes when the computer seals the system for a leak test.

Failure one: stuck open. The engine draws vapor when it should not. At idle that is an over-rich mixture and a stumble; just after a fill-up, when the canister is fullest, it can be a stall. Worse, an open valve gives the engine a straight path to pull vacuum on the sealed tank โ€” NHTSA's Ford Focus file describes excessive vacuum "potentially deforming the fuel tank, collapsing on itself," with "an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability issues, and/or loss of motive power."

Failure two: stuck closed or lazy. Nothing purges, the canister saturates, and the code sets for too little flow. That is the quieter failure and the one most likely to be emissions-only.

And failure three, which is not a failure at all. The valve is fine and the measurement is wrong โ€” sensitive software, a harness picking up interference, a kinked hose. All three appear in the documents below, on cars from a Volkswagen GTI to a Bentley Continental.

The code your car may use instead of P0441

We searched every manufacturer communication NHTSA holds for the string P0441 and found 225 distinct documents from 7 manufacturer groups, 157 of them Stellantis.

Ford has zero. General Motors has zero. Toyota and Lexus have zero. Nissan and Infiniti have zero. So do Subaru, BMW, Mini and Mercedes-Benz.

Not because their purge valves do not fail โ€” because their computers file the same complaint under a different number. In the 1,593 purge complaints we read, the codes owners quote are P1450 (76 reports), P0456 (30), P0496 (21), P144A (15) and only then P0441 (14). P1450 is Ford's own code for a fuel tank vacuum the system could not bleed off: this exact failure, wearing a Ford badge.

What to do with that. On a Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota or Nissan, a P0441 bulletin search returns nothing โ€” which is not the same as nothing being wrong. Search the code you actually have, and the words canister purge valve as well.

The 10-minute driveway protocol

  1. Read every code, pending and history, and save the freeze frame. A $20 to $40 reader gives you the full list and the conditions when the code set. Clearing throws that away, and some programs can only be claimed while the code is present.
  2. Run the VIN through the federal recall lookup and the manufacturer's owner site. On a 2012-2018 Focus this step alone can end the story at $0.
  3. Check the gas cap. It should click, its seal should be soft, and it should be the manufacturer's part. One owner in our P0441 set cleared the codes with a genuine cap after two aftermarket caps failed out of the box.
  4. Open the fuel filler on a warm day and listen. A long hiss or a hollow bang means pressure or vacuum the system is not managing.
  5. Watch the fuel gauge for a week. An erratic or stuck gauge is one of the symptoms NHTSA lists for a tank pulled out of shape.
  6. Note whether the trouble follows a fill-up. A stall, hard start or rough minute after leaving the pump is the signature of a valve passing vapor when it should be shut.
  7. Start the engine cold and record 30 seconds at the hood. A purge valve ticks softly as it cycles; a hunting idle is worth having on file before anyone quotes.

Ten minutes and a cheap reader give you most of what the first half of an $80 to $200 diagnostic fee buys; what a diagnostic should cost covers the rest.

The tell. The light arrived within days of a fill-up, the cap is aftermarket or does not click, or something was recently worked on near the intake.

What it actually is. The purge path is a valve plus hoses plus a canister plus a sealed tank, and the computer measures the whole chain. Bentley's technical product information 2053429/6, for 2018-2024 Continental GT, Bentayga and Flying Spur W12 models, spells out the order: a full diagnostic sweep, then "a visual check of the purge line assembly" for "incorrect routing," "kinks," "loose connections" and "damage" โ€” and only then, if the fault can be replicated, the valve.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The cap, and not for the reason people think. A cap normally throws a leak code, not a flow code โ€” but Mazda's 01-002-18-3417, a leak-location procedure for 2003-2015 models, files P0441 in the same bulletin as P0442, P0455 and P0456: a manufacturer telling its own technicians the four codes share a path. In our 29 P0441 complaints, one owner filed twice, the second time to record that "a new Mopar gas cap has taken care of the problem" after two aftermarket caps were faulty out of the box.

Fix it yourself โ€” the five-minute vapor path walk. Engine off and cool. Find the purge valve, usually a small solenoid on a hose between the intake and the firewall, and follow its hose both ways, looking for a hose kinked out of its clip, a line off its fitting, a cracked elbow or a loose connector. Then check the cap seal is soft, refit until it clicks, and note any long hiss. The honest limit: a flow test needs a tool that can command the valve and a leak test needs a smoke machine.

At the shop โ€” say this: "P0441. Before any parts, walk the purge line for kinks, loose connections and contamination, and tell me whether the cap and filler passed."

What it actually is: the Focus story, in order. In October 2018 Ford filed recall 18V-735 on 1,282,596 2012-2018 Focus cars with the 2.0L GDI or GTDI engine: the canister purge valve "may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system," consequence "an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle." The remedy reprograms the powertrain control module, replaces the valve as needed, and inspects and replaces the canister, tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. Until it was done, Ford told owners to "keep the fuel tank at least halfway full." Repairs began 19 August 2019, and in July 2019 recall 19V-515 added 57,488 cars whose factory software was "not properly installed."

Then the file kept moving. On 15 September 2023 NHTSA opened recall query RQ23-006 after 98 complaints of loss of motive power in the same cars, to test whether those remedies had worked. Its closing resume of 20 December 2024 records the mechanism: a valve stuck open "can cause excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system, potentially deforming the fuel tank, collapsing on itself," with "an inaccurate or erratic fuel gauge indication, drivability issues, and/or loss of motive power." In June 2026 Ford filed 26V-369 on 257,868 cars "previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 18V735." Three campaigns, one part.

The cheap cause that gets skipped: the program, not the recall. Buried in that same resume is the document that matters most to an owner. On 25 September 2024 Ford opened customer satisfaction program 24N07, and its dealer letter of 4 December 2024 is unusually generous: "a no-cost, one-time replacement (if needed) for the canister purge valve (CPV) for 15 years of service (unlimited miles) from the warranty start date of the vehicle," and "coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners." The population is 1,483,446 cars built between 1 August 2010 and 10 May 2018. Ford's reason: the valve "may not operate as intended," which "may lead to drivability concerns such as engine hesitation, running rough, or stalling at low speed." Dealers replace it and "inspect the evaporative emissions canister for the presence of liquid fuel," at 0.6 to 1.1 hours.

Two limits, stated plainly. A satisfaction program is not a safety recall, so it does not appear in NHTSA's VIN lookup โ€” you must ask a dealer for it by number. And the reimbursement window for owners who already paid "expires January 31, 2026"; the free repair itself has not expired.

Where this does not apply. Every 2019 and later Focus is outside these documents, as is any Focus without those two engines. Kia's SA280 has the opposite trap: "A Service Action is a repair program without customer notification that is performed during the warranty period."

At the shop โ€” say this: "Run this VIN for every recall, field service action, special coverage and customer satisfaction program, open or completed โ€” 24N07 specifically if this is a Focus. Do not clear the code first."

P0441 and a rough or hunting idle? Check free what the engine sounds like before anyone sells you a valve โ†’

How do you hear a purge fault, and what does it sound like nothing? A purge valve is a small solenoid, and when the computer cycles it you may hear a soft, rapid tick from the top of the engine, which is normal. What is not normal is the idle around it: a valve passing vapor it should be holding gives a hunting, surging or stumbling idle that rises and settles on its own, worst in the first minute after a fill-up. A leak, by contrast, makes no sound at all, which is why a cap or a cracked hose cannot be diagnosed by ear. Film 30 seconds of the engine idling, parked, and Pulscar's free check returns a likely cause, a severity and a repair-cost estimate, or "inconclusive" โ€” it does not decide whether the car is safe to drive. Free, no card, and the report arrives by email in about ten minutes.

The tell. The engine runs perfectly, the tank behaves, and the light keeps coming back โ€” sometimes after a valve has already been replaced.

What it actually is. The code is the output of a calculation, and every input can be wrong while the hardware is fine. The clearest example we read is Honda's 21-081, 26 October 2021, for 2017-2022 CR-V models. Symptom: "The MIL comes on with DTCs P0441 (EVAP System Purge Flow Malfunction) P04F1 (EVAP System Low Purge Flow Detected)." Cause: "External radio waves cause fluctuation of sensor outputs within the harness leading to a miscalculation setting a DTC." The corrective action is not a valve. It is a sub cord, parts 32108-TLA-305 and -306, fitted to the floor harness in 0.4 or 0.5 flat-rate hours.

Three more manufacturers say the same in plainer language. Volvo's technical journal 37666.1.0, 24 February 2026, for 2024-2025 XC40 mild hybrids opens with "Do not start by replacing parts," prescribes software 5.0.5, then insists the technician confirm "the Evaporative System monitor has reached 'Ready' status before releasing the vehicle." Hyundai's 17-FL-001 of February 2017, for 2012-2017 Accent and Veloster 1.6 GDI cars, is an ECM update for exactly this code at 0.3 hours, with the remarkable line "There is no vehicle performance concern associated with this condition." Kia's TSB ENG164 calls its Rio and Soul upgrade "DTC P0441 Logic Improvement."

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The search itself. Volkswagen's V011706 of November 2017 updates a 2016 GTI for "too sensitive purge flow diagnostics which may cause DTC P0441 to set in Engine Control Module" โ€” a manufacturer conceding its own threshold was wrong. A shop that has not searched for a calibration on your VIN has not finished the diagnosis, and none of these documents cost a part.

Where this does not apply. A car that stalls or will not restart after a fill-up has Route 4 symptoms, and a reprogram will not cure them.

At the shop โ€” say this: "Before any parts, search this VIN for calibration updates and bulletins naming P0441 or purge flow. If one exists, do it first, then drive the EVAP monitor to Ready and re-check."

The tell. A stumble, surge or stall at idle, worst just after a fill-up; a hard start at the pump; or a lean code beside P0441.

What it actually is. Honda gives the most precise published cause of any manufacturer. Bulletin 23-091 of 15 December 2023, for 2019-2024 Odyssey, 2019-2022 Pilot and 2019-2023 Ridgeline and Passport models: "Due to variations in the purge control solenoid valve spring, the valve wears unevenly and intermittently sticks. This may result in setting DTC P0441." The remedy is one part, purge control solenoid 36162-5G0-A02, at 0.5 flat-rate hours, then an EVAP function test, and "the normal warranty applies." Acura's 23-035 covers 2018-2020 and 2022-2024 MDX, 2018 RDX and 2018-2020 TLX with the same part at 0.6 hours.

Why the fill-up is the diagnostic moment. The canister is fullest just after fuelling, so a valve that passes vapor does its worst work leaving the forecourt. NHTSA has documented the mechanism twice. In PE13-016, a tank float on 2005-2006 HEMI models could swell and stick open, and "this condition causes fuel to enter into the purge line which may result in engine stall after refueling"; Chrysler extended the 19-gallon tank warranty to lifetime coverage. In PE12-016, the computer on the 2011 Chrysler 200 "initiates a purge monitor check while the engine is at idle which can result in an overly rich vapor condition and cause the engine to stall while stopped."

The cheap cause that gets skipped. The flow test. A capable scan tool can command the valve open and closed while you watch fuel trims and, on many cars, a flow reading โ€” which turns "it is probably the valve" into a number. Honda's own procedure ends with an EVAP function test for the same reason: a pass or a fail, not an opinion.

Fix it yourself โ€” prove the valve before you pay for it. Engine warm and idling, watch short-term fuel trim on a reader. Command the purge valve on if your tool allows: the trims should move and settle. A valve that does nothing, or an idle that drops and recovers when you unplug its connector, points at the valve, and on many engines it is two bolts and a plug on the intake hose. The honest limit: never open a fuel line, never work near a hot exhaust, and liquid fuel in the canister โ€” which Ford's program tells dealers to look for โ€” is shop work.

At the shop โ€” say this: "P0441 with a stall after refuelling. Command the purge valve and show me the flow or fuel-trim result before you replace it, and check the canister for liquid fuel."

The tell. An erratic or stuck fuel gauge. A hollow bang from under the rear. Difficulty getting fuel in, or a pump that keeps shutting off โ€” on a car that has lived with a purge code for months.

What it actually is. A running engine pulls a serious vacuum, and a valve stuck open connects it straight to a sealed plastic tank. NHTSA's RQ23-006 resume describes the end state: the tank "collapsing on itself." The remedy line in 18V-735 is the giveaway โ€” if the valve is replaced, dealers "will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary." A campaign written for a valve pays for three other parts because, by the time anyone looks, the valve has rarely failed alone.

The pressure can run the other way too. Recall 15V-793 of November 2015 covers 411,205 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan cars whose purge valves "may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank": "The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel." Same part, opposite failure.

The cheap cause that gets skipped. Filling the tank. It sounds absurd, and it is Ford's own interim instruction: until the recall repair was done, owners were told to "keep the fuel tank at least halfway full." More fuel means less air for a vacuum to act on. It is not a repair โ€” it is a way to stop the bill growing while you wait for an appointment.

Fix it yourself โ€” measure the damage, do not chase it. Photograph the gauge at a known fill level and again two tanks later, writing down how many gallons the pump delivered against what the gauge claimed, and listen at the filler when you open it cold. Keep the tank above half. The honest limit: dropping a tank or replacing a delivery module is shop work with real fire risk, and exactly the work a campaign may pay for.

Where this does not apply. A hesitant fill-up on a 2016-2018 Audi A6 or A7 has its own bulletin: the 2050276 series pairs "problems filling the fuel tank" with P0451 and P0441. On 2024-2026 Mazda CX-90 and CX-70 plug-in hybrids, SA-059-25 names the tank shutter valve and its sensor hose.

At the shop โ€” say this: "The purge code has been stored a while and the fuel gauge is wrong. Inspect the tank for deformation, check the canister for liquid fuel, and tell me which of those a campaign on this VIN covers before you quote."

What 1,593 federal purge complaints show

Our sample: every vehicle complaint in NHTSA's public files received 1 January 2015 to 8 September 2026, de-duplicated by report number โ€” 777,040 unique owner reports. Narratives are ALL CAPITALS through 2020 and mixed case after, so every query is case-insensitive.

Why we counted the part, not the code. Only 29 complaints in the whole file name P0441 โ€” too small to measure anything, and itself the point. So we counted the component: 1,593 complaints whose narrative contains the word purge. Before publishing a figure we read 30 drawn at random (seed 20260919) end to end; all 30 describe an evaporative purge component, a false-positive rate of zero in thirty.

Finding one: this is a driveability file, not an emissions file. 646 of the 1,593 โ€” 40.6 percent โ€” describe a stall or a loss of motive power. 331 mention refuelling, 174 a hard start or no-start, 466 the check engine light. A code officially about incorrect purge flow reaches a safety agency as a car that stops.

Finding two: the vocabulary is all hardware. 1,391 (87.3 percent) name a purge valve, solenoid or CPV; 394 (24.7 percent) the fuel tank, 164 (10.3 percent) the canister, 128 (8.0 percent) the fuel pump, 57 (3.6 percent) the gas cap, and only 50 (3.1 percent) any software โ€” the opposite of what the bulletins prescribe.

Finding three: the tank damage is measurable. 98 complaints, 6.2 percent, describe a fuel tank deformed, collapsed, crushed, warped or sucked in, 93 of them Ford, Lincoln or Mercury. 692 (43.4 percent) name a recall, 332 (20.8 percent) say the fault came back, and only 24 (1.5 percent) say a shop could not find it โ€” low, because a stuck valve leaves evidence.

Where mileage was stated โ€” 886 of 1,593 โ€” the median is 77,710 miles, the middle half 54,000 to 108,000. Complaints are owner reports, not audited repairs, and raw counts reflect very different sales volumes.

Can a purge valve problem really stop the car, or is that an exaggeration? The federal file answers both ways at once. Across the 1,593 complaints about the evaporative purge component, 646 โ€” 40.6 percent โ€” describe a stall or a loss of motive power, and among the 545 that record a road speed the median is 40 mph, with 245 at 45 mph or above. So yes, it stops cars, and usually at road speed rather than on a driveway. At the same time every structured safety flag sits below the all-complaint baseline: towed 3.20 percent against 5.11, crash 0.82 against 4.37, fire 0.31 against 1.82, with 11 injuries and 1 death. The honest reading is that this fault interrupts journeys far more often than it causes crashes, which is why owners live with it long enough for the tank to suffer. The Ford Focus file, before and after the recall

One nameplate is 507 of the 1,593 complaints โ€” 31.8 percent โ€” and 506 of them are model years 2012 to 2018, the exact range of recall 18V-735.

Inside the Focus set every symptom is sharper. 292 of 507 (57.6 percent) describe a stall or loss of power, against 31.1 percent for every non-Ford complaint. 87 (17.2 percent) describe a deformed or collapsed tank, against 0.9 percent for the non-Ford group. 311 (61.3 percent) name a recall, and the median reported mileage is 75,000.

And here is the number that explains three campaigns. The 18V-735 repair began on 19 August 2019, and 385 of the 507 Focus complaints โ€” 75.9 percent โ€” were received on or after that date, at 44, 54, 61, 75 and 61 a year through 2020 to 2024, with 32 narratives pairing a recall number with a word for the fault returning. That is the file NHTSA read when it opened RQ23-006, and the file behind 26V-369.

Read the caveat with the number. Recall publicity creates complaints: a letter teaches an owner the vocabulary and the form, so part of the post-2019 rise is people learning what to call it. But 18V-735 was itself a response to complaints, and a remedy that worked would bend the line down rather than let it run five more years. Ford's own answer, a second reprogram in 2026 for cars "previously repaired incorrectly," is the strongest evidence the line meant something.

The rest is a long tail. Fusion 181, Escape 159, Edge 53, Chevrolet Traverse 38, Explorer and Fiesta 24 each, Bronco Sport 17, Trax 16. The Ford group is 1,047 of 1,593, or 65.7 percent โ€” and, as the next section shows, it has never published a bulletin naming P0441.

What 225 manufacturer documents naming P0441 look like

The Check Engine Code Index counts 82 distinct bulletins naming P0441 from 6 manufacturer groups, at least 74 percent software, of which 65 are Stellantis; take Stellantis out and 17 remain, 7 of them software. That is the figure to quote, because the index applies exclusions a raw text search does not.

We ran the raw search too: 2,021 make, model and year rows; 225 distinct NHTSA document IDs; 7 groups. The gap is not an error in either โ€” the index removes Volkswagen's helpline "analysis lists", Honda and Acura dealer messages, IDs with no digits, and folds revisions into one bulletin. Both methods are published.

136 of the 225 describe a software or calibration change on our matching rule โ€” a share inflated by Stellantis, whose flash bulletins list many codes each, which is why we do not claim "P0441 is usually software" as a general truth.

Honda's row is the one to watch. From March 2020 American Honda sent dealers messages saying it "is searching for" CR-Vs, then Odysseys, Passports, Pilots, Ridgelines, MDXs and TLXs with P0441 stored, asking them to "collect specific parts from the vehicle prior to you attempting a repair of any kind." Those produced bulletins 21-081 and 23-091. In April and May 2026 the messages started again, for 2024-2026 Odyssey and Ridgeline, 2024-2025 Passport and 2024-2026 MDX. A manufacturer collecting purge valves off current models in 2026 is not a closed case, and no repair bulletin for those years had appeared when this page was written.

What owners say they paid

The ladder above carries published estimate ranges. This is different: it is what owners told the federal government.

The method, briefly. All 1,593 narratives were split into sentences, and every dollar figure between $20 and $30,000 in a sentence naming a purge, canister, tank, pump or EVAP part was pulled out: 71 sentences in 60 complaints. Each was then read; diagnostic fees alone, vehicle values and unrelated bills were dropped by reading rather than by rule.

The result is two populations, not one. Twenty-six figures describe a purge valve or solenoid job: median $500, range $147 to $1,043, quartiles $300 and $700. Twenty-one describe tank, pump or canister work after a valve stuck open: median $1,500, range $331 to $2,700, quartiles $1,183 and $2,000. The eleven Ford Focus rows inside that second group have a median of $1,960.

Reconciling that with the ladder. The ladder prices a purge valve installed at โšช $150 to $300; the owner median for the same job is $500. Both are honest: owner reports skew to dealer invoices carrying a diagnostic charge and often a second part, and to people angry enough to file. One is a $214 dealer part with a $105 independent installation, inside the ladder; another is $857.60 including a $189.95 diagnosis and a fuel induction cleaning, outside it. Read the ladder as the part job and the $500 as the bill people remember.

What the second population really measures. The price of delay. One 2013 Focus owner was quoted "a new purge valve, a new evaporator canister, a new fuel tank and fuel pump, totaling $2100" and recorded the reason given: "emissions components are only covered for 2 years or 25K miles." Another paid $671.39 for a canister purge valve and "subsequently learned that the part was part of NHTSA Recall 18V-735." Forty-seven figures is not a market survey, and none are invoices we have seen.

Which P0441 repairs does a manufacturer pay for, and which are yours? The documents draw the line, and the dates on them matter more than the badge. A 2012-2018 Focus built at Michigan Assembly has a free canister purge valve for fifteen years with no mileage limit under program 24N07, and that coverage follows the car to its next owner. Honda replaces a purge control solenoid on named Odyssey, Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline years under the normal warranty, and fits a shielding cord to a CR-V. Hyundai, Kia and Volvo publish software rather than parts. Against that, a car outside every one of those clocks, with a valve worn out at 110,000 miles, is yours to pay for, and so is a canister flooded because the light was ignored for a year. The warranty clock nobody explains

The federal floor is two years, not eight. Under 42 U.S.C. 7541(i)(1), for light-duty vehicles and trucks from model year 1995, the emissions warranty is "the first 2 years or 24,000 miles of use (whichever first occurs)." The famous eight-year, 80,000-mile term in 7541(i)(2) applies only to a "specified major emission control component," defined as "only a catalytic converter, an electronic emissions control unit, and an onboard emissions diagnostic device." A canister purge valve is not on that list. Neither is a canister or a fuel tank.

That is why the owner quotes above sound the way they do. The 2013 Focus owner told that emissions parts are covered for two years was not being fobbed off โ€” that is the federal minimum, and it is why Ford's fifteen-year program is remarkable rather than routine.

California is longer, and the trigger is the light itself. 13 CCR 2037(b)(2) covers "any defect in materials or workmanship which would cause the vehicle's on-board diagnostic malfunction indicator light to illuminate, for a period of three years or 50,000 miles, whichever first occurs," with high-priced parts at seven years or 70,000 miles. In a state that follows California, a P0441 inside three years and 50,000 miles is a warranty conversation.

Manufacturers go past both floors when they choose to. Chrysler extended the 19-gallon tank warranty in PE13-016 to lifetime coverage; Ford's 24N07 runs fifteen years, unlimited miles. Those terms live in documents, not in the statute โ€” the whole argument for running the VIN first.

Should you buy a used car with a P0441 history?

A purge fault is one of the few check-engine problems whose worst outcome is visible on a test drive, so the answer is usually yes โ€” if three things check out.

The tank, the pump and the VIN. Watch the gauge across two tanks, and open the filler cold to listen for a violent hiss or a hollow bang; a tank pulled out of shape shows itself in the gauge. Then the fill-up test: put in five gallons and start the engine immediately. A stall, a long crank or a rough minute afterwards is the signature of a valve passing vapor, and it is the most informative thirty seconds you can spend. Then the VIN: on a 2012-2018 Focus the free valve program runs fifteen years and transfers to you automatically, which turns a bargaining chip into a $0 repair.

Walk away if the seller cleared the code that morning. Ask for a scan in front of you and read the monitors. If the EVAP monitor says "not ready", the codes were cleared recently and the car's history has been erased โ€” the state in which nobody can verify a repair.

Price it honestly. The realistic downside is a valve job of a few hundred dollars; the realistic disaster is tank, pump and canister work at a median of $1,500. A clean tank, a clean fill-up test and an eligible VIN deserve a small discount; an erratic fuel gauge deserves the full $1,500 or a different car. Warranty extensions owners do not know about covers coverage that follows the vehicle.

How to read your own car's record in 10 minutes

  1. Run the VIN for open recalls. NHTSA's recall lookup returns open, unrepaired safety and emission recalls. It does not show completed ones, and it does not show satisfaction programs, service actions or special coverages.
  2. Ask a dealer for the campaign list by name: "every campaign on this VIN, open or closed, including customer satisfaction programs, field service actions and special coverages." Ford's 24N07 and Kia's SA280 are both invisible to the federal lookup.
  3. Read the bulletin summaries for your year, make and model. The field layout describes the columns. Search your own code, not P0441, if you drive a make that never prints it.
  4. Read other owners' complaints on the same car. The complaint field layout explains every column; twenty reports on your model year will tell you whether the tank is in the story.
  5. Check the in-service date against three clocks: two years or 24,000 miles federally, three years or 50,000 miles in California, and whatever the manufacturer's document says.

Clearing P0441 before an inspection: why it comes back

Clearing the code on the morning of the test fails for three reasons, one of which can cost you a free repair.

The light is an automatic fail. Under 40 CFR 85.2222, a vehicle whose check engine light is commanded on "shall fail the OBD inspection."

A freshly cleared car is not ready. The same rule allows 2001 and newer vehicles no more than one unset readiness monitor, and clearing resets them all. The EVAP monitor is among the fussiest: it wants a particular fuel level, a cold start and a settled ambient temperature. Volvo makes its technician confirm "the Evaporative System monitor has reached 'Ready' status before releasing the vehicle" for exactly that reason. Arrive too soon and you are turned away; arrive later and the code is back.

And the code is your evidence. Several programs are keyed to the fault being present, and a dealer who finds no code has nothing to claim against. Save the codes, do not clear them, bring the printout.

What actually happens at the shop, checkpoint by checkpoint

Checkpoint 1 โ€” the VIN question. "What recalls, emission recalls, service actions, special coverages and customer satisfaction programs show on this VIN, open or completed?" Free, and on a Focus it decides everything.

Checkpoint 2 โ€” the code list and the conditions. "Which codes are stored, pending and in history, and what does the freeze frame say about fuel level and engine temperature?" A lean code beside it changes the route.

Checkpoint 3 โ€” the plumbing and the cap. "Was the purge line checked for kinks, loose connections and contamination, and did the cap and filler pass?" Bentley puts this before any part.

Checkpoint 4 โ€” the flow test, not the opinion. "Did you command the purge valve and measure the result, and is there a calibration update for this code on this VIN?" A number and a bulletin number separate a diagnosis from a guess.

Checkpoint 5 โ€” the tank and the ceiling. "Is there liquid fuel in the canister, is the tank deformed, and will you call me before anything above this figure?" The overcharging guide covers how quotes grow.

Three diagnostic traps that cost owners the most

Trap 1: the purge valve bought before the VIN was run. The situation: a 2015 Focus, light on, stalls pulling out of the gas station, 96,000 miles. What the shop says: "Purge valve. Six hundred and seventy dollars, parts and labor." What is really happening: the car is inside 24N07, which covers the valve free for fifteen years with no mileage limit. One owner in our sample paid $671.39 and then found the part on a recall. Price versus bill: $0 against $671, more if the canister is involved. Your protective question: "Have you checked this VIN against 24N07 and every open and completed campaign before quoting?"

Trap 2: the valve replaced twice on a car whose valve was never the problem. The situation: a 2018 CR-V with P0441 and P04F1 back weeks after a new solenoid. What the shop says: "The replacement must have been faulty. Another valve." What is really happening: Honda's 21-081 for that car blames "external radio waves" disturbing the harness and fits a sub cord. Two owners in our 29-report P0441 set replaced several EVAP parts each and reported no change, one of them after more than $700. Price versus bill: a 0.4-hour cord against an open-ended run of parts. Your protective question: "Is there a bulletin for this code on this VIN, and what did the flow test read before and after the last part?"

Trap 3: waiting, because "it's only an emissions code." The situation: a Focus with a purge code, driven for a year because it "runs fine most of the time." What the shop says: "It's an emissions thing. Get it done before your inspection." What is really happening: a valve stuck open pulls vacuum on a sealed tank. In our file 98 complaints describe a deformed or collapsed tank, and owner figures for tank, pump and canister work run to a median of $1,500 against $500 for the valve alone. Price versus bill: the valve now, or the valve plus the tank plus the pump later. Your protective question: "If this is a stuck-open valve, what is it doing to the tank and canister while I wait, and should I keep the tank half full meanwhile?"

Three quotes, decoded

These are composite scenarios, not individual customers โ€” the mileages and outcomes are typical of the patterns in the documents and complaints above, assembled so the arithmetic is visible. We do not publish invented testimonials.

Scenario 1 โ€” the Focus that was free twice over. A 2014 Focus at 118,000 miles, stalling at low speed, purge code, gauge reading full for two days after a fill-up. The first quote is $1,900 for a valve, canister, tank and pump. The owner runs the VIN, finds 18V-735 marked complete, and asks by number about 24N07, which is open: the valve is replaced at no charge and the canister inspected for liquid fuel. Lesson: "the recall was already done" is not the end of the sentence.

Scenario 2 โ€” the V6 van with a worn spring. A 2021 Odyssey at 41,000 miles, light on, P0441 and P04F1, no driveability complaint at all. An independent shop quotes a smoke test and a valve; the dealer applies 23-091 instead โ€” one purge control solenoid, half an hour, EVAP function test, normal warranty. Lesson: on a documented model the maker's part number and flat-rate time are the cheapest path.

Scenario 3 โ€” the code that was software. A 2016 Veloster at 74,000 miles, recurring P0441, engine perfectly normal, a purge valve fitted a year earlier that did not hold. The dealer runs Hyundai's ECM update in 0.3 hours, and the owner drives until the monitor reads ready before the state inspection. Lesson: a code that returns after the obvious part is a bulletin search, not a second part.

Your action plan: 10 minutes, today, this week

Next 10 minutes โ€” free:

  1. Read and save every code, pending and history, plus the freeze frame. Do not clear anything.
  2. Check the gas cap clicks and its seal is intact, and look along the purge hose for kinks and loose connections.
  3. Note whether the trouble follows a fill-up, and whether the fuel gauge behaves.

Today:

  1. Run the VIN through the federal recall lookup, then call a dealer and ask for service actions and customer satisfaction programs by name.
  2. If the tank or gauge is involved, keep it at least half full until it is looked at.
  3. Run a free sound check on the idle before anyone quotes a valve.

This week:

  1. Ask, in writing, for a bulletin and calibration search on the VIN before any part.
  2. Ask for a commanded flow test result and a canister inspection on the estimate.
  3. After the repair, drive a week including a cold start, confirm the evaporative monitor reads complete and no purge code is pending, and keep an invoice that names what the flow test showed and whether the canister held liquid fuel.

What we looked for and did not find. No recall or investigation in the federal file names P0441 itself; the six purge campaigns describe the component. No Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, BMW or Mercedes-Benz bulletin names the code โ€” a finding about vocabulary, not about those vehicles. No repair bulletin had appeared for the 2024-2026 Honda and Acura models in the 2026 parts-collection messages when this page was written.
